Printing, initially okay. Resolution, so-so. By far, the biggest disappointment is the scanner. I tried scanning a 7 page document...several times. It retains only the last page. To send the document via scanned document, I would have had to scan each page - 7 attachments for 1 document. I don't think so.

I bought this refurbished from Amazon in 2006. It's been through several moves and is still going strong. We use the copier feature a lot, which works great, as the ADF can hold up to 50 pages. I did research on this printer and found reviews saying it was better/more reliable than newer models. I've had mixed results with the bypass paper port (where you stick one sheet of paper in), sometimes things get chewed by the printer, but not always.My biggest complaint is using the ADF (auto document feeder) to scan several pages of paper into the computer and turning them into a single PDF file using the supplied software. The problem started a few years ago and I suspect it may have been a defect in the machine all along, hence why it became a refurbished item. The problem is it will scan a few pages and then jam in the ADF. When it jams (it doesn't really jam but the machine thinks so), it will do it consistently for a while...if I futz with the software settings, eventually it will work again, but I see no logic to the pattern. I have spent about an hour on the phone with Brother (I give their CS a 4/5 star rating) which resulted in them referring me to a local repair shop. I called them and they and I concluded it is a software problem, since the ADF never jams when copying (copying being a stand-alone procedure, no computer required). I have the problem on two different computers, with different OS (xp and vista), with different versions of the ControlCenter printer software (v.2 and v.3). The repair shop said they had not heard of this problem with my model or any of the Brother printers. I might have just received a lemon.Nevertheless, I would buy a Brother printer again. It's been a great machine other than the frustrating intermittent scanning problem. I think HP has the software stuff down pat, but I have had too many problems with their hardware to consider them again.

MFC-8440 - Can't beat it for the price.After more than 43,000 prints the unit works the same as it did on Day 1. Over the entire period (4+ years now) it has jammed probably fewer than 10 times.The only item other than toner that has required replacement is the drum (standard consumable item).Scan speed is acceptable for home office use; it is not for high-volume business use, ie hundreds of pages a day.The document feeder feeds reliably provided you don't use flimsy, tattered, or "slick" paper, typical of all printer/scanners in this price class.I would definitely buy another MFC-8440 when the time comes, or even as a backup.

I must say that I'm quite pleased with this multifunction machine, which I bought when my ancient, single-function inkjet finally threw in the towel recently. I read reviews of about 50 multifunction machines in the major PC mags and sites before settling on this one. I wanted all four features (copy, scan, print, fax) in a reliable machine for the lowest price, and this was the professionals' consensus. I have the factory-remanufactured version, also available from Amazon for over $100 less -- those are just fine, and after the rebate, the price is irresistible.On major benefit of this model is the flatbed, which allows you to copy and scan anything, not just standard letter- or legal-sized pages (in other words, only things that will go through a document feeder). The laser printer is sharp and fast; I've had no jams. Remember to "fan" new reams of paper as a standard practice; static electricity is the most common, and avoidable, cause of paper jams. The copy/fax quality i fine. Some people say that the scanning is a little weak, but unless you need truly professional-quality graphics, it's quite adequate for casual use.I've knocked off 3/4 of a star for the setup. Actually, it's not that bad, but you are going to need to actually read certain portions of the full manual; you probably won't get away with just the Quick Setup Guide. Setting up the fax to work with a connected answering machine was, honestly, moderately complex. I had to read that *entire* section in the manual (BTW, you'll find what you need on pages 1-13 to 1-22). Once I read it, though, it did tell me exactly what I needed to know, and exactly what I needed to change about my setup. You *MUST* connect the answering machine to the MFC-8440; you can't connect it to another phone jack somewhere else in your house. Also, you'll probably need to decrease the number of rings on your phone, and you may need to include a 3-5 second pause at the beginning of your outgoing message.It's worth your time to look up whatever you're trying to do in the manual, rather than just guessing. Try to resist the initial reaction of that being a "bad thing" -- a (good) manual actually benefits you. For example, there are quite a few optional settings that I find very beneficial and convenient, but you might never notice them if you don't actually take the 10 minutes to really *read* Chapter 4. I'm a technical writer and very critical of documentation, and I have to admit that this manual is very clearly written, and rather well done overall.For the sake of honesty, I must also tell you that Brother MFCs do sometimes take a bit more than their fair share of power (on startup only); I've docked them the last quarter-star for that. As I expected from reading reviews, my bedroom lights *do* flicker very briefly when a print job first starts up. Although it only lasts a half-second, it can be a little weird.A few last tips: Do turn on the sleep mode to conserve energy and preserve the life of the scanner lamp. Do visit the Brother website immediately after setup, and periodically thereafter, for driver updates. And finally...how it hurts my penny-pinching heart to say this...buy original Brother toner cartridges. Factory-remanufactured is probably okay, but definitely no refilled ones. I have just read *too* many reviews that talk about the accidents that can happen with those. Even a small leak of toner inside the machine can ruin it. And although (new) "compatible" cartridges might not leak, pray that nothing ever goes wrong, because using them voids your warranty. If you do some smart comparison shopping, buying new, original cartridges isn't too bad, especially if it extends the life of a major piece of equipment like this. Like so many other things these days -- like books and music -- you'll pay way too much if you buy them in a retail store. Look for online sales, and check Amazon Marketplace or many of the other auction sites.I use this machine on a wireless home network including one Windows ME HP desktop (I know, yuck; I'll replace it when the hard drive dies) and one good Windows XP Compaq laptop. I have no trouble printing from either, and I have no interference on my phone; I have only one DSL line in the entire house. I'm sure this machine could support a home business, and probably a very small office; it is a glorious luxury for regular home use, which is my lot. Overall, I'm delighted with my EMFC-8440 and feel good about the purchase. I would definitely recommend it to you.

