  • + - G-Sync

I finally decided to upgrade my clunky 26inch 720p-60hz- LCDTV that I had been also using as my computer monitor; so keep in mind that this review is from someone who was using a pretty low-end monitor.Having said that, let me start the review:Appearance/usability wise: the sleek-black 27inch Asus VG27AH is not the thinnest LED-backlit screen I have come across, but compare to an LCD, it is much lighter and thinner in that contrast. Usability-wise, I find that the design is above average: I can easily raise it higher, or lower it, and can even be tilted at far angles. I find it's easy adjustability to be very accommodating for different sitting postures and viewing angles that I might desire.Turning it on, I was amazed at the colors' vibrancy that a IPS monitor produces. The picture quality is simply amazing. The connectivity works flawlessly. I have it connected via DVI to my computer and HDMI to my Comcast HD-DVR box. (When switching to HDMI, it did take a moment longer than component for the picture to come on, which I was using before; which is supposed to be normal from what I have been told.) It is nice, though, to only have to use 1 HDMI cable for both video and sound. I also have it near a window, and the room I have it in could be bright at times with lights and such, which caused a little glare, but not enough to be an issue. The display has 7 control buttons on the bottom corner, starting from the left: the first button can be used to choose 7 preset viewing modes: Scenery, Standard, Theater, Game, Night View, and sRGB mode. The next button is the 2d-3d-conversion on/off switch. After that is the volume control. Next to that is the Menu button, and then the brightness control, then the source button, and finally: the power button. One thing to note: the button that says 3D only does 2d-to-3d conversion; it's not to be used when trying to view 3D content. When viewing 3d content from TV source, like what I am using: Comcast, you have to hit the menu button instead and choose what type of 3d content you are trying to view. Comcast's 3d is mostly stereoscopic- top/bottom, so you will have to choose that 3d mode by using the menu button. I am happy to report that this 3d monitor doesn't have any problems playing top/bottom 3d images from TV sources that some of the other 3d monitors had. And the 3D looks amazing also. So far, TV content works flawlessly with this screen. It also functions fine as a computer monitor. I have heard some people say that text doesn't look all that great on it. But I can tell you I am typing this review right now on this very monitor, and the text looks fine to me. I don't see any blurriness at all.Now on to the fun stuff: the reason why I bought a 3D monitor was to enjoy 3D. So I had to take 1 star away when rating this monitor, because it didn't come with any software what-so-ever. There was no disc or manual or anything to help in setting up 3d with computer use, or playing 3d. It's entirely up to the buyer to get the 3d to work.My computer: Windows 7-Intel I7-16gb-ram-Nvidia 560GTX- and 1-blu ray-drive. First thing to know: you're going to have to fork out anywhere from 50-150 bucks$$$ more to buy 3d-blu-ray software like PowerDVD, if you want to play 3d blu ray. I had the most success with PowerDVD Ultra 12, both playing and picture quality. The first 3d movie I played on my computer was Avatar, and it simply looked amazing.Second: Trying to get Nvidia's 3d vision to work with passive 3d was problematic. So I gave up and just used the 2d-3d conversion button on the screen itself to play games in 3D. The only game I really play is Guild Wars 2...and WOW(no not the game "WOW"), but wow it looks amazing in 3D on this screen--talk about immersing yourself. Altough I have to say there was a little motion blur playing at 1080p, not enough to bother me, but would be understandable if it did to others. Anyways, I lowered it down to 720p, which pretty much took care of it and the game still looked just as good to me.Another feature I wish they added is a sensor for receiving remote controls signals. I fear that prolonged button pushing over time will wear out some of the buttons, causing those dreaded buttons don't work anymore dilemmas.Other than that, once I figured out how to get 3D to work properly, the screen was superb. Also, another positive aspect of this screen, I would say, is that 3D videos work regardless of what resolution or size the 3d video is. This screen doesn't require you to match the screen's resolution with that of the 3d video you are playing, nor do you have to play it in full size. I have the screen set to 1080 and I can play 3d videos in any size or resolution. I find these settings work best with this screen when playing 3d videos: For 3d stereoscopic side by side pictures, which are the majority of 3d videos, choose right-eye-to-left-eye, row- interleaved; you're going to have to play around with whatever software/pla

