Beware, if you are just reading reviews people post a few months after buying!

Until it bricked itself one year in, I was happy with this printer too. It worked with basic installation procedures, and I didn't mind that princessy, unwakable sleep issue. I just walked over and pushed the button. I don't print that much. I'm still on my first toner cartridge.

But two weeks ago, it stopped working completely. Display and wifi light just blink now. It won't turn off with the power button. My computer can't detect it, even plugged in, even when running th Brother Remote User Software package. No way to update firmware or drivers on a printer that can't be found. Trouble ticket to Brother is in, but has produced zilch in the way of solutions.

I think this printer is hosed, and I think one year before obselescence is ridiculous. My old Samsung laser lasted 9 years. Booo! And, beware!

The HL-L2340DW has replaced my decade-old HL-1440, and I'm completely happy with it.

Wireless setup is a breeze, even without a computer. It took me 8 minutes (timed) from unboxing the printer to my first wireless print on Mac OS X.

Thanks to the 16 character LCD display, you can pretty easily poke your way through menus to configure everything about the printer, including Wi-Fi networks (Network -> WLAN -> Setup Wizard). Or you can just use WPS: press a button on your router, press a button on your printer, and you're done. Both methods worked fabulously. Once connected, you can visit the printer's admin interface in your browser to tweak addition settings or configure Google Cloud Print.

The printer immediately appeared in Mac OS X 10.9's "Nearby Printers" list, and drivers were automatically downloaded and configured the first time I attempted to print to it. It took a bit longer to set it up in Ubuntu, but it did eventually work under Linux.

One word of warning: when the printer decides that it's time to replace the toner, it will simply stop printing, even if there's still adequate toner remaining. Per the user manual, you can "turn on Continue Mode to force the machine to continue printing even if the control panel indicates that it is time to replace the toner cartridge." Unfortunately, "when the Replace Toner error message is active, you cannot turn this mode on unless you change the toner cartridge."

...So make sure you turn on Continue Mode early in the toner's life. It's easy to set on the printer itself (General Setup -> Replace Toner -> Continue), or via the web interface.

Otherwise, I'm pretty happy. It's a printer.

this printer is the worst of the worst. do NOT buy this piece of crap.
1) it produces this extremely annoying high frequency whining noise ALL THE TIME, even when it's not printing.
2) it goes to sleep and does not wake up at all. i have to restart the printer every time i try to print something out if it's just only been a few minutes since i last printed.

is it really THAT hard to make a printer that just print stuff out??????? Brother, you are the worst bro. i will never buy any of your crappy sheet from you again EVER.

IF YOU ARE USING GOOGLE CLOUD PRNT:
I purchased this for my mother, who uses a Chromebook. Out of the box it WILL NOT register under chrome://devices (after completing its WIFI setup, which was successful). The printer does not show up as a device. I reset the printer and still was not successful. After setting up the WIFI again, I connected to the printer via its IP address (using the Chromebook). I was able to update the printer’s firmware using this wireless connection method (Google Chrome browser). After the firmware update was successful the printer was able to be seen (and registered) in chrome://devices. I was then able to print using Google Cloud Print.

This printer has great print quality and superb speed. I was able to print off 12 Ticketmaster tickets, with lots of

Pretty sad is an understatement. I read the reviews about the difficulty in connecting this printer to wifi but thought I can handle this.
Having read the reviews I knew not to spend more than 20 minutes trying to set it up by wifi. I connected it to the USB printer cable I had been using and set it up with the Win 7 computer that my former Brother printer was on. All went fairly well and it wanted to install a firmware update. OK ..... I started that and about 40 minutes later the install bar had not budged much past 1/10 of the distance. I cancelled out and discovered another window had popped up directly under that one. By this time I was in no mood for any more of this and just wanted to see if it would print. It did.
I went to the android app I had installed in my first effort and it said I needed to update the firmware. Great, I thought. When I said yes to update it wanted a password. Nowhere in the instructions or disc did it tell me a default password. A quick Google search told me it was initpass. Pity the folks that aren't aware and don't reset it.
I'm typically pretty happy with tech items and will give a positive rating. I do think it prints well and once connected it seems to work well. At this point technology should be pretty much plug and play. Shame on Brother for the shoddy documentation.
I will use the printer for a few weeks and leave an update on wifi connection and print quality.

Update about three weeks after purchase. I have not had the problem of not wanting to connect after going to sleep. It has been printing well from different devices. I am not changing the number of stars because I'm still not impressed with the shoddy documentation.
Another update. I dropped the review to one star because it began dropping offline and it is a major pain to constantly have to reset the wifi. Again, most tech should be designed to plug and play. The print quality is still good and toner usage is minimal but the network issues are unacceptable.

For Mac users looking to turn on Continuous printing, you can do that through your Mac just as easily. I connected a USB cable (or connect via wifi), Go to Apple Icon > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, click on 'Brother HL-L2350DW', click 'Options & Supplies' button then 'Show Printer Webpage'. You don't need to login first time here.

From here if your device is connected to your network you'll get a web interface of all the printer configurations you normally have to use the buttons to toggle through. Now click 'replace toner' and set it to 'continue'. You can also turn off deep sleep here, under 'auto power off' > 'off'.

Took me about 30 seconds from the time I plugged in my usb cable into my mac.

You're welcome.

