UPDATE: The madness continues. After I got the second replacement battery, the little plastic piece that keeps the bin from sliding off broke off. Another call to Dyson which resulted in them sending a replacement bin which did not fix the problem. Dyson then said that I have to send the vacuum in for repair. Their process involves going to UPS store with a special number. The idea is that UPS will pack and return to Dyson for a repair. Of course the number did not work at the UPS store. Yet another call to Dyson resulted in the magic number being "reset". UPS was able to accept the return.

To recap, in 6 weeks Dyson has sent the wrong battery, and a new bin which did not fix the problem. At least 7 phone calls and my expensive vacuum has now left the building on its way to be repaired.

How do I rate with zero stars?

I changed my review from two stars to one star because of Dyson’s poor customer service. They made a mistake. That’s human but they compounded the mistake by sending me to the back of the line. My vacuum has now been broken for 4 weeks. I should have just sent the whole thing back.

Up until this experience, I was a Dyson supporter. I have 2 V5 and 2 V10 hand held vacuums. s

The battery just up and died...and by died, I mean it just quit. Nothing happens when you pull the trigger. I called Dyson waited on hold for 45 mins. and they said I needed a new battery. After three weeks the battery came. (Wrong battery).

I called back and told them I received wrong battery. The representative said to send the whole unit back. "Just take to the UPS store and ask them to send to Dyson". No address. No RMA number.

I finally asked them to just send the correct battery. They said they would. Time will tell if this will work.

For now, I can no longer recommend Dyson.

Summary:
1). Battery failed too early. You have to take unit apart to replace battery.
2). Customer service is not staffed appropriately. Long wait times and incorrect information when you finally talk to someone.
3). Customer service is not trained properly. They sent wrong battery. They told me wrong return process. They did not seem terribly interested in helping.

The Good:
Stairs - Kick A.. and Fast
Hardwoods - Super suction
Dog hair - eats it like my puppy chews up kibble!

Out of the box it worked great, after a couple of months its awesome..... !!EXCEPT!!

The Bad:
1. The retaining tab for the canister cover broke, so it now comes completely off every time we dump it. (See Photo)

2. The battery is already starting to weaken and we’ve only used it 20 times or so.

3. The wall mount is cool, but, a little wimpy and I’m not too sure it will last.

4. Support sucks! It has been difficult to get a hold of anyone on the phone. Online Chat works but is clunky and frustrating. AND after all of that we were told that we’d have to drive to even try and get it repaired. After a little pushback they are now sending a new part. (Total PITA to get warranty coverage).

The UGLY:
$600 and it may not last a year

Final Update: My replacement head has not failed thus far, but that is probably more due to the fact that I coddle it. However, the bin empty mechanism is truly one of the dumbest designs I have experienced. No matter how hard I have tried I continue to make a mess on both the floor and my hands when emptying. Dirt easily gets clogged around the output port and you must use your hands to clean it. And of course the dust flies everywhere from the action of the canister slide to empty. So it is terrible for allergy sufferers. Again, I never had a problem with the V8 designed canister. Factor in the multiple swipes to pick up dirt and I absolutely regret buying this.

Update: After four weeks and multiple calls, Dyson never got around to actually shipping the replacement part. (The part they originally told me was unavailable and would require them sending me a whole new unit.) They continued to blame the error on a computer glitch between Dyson and UPS and couldn't figure out how to create a new replacement part order in their system. This appeared to be a "run out the clock" game on the return window. I contacted Amazon again a few days before it expired to avoid being stuck with a broken unit and no support from Dyson and they offered to replace the unit this time based on the Dyson support situation. We'll see how this one goes as I will be watching both the brush head and canister for durability. Again, I'm probably foolish for replacing it based on the initial quality observations.

I'm a big Dyson fan having owned a ball and two hand vacs. The quality was great on all three and the battery life acceptable for a hand vac. Both 6 year old hand vacs are still going, one being the car model. I always wanted a stick vac but couldn't justify the price, so I was ecstatic (and shocked) when Amazon put this on sale for $3xx. Now I know why.

Unfortunately, I don't feel confident this vac was built to last. Before the first charge(!), I began to hear a loud rattling coming from the large powered brush head. I quickly turned it off and pulled the brush head off to inspect. Three plastic bits fell out onto the floor. It appears these parts were brush guides, so now the main head does not work. Huh? I used this for less than five minutes on carpet. How could I have broken it already?

I attempted to replace online with Amazon, however they only accept returns. I just couldn't give up on my dream vac just yet, so I called Dyson support. I registered my device, as I do with all my Dyson's, when I first got it so I was expecting a quick call. Nope. I had to redo the entire registration process over the phone as well. The individual part didn't seem to be available, which I found odd. I was told a "goodwill" replacement would be sent. I am hoping they inspect the part upon return so they can see what went wrong. Now we will see how long I am out a vacuum until the replacement arrives.

As for practicality and long term use, I'm not hopeful. I noticed a few things right away. The plastic is much thinner than on my other Dyson products. I scratched one piece simply by lightly brushing it against an edge of curved glass. The discharge canister is a very poor design. It requires a great deal of force to push open, which makes even less sense on a model with thinner plastic. Also, the canister must be disassembled from the wand to empty, which becomes annoying real quick. This process makes a dusty mess. Their is no way to avoid getting your hands dirty. (And there will always be dirt because this thing sucks up dust like nothing I have ever used.) Additionally, the close tab on the canister lid is VERY thin and flexes as the door is closed. I don't see how this will last from years of use and I doubt you can buy just the door. The plus however continues to be the Dyson's ability to suck up dust. I keep a clean house but this thing still manages to find it!

