This is so hard to control!
We had an older Yamaha, from pre digital everything days. It had simple controls, there was an FM Mono switch! Presets were easy to see, choose and set. This one the controls are almost invisible, the lettering is tiny and no contrast, no lighting, so you have to turn on a light near it, squint, to find the right button.
It has multiple sound themes, it always picks some non useful cinema mode each time I turn on the radio, I now have learned I will always have to hit the "direct" button. Why doesn't it just stay on direct? So, we have a weak FM station we like to listen to. Every time I turn on the radio it is automatically in stereo (on the old rcvr, I left the switch in mono, fine). This one, the only way I have found to put it in mono, each time is to 1. find the remote, 2. choose options, 3. scroll through all the options to Stereo mode, chose Mono. This setting will not stick, I will have to go through all the same steps tomorrow for this station. On the good side, my phone will connect to it and play nicely through bluetooth, but every other function is a big chore. Am I missing something? Is there a way to set a backlit light to come on so I can see what the tiny buttons do? FWIW, the old Yamaha had a headphone jack and a switch that let you chose the source for the headphones, and it was independent of the main rcvr, so person A could listen in the room to music, while person B, through wireless headphones could listen to a totally different program. Now, there is no source switch for the headphones, fine, but also when you plug in the wireless headphones it automatically turns off the speakers, so now you can't use both at the same time, even for the same program. (if this doesn't make sense, sometimes I would roam to a different area with the wireless headphones). I could go on! I wish I could send this back for a more user friendly model.

Ignore complaints about audio drop-out
Bought this because of 4K pass-thru. As other have complained about, I experienced audio drop outs with older HDMI cables. Bought a pack of 4K certified HDMI cables and, whaddaya know? Drop outs disappeared. Ignore people who say that 4K cables aren't needed. Get the high-bandwidth cables. I'll add to this review the cables I ended up buying.
System was the least expensive 5.1 4K AV system and I've enjoyed my previous Yamaha AV receiver for quite a while. Go for it, I would recommend to my friends.

This receiver is obsolete. DO NOT BUY
This receiver is dysfunctional on arrival. It ships with obsolete firmware that is difficult, if not impossible, to update. Yamaha firmware updates can’t be accomplished by using an Apple product with iOS or a computer with Microsoft’s OS, using a flash/USB stick. I strongly advise NOT purchasing this OR any Yamaha product that doesn’t update wirelessly or one that you hope to use Bluetooth headphones. I have four Yamaha A/V receivers and ALL of them have significant limitations. This product is the worst. After working with Amazon support for two hours they gave up and confirmed this finding, approving a return. DO NOT BUY.

5 months into it and its dead- Turns off when any sound is turned up
5 months into it and its dead- Turns off when any sound is turned up. I have had over a dozen of the Yamaha recievers- most last about a decade. Bought this to replace one that was 8 years old that died. Im a network engineer by professoinal $150k per year- i know my stuff. This unit would power off all the time and when powered back on it would say check speaker wires. I unhooked all speakers and ran just one (with polarity ran correct). Damn thing did the same thing. Called Yamahaa and i was caller 105 on hold- waited 2 hours nothing. tired web support and nothing worked. Im contacting Amazon and sending this back. Junk. What happened to Yamaha? This use to be a 5 star company. Garbage

My 2nd YAMAHA A/V Home Theater Receiver
I Purchased This Receiver Because I've Owned a 2012 RX-V473 I Purchased in 2012 From Best Buy, It Lasted Me 7 Good Listening Years Before It Gave Up The Ghost. I Love The Sound Quality Of YAMAHA AVRs So I Had Know Doubt I Was Going To Purchased Another One When My Old One Died, I Chose This Model Because It Still Has a AUX Input In The Front Of the Receiver. I Don't Ever Use Bluetooth Audio Over An Actual "Physical" Connection Because I Believe You Give Up Sound Quality For The Convience Of Having a Wireless Connection. The Sound Quality For Listening To Movies Is Just As Important To Me As It Is For Music And This YAMAHA Doesn't Disappoint. I Put In HEAT (1995 Film) on Blu-Ray Disc To Test Out The Sound Quality - The Gunfight Scene Where Pacino and DeNiro Along With Val Kilmer Shooting At Each Other With M-16 Rifles Sounds Fantastic!!! Granted I Have a 12" Klipsch Sub, Polk Audio Towers and Center Channel Speakers, Fluance Rear Surrounds But This RX-V385 Really Delivers The Goods!!! Definitely Recommended and as Always, Thanks Amazon.com!!!

