I bought two of these for different uses. Both died with a couple of months of each other, a few years after I bought them (out of warranty).

They both produce a constant high-pitch sound on all outputs, including headphone output.
I tried to open the unit using a good, reliable Wera screwdriver and stripped all -extremely low quality- screws that are not meant to take any torque whatsoever.

Schematics for this unit are impossible to find.

I'll never buy another Cambridge Audio product ever again.
Stay away.

Just received and installed. I am thoroughly pleased with this unit. Took a little reading to bump it up to USB 2.0 to be able to reach 192K, but all in all a genuinely easy set up. A great value considering the quality of the build and it’s top shelf performance.

I have a pretty nice system, and was skeptical if the Cambridge DAC would actually add any value. So, I went ahead and got it, and after a couple weeks of listening, I love it ! Everyone's system is different (Amp, speakers, and so on), but for me, the Cambridge really helped define and separate the mids and provide detail appropriately. This was for the money, a great buy, Highly Recommend !

Sound quality with streaming makes CDs sound awfull. Almost as good as new remastered vinyl ... better than older vinyl unless the records are in perfect shape. I'm into vinyl - but the ease of streaming millions of records makes it an acceptable alternative to vinyl for me and preferable to CDs. For old CDs that I cant find on streaming services - I run them 9n a blue ray player through the DAC and they sound way better than my CD player.

I've been upgrading my shop stereo system over the last few months, but was neglecting the source of the music that is played there. My PC. This enabled me to bypass my sound card completely and provide much better digital to analog conversion. It didn't make much of a difference in audio quality initially with the plug & play USB Audio 1.0 setup, but once I installed the Cambridge Audio driver, things really opened up. HUGE difference. The signal to noise ratio is truly amazing. I also found an AISO plug-in for Windows Media Player 12 which also helped by bypassing the Windows mixer which adds some distortion. It comes with a 24" USB cable which looked kind of cheap and was too short, so I bought a better, longer one and mounted the unit right next to my workstation so I can adjust the volume control as needed, then ran longer RCA interconnects to my power amp. I was able to eliminate and sell my preamp since everything I was using it for is now within with the DACMagic Plus. That just about pays for its cost, so this was a nice upgrade that cost me almost nothing. If you get one of these and are using it with a Windows PC, I highly recommend that you download and install the Cambridge driver so you can take advantage of the far superior USB Audio 2.0 interface. Ignore the reviews that say it's too difficult to do. Easy as pie. As for the 3 digital filters, you will have to just try them and see which sounds best to you. I prefer the "Minimum" one. They give a very detailed technical explanation in the manual, complete with charts and graphs, but it's frankly a bit above my pay grade. The bottom line is use what sounds best to you.

Very well made, professional connections. The sound is impeccable. A good flat response no coloring. increase the clarity of the music over the straight jack into the laptop or desktop computer. Used on both windows and MAC. The sound quality was equally impressive on both. Listening through Beyerdynamic p51 and Beyerdynamic p70 headphones.

When it worked it was great. But for me unfortunately it wasnt working great all the time. Had to send it back. Going to try something else.
You may fair better but for me it want me to to be.

It works only one month, then a noise appear and finally stop to work.

Sounds great. Very happy. At first, I didn't have any sound and then I noticed that I failed to select the USB source on the front panel of the DAC. Duh. Had to set up my stereo receiver digital coax input port as enabled. I went with the digital coax between the DAC and stereo and am saving my optical fiber cable for something else. The Cambridge Audio website said (if that's where I read this) that a USB 3.0 cable would work between the computer and the DAC but the USB-b side is larger than normal on the newest 3.0 and so did not work. They need to fix that on their site info. Thankfully, the DAC comes with a USB 2.0 A-B cable. Purchased and downloaded J River Media Center to use as a player instead of my PC Itunes that I have used forever. Then spent a few days re-ripping my old CD collection to my hard drive in FLAC format. All in all, new electronics and systems take some tweaking to get them set up and working right. Had to go into computer sound settings and select the DAC as a source. Much better sounding than the sound from my Hi-res graphics card and onboard sound. I still take the video from the graphics card over HDMI but the sound is wired as described above. Oh, the length we music lovers will go to enjoy good music. Well worth it.

I have a very good sistem and bought this DAC to be part of it, but...
Pros: Sound quality is very good - 7,5/10. For the money 9/10.
Cons: No remote control, difficult to control the Volume and difficult to visualize which source is playing.

Sound is super natural! Now I can use my old gear with new video & audio conveniences!!

I have owned about 5-6 DACs in the last 18 months or so. This CA DAC is great. Sounds wonderful, I am using with a USB connection to a small PC and running JRiver and JRemote on an iPad Mini. Playing into a PrimaLuna tube amp.... great sound.

