These are one of the best bargains out there in hand-held Ham Radios. The dual Push to Talk feature is especially nice--you can have 2 different frequencies showing and easily switch between one or the other. Easy to program using free Chirp Software--don't use the factory software.

Radio did meet my expectations I have a yaesu ft60r that seams to be better built and better quality but the features like the fm radio and the built in flashlight and the ability to listen to the local fire department that used to work for and also the ability to talk to the grms & frs radios make this a very handy radio do to me hiking and back packing a lot The down side to this radio is it is very hard to program Manuel u have to use the Chirp soft ware and u can't not scan other freq that are not already programmed in the preset like my yaesu ft60 but over all it is a decent radio

Very nice radio. Almost impossible to program from the instructions in the manual but searched online and found some great step by step instructions. Still more complicated than it needs to be, but once you have the hang of it it's OK. As far as I can tell you can't program alphanumeric names for the channels from the keyboard, might be able to using the computer interface, I don't know.

The BaoFeng radios can offer a lot of bang for the buck, but they do have both good and bad points, and one of the absolute WORST things about BaoFeng radios is that they are NOT FIRMWARE UPGRADEABLE.
BaoFeng expects to just 'sell-through' into the market all their crappy early firmware radios, and if some unhappy buyers return them, they apparently just get recycled, and recycled, and recycled to other dealers until they are finally sold off.
To avoid having to deal with this, I decided that I would buy directly from Amazon, on the theory that they would be enforcing some kind of standards and moving only fresh newer stock. At the time of my purchase, the only UV-82 series model I could find that was sold directly by Amazon was this UV-82L.
I wanted to try one of each, so I ordered both an Amazon sourced UV5R and UV-82L.
Just as I had hoped, the UV5R arrived with very current firmware, and seems to be working PERFECTLY.
The UV-82L arrived with BUGGY FIRMWARE, and based on the packaging, seems to be RETURNED AND REPACKAGED MERCHANDISE.
I had really hoped to avoid this issue by dealing with Amazon as a seller directly, but in the case of my UV-82, it just didn't work out that way, because my UV-82L arrived showing obvious signs of re-packaging, and with a really annoying bug that keeps the FM broadcast band receive function from working correctly.
This is a bigger deal for me than it might be for some others, because I like to listen to the news every morning while out and about, and was looking forward to using the UV-82L for this purpose because it has a slightly better speaker than the UV5R.
When you first enter an FM broadcast frequency, the station comes up loud and clear and sounds GREAT, giving a tantalizing glimpse of how well it could be, should be, would be, working minus the bugs -- but if you toggle out of FM mode even for an instant - then toggle back by tapping the "F" button again - although the UV-82L does remember your previously entered FM frequency setting - there is NO AUDIO. To get the FM band audio back, you have to re-enter the FM broadcast band frequency AGAIN.
This bug, also kills your FM audio whenever the radio switches to an active channel's audio for a moment and and then switches back. This means that, even if you leave the radio's main VFO on a little used channel, any kind of short noise burst can cut-in momentarily and completely kill your FM audio AGAIN, and once AGAIN, to get it back you have to re-enter the FM frequency all over again.
This is NOT how my other BaoFeng radios work, and NOT how this radio is supposed to work.
It's bad enough that you have to manually enter FM frequencies, or scan for them, and can't store them in memories like comm channels, but having to re-enter the frequency you have already entered over and over again is sheer torture.
Because of their decision to use non re-programmable (OTP) parts in these Baofeng radios, if you get crappy firmware, you either have to just return the radio, or live with it FOREVER, because the firmware can NEVER be user upgraded - so I guess this radio is going back.
In the mean time, you might want to check to see if your UV-82L also has firmware B82S27 - and if it does, check to see if using your FM broadcast band "F" receive key also drops audio every time it is toggled.
You can easily check the firmware on UV-82 series radios by continuing to hold down the "5" key on the numeric keypad while you turn on the power and reading it off the LCD while the radio boots up. The firmware number only displays for a fraction of a second, so you may have to power down and repeat the process a few times to read it accurately.
I would be interested in knowing what firmware versions others are seeing on their UV82L radios from Amazon, and whether they are also seeing the FM receive audio dropout bug I described above???
As several other reviewers have noted, they also appear to be lying about the battery capacity, as the radio does no better than others with batteries with half the specified "3000mAh" capacity they are claiming. I wonder if perhaps they are playing the B.S. game that Chinese companies do when rating their stupid little cell phone "battery bank" mobile chargers - that's where they ADD UP all the individual cell battery capacities, for cells that are actually IN SERIES. So, for example, if the battery pack has TWO 1500 mAH LiPo batteries in SERIES they think you get to claim 2X their individual capacity or 3000 mAh. - WRONG!!! - NO ONE ELSE RATES HANDY TALKY BATTERIES THAT WAY.
So my experience in buying both UV5R and UV-82L radios directly from Amazon was a mixed bag. I felt that the UV5R was a winner - sure it has all the normal crappy BaoFeng firmware annoyances, but at least the firmware is up to date and everything basically works - but the UV-82L was MUCH WORSE - with major features like the FM broadcast band receive function just not working right at all.

