Not a good product

The Amazon description for this switch is out of date. The current version of the product indicates that with the latest power supply it is up to 73% more efficient than similar non green D-link switches. Also worth noting is that the face plate on my unit is a silver color, not the white appearing face plate in the product photos.
I connected this switch on my work bench with a Kill-A-Watt power meter and with nothing else connected this 24 port beast is sipping just 3 watts. With five gigabit devices it is using a miserly 7 watts. Even fully loaded, according to the specs this switch will not use more than about 19 watts. The switch has features that will throttle down power consumption based on device connection speed, cable distance and whether a port is active or not. All of this means that you can build out a very robust home network without leaving something running 24X7 that is consuming a lot of power.
I was close to ordering the competing Netgear product (JGS524) however the Netgear has two fans in it (noisy and prone to failure) where as this D-Link switch is fanless! This is a big deal, as the fan is often the component that will go out over the long term with a product like this... not to mention the noise you will experience if you are anywhere near the device. The Netgear does have a "lifetime" warranty (and better warranty support) where as the D-Link has a 5 year warranty. With no moving parts, and if hooked up to high quality surge suppression the D-Link box should last for a very long time without problems.
Performance with this switch is excellent, I get rocket fast transport between all of my devices. It's worth noting that this is an unmanaged switch so you cannot break your network up into VLANs or do cable diagnostics, etc, with this switch. For its purpose though of providing a super fast home or small office network it is offering a tremendous value. T
Highly recommend it!

Otherwise the switch functioned well as a gigabit switch until recently. The only negative until the ports started to die is the rack mounting ears that were provided with mine have slots spaced at 1-1/8". You will find holes to match in 19-inch rack bar however, this won't fit between two other 1U devices and requiring you to stagger two 1-U locations. I ended up buying the rack ears for the TRENDnet switch (TEG-S16Dg) and these worked great.

UPDATE 17 May 2013:
Still have the 4 switches running, and no problems with them.
Update Feb 25, 2014:
I still have the 4 switches running, and have had no problems with them. I have never had any of these switches get hosed-up where I had to power them down to reset them. They just work. I have them powered from UPS back up power systems which probably helps with their reliability.
Update March 31, 2015
I still have the 4 switches. Never have had a problem. I have them on a UPS and have never had one hose up since I first installed them.
Update April 18, 2016
First switch installed in 2011 and all are still working with no problems. They are powered by UPS and never get glitches or need to be power cycled. Great unmanaged switch!!

My one complaint: What in the living **** were you smoking when you cut the corners on the port status LEDs? 6x4 when the ports are 2x12? Yes I can read the numbers. But this is the only switch I have encountered with a LED layout that has absolutely nothing in common with the physical ports. I guess it's in my closet now so I don't have to look at it but I'm calling you out on that nonsense, D-Link!

One feature I liked is that the ports are auto-detecting regarding whether a cable is a crossover or straight through, just like a more expensive switch. You can't manage this switch by forcing the the ports into a configured state (auto detect vs. or manually configured), but that would have been overkill for me.
My setup is an Apple Time Capsule (version 1) as my router and wireless. I'm using a straight-through cable to connect the D-Link switch to the Time Capsule, both of which are gigabit.
If this is the type of setup you're thinking of installing, this D-Link switch appears to be the perfect fit. I can only hope the reliability is better than the Linksys, but according to all the user reviews I've read during my research, this is the preferable unit.
Hope this helps!
NOTE: I'm revising this review after using the switch for several months now. Absolutely no problems, even though I've made changes to my network. The only thing I'd add to my original review is that the fan on the switch is a bit noisy. If you want this to be located in your office, be aware that the fan is always on and is audible. Other than that observation, I would still recommend this switch.