I was looking for a relatively small, not so taunting DAC+AMP for my office, and it must support balanced output which it does.
It also comes with a USB cable (about 20~30 inch), and a vertical stand (made from rubber).

I'm very pleased with the CA DacMagic Plus, it has really improved the sound of my computer/receiver. The bass has much greater punch and the vocals are clearer. CA's information on bit perfect usb audio was very useful. I've purchased my first high res music albums (not from Amazon)
and they sound great!

Paired this unit with Mac mini running Audivirvana audio playback software and Qobuz music streaming service through circa 1986 Carver M-1.0t magnetic field power amplifier and circa 1986 JBL model 4408 Studio monitors. Sounds incredible.

Great sound but no remote control

High quality and inexpensive

I have a massive collection of WAV files on my HTPC and I've been feeding them to my Denon AVR via HDMI for the past three years. I recently decided to build a "decent" sound system in my "man-cave" with a pair of KEF Q300 and an integrated amp - Marantz PM800. I was looking for a decent CD player with a USB input or networkable. I tried out various devices like the Marantz CD6004 with the USB input, but I felt it was lacking and didn't bring out the best of my speakers. I returned the CD6004 and decided different alternatives like SONOS.

I came across the DacMagic Plus on accident while looking at Musical Fidelity M1DAC A. I felt the DacMagic Plus offered more features for less cash. It seemed like a better alternative than the regular DacMagic although both shared the same Wolfson DACs with balance and unbalance out. The Plus offers a few other options that you may or may not need/want.

Plus vs Regular:

Plus cost roughly $150 USD more. For this you get the following.

Plus upconverts to 384KHz compared to 192KHz (Different digital filter chip). Not sure if you will notice any difference with mediocre gears.

Plus can act as a digital pre-amp stage that can drive headphones or be plug directly into an amp or powered speakers.

Plus is capable to stream from bluetooth device with the optional BT100 adaptor. I have not tried this yet as the BT module is not yet available. I am looking forward to this feature!!! I want to be able to stream from bluetooth capable devices like my laptop and smartphone.

Overall, this outboard DAC showed significantly wider soundstage, bass response, and imaging than the DAC in my Blu-ray player and Denon AVR - it's the real deal. It's also warmer and smoother and *gasp* it almost like my vinyls and closer to SACDs. I have a feeling my turntable will collect more dust except for the occasional listening session with recordings I don't have in digital format.

Ease of use: I got the device up and running in less than 30 minutes. About 2 hour after I got it from the UPS guy - as I gave the unit time to warm up to room temp.

Switching between USB2.0 and USB1.1 was a snap. If you are only listening to CD lossless recordings (CDs rip @ 44.1KHz) you could probably stick to USB1.1 and skip all the configurations needed for ASIO2.0.

Switching between pre-amp and fixed line level feed was very easy also. So it's a snap if you want to change from amp to headphones.

The one thing I dislike about this unit is that it doesn't have a power-on trigger.

Durabilty: Not sure yet. First Cambridge product and I hope it will last. The buttons on the unit seem somewhat flimsy and weak. Unit is pretty light so it's somewhat portable. It can fit my laptop bag. I can definetly see myself transporting the unit between work (Quincy Jones Q701 + Smartphone) and home (amp+computer).

So far I will give it my highest recommendation.

Easy to use, great sound!

Pretty good feature set and a very competitive price.

Sound is not as transparent, sound stage is not as 'deep' and the high end (voice, cymbals, other percussion instruments) are slightly rolled off compared to my 10-year old PS Audio Digital Link III (which itself has to be output to a preamp before the power amp. The Cambridge DAC Magic Plus functions as its own 'digital' pre-amp of sorts).

I can hear very little difference between the RCA and balanced XLR outputs going to a fully balanced power amp. Normally you'd get a gain of a few dBs (i.e. louder and more presence) - but perhaps that is due to the fact I'm using it in pre-amp mode. I scanned the reviews here and elsewhere (Crutchfield) before I bought it and couldn't find anything about 'burn in' but perhaps I'll re-visit this review after a few months of play time. I do understand that the Digital Link III is (or was) a reference quality DAC (and used they still sell for more than $500), but I expected the 24-bit Wolfson DACs in the Cambridge to sound comparable.

All of that out of the way, there is very little to complain about at the price point, but if for you absolute sound takes priority over convenience, there are other new and used options out there for roughly the same price with noticeably better performance IF used in a high-end audio system. I suspect that most people here will simply be using it for PC audio with a receiver or basic integrated amp or active speakers. For those uses, the DAC Magic Plus is highly recommended. You're not going to get better sound AND a feature set like this for the same price.

Ordered this device. Worked out of the box. Didn't seem to have any sound of its own. Can't find any negatives.

