so I finally got around to install it but was surprised when the tech had to bridge the rear left speaker's channel with the front left speaker's channel because the console was not sending signal to the front left, that was a huge NO. I would return it but I shipped the item abroad so its not worth shipping back.
surprises kept coming after the installation was ready: the iphone could not pair with the alpine, the galaxy SIII kept showing there was an error on something when pairing, the ipod did pair but for some weird reason even when i turn off the bluetooth option in the ipod the alpine can still give it orders hehehe weird.
the plastic case for the covert doesn't close.
the plastic control covert (where all the buttons are) doesn't come out easy and this is a big problem too because the plastic is so weak that it feels like it may break when you pull it out, and yes I am doing it the right way, but the release push rod is not releasing it all the way making the covert get stuck in a funny mid way.
so why two starts? the second stars is because it look good in the vehicle, it sure has lots of powers even when the right side of my car is now louder than the left due to the problem mentioned above, it is pretty easy to control, and because I'm sure that if I returned the item I would get a good one.

I bought this unit after extensive searching. My requirements were:
-handsfree calling with good microphone /sound quality
-excellent and rock-solid blue tooth support
-good sound
-Under $150
I've had it for about 6 months now.
Initial setup of bluetooth with my iphone 4 was AWFUL. I (as usual) was in a hurry and couldn't find the instructions, so I just mucked around in the UI. Eventually I got it to connect with my iphone. I was pleasantly surprised that the forwards/reverse/pause/play actually control my iphone which was awesome as I often listen to stitcher & pandora and when my 5 year old asks questions, I can pause it without digging through the iphone UI.
I started noticing a problem where 10% of the time when I started my car, it would not connect. This was with a 5.1.x IOS version. It worked great for several weeks, but then started having an issue. When I used the IOS interface to try and reconnect, it would spin and not connect. The only solution to this was to power down the unit and restart it. Since there seems to be no way to do this on the unit (no complete 'off' switch on the unit), it resulted in me turning off my car (often while driving) which would fix it. However, this is not the safest thing to do and I really didn't like it (but in many cases, i wasn't going to do a 1+hr trip without my preferred audio!).
After upgrading to IOS6.x the connection issue seems to have gotten a lot better (say 1/20 times), and when they happy, asking the phone to reconnect seems to resolve it) - but now the controls on the front face of the unit no longer seem to control the iphone, so I'm back to fumbling with the iphone everytime I want to skip forward and backwards.
Previous to this, I had a sony bluetooth unit with built-in micrphone. It didn't have the nice feature of allowing you to use the controls on the front of the unit, but it did connect every single time without fail.
Call quality on this unit is pretty good as well. I also use Waze and can get it so that I am listening to Stitcher with Waze prompting for turns etc at the same time - sweet.
Overall I'd give it 3 stars, because it's bluetooth support could be a bit more robust.
Pros:
Sounds great, nice control of the iphone via bluetooth, call quality is decent, not too expensive
Cons: bluetooth support could be improved.
2/23/2014: UPDATE!
About six months ago I switched to an ANDROID phone (Galaxy Note 3) and started having even more problems with it picking up bluetooth when I start up the car. I'd be swerving all around fiddling with the phone or the device while driving (dangerous). I eventually realized that if I shut off the car and turned it back on 75% of the time the problem would resolve itself. (Note that turning the power off on the device did not work, you have to kill the ignition). So, I have a happy and even more dangerous habit now of turning my car off on the road and quickly restarting it. This is, of course a ridiculous and terrible situation. I will be getting a new device soon.

Bought this stereo back in February and it worked wonderful until about a week ago when it went into protect mode and would not send any power to the speakers at all. I called Alpine technical support, as Amazon and the seller, Ultimate Electronics, were not helpful in the least in resolving the issue, and the manufacturer said they will not support any warranty on ANY of their products purchased on Amazon, but only their authorized web dealers, which consists of 3 companies across the globe. So avoid Alpine products on Amazon.....

I have had this system for a little over a year. Have had two phones with it (Android Bionic running Gingerbread and Android Razr Maxx running Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS). When it works right, I love it. It sounds beautiful and it is fairly easy to operate with little adjustment needed. Though I wish it would assume that the same device is connected on start-up and only go through the connection establishment process when it realizes the connection has been lost. That way it wouldn't take so long to get back to your streaming radio station (or whatever) when you stop for gas or to run into a store or just have to restart the engine.
Like MPick27 I have had connection issues where it wouldn't see my device with both phones, but it is far worse with ICS sometimes needing several reconnections before it will work. Even stranger, sometimes it will connect via BlueTooth to my music player but when I press the phone button on the CDE-133BT it will say "NO UNIT" on the display. However, if I initiate the call from my smart phone the call will correctly go through the audio system but then if I then try to initiate the next call from the CDE-133BT phone button it will still say "NO UNIT."
There is a deep menu selection to disconnect and then reconnect the phone. Sometimes this works though I have had the CDE-133BT completely lock up when I've tried this. When that happens, no buttons on the unit work. Because it is not reliable to reset this way I have gotten into the habit of shutting down the system by turning off the ignition and opening the door (I guess this is supposed to be a feature that it doesn't shut off 'til the door is open) which is a major PITA.
Like James, the microphone that came with my CDE-133BT does not do a good job, at least, that's what some people tell me and by assumption based on the number of times people ask me to repeat myself. When I have asked people what I sound like, they say I sound very far away or like I'm in a tunnel. I don't think it is the phone because it has been like that through both phones.
I have gone to Alpine's site searching for firmware upgrades and there do not seem to be any. The manual does not seem to show anyway to adjust the input volume for the microphone. I tried to call technical support today, but they are closed. If I get some satisfactory answers for how to fix the connection issues (like a firmware update) and for a microphone input volume adjustment method or microphone replacement/upgrade ability, I will update this review and change my three-star rating.