NIGHTMARE.
This was a nightmare to deal with in spite of them advertising it as 'easy set up!'
Before buying this, take a look at the top of the printer: there is a teeny little window and in teeny little letters it says'sleep or deep sleep' and there are arrows. There are no clear instructions, and there is no clear message window to tell you what the problem is. I tried rebooting, and tried many different wi fi devices (ipad, kindle, macbook and my samsung phone) and if it had just printed from even one of them easily, I would have
kept it. I would unplug it, try to reboot it and the only thing it ever printed out was the alphabet and not understandable directions.
If you want to take HOURS and hours of time to try to get it to work, then THIS is the machine for you! If you are technical and know the
numerous letters of your network or can easily contact your cable company (which also takes hours and hours) then THIS is the machine for you.
In the 21st century, there is NO reason why all wii fi devices can't easily sync with a printer. In the 21st century, a company COULD give you
a window and an 800number that could assist you with set up. I will never buy another Brother product - that's for sure. Thank goodness I was able to return it!

Плохо

I would not recommend this printer to anyone looking to print from a Mac because it was a huge pain to set up and then keep it working properly (read on to understand why!). I'd keep looking for a better option with foolproof installation on all platforms.

I bought this printer based on the good reviews to print both from my kid's chromebooks and my MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.5). It took longer than it said it should to install including enabling Google cloud printing for the Chromebooks, but I was able to print from both devices. However, the next time I tried to print from my Mac, it could not find the printer. After some research online, it appeared this was due to the printer being in deep sleep mode and the printer not automatically waking as it should when sent a print job. I didn't think this would be too bad of an issue if I could remotely wake the printer each time before sending the job. But when I accessed the printer settings page (http://10.0.0.130 for my printer) I could verify the printer was in sleep mode, but there was no way to change it or wake it up. I was annoyed at the thought that I was going to have to walk over to the printer every time I wanted to print and press one of the buttons to manually wake it up before sending a print job (defeats the purpose of having a wireless printer!), but the printer didn't even wake up pressing its buttons (despite the manual saying this should work).

Alas, more research revealed that the REAL problem might be my Mac wasn't finding the printer because of its IP address. I was first clued into this by dupuytren in this thread -- http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1849993 -- where he said that the printer and router address need to be similar, i.e. starting with the same numbers as in 10.0.0.XXX. His weren't and changing his printer ip to be similar to that of the router fixed his problem, at least until he ran into another issue that caused him to buy another router (no thanks!). But this thread (http://www.fixya.com/support/t6151863-mfc_7840w_printer) gave me hope my Mac still wasn't finding my printer because of its IP address. So (thanks to dupuytren instructions) I looked up and verified my printer's ip address on the printer itself:

1. On printer press Up/Down or +/- button until you see Network. Press Ok.
2. Using Up/Down, follow WLAN>Press OK>TCP/IP>Press OK>IP address.
3. Write down IP address, including all 0's. Mine was 010.000.000.130

Then I went on my Mac to see if I could manually add the printer using this IP address. So I opened System Preferences, Print & Scan. Hit the (+) button to add a printer. (Note my printer did not show up on Default tab since my whole issue is my Mac cannot find the printer!) On IP tab under address, entered the IP address I just wrote down (010.000.000.130), leaving Protocol as "Line Printer Daemon - LPD", Queue empty, Name - gave it something useful, Location empty, Use - picked this printer model driver (guess it was there because I previously installed it). Viola! I sent a print job and it found the printer and started firing up!

Why did this work? Actually I'm not sure. I find it hard to believe that the when I set up the printer set up on my Mac by IP address that the extra 0's mattered. Though I had previously tried adding this printer on my mac using the IP address without the extra 0's (10.0.0.130) but it gave me an error. Now, I wonder if it has to do with the "WLAN" setting on the printer. I read somewhere that Brother printers won't enter deep sleep if that is on. So may that is why it is printing fine now -- it no longer seems to be entering into deep sleep mode. To check your printer WLan setting, go to the printer page in your browser and under Lists/Reports, print "Network Configuration".

Note, one step I had also done (but I don't think made a difference), is change the IP setting on my printer to be static instead of the default auto (used the buttons on the printer and the directions provided by dupuytren). But I don't think this mattered in my solution because I never changed the IP address and it has remained the same since I first connected my printer. But this will prevent it from changing moving forward.

As to my rating, I really like the speed and output of this printer but cannot give it more than 3 stars since it was such a pain to get working with a Mac, which is advertised as being compatible with!

4/11/25--UPDATE
Since I got this printer successfully printing jobs from my Macbook, I noticed the printer no longer enters DEEP SLEEP mode only SLEEP mode. I'm not sure what change I made that caused this to happen, but I suspect this is why I am able to print.

11/20/2015--UPDATE
For whatever reason, this week I had a problem with my printer set-up. I think somehow the static IP address I set was changed, but the problem it caused was that my kids Chromebooks could see the printer but it was showing as "offline" so they could not send it print jobs. This problem persisted even after I reset the printer to the same static IP address I had been using. So, I figured the best thing to do would be to delete the printer from Google, re-register it to my account and then reshare the printer to my kids google accounts. Well that's when my problems really started! When I went into the printer web interface (http://10.0.0.130 for my printer), selected the "network" tab, then "protocol" and then clicked on Google Cloud Print, I got to the page with the button to "register" my printer with Google Cloud Print. Well it didn't work and gave me an error that it couldn't connect to Google. After calling Brother support, they told me it was a problem with my Google account. I disagreed with them, as it was never getting to the step where it prompts you for your Google account information. After much insistence, the support person escalated my call to "level 5" and said I'd get a call back from a software engineer-type person the next day. Meanwhile, I kept repeatedly going through the network setup wizard (using the buttons on the printer) and lo and behold it finally set it up slightly differently. It automatically used I think DCHP as the boot method and then that caused the "gateway id" and "subnet mask" to be populated with real numbers (previously both all zeros). When I retried registering my printer with Google, it worked! I since went back and changed the boot method to static ip address (it had already assigned the same static ip address value I had been using). The only other parameter difference I noted is ipv6 is now off (had turned on earlier to see if that would help). Needless to say, I printed out all the printer settings, so if I ever have an issue again I can reset the settings to this now working state.