First off let me say I wanted the VG278H, but didn't want to shell out the $600 for it. That is why I ultimately bought this monitor. My last monitor of 5 years was a 22" Sceptre with decent specs in its time. Having said that, I am more than suitably impressed with this upgrade. The colors and resolution in games and movies, both 2D and 3D are simply stunning. I don't really have the words to tell you the difference between the two monitors. This panel blows away anything I've seen up close. Is it worth the money to buy it? Absolutely.1. The stand is completely awesome. It swivels, tilts and goes up and down with a mere touch on what feels like hydraulics. It is heavy and well balanced made of plastic and metal.2. The plastic edges of the monitor are not as thin as I would like, but aren't that thick. If you are going to buy a bunch of these to use in a multi-monitor setup you will not like the thickness, otherwise it is just fine.3. The screen is glossy, but using it in a sunlit room was still the most incredible monitor experience of my life. I kind of like it, and I think it works to make the dot pitch more palatable.4. The dot pitch is not good. I am not sure what Asus is thinking, and maybe I'm missing something here but a .311 dot pitch is really not that good. I was hoping to get a .27 pixel pitch, or so but I really liked the other features of this monitor. I am not all that disappointed. Yes, a smaller pixel pitch would make this a totally outstanding monitor but here again for the money, and for a 3D monitor with an average at best response time (5ms GtG) and for the stupefyingly incredible beauty of the colors this panel puts out you can give that up.5. Response time as stated above is 5ms grey to grey. That is kind of mediocre really. I was really shooting for 2 milliseconds or maybe 1, but 5? But you can justify giving that up for the gorgeous color and the 3D. I mean it is 5 milliseconds, right? 5 milliseconds is extremely fast for an IPS display and you can game with 8ms or under. You can game well with 5ms, it just isn't incredible like the colors. The colors you get when you buy an IPS panel, which this is.6. 250 cd/m2 brightness is right down the middle of average for a desktop monitor. Move along, nothing to see here. However if you must know, 250 is just fine for this panel, the colors are incredibly rich in bright daylight.7. I wanted to try out an IPS panel this time but I had no idea what that even was. It turns out it stands for In-Plane Switching and it is a type of panel that produces incredibly good colors and mediocre response times. It also lends itself to a type of technology for passive 3D. You aren't giving anything up by getting an IPS monitor - this is where all the benefits lie that you surrender other desires for. The technology in this panel might not last me until they come up with a life sized holo-screen, but it should see me through the next several years just fine.8. 3D is a gimmick. I don't care who you are or where you're from or if you use glasses that click and whir or little paper ones with green and red lenses, it's a gimmick. I kind of like it myself, and it is one of the reasons I bought this monitor. I pulled up a 2D game, World of Tanks, and put on the non clicky or whirring glasses that look a little bit like sunglasses and are not powered. I hit the "convert 2D to 3D" button on the monitor and it popped into 3D! Just like that. It was really cool, though the IPS panel itself is my favorite feature. But for 3D movies when you really want to see that Piranha jumping straight for your face it will do just fine. Is it the absolutely best 3D experience available? I don't care. This is easy and it works.9. The contrast ratio is 80,000,000:1, whatever that means. That is actually dynamic contrast and the actual contrast is unavailable at this time. I'm going to guess that it is average since Asus didn't list it on their website as a tweaky feature.Summary: It's hard to compare an IPS panel to a regular LCD panel - TN (twisted nematic) or VA (vertical alignment) because they don't work quite the same way and the numbers aren't quite comparable. I can tell you that you can spend $1K easily on an IPS monitor that has the fantastic specs gamers and movie affectionados are used to. You can buy a monitor with better brightness and response times for less money! But to get the mind-numbingly beautiful colors, excellent 3D capabilities, and specs that at least get you in the ballpark of the gaming monitors you are used to you just can't go wrong with this IPS monitor. Unless you just want to spend more money, then check out this monitor's rich and handsome big brother, the PB278Q. Here is the Amazon link if you'd like to ogle it, but unless you are made of money this monitor is quite good and with specs that for a IPS monitor are excellent. This monitor is definately big and bright compared to my Sceptre X20 that it is replacing. I have been using it now for a few weeks and I can say that I am now pretty impressed. If you are looking for a good 2D monitor with the additional of some entry level 3D, this is a good choice. At first I had some difficulty finding the sweet spot with my aging AMD 4XXX series video chipset. After my initial review, I was contacted by an Asus representative that was very helpful in finding the best settings, but in the end, it was a matter of updating my drivers, and ensuring that the display adapter was set to use overscan to properly fill the screen. Once this was done, the text was very sharp, and doing my daily drudgery with Microsoft Word suddenly become a pleasure. I am always impressed with the service and support from Amazon and their merchandise manufacturers. They came forth quickly to help. I know that they do this to ensure good reviews, but that means happy customers. Thanks to this, I AM a happy customer.I chose this monitor for office work and the occasion 3D movie. 3D movies look fantastic. After owning a passive 3D TV and now this passive 3D monitor, I am sure I will never by any displayed requiring bulky shutter glasses. The including glasses work great, and the movies look absolutely awesome.I am not an avid gamer, so the low 60Hz refresh rate is not a problem. I have read that the refresh rate can be improved using various software tools, but I do not feel the need. I have played a few regular 2D games, and so far they look great to me. Games in 3D often using the 3D conversion button look terrible. Yes, there's depth, but things are layered randomly and look wrong and weird. I have not found any games that run in a native 3D mode supported by this monitor without 3rd party software, so I will leave that to others to comment on. All I can say is they are not supported right out of the box. I tried a trail of Tridef but my aging AMD 4800 HD chipset couldn't handle it. You need a fast video card to handle it.This monitor has a 3D button that shifts into a 3D conversion mode. It is very impressive, but after the initial awe settled, I realized that this is indeed just a gimmick. Things do look like multilayered 3D, but in a really weird way. Imagine a photo of a tree and the moon, in 3D the moon might be closer to the foreground than the tree. Things are layered wrong. It is hard to describe, but it quickly begins looking very fake. The real power is using true 3D modes found in the monitors display settings menu, such as SBS (Side-by-Side) and watching movies or videos shot in SBS. Many examples can be found on Youtube, and work great. However, when in 3D mode, the windows desktop is pretty hard to read, so surfing online 3D videos is yucky. After owning the Asus VG27AH for a while, I can say that it was a real great value, a beautiful 2D display with amazingly bright lush colors. 3D movies look spectacular, but quality 3D gaming is just out of reach without 3rd party software. 3D technology is still emerging, but hey, it's only been out in mainstream since 1952. Give it a little more time.