I never seen a car radio like this. It is fantastic.
But, I was just trying to update the firmware this morning. I downloaded the right file from their website. It messed up my CDE-133BT and it cannot turn on now. I spent the entire day looking for solutions. It looks like a lot of people are complaining about the same thing. Google it and you will see for yourself. There is nothing you can do with the device once the update fails. All I need to do now it throw it away or purchase a used one and use my radio front which is like-new.
If anyone got a solution I will be surprised.

Radio came packaged well and prompt delivery. I really like the radio, and have nothing bad to say. Just two observations.
The volume knob has a dual function, twist to adjust volume, press to go into find mode. I constantly hit the button by accident when trying to adjust the volume. I do drive a 4x4 truck, so it's partially because of the rough ride. I'm sure I'll get used to it, and develop the right touch.
Secondly, the button to switch radio bands is kind of small. I switch between AM and FM frequently. Most people probably don't. Again, I probably just need to get used to the button locations.
I really like the built in EQ that includes Treble, Mid-Range, Bass. Allowed me to adjust the sound really well.

I purchased and installed this unit myself. I've been using it over the past year mainly to connect via Bluetooth to my phone so I can play music during my commute. Installation was a breeze (as much as it can be with wiring and such!). Probably my only, only complaint about the unit is intermittently it'll have a difficult time detecting Bluetooth devices. When this happens I have to cycle through all the source options and re-connect the bluetooth.
Oh, one other issue-- you have to buy a separate microphone so you can take a phone call-- If you pick up a call while your phone is connected to the Bluetooth the caller will not be able to hear you! They should have included the mic, but instead you have to spend another $30+ bucks to get one. For me, I had to pull the unit out of my dash again to install the microphone when I realized I needed one.

I bought this to replace the older Sony player in my older Lotus that didn't have certain functions one absolutely needs in the modern world (the Sony that is...not the Lotus). These functions include Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
If you are a fan of stuff like internet radio, having your smart phone blast something like Radio Caroline right through the entertainment system is one of life's simple joys. That, and the ability to load just about all your music needs into 4gB of USB flash memory should truly light your happy rockets.
The radio comes with a microphone that you can mount someplace handy. When the phone rings, the radio stops pumping the Greatest Hits of Shelly Fabares and puts you into auto answer and hands free conversation mode. This works well even in my car with it's unbelievable din of background racket. In a more rational car, it would work even better.
So....no regrets. Of course, by the time you read this, the Alpine CDE133BT will be a "last generation" radio. This stuff changes quicker than a politician's promises.
You might get the impression I write this crap just for the fun of it. I do. But the comments about the Bluetooth and USB functions are still valid.

Bluetooth was easy to pair, several presets for EQ, as well as the usual advanced choices provided by Alpine. Really bulked out the Rockford Fosgate speakers in the car without needing to purchase and install an amp.

Overall I am happy with this head unit. I do have a few minor complaints however. First being the ipod control. After I installed it I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to switch the control to the ipod not the scrollview on the unit, which kind of sucks due to the single line text. After trying my girlfriends ipod i discovered the control mode only works on newer ipods. Second complaint is that it is missing a couple minor features listed on alpines website. Like the ability to change screen and button colors. Maybe I just have a slightly defunct unit, but either way its losing 1 star for these little things.
Everything else on the unit works great. It powers my s series speakers just fine, and has a good eq setup for it being a 3 band. Took a while to tune the parametric to my car but i love the way it sounds now.

CD player was defective right out of the box. Shouldn't this have been tested before it left the factory? Where's the quality control? Purchased a replacement locally and will be sending this one back for a refund. Alpine is not what it used to be.

Unit was working fine until the iphone ios6 update. After many months of putting up with substandard operation between the iphone and the CDE-133, I finally tried to apply the update. This update requires bluetooth to upgrade the bluetooth. Anyone see a problem here?
Wasn't filled with confidence when Alpine has a second upgrade procedure for when the first one doesn't work.
Something went wrong with the update and now bluetooth does not work at all!!
Help files and Faq's are very poor on Alpine's website. Consequently I am now have a unit that can't fulfill the function for which I bought it.
Stay away from this unit if you have an iPhone.