As an IMPORTANT aside....in all my research to get this working, I found online directions on HOW TO DISABLE THE DEEP SLEEP (that is not an option in the printer web interface or on the printer itself, well at least not an obvious option). Again, I'm not positive if the Deep Sleep mode being activate is why I had my original problems with my Macbook not being able to access the printer, but I'm pretty sure it was the reason, so I'm happy to know how to turn off DEEP SLEEP and keep it off (as when my new issues began this week, DEEP SLEEP was somehow reactivated on my printer).

To cancel DEEP SLEEP on Brother Printer, using the buttons on the printer...
(source: http://serverfault.com/questions/416422/brother-4150-cdn-deep-sleep-how-do-i-disable)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Use arrow buttons to scroll through menu choices...
Go to General Setup then OK
Ecology then OK
SLEEP TIME then OK
While sleep time is display push Down Arrow and BACK at the same time! Then press OK.
DEEP SLEEP on/off toggle by Arrow keys
OK to SAVE Deep Sleep off.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: brother support, I finally did get a call back (2 days later) from a software engine-type who was more knowledgeable. I had already fixed the problem by then on my own, but he did seem interested in testing some of this out. Also surprisingly he had never heard that the DEEP SLEEP setting was something that could be turned on/off, and said while it might be something they don't want to advertise to the general public, it would probably make sense to incorporate it into their own internal support database.

The Wireless Device Setup Wizard is buggy and does not work. The "Temporarily use a USB cable (Recommended)" option doesn't detect the printer and disables bluetooth input devices instead. The exact same connection works for printing and for configuring the device via the printer driver. I used a Mac running OS 10.13.6 and the wizard version that was current as of 25 Jan 2019.

Using the System Preferences Printers & Scanners utility, you can use the backdoor over the USB connection to configure the device. None of the materials that come with the printer tell you the "Login" is "initpass".

Once you find the wireless setup sections there are several other problems.

The Wireless (Setup Wizard) section doesn't let you enter your SSID, so if you don't broadcast yours you can't use this tool at all.

The Wireless (Personal) is ironically the way to configure this for a managed wireless network. However, even though this is advertised as supporting 802.11n networks, it **does not** support 5 GHz. Very disappointing.

Also, it only supports a "Passphrase" for WPA2 pre-shared keys that is limited to 63 characters. The problem is the wireless standard supports 64 hexadecimal digits. Every other device on my networks — include our Xbox One and Nintendo Switches — have no problem with this. Again, very disappointing.

So this is being returned. I understand it's a cheap printer, but this is really basic functionality that should be the default at this point in the tech lifecycle.

This is a nice printer when it works. I read the comments about the Deep Sleep issue and I should have paid more attention to them. I would rename if Deep Coma as it will not awake when using the wireless connection unless you turn it off and then off again. To bad, very easy setup on wireless. Suspect that if you use the printer hard wired it will wake up when you send a document to be printed but when on wireless it won't.
Again, nice unit but I only wanted to use it wirelessly. Attached a screen shot of what happens when you try and print wirelessly and it's in the Deep Coma stage.

Brother HL-L2350DW model. Great product. Set up in minutes. Just pressed the WiFI button on the printer and the WPS button on my modem - and the printer recognized it instantly. Looking forward to saving $$$ by not having to buy inkjet cartridges for my old Epson NX415 - which was constantly telling me that I needed to replace the color cartridges even though I had NEVER printed anything but BLACK. What a sham. No more inkjet scam for me. This Brother laser printer prints in black only (which is what I need), seems to be well made, and fits nicely on my desk (smaller than the old Epson). So far I am a happy customer.

Works great. Wi-Fi can be set up (tediously) from the printer's tiny LCD screen, which saved me tracking down a PC or Mac. The output is fine for text documents; the dithering of greys is not great, but that's not important to me. The web interface is a bit clunky, but it gets the job done. Importantly for me, it works with Cloud Print, so I don't need to install drivers everywhere.

If you're having trouble with the "Deep Sleep" mode that sometimes makes the printer inaccessible over the network, try this:
1. Using the up/down/OK keys, select General Setup > Ecology > Sleep Time on the printer's tiny screen. You should see "1Min" (or something else, if you changed the sleep time).
2. Press the back button and the down button at the same time. You should see "Deep Sleep".
3. Press OK. You should see "On".
4. Press up or down. You should see "Off".
5. Press OK. You should see "1 Min" again.
6. Press OK again. You should see "Accepted".
Deep Sleep should now be disabled, and your printer should stay accessible over the network.

Also, if you then find the printer is still offline in Cloud Print, you can toggle Cloud Print off and on in the Network > Protocol screen of the web interface and it will come online again; you won't need to re-register it or power-cycle the printer (which might also work).

I bought the Canon LBP600D or something like that, and it was awful. No mac drivers (we have a mix in our house). Come on Canon, it's 2014, not 2002, every device should work on Mac, Windows, and even iOS and Android! Get with the times. Anyway, I tried to install that and it didn't work on my PC. I went to install it like every other printer I've ever used by plugging it into power and my PC.. wrong! You're supposed to install the software first. Couldn't ever get it to work, and this is coming from someone who used to setup technology solutions small offices such as printers, servers, networks etc. If I couldn't figure that out, then how can the regular non-tech person?