Given the price, the quality and performance of this multi-function printer is very good. Scanning speed, especially that for black-and-white document, is among the best. Document feeder works quite reliably, rarely jams up.The following are the issues we had with this machine, most of them with regard to software:(1) the native PDF converter is outright bad. For the same resolution, it results in a file size at least five times as much as Adobe Acrobat. For routine electronic document handling, we are used to Adobe Acrobat's file size of about 30k-50k per page at 200 dpi. Because these documents need to be stored in large quantity and e-mailed routinely, even a 50% increase of the size would be burdensome, not to even mention five times. Apparently, software engineers of Brother did a terrible job on this. Fortunately, we figured out a fairly reasonable workflow by using Adobe Acrobat with the printer in tandem to solve this oversize problem. If you don't have the rather expensive Adobe Acrobat, you might be out of luck.(2) the interface is decidedly crude. And no update has been released since its original release. It just lacks some of the refined details, which in an office setting significantly affect efficiency and workflow. For example, every time when a scan is started, it defaults to the choice of "color scanning" at A4 size. It does not remember your last setting. We do most of our scanning with "black-and-white" at letter size. That means we will have to change the selection every time when we do scan. How difficult is it to have a feature to just remember the last setting? Again, software engineers at Brother did a very poor job. This seems trivial, but if you are using the printer on a regular basis in an office setting, it significantly affects efficience and productivity. It is such a big issue that we would absolutely be willing to pay twice as much for a multi-function laser printer just to get a better workflow.(3) the bypass feeder has poor paper alignment. The printed material is in most cases seriously misaligned on the paper, making the bypass feeder basically useless for printing checks or formal documents such as letterheads. That means for that type of work you will always need to use the main paper tray. This is quite inconvenient because normally you would stock the main paper tray with regular paper and use the bypass feeder to print envelopes, checks, and letterheads. Because the printer has only one paper tray, the poor bypass feeder has a significant negative impact on the workflow.We would not buy it again. However, if you don't find the above issues a problem, this printer is a great workhorse.

It is difficult to know where to begin. This machine wants to be a FAX, so you have to wait after turning it on to be able to copy or scan, else it will try to FAX what you put in. The scanner is slow and of poor quality even at high resolution. It started complaining that it needs a new toner cartridge 6 months ago; I'm still using that cartridge. When it needs paper it tells you to add paper, then gives a long annoying beep when you open the paper tray and tells you the paper tray is open. When there is a jam, it tells you to open the door to clear the jam, then gives a long annoying beep when you open the door. You have to periodically re-install the software to keep it running. The website is close to useless. You have to re-enter things like the current time every time you power cycle it (I hoped it would get the time from my computer, but no such luck). There is more, but 'nuff said.

Excellent product, well worth the money! The Cons I've listed are in fact just minor irritations to me, but are certainly worth consideration to anyone purchasing this product.Pros:* Faxing quality is fast and clear.* Scanner quality is very good. Document scanning is fast with great clarity.* Copy quality is impressive. Documents are almost as good as the original, and with the document feeder you can just walk away and come back when the job is complete.Cons:* I've hooked up my answering machine through the MFC. Due to it's answering every call to check for a fax, it defeats the caller-ID function of the telephone to which it has been connected.* Power sucker! This thing uses alot of power to do it's job. So whenever I send a print-job to the MFC, the lights dim momentarily. Also, it draws too much power to be connected through my 1500-Watt UPS.* Printed/copied documents come out in the recessed bay, which can be irritating trying to fish out smaller paper sizes.

Well,we had liked this product for the 1.5 years that it worked.... We are sending it back under the replacement warranty that we purchased. It now sounds like an old vehicle clunking down the road. It was used relatively lightly for printing and fax in our small office.