**Amazon says that people usually bundle this switch with the Trendnet 4U rack mount, but I don't recommend doing so.**
This switch comes with the brackets to mount it on a rack, but if you screw up the switch on this rack, there will be no space to plug in the power cord behind it. You will either have to get a power cord with the 90 degree angle plug, or get another rack. Using that rack will force you to bend the power cable when screwing it down....which u don't want to do.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this switch and would definitely purchase again if the need arises.

I used the rack mounting brackets and secured the switch under the basement stairs, and plugged in my network cables before the cable company came with the modem.
The basic set up is cable modem to a wireless router in the middle floor, and using only one of the outputs from the router, connect back to the switch, and from this switch to everywhere else.
This switch was so easy, the cable company came and hooked up their modem, I plugged in the "modem to router" line that I had already run, and didn't have to do any configuration whatsoever. Didn't even put in the CD Rom that shipped with the switch. It worked right out of the box.
I have a 12 and 13 year old that X-Box and Computer simultaneously, while the 3 year old watches a streaming movie from netflix, and Directv is even hooked in to this switch for the whole home set up. I can't speak to reliability yet, but it is fast, silent, and breeze to hook up.

What comes inside the box:
------------
1U Mounting Hardware ( For Mounting the switch to a standard 19" rack enclosure )
Power supply cord ( Standard 3 prong 18 AWG Power Cord )
24 Port D-link Switch ( Not a box full of rocks thankfully )
------------
The D-link 24 Port Switch stays cool to the touch, is noiseless, and easily installs inside a 19" rack-mount frame for an out of the box plug n play gigabit switch experience.
I have this installed on a StarTech 36U open frame server rack and runs in conjunction with a 16 port Cat6 Patch Panel and D-link gaming router. No Bottlenecks or Slow Downs with Data Transfer Rates across my network.

Installation took no time at all. Plugged in the power, moved all my existing cables from the old 8 port hub to the this one and I was in business.
Performancewise, I have no complaints. Throughput is as expected. I've had it powered on for almost 2 months and not one power down/power up.
For the current price this is listed at, it is a bit on the high side. Mine was from the Warehouse Deals inventory and was significantly less expensive. For the current price I see listed, you can probably find a decent managed switch.

Setup is pretty easy, just plug in your cables, and plug it in. It appears to be fanless (at least I can't hear a fan), and the power supply is internal (no brick). Speeds are Gigabit range from my informal file transfer tests.
I am knocking one star off for the lack of documentation. The only aggravation I have is that there is a switch on the bottom that is labled EEE+ that is not mentioned in the documentation. After a bit of Googling I found some promotional materials for the device that seem ot indicate that this turns off some of the green power saving features.
Delivery was silly fast, got it the next day using Amazon prime free shipping option.

We've had no issues with the switches. They've been strictly plug and play, even though some of our cable runs must be over 100 feet. I don't notice any speed increase over the old 100 megabit switch. This may be due to the SATA drives we have for file storage in the server. They aren't particularly fast. Also, our internet access in the new office is much slower than in our old office. This would also mask any speed increase. The speed of a network is only as fast as its weakest link.
I would rate these higher if we haven't had any problems a year from now. Right now I can't rate them on reliability.

We've had these switches 6 months now with no problems. Have not needed to reboot them once. We are upgrading the small switches and remaining desktops to gigabit. At that time I will do a little performance testing.

The only downside was dealing with Dlink's parts department to order two rack ears which were lost at a satellite office. They do not take credit card over the phone so you have to mail a check. The replacement ears were $20 shipped FYI. I had to send a check twice after they or the postal service lost the letter. I found out later the person who gave me the info correctly had left the company after I called back 3 weeks later to find out where the shipment was. It's ridiculous they can't take a CC over the phone though and obviously the wait period was over a month after it was all settled for a set of replacement mounting ears. This is the only reason I knocked off a star.

Positives: quiet, lots of ports, very fast, doesn't over heat the space around it.
Negatives: is quite big make sure you have space to put it or make space, may be pricey depending where you buy it from.

Multiple devices can access the router and is one of the cheapest among routers for gaming.