Anyway, onto this printer. The Brother HL-L2340DW setup was a breeze. As easier as you could hope for, really. I placed it on the desk, pulled all the shipping tabs out, and protector pieces, installed the toner cartridge very quickly, then READ the instructions where it says to plug the USB into your computer (unlike the stupid Canon). I plugged it in, Windows immediately said "got it dude, you're good to go". Did a successful test print and moved on to downloading the driver software to setup the wireless. (I don't care to use the CD's hardware come with unless absolutely necessary as the driver on the site is much more likely to be updated). I downloaded the software at http://www.brother-usa.com/support/ModelInfo.aspx?R3ModelID=HLL2340DW#.VF0y6fldXch and installed it using the Wireless method (you have to be plugged in so you can easily setup WiFi on it via your computer, this option in the install is just telling the installation how you plan to use it so it can take the next steps accordingly). I setup the wireless, did a test print from my Macbook, success. Opened up my iPhone and went to the print option on a picture, and there it was, the Brother HL-L2340DW. Selected it, pressed print, and out came the print in absolutely perfect quality.

This was a very, very, easy to install wireless printer. I highly recommend it based on it's seamless install and print quality alone. If you search you can find replacement cartridges for $17 that offer up to 2600 full page prints. Not bad. The only complain I have is the built in power cable. Most devices will use the standard 3 prong power cable like you find in the back of a typical PC desktop computer. This one is permenantly attached, not making it easy to buy a longer one if necessary. I have about 4 inches of slack after setting it up, thankfully, but not everyone else will be so lucky.

My main purpose for this printer was wireless, random printing of documents. However, I bought it for my girlfriend as she's in her grad program and needs to print about 10-50 pages a day and she was waiting in line at school every morning for 30 minutes to use their printer. I believe, in my experience, that a black and white laser printer is the best way to go for any student looking to print a ton of essays, articles, documents etc. You are paying a bit more initially for the printer, but between the volume of prints it is capable of yielding on a single toner cartridge and the efficiency, it'll more than pay for itself! Think about it, up to 2600 prints for $50 (if you choose to buy the main brand toner replacement, or go ahead and buy the knock off brand for $17 and save money, or heck, look up on youtube "how to refill toner for Brother HL-L2340 printer" and you're sure to see some great tutorials and save even more money!) or you can go out and buy a $30 inkjet printer that gets 200-300 prints per cartridge, but how often do you end up replacing that cartridge? About 5x-10x more than a laser printer. Ink cartridges are about $35 for a complete pack. Multiply that by 5 (how many of those you'd go through to achieve the print volume of one toner cartridge for a laser printer) and that's about $175 depending on the inkjet/cartridges. Suddenly you're in the hole, and the laser printer may still have some life left in it's toner.

It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. We have no plans for photos on this, that's what our simple all-in-one is for. Periodic use, never in volume.

Leave comments and I'll answer any questions you might have. Good luck!

Summary: I love it, it works great, it was easy to setup, and the design is very modern and incredibly compact!

Ужасно

Nobody should buy this printer. I've never owned a more frustrating piece of technology. I'm a software developer, and I know my way around networks. And this thing was just impossible to keep running.

As other reviewers have said, Brother's efforts here are unconscionable. Shame on them. The UI is beyond horrendous - a one-line screen managed by seven buttons with which you have to navigate a menu tree that is exhaustingly ill-conceived. Want to confirm a choice? Click the up button! Or sometimes the OK button. It depends. Most of the time the one-line screen is not backlit.

At no time does the power button actually do anything. To turn off the printer you'll need to unplug it. Ridiculous.

To make matters worse - if that's possible - anytime you have to reboot your router, you will have to go through a complete WIFI re-setup. That's not how devices are supposed to behave on a network. Other devices have managed to reconnect all by themselves since the 90s.

The deep sleep mode problem is extremely painful. Whenever I tried to use the printer, like others, I had to fight with it to wake up. After many failed attempts I found the solution below. This kind of behavior in a product indicates that nobody tested it. Deep sleep mode renders the printer unusable. Every usage that occurs after the sleep interval has elapsed - mine was set to 1 minute! - will require extensive user intervention.

I shouldn't have to go looking for solutions to a problem like this. And I most definitely shouldn't have to find said solutions in a comment on an Amazon page:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R6R3ZFGMQUXS6/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_viewpnt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00LEA5EJM#R6R3ZFGMQUXS6

Sadly, after 'fixing' the deep sleep problem, the printer absolutely refused to reconnect to wifi. I spent three hours wrestling with it. Never again. I smashed it (with joy) and threw it in the bin. My wife is not happy with me.

Although the price point is indeed low, it's still a ripoff. Printing was less frustrating than this in 1995. Look at what people have had to go through to try to keep this thing working. There should be a support group.

I'm guessing that pointing to links of other negative comments might be frowned upon. But, moderator, please note that I'm trying to save people from the pain that I went through, and isn't that what the comment section is for? Life is already too hard to waste time with a device like this.

The following is just a short list of highlights of people suffering with this wretched piece of kit:

I purchased this because some site had the gall to list it as one of the best printers of 2018. I now realize that that had to have been a paid promotion. I can't find the link now, but shame on them as well.

I’m a 77 year old retired scientist with considerable knowledge about computers. This review is for the HL-L2370DWXL model.

