To be blatantly honest, this is probably the best printer I have ever brought. Not only does it have many of the same advanced features of other (more expensive) all-in-one printers on the market today, it is designed so much more ergonomically.From the built-in network connection slot to connect straight into your router, to the paper feeder that is actually within the machine (like an expensive laser printer), it has a high amount of functionality, and functions pretty quickly.There are quite a number of options to choose from when printing, and the options are all very straightforward. According to what I have heard, that ink for this printer is also on the less-expensive side, which only adds to the advantages. Good luck choosing!

I would strongly recommend that the buyer truely beware of refurbished products. The company that refurbishes them "Doesn't" test them thoroughly. Copy/Scan/photo works great but the fax is locked up. That was my main purpose of purchasing this device so I don't have to go out and fax. I'm stuck with a real piece now until I can budget for something that works.

We purchased the 440CN last week for home and home office use. Our main need is to replace an older USB-only scanner with a networked scanner that can be easily shared among several users, and we also needed a light duty, low volume stand-alone copier. The 440CN was a breeze to install, the construction is outstanding (better than most current SOHO printers/scanners), and the driver install, config and functionality is superior (much better than our past experiences with Epson and HP printers). We use computers heavily, and of all the peripherals we have ever purchased, this device is one of the best values we have ever gotten. We are delighted!Like all printers, the 440CN allows you to choose the output quality for each print/copy, and if you choose low or medium, the quality is reduced (exactly as is done with other brands), but is faster and uses less ink. Of course, if you can also choose to print in high quality as well, in which case the printer takes longer and produces a better quality result. Using inkjet paper instead of copier paper (and telling the print setup that you're doing so) also clearly enhances print quality -- as is true with all inkjet printers.Our experience with this device is that most reviews of it have been overly critical. Yes, if I were desiring to print photos or outbound marketing materials, I'd get a different printer designed specifically to product more-vibrant colors than this machine can produce. However, if you're looking for a home and home office printer for average personal use, this machine is entirely satisfactory in print quality, and fantastic in overall value because of its broad functionality.

In testing this printer I discovered that the sharpness greatly diminishes when enlarging past 130%. Color saturation in general copies is poor for reds (looks very faded) and yellow wasn't very bright. The paper tray capacity is great but the top piece is very flimsy. Wonderful printing in black and white at 100%. This would be an excellent printer for someone needing larger sized copies in black and white or with small amounts of color. Not very good as a photo printer. The wireless works fine too. If you need sharp enlargements and better color saturation (photos and copies) I would go with one of the HP printers with 9600 dpi.

There were some issues with the product at delivery and we were truly impressed with how quickly and fully the service unit addressed our concerns to our 100 % satisfaction. I would certainly return to this vendor.

Great printer at a great price. Color documents look good. I have not yet tried the photo printing feature, although I have plugged in my camera card and practiced editing pictures using the on printer functions. The wireless setup was very easy! I love printing from my laptops from anywhere in the house!

Great value for the money, was ridiculously cheap for a printer that does almost everything. I ideally wanted one with a fax, but there was no point as I don't have a home phone and I can fax from my computer. Good copying both black & white and color, although for some documents it copied a bit dark, fortunately you can change this (temporarily) easily and adjust the contrast. Flat bed is good, doesn't cut off the edge like my last printer did. Good paper tray that fits a fair few pages in (something like 30-50) which is good my old printer didn't have this and the paper used to dry out. Have not yet tried for scanning or photo printing, but the normal printing is good quality, it needs to be adjusted to fast normal, black and white and auto if you are printing stuff like maps that will be thrown away afterwards. I do this to save on ink. It defaults to color, normal, photo. I have to read the manual to see if this can be changed. Very easy to set up and use I didn't read the manual, just the quick start guide. The only thing you need to be aware of is the USB cable that connects the printer to the computer is not included. My advice would be to buy this online at the same time, as we ended up getting one from Staples that was $20. It will copy without this cable though.

