I fairness to dell, I bought their gigabit switch around 2006 closer to when gigabit was new. I would imagine the ic's inside have been improved over the years to run cooler and more efficiently. My theory about older network switches over heating is correct I believe because I took the dell, cut a hole in it, installed a fan on the hole, and it too seems to work reliably now.

No fan in them, but then it will never break and over heat either. They do not seem to get too hot without the cooling fan so I think it is plus not to have one.

It works very well for traffic, but the L.E.D.'s do NOT blink rapidly with traffic flow. They will only blink at a steady rate. You cannot tell if the traffic flow through each connection is light or heavy because of this, and because of this, you can't determine what machines are talking to each other.