A major reason for my purchasing this unit to replace an older Brother printer, was that the Amazon website (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0763TXM5Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) stated in two different places that the warranty was for two years. However, the warranty statement packed with the printer stated that the warranty was only for one year. The product description page at Brother and the support page for the printer both stated that the warranty was for only one year.

I have set up several different printers over the years and connected them to my Wi-Fi system. This was the most difficult unit to connect. I downloaded the very latest printer drivers and other software items from the Brother Site and attempted to get things going with that software.

Setting up the printer required reading through an online user guide, reading the printed quick setup guide that came with the computer, downloading and reading a PDF reference guide, downloading and looking at a PDF drum replacement guide in case that had relevant information, and I’m not sure I got all of the relevant documents.

First I tried connecting to my network using the simple practice I have done for other printers of pressing the connect button on my router and then pressing a button on the printer, carefully following the installation software instructions. The printer could not find my network which is a broadband high-speed network that offers both 2.4 and 5 GHz connections. I was attempting to connect to the 2.4 GHz network. The installation software could not find the printer.

When the above option did not work, I followed the option suggested by the Brotherhood software of resetting my router and rebooting my computer. The printer at one point stated that it was properly connected to the network. Happy days I thought. Nope. The installation software stated that it was continuing the installation and then reported that the installation had failed. I checked other devices in the house to be sure that the Wi-Fi was working properly.

I then switched to the choice offered by the Brother software of connecting a USB cable between the printer and my computer that runs Windows 10. I followed all of the steps suggested by the software and at one point the printer said it was connected. Again, the printer during some of my repeated attempts stated that it was connected, but the installation software then stated that it was finishing installation and then reported that installation had failed. My computer reported that the printer existed but was off-line.

The next step involved manually entering network information. At one point I had to manually enter into the printer my network password. I took a photo of printer LCD screen showing the password that I entered. Then I pressed the appropriate printer button to have the printer connect to the network. The printer then reported that the network password I had entered was incorrect. The photo I took of the LCD screen on top of the printer showed that I had entered the correct password.

Over several hours I tried various other steps over and over and over again. Finally by disregarding the Brother directions and just doing what I thought might work, I actually got the printer to find the network and to connect. The software instructions from Brother were worthless.

I spoke to a lady at Amazon, and Amazon is going to check with Brother about the warranty. The lady reported that she could see the two different places on the Amazon website where the warranty was described as two years, and she reported that the warranty information on the Amazon website was based on what Brother told Amazon. Amazon is going to try and contact Brother for accurate information about the warranty. The Amazon lady – like all Amazon representatives – was very helpful in doing the very best she could for me. Because she will be away tomorrow, I suspect I won’t know about the printer warranty until sometime next week. As I explained to the lady, no verbal assurance from Brother will be satisfactory. I need a printed and signed statement about the warranty given that the one year warranty sent me and two different pages on the Brother website all state that the warranty is only for one year.

Potential purchasers of the printer should be aware that the small LCD panel on the top of the printer contains information that is important at various stages in operating the printer. It’s also important to have easy access to the seven – yes seven – buttons on the top of the printer. The older Brother printer that I am replacing had a single button and was much simpler to set up and vastly simpler to operate. The place where I initially put the printer did not provide easy access for reading the LCD panel and operating the seven different buttons. I had to move the printer to a different location further away from my computer and now have to walk around the bookcase to get to the printer to see what the panel says. A better placement of the LCD screen would’ve been to have it on the front of the printer.

A printed sheet enclosed with the printer suggested that user change the password for the unit. I’m not looking forward to that process because everything about this printer seems to be extremely complicated.

At various times the panel has flashed a cryptic statement about whether or not I wanted to do something regarding “T1” paper. I have no idea what the message meant and finally found a way to turn off that message, but have no idea if the message is something crucial.

I suggest avoiding this model until the warranty situation is clarified. Only purchase the unit moreover if you don’t mind spending several hours trying to connect the unit to your Wi-Fi network so that you can print. The older Brother printer that is being replaced was much easier to connect to my Wi-Fi as were several previous printers.

Con. Extremely difficult to set up. Complicated to operate, requiring pressing seven different buttons and looking at a tiny LCD screen while doing that. LCD screen on top of unit rather than in front. Buttons on top of unit rather than in front. Warranty appears to be for only one year despite the product being advertised as having a two-year warranty.

Pro: The two-year warranty if it actually ever materializes.

i owned a brother laser printer similar to this one lasted me for about 4 years with no issues. i use it every single day, i dont print a ton of pages, mostly shipping labels, so about 3-7 a day for the last 4 years, but it finally died, and it was cost effective to just buy a new one than try to fix this one.

i figure i would get the wireless one, even though my old printer was hooked up to my main desktop computer thats always on so i did have a "wireless" connection to my old one figure it being built in would be a plug, boy was i wrong

to print wireless literally takes a minute for 2 for the signal to be read by the computer, i couldnt imagine how long it would take if you had to print a ton of pages.

it FREEEZES a lot, almost every other day, and you literally have to unplug the unit for it to reset, as their is no hard switch on this device or a cable to unplug, the plug is built into this unit, so you need to unplug from the wallsocket which for me is a hassle because its located behind the desk an not easy to reach without moving things around. also unpluging it resets the wireless settings, so you have to do that all over again.

just horrible, i plan to return this model and find another one, possibly the simple one without wireless printing as i stopped using it due to it takes absolutely forever to print.