I purchased this radio in October 2014. It worked fine until the display text disappeared about a week ago. The light still comes on but I can no longer see the frequencies, menu, and battery indicator. Otherwise the radio still works. I use CHIRP to program it so I still know which memory number holds which frequency as the radio announces the number as I advance through but it is an extra step. At first I thought perhaps I had accidentally selected something on the menu to make the text disappear but I can't find in the instructions where that's an option. I believe this is a fluke as I searched and could not find anyone else with the same problem.

He bought these when he and the kids got their Technician class operating licenses. The price point is unbeatable, and the performance is very good considering the price point. As he became acquainted with other operators in the Amateur community he discovered a lot of old time operators bought these just to see what all the talk was about. Highly recommend along with Ham in a Day!

I believe the AC plugs for the chargers are defective. I ordered another radio and had the same issue with the charger so I plugged it in to an adapter I knew worked and the base charger worked fine so I know it is the actual AC wall adapter that is bad and not the charge base.

If you liked the UV5R, this one will make you like them more. The programming is a little tricky manually, but using the software makes it a dream. And not having to change the bands prior to transmitting on the other frequency is a much nicer added feature in this model.

I love this radio. I used a UV-5r (which I also love) for about a year and bought this one because it's more comfortable to hold. I use it for simplex operation only, usually with DCS. The DCS is compatible with the more expensive brands. I can't comment on operating it using repeaters.
I find these radios to be very intuitive to program. Reception with an aftermarket 12" antenna is fantastic. I replaced the stock antennae before I ever turned it on because of my experience with the terrible UV-5r stock antennae, so I can't give a fair assessment of the antennae.
I give it 5 stars because it's the best $45 you can spend on a radio. There are some quirks and drawbacks (the squelch, namely), but I could buy 3 of these and take my gilfriend to dinner for the cost of a vx 270. It's 5 stars for what it is.
I find these radios to be very intuitive to program. Reception with an aftermarket 12" antenna is fantastic. I replaced the stock antennae before I ever turned it on because of my experience with the terrible UV-5r stock antennae, so I can't give a fair assessment of the antennae.

I'm very happy with this radio! It's great in a pinch, out about in the yard, or a rental car. Communications are usually very clear and with the programming cable that must be purchased separately, configuring frequencies was a snap.

Good rig, I use it in my Prius as a "green" mobile station. I have 2 of the batteries and a charger I homebrewed off the cig plug. So I have a 5 watt mobile and I don't put any stain on the car's batteries. Works nicely with the speaker/mic

As for the operation of the radio, excellent rating. Only one issue, they got rid of the vfo/mem button. The real disappointment came when I turned the radio on and discovered it was a used unit. There is a scratch on the face and had many default settings changed. With 21 channels programed. But, it works ok, and just isn't worth the hassle, since it is working properly. I've got my eyes on you. Amazon, don't do that again!

