I am finally satisfied with a compact digital camera. The S3 IS is a bit on the bulky side and only just fits in a jacket pocket. Images shot at over 400 ISO are very noisey and will not enlarge well.
However this camera is very well designed and a delight to use. It has virtually every feature you could want including a movie mode which I never use. The eye level view finder option is very useful, although not as clear as I would have liked, but very usable. The tilting LCD screen is brilliant, and the option to fold it away for protection is something all cameras could benefit from. Image quality is fine between ISO 80-200 and usable at 400. The image stabilization is excellent, the best I've tried and is a very real benefit. Overall this is an excellent well balanced camera with full manual control, ideal even for advanced photographers. I strongly recommend it.

Most of the time, I take pictures during daylight and outside, so a lower ISO setting is fine.
If you use auto settings and the pre-programmed modes, then generally the camera tries to keep the ISO setting as low as possible. This may result in blurry images in low light as the shutter speed will slow down, but otherwise, you will see very good results with this camera.
The 12x zoom is great and the ability to add a tele converter lens to this camera is useful. The focus at the long end of the zoom is excellent - much better than other camera's in this class. The camera also takes fantastic close ups using the super macro option.
This camera is fast to react. The zoom is very fast, but once you get used to it, easy to control. The menus are good.
I also like the fact that it does have the manual settings, such as aperture priority and shutter priority.
I found I had to up the brightness on the electronic view finder as it's difficult to see. In bright light, it's still quite difficult, especially if you, like me, wear glasses - the answer is to take your glasses off - but that is quite inconvenient.
Overall, the digital noise is the main thing that disappoints me with this camera. Other cameras in this class don't have digital noise at ISO 200 (the Panasonic Lumix, for example). Some of them even have noise reduction software (Sony DSC H5).
The other slight disappointment is that there is no option to have RAW images on this camera.

i also found the shutter speed to be much better than my older camera.
The video card works well with my computer and the resulting photo prints are excellent.
If you want a small camera then this would not be your choice, but for ease of use, quality of photos and additional features then i would highly recommend this one.

Tom

I expected more from 12x optical zoom, but maybe I'm not so
experienced and never have had deal with this kind of cameras.
I thought that 12x should give 7x-8x magnification but in
reality I have something 5x - 6x. Battery life is real surprise
for so big camera and I won't be worry about recharging.
I recommend this camera for novice photographers like me
and I need to learn lots of features and manual.

I compared specs of S2 IS and S3 IS, and decided that S2 IS was damn good, but S3 IS would be a real treat. And, I will not be disappointed. I have had chance to do some benchmark testing of Sony, Kodak, Olympus and Nikon in same class since. S3 IS is a clear winner...
So whether you are a PRO covering a fashion show or an average daddy taking memory-shots of your kids over weekend, you will love this camera. I learnt a great deal about photography in past two months I hunted for a good camera - learnt what defined a good and clear shot...and this is the camera that can deliver it.