Had a Brother HL-2140 for years and loved it until it shorted out. Thought I would try another one of their products. Bought this one as an upgrade mostly due to the Automatic Duplex Printing function. Once I installed printer to find out that it does NOT have AUTOMATIC duplex printing, only MANUAL duplex printing (see screenshot). I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Brother trying to figure out why to have the rep tell me that they're packaging and website are wrong and the printer does not have the feature. They offered no apology or response, then when I asked which of their printers actually did have automatic duplex printing the rep couldn't tell me and just referred me to their website despite their website being wrong about this printer as well.

Unfortunately, I can't trust them now so will be looking elsewhere.

I can't believe a product manufactured in 2018 by a major manufacturer has such a deeply flawed setup system (circa 2007) and such poor communication with its end users. Just spent more than one hour getting a simple printer connected to my Mac/Time Capsule network. What a joke. The instructions on the enclosed leaflet: useless
The instructions on the website: useless and pictured steps don't even match what's on the control panel OR software
Driver downloads and setup program: useless and again photos and steps do NOT match what actually appears on the printer control panel or software.
WiFi button on the printer: useless and misleading (it only works with WPS compatible routers).
USB Connection method that setup program tries to impose on you: Useless. (Software never acknowledges the USB connection between computer and printer when you actually make it, and then times out.)

IT IS INEXCUSABLE IN THIS DAY AND AGE THAT BROTHER GIVES US FLINTSTONES ERA SETUP TOOLS. BASED ON THIS I WILL NEVER -- EVER -- PURCHASE ANOTHER BROTHER PRODUCT. I am actually laughing about how bad it is.

The printer is trying to communicate with you by printing. So, I wasted more than 30 pages to check my wifi connection status. It doesn't ask me whethet you want to print it or not. Just print it with meaningless words.
Moreover, the connection is unstable enough to disappoint me. I should check the connection per page.
Most importantly, the margin is always cut off. I don't know why. Regardlss of computer and file type, the printed document is not centered.

The worst printer ever.

Great printer for the price! One issue I ran into was replacing the toner. I had a new toner to insert, but the printer kept saying "replace toner" despite my following all of the instructions. I almost gave up after hours of troubleshooting...but then finally found a method to reset the printer's sensor of the toner. I hope this review can be found by anyone who runs into this problem, as I looked at the reviews to try and find the answer as one of my search strategies:

1) Open front cover and leave open
2) Turn printer off
3) Hold the 'go' button while turning on printer
4) After 3 seconds release the 'go' button
5) (USER MODE) will appear
6) Press the 'go' button NINE times
7) The Wifi LED will flash once
8) Press the 'go' button 5 times (nothing will happen after this)
9) Close the cover. Your toner is now reset to 100%.

This is the worst printer I have ever experienced in my life. I have a MacBook Pro and yes, I read the reviews, but sill me I thought, I can do this!! Fast forward to a week later and this POS sits by the front door waiting to be picked up by UPS tomorrow. I ran through *every* solution offered on the internet and this thing still disconnected every night. Every morning I would go in to the printer only to see it in "SLEEP" mode. NOooo amount of button pushing or printing could get this sorry excuse for a printer to come out of deep sleep. Nope. Complete waste of my time and my money. As I said. This is going back and I will no longer be using Brother machines.

UPDATE: a few months later, bumping it up to 4 stars from 3 - never had any error and, for home use, I made a great investment. Once you're done with the devilish setup, it's a great quality printer.

So... I am by no means a newbie when it comes to computers, software or hardware. But setting up this printer was an enormous source of frustration (one star off for this). To the point where, after 1 hour (!) I had to call Brother. First call, 15 min wait, it got disconnected. Second call, 20 min wait, I finally got a representative. It took us 10 minutes to go through the setup. So let me share some details that you might find useful if you decide to go with this printer.

- you MUST have a 2.4 Gz wireless network for the wireless printing to work.
- USB cable is not included, but IT IS NEEDED temporarily for the installation (still, you can do it without. see bellow).
- their CD is useless for Windows 10 (you find drivers drivers online, though, quite easily)
- if you put the printer on a shelf that is higher than your eye sight, bad luck; you'll have to stand on a chair to see the ridiculously small display (see attached picture). Also, I am afraid that every time there's an error I'll have to get on that chair to read the display. Great disadvantage and looses another star for it.
They sent me an email with the steps that we went through (wireless setup without USB cable) and I am copy/pasting them here.
I hope they'll be useful for those who want to install it by themselves:

1. Gather these settings for your wireless network:

SSID or Network Name

The name of your Wireless Network or Access Point

Network Security Key (Password)

Encryption Key, WEP Key, Passphrase

2. Have you previously set up your Brother machine with a wireless network connection?

- Yes: Reset your machine's network card. Click here for instructions.

- No: Go to step 3.

3. Start the wireless Setup Wizard.

a. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Network and then press OK.

b. Press ▲ or ▼ to display WLAN and then press OK.

c. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Setup Wizard and then press OK.

4. If "WLAN Enable?" is displayed, press ▲ to select On. Your machine will search for and display a list of available networks.

If your network is set to hide the network name, then it will not appear in the list. Click below for instructions on how to manually add your network name.

Add your network name

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display your network name and then press OK.

If your network has an Open System and does not use a network key, then the machine will now try to connect. Go to step 8.

6. When prompted, enter your network key and then press OK.

To enter text, hold down or repeatedly press ▲ or ▼ to select the character. Press OK to select the character. Press BACK to delete the character you selected.

If the display is blank after entering your network key and pressing OK then you have entered the wrong network key. Verify your network's security settings and try again.