This product did not work from the get go. Immediately after installation, the sound blared as loudly as possible. The only way to stop it was to shut it down completely.
Initially this happened rarely, but as the weeks passed, it became more frequent. So, I tried to return/exchange it only to find that I was THREE DAYS beyond the one month exchange deadline. Neither amazon nor Yamaha was helpful at all. My best option was to send in the receiver to get refurbed..
The cost of shipping plus the long wait had been prohibitive. So I’m stuck with this hunk of junk.

It's entry level but it does it great.
For what it is, an entry level reciver it is great. Haven't had it long now, about a month but it has been great. Used to own onkyo, pioneer and Harmon Kardon recivers back before HDMI and blu ray. Have used a soundbar for the past few years but finally decided to jump back on a detecated surround system. For my apartment this sounds phenomenal. I don't normally mess with the DSPs so I can't comment on those, I prefer direct sound. Could it use more power? Probably but again this is entry level stuff. I use 12 gauge speaker wire on the front 3 speakers and 14 to the surrounds and it sounds great. Front speakers are 6 ohms and rears are 8 but no trouble driving them. Dialog is crystal clear and the overall sound is warm and pleasant. Playback of Blu ray and Ultra blu ray in both DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD is such a treat, absolutely made me realize how limited a soundbar was. Music playback is fantastic, have my laptop with Jriver hooked up through HDMI for playback of FLAC and WAV audio files from 44khz/16bit all the way up to 192khz/24bit with every genre of music. Put it in direct stereo mode and it sounds blissful. DSD playback does work but only at 2.8mhz DSD64 which is still great considering the price. 4K pass through works as it should, no troubles with HDR or Dolby Vision content. Can't comment on FM or am radio playback. Bluetooth playback is alright, music enhancer does a noticible job of cleaning the music a bit, nothing extreme but does add a cetain clarity. The Bluetooth could have been a more recent standard especially since this reciver came out in 2018 but again entry level. For my Echo it is fine for the rare occasion I send audio to it. Playback of music from LG V60 over Bluetooth sounds okay but wired connection still beats wireless as far as audio is concerned and if you just playing back mp3s AAC, it won't matter, it works. 4K upscale works fine, really didn't mess with it too much because TV is normally going to do a better job of upscalling anyway. Has auto HDCP detection which is nice, allows all HDMI connections to play nice. Binding posts with Banna plug compatibility is nice to see at this price. User interface is nice and simple. One area I can see trouble with is the fact you have to go online for the manual. Again, as a entry level reciver there isn't really much to complain about.

Nice but lacking line out jacks
I ran into a nightmare scenario with this unit. I use Sennheiser RS-120 headphones that require a line out connection. In my old system these headphones gave me the ability to listen to either headphones and speakers at the same time or headphones alone. Without a line out connection this setup wasn't possible.
What I have settled on as a workaround is to connect a line out converter to the rear speaker outputs and connect my RS-120 to the line out converter. This lets me use the front speakers and the headphones at the same time.
For headphones only I'm using plug-in headphones. I tried using bluetooth headphones but was never satisfied with either the sound quality or the poor synchronization.
If you have a similar situation I would go with a more expensive receiver and make sure that it has line-out jacks.
What I have settled on as a workaround is to connect a line out converter to the rear speaker outputs and connect my RS-120 to the line out converter. This lets me use the front speakers and the headphones at the same time.