I'm probably making a mistake by keeping it given the canister issue alone. Maybe they will have a better replacement part by the time the warranty is up? Wishful thinking most likely though. My advice is return this while you can and look at the V8 model instead. There is a reason this vac dropped over $200 in price so quickly. I don't recall any other Dyson stick coming down in price so fast. It just doesn't seem like earlier Dyson product build quality.

The vacuum does pick up dirt and pet hair well. However the charge lasts for barely 20 minutes (one room if you’re lucky) and takes 3.5 hours to recharge. So what’s the point? Should come with an optional electrical plug. Also, need to remove the stick part to empty the bucket and the emptying mechanism jams up. Much poorer quality than previous versions.

I checked the link on the product page for the warranty and it says there is a 5 year warranty. When the product arrived it only came with a two year warranty. Dyson has a lot of refurb products on sale and I was counting on a 5 year warranty to protect me from their manufacturing problems. I don't feel protected anymore and I feel lied too also.

I'll start with the good things first:

Out of the box, this dyson worked great, just like in all the videos and reviews I watched before shelling out half a grand for a vaccum cleaner. The first vaccuming yielded an insane amount of dirt, dust, and hair that was probably left for years by my old vaccum. While the first use had me charge the thing 3 tiimes and empty the bin over ten, I drew it up to be due to my previous vaccum leaving so much. The next few uses (probably once a week) led to fewer bin empties and I was usually able to get my 3 bedroom house done on 1-2 charges. I was pretty happy with it the first month or so. Also it is very nice for getting spider webs in high corners/cieling. PLUS it looks like a space bazooka and sounds like whatever that is too when you pull the trigger.

Around the 2 month mark the problems started. First I noticed the dust bin release mechanism getting a bit sticky, and I would have to try it a few times to open. Then I began to get my weekly routine done in a minimum of 2 full charges. I noticed the mechanism where the stick attaches to the main vac was beginning to become wobbly.

I wanted to buy this vaccum to get rid of the pain of plugging and unplugging constantly, and not having to lug something heavy up the stairs. You do get this, but here is the trade off: The battery loses capacity over time (for me noticeable after a month) so you will then have to cut vaccuming short and leave it plugged in for 3 hours a go. It is very lightweight, however you need different attachments. I purchased the Absolute which came with the soft hardwood cleaner head. This works great for dust and dirt on hard floor, but doesnt work very well on carpet at all. It also wont pick up anything that is larger than a big grain of rice. Little pebbles, piece of a dead leaf in your entranceway on hardwood? you'll need to go over it with the regular cleaner head first...which unless you run on max power setting doesn't pick up the fine dirt and dust from hard surfaces unless you go over it several times. By the way, I use my dyson on the middle setting, as the max will run through the battery in 5 minutes.

I also need the corner attachment for getting the dust in corners. So 3 attachments. I end up making 2 trips up and downstairs every time as I have to carry all these attachments with me at the same time. If you don't have a trash in every room, or do not want to get dust everywhere when you empty the bin constantly, you will make more trips.

Another note - I used this at my families house once, where there is a long haired dog that sheds frequently. Hair always gets stuck in any vaccum cleaner head you cannot do much about that but pull it out every so often. However with the dyson this hair would build up and clog the angle-arm mechanism between the cleaner head and where it attaches to the bottom of the stick, rendering the vaccum useless. You cannot get your fingers in there. You have to use a fork or piece of wire and a few minutes of your time to fish this out. This would happen at least twice per room in there house to the point where my attempt to show them my cool new dyson left me in shame and embarassment.

SO there are many problems obviously. Some are just trade-offs for having a lightweight, cordless vaccum. But as I continued to use this, the design flaws become more and more prevalent, and they are on Dyson. I would say my biggest issue now is the dust bin. I still have to empty it about 5-6 times per house cleaning. It is very small. On amazon it says the bin size is 77 L, which is obviously an error. They probably mean 0.77 L as this isnt close to being bigger than a 2 L of soda. But who knows, Dyson did reinvent the vacuum and hand dryer, so why not the Liter! Back to the dust bin - it used to open smoothly, now you have to push very hard on the lever to get it to slide down. Even after that, the lid on the bin almost never opens. When it does, the entire dustbin usually comes off, falling into your trashcan or bag on top of the dirt and dust causing a bunch of it to fly up in your face, in your nose and eyes, and eventually settling back down to the floor, so you can use your Dyson to pick it up again. I hate it. It is a terrible design flaw. This thing sucks, in the bad-sucky way.

So anyway my last complaint is about the return policy. I tried to call about 45 days in to return this waste of money to dyson. It states on their website that for the V10 models there is a 90 day money back guarantee return policy. I was informed that as I bought this from Amazon, that that policy didn't apply. My issues were told to be taken up with Amazon. So ok, I didn't dive into the fine print which I should have. On the amazon page for this item (listed btw as "sold by: DYSON" as the vendor) the description is obviously designed by Dyson which includes links to their website, which states the return policy on the V10. It is very misleading but when you talk to Dyson directly, they won't acknowledge it. I even asked if I could trade it in for a cheaper plug in Dyson vacuum. Nope. SO i tried Amazon but their return policy is 30 days, which I was past.

Seriously, Dyson? You craft yourselves as these cutting edge renegades of cleanliness and sanitation, but YOU WON'T STAND BY YOUR PRODUCT because it was shipped to an Amazon warehouse in between yourselves and I? Unless you make "custom" versions of your product specifically for Amazon, I don't get it.

There are tons of good reviews over this vacuum. If I made mine in the first few weeks, it too would be 4-5 stars. I would find it hard to believe that almost all these good reviews weren't made in the first month or so. I would love to see some of these people do some 6 month and 1 year updates on their reviews.

This being an almost $600 vacuum when I bought it in November, I have to give one star. I am thoroughly dissatisfied with the product and purchase.