Asus makes some solid products, but this set was substandard in too many areas for me. I bought this piece mostly for Bluray watching(it had to have built in speakers) as i game or surf on my main monitor and enjoy film and audio commentary tracks as i game. After now owning 4 different IPS panels to date, i feel for me personally IPS is simply overrated in it's current implementation, the viewing angles weren't much better than my current Sony Bravia with a MVA panel nor a Samsung with a TN panel. For what it's worth i have come to the conclusion that i simply cannot own a panel with a glossy/semi-glossy covering. It makes ZERO sense to me to fight glare in any lighting situation. Even in a dark room it bothers me.Full anti-glare for me or go home. Screw the fake contrast. Now, If you prefer Glass over your LCD panel, then disregard this review entirely because you and i are apples and oranges. This set had substandard uniformity of color and it's a b*tch to just get the picture setup correctly. For PC gaming, even with Trace set to 100 there was noticeable ghosting in Diablo 3 and Far Cry 3 for me via custom DVI to HDMI cable. Proper motion handling on this piece was lower than expected due to specs and price.I tried the 3d for about an hour on some select Blurays(Avatar, Jon Carter, Watchmen)and it was better than expected. But then i put the glasses back in the box and never used them again.I've never been a fan of Samsung monitors, but i strangely ended up going with the Samsung B350 Series T27B350ND 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor which i had written off due to calling Samsung directly and being told it sported a glossy screen(ignorant phone support)then later found out Costco carried the same model, so i went and had a look. The phone tech could not have been more wrong. The Sammy B350 had a dark and beautiful matte finish screen, NO gloss whatsoever, so i picked it up.I had many reservations about it being a TV for one(came with a great little backlit remote, decent tv speakers, and a built in tuner) and about input lag, along with it also having a TN panel.I have now had it a month and it's exceeded my expectations in all categories for Bluray viewing(through a PS3 via HDMI) gaming via Xbox and PS3, along with being my PC's 2nd monitor. The Asus had terrible PC text clarity, and the Samsung while displaying clearer txt, isn't much better in this area. But for console/PC Gaming, and Bluray watching, the Samsung is superior than this particular Asus model in every way.I'm a 43 year old ex-professional gamer, custom gaming PC builder, and picky old fart film aficionado. I'm sensitive about input lag and ghosting and i find no noticeable(non professional gaming) lag issues on the Samsung unlike the Asus.I'll end this here, if you have any technical questions i didn't answer, you can throw me one at Fodiddle@gmail.com.No spam or bull please. This review is my experience, and my opinion only.Good Luck!

After installing this monitor with DVI and HDMI I clicked the 3D button and put on the glasses. There was no change in the the view with or without the glasses. I could see horizontal lines about 3/8 inch long with 3/4 inch spacing between them and then a second set of lines overlaying the first set only offset by about 1/8 inch to the right. This is with naked eye, the glasses and the clip ons. I tried all the settings in many different combinations and nothing helped. I switched to HDMI input and got the same results.First step was to check the booklets that came in the box... waste of time. I had to go to the product page and dig to find the manual. I understand the cost savings by not including manuals if they are prominently displayed on the product page. Before deciding on exchanging/returning the monitor I went to the Asus site and sent in an support email asking if I had missed anything... what I got in return was instructions for a higher level monitor with active 3d and nvidia 3d capabilities. So not only did I get a defective product but the tech support didn't look at the model number or serial number that have their own input boxes on the form. I quit using Asus products almost a decade ago because of poor quality and lack of decent support but I figured I'd give them another shot.I have an exchange coming and hopefully I just got a bad monitor as I would like to consider more than just Samsung and Viewsonic going further for display needs. As for the 2D performance it looks great has plenty of settings in the menu and has no noticeable ghosting in the 2-3 games I have tried so far.New monitor should be here 3/29 so I shall update this if there is cause, good or bad.