This is probably one of the best values out there in a MFC. It connects to your home network and enables all the functions (scan, print, FAX) through your network and this unit. Most others only will yet you print or require an expensive add on card.Another important aspect of this uint is the fact that it's multi-platform and works seemlessly with PC's and Mac's (and I beleive there is a Linux driver as well). This was the most important thing for me. Since booting Windows from my house 3 years ago, I have been a 100% Mac household (and not regretted it 1 bit - it's the best thing you can do), I wanted to ensure that I would be able to use all the functions on the Mac. In the past, this has not been an issue with printers, as they pretty much all support Macs. But with MFC's, many support only printing and not the advanced features. Not with Brother - this thing works flawlessly on Macs.And I have a work supplied Windows laptop and even that works perfectly with this unit.Installation was very simple - just plug in the Etnernet cord to my hub and install the software. Just a warning to Tiger users - skip the CD and download straight from Brother. The CD in my box was old and did not support Tiger. Apple's Zero-config Bonjour technology found the printer immediately and installed it. After that I was printing immediately. They even have a Dashboard Widget that monitors ink levels and offers you a glimpse of the status panel.On Windows it was similarly as easy - I used the CD and things just installed. Although it installs an annoying tray icon at startup (as do most Windows programs now), but that was easy to disable without any functionality loss.The printer on this is of very good quality - maybe a notch or 2 below my previous Canons and Epsons, but it is still a high quality printer. I would suggest using Injket or Multifunction paper with this uint for best results. Prints using regular copy paper were OK, nothing spectacular. The speed, like all injkets is a tad overrated as the printer can bog down when printing graphics or photos. But overall, it does a great job and prints are legibile and look fine.Scanning is great. The inlcuded Document feeder will let you insert a stack of 20-30 pages and hit scan and pick what computer you want them to go to. Then they will show up in a folder on your computer. It's that simple. You can pick different formats - PDF, TIFF, multipage TIFF, JPEG, etc and have a good scan.The photocopy function is equally impressive - you can stack 20-30 pages in it and it will copy all them at a decent clip. Works as advertised.FAXing is cool as well. Since this unit has a built in FAX machine, you can either scan from the ADF or send a FAX from your computer. From the computer it's as simple as setting the Brother printer and telling it to FAX instead of print. Add the phone #'s and you are all set. It will send the FAX to the machine and it will FAX it out to you. I successfully faxed a 75 page document from my Powerbook though this unit and it took 32 minutes to get to the destination.This unit can also multitask - you can be scanning and print to the printer. It's a little slow, but it works. You can also FAX out and print as well.Ink usage seems to be great. Cartridges are relatively cheap and last for 500 pages. There is a high yeild black that will give you 900 pages. Their estimates seem to be close to the mark.Some may complain about the cleaning cycle on this printer. Not sure what the fuss is about if you get the life Brother says (500 pages) who cares? As long as it keeps the printer ready to print, that's all that matters - most inkjets on the market today have this same cleaning ritual. My Epsons did/do it. My previous Canon i560 does it. It's just a fact of life with inkjets. And the cleaning does use all the colors - again, a fact with inkjets. It's not some consperacy among the printer manufacturers or any other nonsense, just the way ink works. They are not like a ballpoint pen where you throw it out when the ink drys up.Also, the other complaint is if the printer is out of a color it won't print. Don't know what other inkjets the user's have had, but they are all like that - my Canon won't print black text if the colors are out, my Epson won't and I think HP's won't either. Same with Color Lasers - it's a fact of life.If you primarily need this for a FAX or B&W documents and are bothered by this, there are other Brother MFC's that are black and white only.All in all, this is an AWESOME machine for the price, and one of those things I'm glad I bought. Like my Macs, it just works all the time.

This is without a doubt the worst printer I have ever owned. When not jamming it just errors out. I had hoped with the good reviews I could get a good printer at a good price. I guess I got what I payed for and nothing more. I will replace it right after the holidays and throw it in the trash. My daughter asked if she could have it and I am saying no. I don't want to have to pay for the wasted paper and ink. I would have given it one star if it had simply quit, but no luck.

I've had this printer for a few months and haven't had any trouble. My only complaint is that the paper tray is shallow, so it runs out of paper frequently. The best thing about it is that it uses very little color ink when printing ordinary black ink documents---practically none. My previous printer, an Epson, used lots of color ink for black and white documents "so that the ink jets won't dry out and clog," as the company says. I've saved a lot of money after switching to a Brother.

I really like this printer, fast and easy to use. HOWEVER, the print quality is lacking. As others have said, the colors are washed out looking and not very sharp. OK for text, but photos look bad. We are going to keep it, but we may get another printer strictly for photos and good copies (maybe a Canon).

I love the features of this printer. It won't print if I use the phone- hate that. It prints pictures too slow. I'm still learning this printer, but I emailed the manufacturer about the problems I'm having and never got a response (it's been two weeks). I guess I'll have to call and maybe I'll get better results.

A 4 in 1 plus wireless, that works BRILLIANTLY and I got it for 89.99!!