7. Press ▲ (Yes) to apply your settings.

8. Your machine will try to connect to your wireless network and print a report.

- If Connected is displayed, then the connection was successful. Press OK then Cancel and then go to step 9.

- If Wrong Network Key or Connection Failed is displayed, then your machine did not successfully connect to your network. Press OK. Click here for helpful troubleshooting steps to help fix this.

The Brother machine only supports WPA2-PSK with AES. If your network uses WPA2-PSK with TKIP you'll receive the "Connection Failed" error. You may also receive this error if you enter the wrong Authentication or Encryption method.

9. Wait about a minute and then print the Network Configuration report to verify that your Brother machine has acquired a valid IP address from your router. Click here for instructions.

10. Is the IP Address listed on the report valid for your network?

An invalid IP address would be all zeroes, an APIPA address (169.254.x.x) on an Infrastructure network, or an address within an incorrect range for your network.

- Yes: Your machine is now successfully connected to your network. You may now install the printer driver (Macintosh instructions click here or Windows instructions click here), use the Brother iPrint&Scan mobile app, or print using AirPrint or Google Cloud Print.

- No: We'll try to help you fix the wireless connection.

We needed a low volume printer to replace a Dell we used for 5 years without problems. The HL-L2350DW was easy to install and printed adequately three times over two weeks. Immediately upon pushing the on button for the fourth printing need, the circuit breaker tripped in the room. This has never happened before in the 15 years we've lived in this house and used this room as a home office. After we re-set the circuit breaker, the same thing happened when the printer on button was pushed. After re-setting the circuit breaker again, we unplugged everything in the room then plugged the printer directly into the socket rather than the power strip surge protector, and again the circuit breaker tripped. To be sure nothing else was wrong, we re-connected the computer, monitor, modem, and telephone; all worked perfectly. We found on Google that other Brother printer models caused the circuit breaker to trip so we called Brother Help. Upon hearing of our problem, the agent suggested we return the printer, then spoke to her supervisor. When returning to our call, she read to us the circuit requirements for the printer, the amps pulled, etc. and suggested we call an electrician to fix an obvious problem in our home. The original offer of returning and replacing the printer was off the table. Given the history of similar problems with Brother printers and the dismissal of the initial option of return/replace, it sure seems that Brother was unwilling to stand by their product. The result: we returned the printer to Amazon and will purchase another brand printer. I will never buy another Brother product based upon this experience.

I have a Chromebook and am in the midst of some grad school courses that require a lot of documentation - thus time for a new printer as well. Specifically, wireless, as all my work is kept in Google Drive. Researched this printer thoroughly, and thought being pretty tech savvy, I could have it up and working in no time. Wrong. The set-up guide is minimal. No, I did not want to have it set up as a "classic" printer, therefore needing another computer attached to it. Just give me GoogleCloudPrint!
This is what I found: plug it in, press the buttons that get you to the wifi connection. Connected? Great...find the IP address it has been assigned and type that into your web browser. It will let you set up all options from that site - and definitely change the sleep time so it doesn't hibernate every other minute.

Use this guide: Brother makes it hard to find on their site.
http://download.brother.com/welcome/doc003013/cv_mfc4510dw_eng_gcp_b.pdf

Walk through those steps and you can now print wirelessly. Once I found this guide, I had it printing within minutes. After hours of useless FAQs from GoogleCloud, Chrome, and Brother.

Excellent print quality for my needs. Now a very happy student.

This printer worked fine for 10 months, then suddenly stopped being detected by the host computer (USB Interface). I tried the usual; new cable, different port, different machine, all gave the same little windows popup message when I plugged in the printer: “USB device not recognized: The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.”

The message seemed straightforward to me—the printer broke, but Brother support saw things differently. I followed through all their steps with two techs, patiently—I work in tech and I understand you have to assume the worst about end users – and the printer was not detected by two different machines, with or without the Brother software installed.

In the end Brother decided not to honor their warranty and declared the issue a cable problem, despite the fact I tried two different cables while I was talking to the techs, a Belkin USB 1.1 and generic USB 2.0 cable, both 6 feet and both known to work with other devices. After getting off the phone with them I tried a third cable, another generic USB 2.0 2m cable, with the same result. That’s three 6.5ft cables that work with other devices but not the Brother printer, besides the 15 ft (AmazonBasics) cable that worked one day and then not the next.

It’s pretty clear when you are being given the proverbial finger, and that’s basically what Brother did here. The problem is there is no choice any more. Everything is junk (or if you are a conspiracy theorist, made to fail), so one brand is as good as the next. The last printer I had (not Brother) died just out of warranty and I doubt any other manufacturer would give satisfaction either, so I guess I’ll buy another Brother 1-year disposable printer. We have entered the era of hardware-as-a-service.

I've had HP Laser BW printers for a long time. When my recent HP printer, which i love, sytarted jamming occaisonally, i researched and then bought this Brother Compact Monochrome Laser Printer, HL-L2350DW.

1. The footprint is quite large, not compact in my opinion.
2. It draws a lot of AC power. I had it plugged in to my UPC and when starting up the power surge would overload teh UPC. That never happened with the HP. So now I have it plugged directly into the wall and it has no surge protection or Battery back up.
3. Loading paper and adjusting for sizes is not that easy or intuitive.
4. When the starter toner cartridge ran out, I replaced it with OEM Brother cartridge but it failed to recognize it or work properly. I keep getting cartridge error messages. So I've had to dig teh old HP out of the garage and plug it back in. It still works great except for the occasional jam.
5. Contacted Brother Tech Support for help with my problem and have not heard back from them yet.
6. See picture of my current situation. Brother printer makes nice printer stand. That's all it's good for.