Overall it is a great monitor. I can't knock this monitor in 2d mode at all. The screen is beautiful, however, it does reflect objects in the room. Which makes 3d viewing in the daytime or with lights on a bit distracting.I feel like I get a better 3d experience out of my TV's in any light. I'll try to explain. It is as if this monitor is a window to a 3d world. While the TV's actually bring objects out of the screen and into the room. This has great depth, and games are very sweet. Just not many things will pop out of the screen in my experience. But it is really deep. Really, really deep.Just remember as this is not a 120hz monitor that you will have to play games in 720p using the monitor for 3d conversion. Yet using a third party program like 1Z3d or TriDef this limitation is easily worked around. I do not regret my purchase of my Asus VG27AH 27-inch monitor. Would I choose a different one? Perhaps, if I could find a 120hz 3d monitor this size and near the price that I paid. One star removed because 3d is not as spectacular when compared to my other 3d devices.

This monitor is okay... For a 27 inch IPS monitor and for this price and 3D is included, its a great deal but there was a lot of back light bleeding from the monitor i received. The brightness has to be set to about 30 max for the back light bleeding to go away but even then, some is still visible just on the 4 corners. Particularly in the lower left. It could have something to do with the one monitor i received but I am going to return the monitor and get another one because the 3D is cool but not needed for me.For games, this back light bleeding is really annoying especially games like Metro where there are a lot of dark scenes. If the brightness is turned up, then there will be a lot of back light bleeding and if the brightness is turned down, then you cant see anything in the game... Everything else looks really good for the monitor but just wasn't expecting this much back light bleeding. Games like Far Cry 3 really look great in this monitor since Far Cry 3 has really vibrant colors.

First them all, sorry if my eng not so good: the monitor have excellent colors, (ASCR: 80.000.000, wow), love the 3D conversion key, and appearance in glasses, 5 ms response, it's ok for me, love the Video Preset Modes, and 2D is awesome(wish that the monitor have also Picture and Picture, like my old Asus VE278Q).But the problem is when suddenly i'm playing or watching video a white horizontal line appears in the bottom like a shot starting from the left to the right, and it's not constanly but is annoing and worrying. Second, light bleed, what i can say, bleed bleed bleed. Bleed Everywhere. And last, is 3D, i start watching 3D videos from youtube for at least 10 minutes and then wow, my world was upside down suddenly, it really cause me dizziness.

I received this Display a few days ago and upon installing to my PC, it just displayed a bright greyish white screen when I plugged it in with DVI... I thought this was very strange so I plugged via HDMI, but the same result. Then I thought would see if my Dell Laptop would work via the HDMI out it has, it would play audio through the display but it would not display anything.Pro/Cons:I will update this when I get my replacement today(01/04/13) from Amazon...If any issues should arise with the new one I will be swiftly returning it and will be looking elsewhere. Maybe they should stick to making Motherboards...UPDATE:I received the second one at the end of last week and found it work, but it bad issues with horizontal grey lines on the screen. Everything looked like the way Apple use to do their graphic design with the horizontal motion blue(Photoshop Effect) a few years ago.

I got this monitor today and it is fantastic! The 3d is extremely easy to use with the passive 3d glasses included. This monitor is a steal at the price. I had somewhat low expectations for this monitor when I first ordered it. Once I set it up today I was blown away with the quality. You simply can't go wrong with this monitor. I LOVE IT!!

Love this monitor. It's big, it's bright, it's beautiful! The stand is excellent. The 3D is....well it's a gimick but hey let's be honest you're probably not buying it for that and if you're going to be watching movies with it I'd say it's worth it. The only negative I can think of is that b/c the refresh rate is a little low it can hurt your eyes after extended periods of time, but it's not bad enough to take away a star.

Got it primary for screensize, not the 3d.As with active 3d, the simulated doesnt look as good as having something that was shot in 3dlike the classic imax docus or animated movies..Colors look great and u can save every profile with different settings for contrast etc.Only sharpness/color temp/3d depth in simulated mode and trace-free (aka anti ghosting) are set the same for all profiles..

great 2D picture! auto conversion from 2 d to 3 d is not that great. Text are also not clear when you do this. Turning my gforce nvidia to 3d shows great 3d pictures. now just need to get some 3d movies.