My mother bought this printer for me because she swore up and down that she owned the same model and it was great for her. I'm not sure if she was mistaken or I got a lemon, but I was only able to use this printer for 3 or 4 months, max. I never even made it past the cartridges that came with the printer. I got paper jams every time I tried to print, and now I guess I have an 'eternal' paper jam because it won't print at all now. I've tried everything, and I'm pretty handy with jams because I remove them all the time from a much larger printer at work. Yes, it was slower than a turtle, yes, it was always cleaning.. but at least it was better than nothing. Now I can't even say that..! What a piece of junk! I guess I'll be trying a Canon now.

I bought a new printer specifically because I needed to print hundreds of business cards. The 240C was on sale for $60 at Best Buy and looked great from the product description. But when I set it up I couldn't print any business cards. The paper would either jam or it would print offside. I did some research on-line and found that this printer can't print business cards! What kind of printer is that!Also, upon putting it together I could really tell it was put together with cheap plastic. I returned it the next day.

This was very easy to configure with an Ethernet connection to my wireless router, and installed easily. It works well, and the photo quality is very good. Print is clean and very readable. I have not used the FAX, but it seems it will also work well. Manuals are fair.

PurchaseI purchased this printer yesterday. The criteria that I used to choose the printer were: 1) network capability, 2) easy to use, 3) photo printing a priority, 4) store recommendation, 5) available in stock, and 6) store discount. The box was big enough to carry home on the train. Price: US$283. This model is around 3 years old.InstallationDespite the network capability, I decided to install via USB on WinXP. Installation was straightforward, and the installation guide was very clear. You need to read it carefully. I was impressed to find that the small footprint meant it would fit easily into the small space on my desk. You need to configure not only the PC software, but also the printer itself via its LCD screen. The printer is intended to be left on all the time, however, it remembered the settings after I turned it back on over 24 hours later. I am having trouble setting the paper size.Initial TestSo far I have used it for photo and regular printing. The quality of the photo prints is great, particularly in the parts of the image which are in fine focus. You need to load the paper into the cartridge. I got a paper jam when I cancelled a print job. The ink performs brilliantly. So far I have wasted three photo paper pages in printing five pages of photos.ComparisonThe speed is much slower than I was used to with our old printer which was an EPSON Stylus C61. However, the old printer had a lot of problems with ink, and used up the ink very quickly - not to mention the photo paper! It is easier to load the paper into a feeder rather than a cartridge, but once I'm used to that I'll benefit from the cartridge use.I intend to use this printer in our home office on our wired home network.

I have the Brother MCF 210 for aout 2 years now. Let me tell you...the way Brother designed this machine -it is an ink guzzler. Whats more, it spends far too much time cleaning and resetting. Today -it spontainiously diald" out though I was trying to print , not fax.NOT user friendly IMO.

- You can't print unless all ink cartridges are installed and have some ink. For example, if you want to print a black/white document, your color cartridges must be installed with at least minimum ink.- The printer uses a lot of ink- I never used the color ink but somehow it is slowly going away- Paper jams are a hassle- It is completely worthless. Please, spend a little extra and get a different brand.

Our purchase on 04/08/2008 was well worth it. It has a real fax machine unlike so many of them that can't run without the computer or won't send multiple pages. This is the first color copier we ever had before that makes high quality copies fast without the computer running. We can flat bed scan to a file, image, email, or some other software. It prints in very fine detail and will print photos too. It will even print on envelopes if you are clever with the paper tray. We use the Network printer drivers, but the USB cable worked if it is less than six feet. I was a little worried about the warning that too long a USB cable is forbidden. What is against the Brother MFC-465CN is that it has no Windows 98 or ME drivers at all. We can't even get just the printer function of the MFC-465CN to work on the Network. Windows XP does the printing for us now. It should work with Vista, Mac, or Linux. What caused me to think it worked with Windows 98SE was lack of information was on the box about the operating systems? Worse was the Brother web site said their MFC-4650 did come with Windows 98SE and ME drivers. The Brother MFC-4650 printer is a very different printer with very different ink cartridges. We will be keeping this Multi Function Center anyway and our old color printer too.

The black ink works after just 18 months, cleaning many times, try ahcohol to clean it, still not working ,had to throw whole set away, very bad product, I will never buy any Brother product again.The design is that when any ink run out, you can not do anyting, and even you do not use, the ink dry itself, (it cleaning every few days by itself, using your inks).

Although the printer has many functions, it seems it is impossible to print without a paper jam. I have used different types of paper to no avail. Then when it does print, it is slow and needs a new ink cartridge in no time. This is the worst printer I have ever had.

it was average to begin with...then ink issues...now it just says "check the troubleshooting guide" over and over againnever buy these printers

I'm extremely happy with this product since I had the Panasonic before and the Brother doesn't feed the paper from a vertical position, plus it has more functions; COLOR too. I only wish it had a handset finder function.