This USB amp/dac has just about everything I needed for my computer setup. My main gripe is that the volume adjustment has no indicator for how high the volume is. This is more annoying than you would think. Otherwise a great product. Didn't do any measurements but seems transparent. Don't listen to the people claiming that the dac or amp does't "sound" very good or some silliness like it. An amp/dac shouldn't "sound" like anything, it should simply transmit a signal with the highest fidelity possible.

I bought this as an open box unit but it came perfectly packaged with no sign that it had been used. The shipper even got it to me ahead of schedule and that made my weekend.

The audio quality of the unit is very good for such a low priced DAC although I am more likely to use the DA function of my DEQX preamp. The Cambridge Audio unit will serve to provide additional digital inputs since the DEQX can only handle one. The nice thing about the unit is that when it passes through the digital signal it remains completely unaltered The resolution of 192/24 sources is passed through fully. Not that I am certain I can hear the difference in such high-resolution sources, but it's nice to know that the Dac Magic Plus doesn't tinker with the source.

With it's usb input, you can download high resolution audio files (FLAC's), and play them back through a professional or consumer sound system. It's a huge step up in quality from using the headphone output.

Working great - both for alsa and for pulseaudio. READ THE INSTALL NOTES to ensure you switch it to high performance :)

Would have given it 5 stars if I didn't have to go online to figure out how to switch it from the default headphone setting to the RCA outs to hook up to my preamp. A couple of more printed words on the quick start sheet that came with it would be nice. Otherwise, does what it should and greatly improved the sound over my PC sound card.

Didnt take long to setup but I did have to download software from there website.

Feb 2019 update

I have been using this DAC for 5 years now. I recently ripped all of my CDs to FLAC format and listen through USB connection. This configuration is much better than CD themselves and way better than MP3 format. One unfortunate consequence is that it is also a little harsher for my taste. Long story short, I ended up using an external passive pre-amp instead of using this DAC as pre-amp. In addition, I prefer "min" filter to be "better".

I have a reasonably good audio system consisting of mostly Stereophile "B" grade components. The Theta DAC is still very nice but I was thinking things should have improved in the last 18 years. Came across this Cambridge Audio purely by chance as photography has taken most of my attention these days. The Parasound preamp I am using is probably the weak link since it does not have balanced output. I have been looking on and off for something just like this to bypass the preamp all together. I have heard of good comments of Cambridge Audio but never had a chance to listen to any components before.

Just received the unit but will have to wait till the weekend to hook it up to the main system. I am using it right now with my PC and listening through my AKG headphone. It is amazing and beyond by expectation. The sound is balanced and not harsh or fatigue. The sound stage could be a little larger but it has not been broken in I assume. It is definitely not PC sound and much closer to that of my main system.

March 15 2014 update:
Been listening to it for the better part of today after warming it for several days. The sound is very articulate and sweet. The old DAC and pre-amp was warmer, may be a little too warm in comparison. It is not analytic cold. So I'd say it is quite neutral. It allows the music to come alive. It reminds me of my old passive pre-amp (plain volume control between DAC and power-amp). While the sound stage is a little narrower than the Theta, it is deeper and more vivid like I could reach out and touch the artists. Bass is more substantial such that I had to turn my sub woofer way down. The old system is more lay back as far as musical attack is concerned but for this system, it is fast and yet not harsh at all. It is very enjoyable. The one thing I wish it had is a balance dial but lacking it is not a deal breaker. I can't imagine spending more unless the rest of the system (including the listener) is much more sophisticated.

Have spent the last few days using this unit and I am very satisfied. The DAC was very easy to setup and get going. I connected it to my iMac 27 inch via a USB cable. Immediately I found that it was connecting up at only USB 1.0(allowing only up to 96K)according to the Mac. I then got out the manual and found out USB 1.0 was default and a procedure had to be followed to configure for USB 2.0 to allow the Mac to send up to 192k FLAC tracks. I followed the easy steps in the manual and got it going in a couple of minutes. I was then able to play WAV and FLAC 96/24 tracks from the Mac. Sound quality was outstanding. Beautiful non fatiguing sound with a very good stereo image. Even compressed 384k AAC tracks sounded very good. My vinyl is probably going to see a lot less usage now.

The only cons I can see with this unit is that for setting up some things, like the USB2 for example, you have to refer to the manual for the easy procedures since it is not intuitively obvious from the controls what procedure needs to be followed. That is a very nitpick gripe though. This unit does what it is supposed to do and provides excellent sound quality.

The only reason I gave it four stars is because it doesn't come with the required usb bluetooth receiver. I pretty much bought it for that purpose and aside from the extra hundred dollar cost it works and sounds excellent. Pretty cool listening to my iPhone 4s music files thru my big Carver home system and I can use my phone like a remote control for volume and music selection. Streaming pandora sounds even better. Who needs an expensive music server when this turns your phone into the same thing. Have my CD player and dvr running thru this too and it's a major improvement in sound quality and detail over not using a dac at all. Worth the expense if you have the extra six hundred bucks to burn.