Great sound, simple design, and fine with calls. Bluetooth was a hassle -- though I can't say if it was simply defective or poorly integrated. Getting the unit to recognize my phone lists(recently called, missed calls, contacts, etc.) was a mystery that eventually resolved on its own. I had no problems accessing and playing my music library via BT. But it simply would not hold the connection when streaming internet content (e.g. Slacker or Google maps navigation commands). Instead, it paused my phone's application, searched for a device to connect to (sometimes not finding it), and paused its own feature. I'd then have to cycle through the sources (radio, usb, aux, etc.) at least once, then unpause the service on my phone, sometimes repeating these steps a few times before re-establishing the stream and getting the next selection/command to play. I could sometimes just skip to the next selection and it would keep playing without further interruption, but that was not what I expected bluetooth streaming to be about. It also would pause in the middle of a song, and on one occasion when paused the stream got caught in a weird loop that sounded like a strange humming noise. Again, I don't know if these issues were specific to the unit I purchased, but I wonder if they are typical of units that are not specifically built for internet streaming. I returned it and went with Alpine's 136bt, which specifies it is compatible with Pandora (internet radio app), and I've had none of the problems I'd had with the 133.

Got it installed and Bluetooth immediately synched up to my Nexus S running Android 4.1.1 I did experience intermittent connectivity issues via Bluetooth audio streaming, but after reading online, I was able to upgrade to the latest firmware provided by Alpine. Since doing so, my phone has connected flawlessly. Other than that, this unit functions as intended. It's a great unit for it's price range.

I gotta say I love this headunit it GREATLY improved my speakers and I am now able to add some subs. It gave my speakers some more power, which the stock unit couldn't push. Bluetooth works great, but my phone is crap so it does get a little laggy. But then again, it is my phone, and I have used other phones and they run without a problem. I have samsung gravity smart (very old).

Only semi-problem I had was today when I realized I had this receiver installed this year.So clueless to how to change the clock settings. Getting ready for the upcoming time change this weekend and no recall of how to change the time. Still waking up and not wanting to look for the manual. Found easily online the PDF manual, printing out only the clock instruction page. Suggest everyone at least have a copy in their glove compartment of the clock instructions! Very easy to change the time once you know what to do. Best feature for me is letting the receiver answer automatically incoming calls. I agree at times Bluetooth might not connect fast enough nor seem to want to pick up but to me it is rather easy to just look for my cell phone's name and connect like it never had a connection at all. Would recommend this, especially to my sister to whom she likes to at times do stuff other than actually just driving. love ya, sis

This stereo is great, very easy to use, and everything you need for a great price. Had some minor trouble with the Bluetooth straight out of the box, but was able to fix everything once I updated the stereo. The update can be a little tricky and you need to have a laptop with Bluetooth, but other than that it works great.

I like the fact that it's a simple single DIN radio that fits into the place of my old one, but has all the features of larger double DIN radios. Everything works well and I love the added advanced Bluetooth features that allow me to talk or play music for those times when I don't feel like plugging my iPhone into the cradle. Very, Very nice Alpine!

I just purchased this head unit and I love it. First of all the sound coming from my factory speakers is great, can't wait to upgrade the speakers, should sound spectacular then. I mainly purchased because of the iPhone control and bluetooth hands free calling. This unit gives the option of using the head unit to control the iPod or controlling from the iPod itself, I lie having the option. I used the head unit control for a few days but have switched to iPod control now. The head unit control is good, but being used to the iPod controls, I prefer using them. The unit also has the ability to pair to 3 different bluetooth devices, so my wife is able to pair her phone for hands free calling when driving my car. A front 3.5 mm aux input also allows for easy connection of other devices. Finally, the unit allows connection of a usb drive. I tried this and it worked great. Loaded several mp3 files on my usb drive and was able to work through the directories and listen to music.
The one thing I find a bit annoying is that it is sometimes slow to reconnect the iPhone over bluetooth after turning the car off. You need to let the bluetooth connect BEFORE connecting the iPod cable. If you do not do this, if you make or receive a phone call, when the call is over the head unit looks for audio over bluetooth instead of the iPod input. To correct you need to unplug the usb cable and plug it back in, a minor annoyance, but nonetheless annoying.
Overall, this is a great unit for the price, and the guys a Clackamas Car Toys were a pleasure to work with and as usual took care of me.

I installed this head unit in my truck a few weeks ago. It sounds great, but it has connectivity issues with my Motorola Razr Maxx. It will pair and connect, but after about fifteen seconds it pauses and will not reconnect. It did the same thing with my Samsung Charge phone, so it seems it's a problem with android phones in general. Based on Kenneth S's review I purchased an Alpine CDE-136BT. The 136 works perfectly. Same great sound and solid connectivity. Thanks Kenneth S!!!

bought this radio because i got an Iphone and it was working beautifully until the phones softwhear update. after the update half the features i bought the radio fort do not work. no help from apple, no help from alpine. would not recommend buying this product if you have a Iphone