First one was defective, giving #2 a try
I had great hopes for the RX-V385 but within a week of buying it, started having lip-synch issues, system settings related CPU lock ups, remote failures and other issues. Online forums indicated a tendency for CPU freeze and recommended firmware update (accomplished) and resets. All completed, none solved the problem. Due to its high ratings, I returned the first unit for a replacement. Just finished installing unit #2 - seems to be working well (for the first 6 hours). Reliability or quality control may not be the strong suit of this system but Amazon support was flawless. Will follow up in a few weeks if it keeps working properly.

Amazing quality and sound for an amazing price!
Always like Yamaha. My first amp as a kid was a Yamaha. It lasted for a very long time. I switched out for some really high end stuff in the 90's. It's 30 years later, and I'm going back because of the moderate price and for the quality. This amp is amazing. Smart set up technology on spacing, superb sound through Yamaha speakers. The ease of use and quick recognition of devices and other tech is impressive. Bluetooth connection is awesome. I play my music from my phone now with no cords! Ease of use is stellar. As an audiophile, I knew how to set it up anyway, but the manual walks you through the simple functionality in a very easy and precise way. If you just need 5.1 and don't care about 7.1 or higher, and you want simple quality and great sound, this is your amp. Highly recommend.

Off to a great start
I recently wanted to replace my aging (10 years!), entry-level stereo receiver and selected this one. I've been happy with other Yamaha products for my music studio, so the combination of brand and features got me to pull the trigger.
The product was easy to setup with my TV and speakers. The bonus feature was the room optimizing microphone, which calibrated the sound for my living room in less than 2 minutes. The sound was instantly clear and warm. I spent the evening testing it on music and video, and the result was gorgeous. The bluetooth connection from my iPhone was easy and clean.
My old setup had some issues with feedback, so it's something I am sensitive to and wanted to test out right away.
Immediately after calibrating, I settled the case against feedback (against my old receiver). After 24 hours, I could not have expected more from the purchase. Now, we'll see how it does on durability...

Dialogue came alive.
I bought this to replace a Yamaha RX V473.
It was similar but this one just sounds better while watching movies. The remote layout is much cleaner and sound setup was easy with YPAO. Music was good on the previous 473 and music and Theatre are great with RXV 385. I would recommend this reciever and believe it to be a great value as well.

2nd try worked
I'm sure all 5his would b great but the damn thing came broken it took me 4 hrs to figure out what was broken since the reciever and speakers were both new... after much trial and error I found out the further speaker ports like for the surround sound part noth the center or front ones.... DOES NOT I REPEAT DOES NOT WORK!! FRESH OUT THE BOX really let down I don't spoil myself often n this time I said sure I needed a replacement from the old one ... greatly let down I'll see Monday what they say about returning or getting a part

It was sent and in 2 days I got a new one to replace the broken one it works amazing I will come back in a week to give a final review

BANG For Your Buck
My very old Pioneer lost it's sub-woofer channel and I needed something to replace it that wouldn't break the bank. After some research I decided to invest in Yamaha's entry level RX-V385. This thing is amazing. Set up was super easy and the HDMI ports made it a snap to connect my x-box. It has Dolby® and DTS® surround sound decoding, Bluetooth connectivity and a ton of other features. a bunch of pre programed The coolest thing about this this is the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) mic. Once you get all your speakers set up you plug this little mic into the face port and it dials all the speakers in to the room relative to where you set the mic. So cool! I'm VERY happy with this tuner.

PROBLEMS
I BOUGHT THIS YAMAHA AS I HAD ONE FOR ABOUT 12 YEARS AND THAT ONE STARTED CUTTING IN AND OUT....WELL I HAVE HAD THIS ABOUT A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AND THIS STARTED CUTTING IN AND OUT...AFTER GOING ONLINE AND SEEING PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM I AM UPSET......I AM NOT HAVING A TECH COME IN AND AND GO THROUGH WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE DEALT WITH....CAN'T TRUST ANYTHING TODAY..DON'T BUY YAMAHA

Don’t blow your speakers
Just hooked it up to my current so round sound speaker system out new home cane with . My kids are like dad that’s awesome ! Sound great. Well built and easy least set up !! Comes with batteries for the remote witch is a plus since AAA are not a better I keep on hand . Great job Yamaha!!