Excellent radio! It was proved to be better than my other Baofeng BF-F8HP with that I had reception issues. Using now a Diamond SRJ77CA antenna, everything improved and the radio is performing better.

You want a cheap Chinese radio, you get a cheap Chinese radio. It works better with a telescopic antenna. Programming manually is a chore. Battery durability is decent. The hand mike is junk so avoid that.

I bought two of the UV-82 radios to use as handheld marine VHF's on my boat and to use on my hunting lease. I haven't used them for either yet but have tested them to a range of about two miles in a urban environment and the communications were still fairly clear. I expect better range in a rural or marine environment. This radio is easily programmable via the baofeng/FTDI programming cable. It can also be programmed, not so easily, with the keypad if you don't want to name the channels alphanumerically.

The bad:
1. This radio is NOT compatible with CHIRP. Also I've been unable to get the Baofeng programming software to even work. All programming needs to be done manually. If this is your first HT, manual programming may seem daunting. More about this later.
2. If there is a way to review a channel's programming other than by on-the-air testing, I haven't yet tripped over it.
3. These radios have a reputation for excessive spurious output. You the user won't notice this, but unwanted signals emitted by these radios can interfere with other radio services. My own testing, which I'm still validating, indicates that 2nd harmonic output on the 440 band is poor and on the 2M band is extremely poor.
4.Battery charging takes between 4 and 5 hours during which time the radio must be off.
The good:
1. Receive audio is really nice, especially for such a tiny speaker. I've been told the transmit audio is also quite good.
2. Battery life is surprisingly good. I've observed listen-only time of about 16 hours on a single charge.
3. I've had no trouble achieving full-quieting into local repeaters with the included antenna. I don't see a need to buy the Nagoya antenna.
4. If you have ever programmed an HT before, you'll quickly pick up on how to program this one. It really is simple. A couple of hours of fumbling around was all I needed to have it figured out. In contrast, I *never* could program my Radio Shack HTX202 without the manual.
5. Price. A lot of capability for what it costs.
Bottom line: If the radio proves to be reliable and particularly if CHIRP is ever updated to work with this model, I'd likely bump up my review to 4 stars.

Great radio for the money. I ordered 3 for my team. Upon putting on the belt clip, one of the screws broke when tightening them. Screw quality could be alot better. I enjoy the radio for what it is, especially when you are spending less than $33.

I already had one of these radios, which is why we got two more. The newer 82L so far is easier to operate, feels better in my hand, and can monitor two channels with ease. It came with everything but a USB cord. Our electronic Guru had the software and cord to program all of the channels for our group. This is a newer version of the 5r+plus, both should serve us well, don't buy just one, get one for everyone in your family or group.......WB

Excellent value. Works great with very long battery life. Manual is useless but there is plenty of info on the web. Programming a little confusing but once you figure it out its ok. Recommend programming cable for PC. Great TX and RX audio. Included headset works good also. I cannot see spending $300 on a radio when you can get this unit for 1/10 the cost. I do wish it had a VFO/memory button. That is my only complaint.

Bought one of these to try after reading reviews that it's better than the UV5R and it does work but still quirky when manually programming. After programming multiple repeaters and saving to channels, some of the data does not transfer. This issue is likely resolved when programming using Chirp on a pc but haven't done that yet. One thing I don't like is having to constantly turn the radio off and then back on while holding a button down to switch between channel mode and frequency mode is a pain. Hand mic is also a problem with this radio.
I like the UV5R much better.

for a basic transciever you can't beat it. well beyond my expectations. its no motorola or kenwood, but it definitely get the job done for the price. Planning on purchasing 2-3 more.

Uno de los mejores equipos de baofeng
tiene muy buena recepción y transmisión, a diferencia de los otros equipos de baofeng este no se satura tanto la recepción en ciudad.