My company bought this machine in the hopes that we could take our archived paper documents and convert them into usable digital files.18,000+ scanned pages later, this machine is still working like the day we picked it up and it has yet to show us any problems. We use the software provided coupled with Adobe Acrobat Professional and we have an excellent workable product.We use this machine for a network fax, copier and scanner and we REALLY use it. Hundreds of faxes out and in each day and frequent scanning. I think its been about a year now.Its larger than some of the other MFC's on the market but that is the only really con I have for this product.

This printer-scanner-copier-laser printer has been a real workhorse for our Real Estate Appraisal office. We have it printing around 50-100 pages a day (mostly faxes), with no problems over the past several months.It's simple enough that not a single person in the office has had any difficulty using it for any function. The document feeder has never jammed (a problem with our previous fax / copier), and costs are reasonable for the ink (~$40 for a 3500 page compatible toner cartridge. ~65 for a 3500 page original manufacturer cartridge). It is also a flatbed, which is much preferable to the roll-type scanners/copiers. The paper cartridge holds up to 250 sheets, which is fine for our purposes.It is not the quietest machine available, but it is not unbearably loud either.The price here at Amazon is high, however. I'd shop around and try not to pay more than 350 at the time of this review. Also, as has been the trend for laser printers these days, this item does not come with the required USB a-b cable, so if you don't have a spare cable sitting around, you'll need to buy one. It does not auto-staple and it's sorting function is hampered by the fact that because it is a smaller machine, it really does not have anywhere to sort the pages to, like some of the heavier duty machines you might see at a University or Kinkos.Otherwise, perfect for the small to medium-sized office.

I agree with others the Brother Technical Support is virtually nonexisting. My MFC8440 works great as a printer and dedicated fax. It does not work with TAD the same way as my previous MFC8300 (the best machine I ever had). This is the first great disappointment because setting does not allow change that. PC fax works properly as well. However, PC fax software can not be used by serious business user. It is very limited. Total disappointment is the scanner. Software can not find it. I tried all possible connections: direct printer port, direct USB, network. Tech support lady told me the only version equipped with optional Brother network card will allow me to use scanner. I did not buy it. Summarizing: you can get better product from other manufacturers.

I am having very good luck with this machine. Set up was a snap and I am very pleased with the print/copy/fax resolution. I have not used the scanner yet. I am also really amazed by the print speed versus the HP machine which costs more. After amazon pricing and rebates, this machine was $130 less!I'm only giving it 4 stars because I was surprised that the scanner light stays on all the time. I guess that is to preserve the bulb because cyling on and off will shorten its life.

I had nothing but problems when installing this piece of software from the disc provided and the Brother website is next to worthless. I did eventually get the printer set up but continued to have conflicts with my other color printer. The 8440 would try to print everything weather I sent it to a different printer or not. And in addition to trying to print items that were not intended for it I guess it would try to use that printers driver and all that would come out is garbledey gook! After about a ream of paper I uninstalled/reinstalled the printer using the windows interface and driver only. Another thing that bugged me about the software is that it installs as an always-running service, which degrades performance and delays start-up time. I must say that hardware-wise I have not had any problems and the printing/scanning/fax functions are decent.

An earlier posting was incorrect by stating that the user will pay more for this printer because it has a separate toner cartridge and drum. The fact of the matter is that some printers have intergrated the toner and drum and others have two separate units. If you calculate the cost of this printer over 20k pages you will find it is much cheaper to operate than most of the competition regardless of the separate drum. Just because the drum is separate doesn't mean it's more expensive to operate. The bottom line is that a "careful shopper" should look at the initial cost and the ongoing cost of each printer and compare them for the best value.

We have purchased 2 of these multi-function copiers for our office. Mine is used primarily for a fax machine. We LOVE them! The document feeder allows me to fax more than 10 sheets at a time. It is so simple to set up & operate. It is so easy to switch between settings. I love the large paper tray. I am extremely happy with my purchase, and the price.

I purchased this MFC after my previous Brother MFC died, getting the dreaded error 41. I was very leary at first to buy another Brother product and even purchased a Lexmark X4270 MFC (which I returned the following day) and then a Canon L80 (which I also returned two days later). I run a home office and needed something reliable enough to withstand a tremendous amount of faxing and copying.This machine does it all! It receives clear, clean faxes very quickly and I was particularly impressed that it comes with a full sized toner and drum as opposed to a starter cartridge that most machines come with. That's savings right off the bat! I was receiving faxes within 15 minutes of opening the box. I can't believe I wasted the time, work and effort with the other machines I bought prior to this one.I'd recommend this product to anyone looking for a reliable, user friendly multifunction machine.

Had no problems with set up as other reviews suggusted. Second paper tray is need for checks, the manual feed slot only takes one piece of paper at a time, would be better if it held more.

At this point I have used the machine only for printing and copying. For those functions it works quite well. Copies are clear and legible. Machine response is prompt. Printing speed is good.