Excellent quality
I bought this to hook up to my computer to in HDMI pass-through, and for that purpose it works very well. Additional features like Bluetooth were really just a plus. Unfortunately, I found the Bluetooth to be effectively unusable, as there is no way to pair it with my phone. So I'm knocking off one star for the bone-headed Bluetooth implementation. But in terms of sound quality and ease of setup, I'll give it 5 stars.
Pro's:
Great sound quality
Use of banana plugs dramatically simplifies speaker hookup.
Fairly simple user interface, although it could have been done a little better.
Con's:
Unusable Bluetooth.

Quality sound for the price, Easy & QUICK setup
The only issue was the subwoofer. This unit is NOT universal and locks the buyer into a Yamaha subwoofer because it only has one RCA port while most others have double RCA ports for subwoofers. The sound is good but greatly affected by the quality of speakers the buyer is using. The setup was quick and easy. Love having BlueTooth input into the Receiver so my iTunes music or Pandora or iHeart Radio can be run thru the system. Enjoying the 5.1 surround sound while watching movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime, my DVD or Blue Ray. The digital audio input works well tho I do need to move the volume level higher to get the sound I want out of the system.

Audio is great, but HDMI ports are flaky
I've had this unit for almost a year now. Bought it when I finally got a 4k HDR TV and needed a receiver with HDMI capabilities to match it. It's been working fine for all that time with my Xbox One X being really the only source on it. I recently decided to add a Roku Ultra as another source. I added that on HDMI2 and the problems started. Video blackouts while audio continued. Could watch TV on it for an entire night with no blackouts, other nights is would happen several times per hour. Started testing to determine where the problem was. First test was to plug another Roku in to see if that was the problem. Same issue with the other Roku. So I switched to Roku and Xbox inputs. Same result, although now the Xbox was experiencing similar issues. So I bought some new HDMI cables making sure that they were hi-speed, 4k HDR 60Hz capable. Still the same thing. Connected the Xbox and Roku to the TV, and sent the audio out to the receiver via optical. Finally, everything was fine. So it appears that the audio part of this receiver works great, but the HDMI ports are flaky at best. Decided to try one more thing. Checked online and discovered that there was a firmware update for this unit. Followed the instructions to install, which was successful, and rewired back to original setup to see whether that made any difference. It did not. If anything, the problems are more severe. I'm out of ideas. I'd switched to Yamaha because my last Onkyo receiver died after less than two years. Now I guess it's time to find another brand to try.

HDMI out is very weak
If your TV is right next to the AV receiver, it may not be an issue, but if you have a home theater setup with a projector, this is NOT for you. If the cable is longer than 10 feet, the HDMI out dies because it's not getting sufficient power.

Great Reciver
I have another Yamaha receiver that has been in use for 11 years without any problems, so when it came time to replace another receiver that was no longer performing, I chose this Yamaha to replace it, and I am certainly glad I did. Even my wife, who normally does not comment on such things, commented on how much better the sound was than on the receiver it replaced. This is a great value.

Отличный, доступный прибор с большим количеством функций
RX-V385 приходит у нас к использованию, чтобы наш старый усилитель Pioneer размягчить. Я хотел бы иметь AV-ресивера марки Ямаха, так как один Знакомый владел один и этот звук мне организаций, оптический, от переработки, а также обслуживание понравилось.
Must have для меня, что Bluetooth на борту. То же самое до сих пор работает с двумя сопряженными устройствами безупречно и без суки.
ввод в эксплуатацию не было никаких проблем и сделали быстро.
Что может тот или иной мешают, то, как уже неоднократно было написано, что высота устройства. Меня она не беспокоит.
Я могу рекомендовать Yamaha в полной мере и до сих пор бы купить его снова в любое время.