I purchased two of these, one for my office, one for streaming music from a streaming music player, both turned out to bring out the detail in the music driven from the Net and my PC. wouldn't go without them....makes all the difference when listening to streamed music....

very high fidelity, would be tough to go back to stream audio without it. Immediate difference noted when hooked up the stereo. I do wish it had a remote control or auto on off/on. Little bit of a paid as you have to manually turn it on and turn it off. Quality of build is excellent and meets all the reviews.

Needed a better USB DAC. The digital preamp is very good on this device.

Вы, конечно, также могут использоваться классический HD, поддержка до 2 ТБ (как мне кажется), но я считаю, SSD-накопители выше, для этого типа использования, в первую очередь для скоростиà доступа, но также из-за того, что потребляют гораздо меньше (не нужно внешнего источника питания, просто напряжение, подаваемое от USB), они маленькие и легкие, не нагреваются и не шумят. Имеется также порт USB, асинхронный, для подключения непосредственно к ПК, минуя сетевые (то, что — асинхронный позволяет исключить возможные искажения в передаче сигнала вследствие несоответствия тактовой частоты между ПК и CXN).

драгоценный камень — возможностьà контролировать плеер CXN с помощью смартфона, установив приложение от Cambridge Audio, очень хорошо сделано и гибкий, из которых — можно управлять всеми функциями (также поставляется обычный пульт дистанционного управления, но от смартфона — безусловно, более практично). С помощью приложения вы может выбрать канал потокового радио, или прокрутите ВСЕ библиотеки, ВСЕ устройства, подключенные к CXN, так же, как если вы ищете песни на вашем смартфоне. Идет на самом деле подчеркнул, что — можно иметь одновременно пиù вещи, связанные с проигрыватель CXN: компьютер, ПК (или Mac), или пиù unità NAS, жесткий диск, жесткий диск подключен через USB, memory stick, и — можете выбрать из всей музыки, что вы — хранить. Вы можете воспроизводить также музыкальные файлы, которые присутствуют на смартфоне. Очевидно, все это может сделать даже с пульта дистанционного управления или непосредственно с различные команды, присутствующие на передней панели проигрывателя CXN, в том числе колесо/джойстик.

В конце концов я решил соответствовать CXN за отличный усилитель CXA из той же серии, что кстати гарантирует удобство функции вы сможете управлять двумя устройствами, как бы только один: вы можете включить/выключить набор, регулировать громкость, слушая, как с прилагаемого пульта дистанционного управления либо через приложение на смартфоне. (CXN и CXA они оснащены пультом дистанционного управления каждый, идентично, с которой — можете пилотировать оба).
Как CXN если CXA они, очевидно, также входы и выходы, оптические, для которого я могу подключить через цифровой оптический кабель TosLink (SPDIF), а также с классическими аудио кабели RCA.

Оставляю SSD всегда привязаны к плеер в usb в сети, аì даже не видно, она сзади с проводами. Я в паре читателя к его усилитель cxa80 и в случаи B&W CM5. Кабель RCA перемонтажа купил здесь на amazon по отличной цене. Звучит чудо!!! И думать, что я принимал Naim, но это по-моему звучит, в размере намного меньше. Я удалил CD, радио антенны, у меня все только на две части, проигрыватель и усилитель, и я наслаждаюсь музыкой, как никогда раньше. Держу растение в салон 65 кв. м. и заполняет комнату хорошо, мне сказали, что мне нужна динамиков от пола, и, вероятно, в этом растворе и звук будетà еще лучше, но мне не хочется попробовать, già così — замечательно.

Отличный компонент hifi, универсальность, получает многочисленные радио с приличным качеством. Интегрируется с Airplay по wi-fi с Mac, iPhone и звук кажется значительно улучшить по сравнению с прямым подключением на моем заводе. Подключен также smart tv с оптическим кабелем и звук воспроизводится через систему hifi каждой передачи выгоды от звуковой привыкание и на самом высоком уровне

Отличный продукт. На мой слух, мне кажется, действительно способен сделать upgrade качества звука даже в трансляцию Apple Music. Предварительный усилитель, ЦАП, позволяет играть от любого источника поток (Amazon, YouTube и т. д.) быстро подключиться к сети wi-fi дома.

До сих пор я использовал Pioneer N-50A, сегодня я был доставлен Cambridge CXN V2, и я обнаружил другой мир, хотя я не эксперт.
кстати, о Pioneer я связался, чтобы целый год их службы поддержки так и не получил ответа.