Pros: Easy to set up (wireless is way easier than my previous Brother), works well, has the functions I need, toner is less expensive. Has an LED display to tell you what's going on.
Cons: Had to look up how to cancel a job. No button for that. The manual feeder -- be careful to adjust the guides and get your paper in straight. I had to reprint a bunch of stuff that came out crooked. This is a big issue for me as I use the printer to print sheets of labels, and it does not want to take the label sheets through the tray.
It's not super speedy. No LEDs to instantly tell me what is wrong -- have to get out of my chair to read the display.
It's a perfectly fine printer and I hope to get several years of use from it. Due to the "cons" above, it's not a 5 star, though.

Update: I've downgraded my rating. It ran out of toner on me with no notice, and in the middle of doing something important. The printer was very noisy before it ran out of toner. I got an icon in my task bar, but when I clicked on it, there was no content. Plus, the manual feed issue is a real pain. I print labels every week, and messing with the alignment is not worth my time. I contacted Brother, and I was told that there is no way to print labels outside of the manual feed. I decided to keep it till the toner ran out, then get rid of it. Toner is out. Bye bye Brother! Unfortunate since my last Brother was a workhorse for 5 years.

It works if you plug it in. The Wi-Fi is 100% not functional. I spend about 2 hrs trying to get the Wi-Fi to work. I'm a seasoned Wi-Fi diagnostics tool app developer. If I couldn't figure it out, I believe it dose not work. Although I may have received a defective unit. There's no way to tell. It has an insanely poor UI. Very little thought put into making this thing work via Wi-Fi. I also hisses this eerie high pitch sound when left plugged in.

This trick fixes the ERROR
Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps.
Turn the printer off.
Hold the ‘go’ button while turning the printer on.
After 3 seconds release the ‘go’ button.
(USER MODE) will appear.
Press the ‘go’ button NINE times.
The Wifi led will flash once.
Press the ‘go’ button 5 times.
Close the cover. Your toner is now reset
Press OK 3 times to print a status page and this will show that the toner has reset back to 100%

I bought this printer for two reasons:

1. I wanted wireless printing from my iPhone. It has worked perfectly EVERY TIME...It fires up quickly from the other room even when it has been sitting idle for weeks.

2. I did not want to have to deal with ink. Ever. I’m so over issues with expired cartridges Or not being able to print in black, even if black is full, just because the pink Cartridges is low. No one has time or money for the stupid games just to get you to buy more ink. This one takes a single black toner cartridge. I’ve printed a few hundred pages over the last 9 months. No issues.

I haven’t owned a printer in 10 years because I hate the issues when I just want to print a page randomly here and there. I stressed over printers for weeks before I picked this one. If it’s possible to actually love a printer, then it’s this one!

Here's how to reset the "Replace Toner" message on HL-L2350DW
1. Open Cover
2. Press and release Back and Go at the same time, twice, in less than 2 seconds.
(it took me a bunch of tries to get this to work right - I had to use separate hands for each button. If it isn't working, close the cover, turn the printer off and back on, open the cover, and try again. And keep trying.)
3. The screen will change to TNR-STR. You can cycle through TNR-STR (toner starter), TNR-STD (toner standard), TNR-HC (toner high capacity) using the up/down arrows.
4. choose the correct toner and press OK.
5. Choose "Reset" - Down arrow = Reset; Up arrow = Exit.
6. Display should read "Accepted."
7. Close the cover and print the "printer settings report" to verify the toner is back to full. (arrow until Print Reports, OK, Printer Settings, OK. Look at top of page 2.)

I'm a software engineer and it took me almost an hour to set this printer up. Not the first time actually -- the first time it connected in about 5 minutes and started printing. The second time I went to use it, about a week later, my mac permanently showed the printer as offline or in use depending on the screen. I tried to remove the printer from my printer settings and go through the setup wizard again, to no avail.

Here's what I did to get it working again:
- Reset the printer: Initial Setup > Reset > Ok
- Turn deep sleep mode off: General Setup > Ecology > Sleep Time > Press down and back together > Ok > Use arrow keys to go to Off > Ok
- Connect the printer to my wireless network: Network > WLAN > WPS if your router supports it, otherwise Setup Wizard, select your wireless name (this is called an SSID), enter your wireless password with the up and down arrows. Once it shows as connected you're good
- Get your printer's IP address: Network > WLAN > TCP/IP > IP Address. Write this down
- Make sure you've installed the device driver for mac from Brother's website
- Add your printer to your mac: Go to your Mac's 'Printers & Scanners' settings > Click the + button on the bottom left > Select the second tab at the top: IP > Put your printer's IP address in the 'Address' bar

And then it should automatically detect your printer. Click 'Add' and you should be good to go. Hope that helps.

I then bought the cheapest Canon printer I could find ,[ $29 ] and I set it up the first time thru, with no problems. After too long of a time experimenting, I finally arrived at the point to enter my wifi password to enable the printer (yes, that antiquated method was their only option.) It would NOT allow me to use capitalized letters or symbols. I called for support but the person on the end of the line had no idea how to help. I returned the printer and will never touch a Brother product again.

Хорошо

Great printer. Love it as solely wifi printer in our closet. Great with my iPhone. No app download needed. Common problem is with deep sleep mode. Can be toggled off, only found in an Amazon review. Just want more people to know how.

General setup/ Ecology/ Sleep time/ press down arrow and cancel together/ OK/ Toggle on or off with arrows

Day 3 of having it.
