i've scanned over 10k pages with this scanner. all fine. then i all of a sudden cannot scan anymore. it gives me a paper jam error. i've done everything i possibly can do. then i called amazon since i got the extended warranty and they referred me to xerox who hung up on me about 4 times and argued with me EVERY TIME about a "serial number" and refused to truly help me. i never got an answer and now own a 1300 dollar clunker, with a useless warranty. tomorrow i'm going to keep calling and try to get an answer because i didn't pay this much to have it tucker out this new. i'm very very very disappointed, mainly in the fact that the warranty from amazon means nothing and that xerox itself is totally unhelpful.

I agree with the other positive reviews: it works great, is fast, rarely jams, etc. And I guess I got used to these qualities, so I was really disappointed when it stopped working. Two or three times it stopped working and tech support got it working quickly, however, the most recently failure was more serious: tech support was not able to get it working and because it is just over one year old, the warranty is expired. So they want $150.00 to send me a refurbished unit, which is an OK price, but the problem is you have to send in the current unit and it takes them two weeks or so to send you the refurbished one. I can't go two weeks without a scanner. And I'm hesitant to accept a refurbished machine that has already been sent back. It didn't last long enough to justify the price ($900.00) so I'm going to try the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M which sells for half the price and has equally as good reviews.

I did a lot of research before buying this scanner and I have not been disappointed. The machine is very solid and the document scanner feeds almost flawlessly. It is very fast and the one touch buttons allow for one sided and two sided scans to .pdf at a touch of a button. You can scan letter and legal sized documents and each document can be run through the OCR to allow for normal Adobe search capabilities.I'm sure it would be a great work group scanner, but I highly recommend purchasing this as a personal scanner. I am a CPA and my office is now spotless since I purchased this scanner, ever loose piece of paper is now scanned in and large legal documents are now kept digitally instead of in paper.

First of all the positives about this scanner.1. It's fast. Very fast. Whether simplex or duplex.2. High quality scans.3. Easy to install.Now for the negatives:1. If the paper is not "fresh off the printer/copier" and in absolute PERFECT form, the ADF will jam EVERYTIME. Not only does it jam, it wads your original into a tight, crinkled up ball of paper.If the originals were stapled together...forget about it. You have to remove the staple, copy the first page, and then run it through this scanner.Although it is very fast (if you can get it to accept the originals), this is negated by the many trips to the copier to freshen up the first page.This is my biggest negative and the main reason for such a low rating.2. The ADF cannot auto-detect legal size documents. This makes it difficult to scan files that have a mixture of letter and legal.

Having owned the Documate 510 (which I have reviewed negatively) I was skeptical about purchasing another Xerox, however this scanner, which is about 4 times the price of the Documate 510 is 100 times better. Its flawless operation is just something to behold. 100 page ADF capacity, a super fast 35 ppm, and two sided scanning make this scanner an excellent choice for heavy duty scanning needs. Its 6500 page per day scanning duty cycle is proof positive that it is built for heavy use. Believe me, it can handle your extreme scanning needs. If you dont scan daily, and scan lots daily, then this scanner probably isnt worth the money, but if you do, and you are tired of the unreliable design and performance of your scanners, pick this one up, you will be glad you did.

I have had this up and running in my law office for almost a year, now. Replaced a Fujitsu scanner that consistently jammed and mis-fed. With the Xerox I have experienced exactly two misfeeds out of thousands of scans, one because I neglected to remove a staple and the other because I failed to adjust the paper guides to the smaller paper being scanned. The supplied software permits scanning to PDF and virtually flawless OCR and is user-friendly to operate. And it is zippy! Load the originals in, the machine immediately grabs the first page and cycles it into position. Once the light is warmed up, a process that takes about 20 seconds, the pages verily fly through, scanning the front or both the front and back. If multiple docs are being scanned one after another, there is no lag time on after the light is warmed up for the first batch. The feeder accomodates some 25 pages, depending on how heavy the sheets are. Instead of scanning to file, it can be set to scan to the printer, effectively turning it into a desktop copy machine. Mine even came with a replacement sheet feeder bearing; this is evidently a wear item provided so that when the machine begins to mis-feed this part can be replaced by the user to solve the problem. The installation and use literature came in a booklet and was not written by someone whose English is a second language. This thing is expensive, but in my opinion its worth it if you want a commercially mature machine.

The scanner works spectacularly; if you know how to foul/fool the end paper sensor. After spending 2 hours looking at all of the moving parts (there's only 5 or so of them) If you crazy glue a staple to prevent the bottommost switch so that it can't return all the way to the top of the support, thus triggering "paper jam," you can fool the device in to thinking that there cannot be a paper jam,even if there is one :-)

What a great product. I searched, researched and found the answer I was looking for - a compact product that I could put lots of paper into and quickly scan into various formats and then file or send back out as email, fax or post to internet (FTP). I also didn't have to have a Phd in computer science to do it. It is plug and play and very intuitive. I have gone from 16 file cabinets to none and drawers full of deal folders to everything on my computer. Life is good!

The Xerox DocuMate 252 scanner proved to be the perfect item for our busy medical practice. Documents can be scanned into the patient record amazingly quickly. 15 sheets are commonly loaded into the unit and scanned fast without having to babysit the unit to insure proper transfer.The software provided works very well and allows you to save the document in all file formats with excellent OCR software.It's small size made me initially leery but it is a workhorse.I recommend this scanner highly.

I have been using the DocuMate for two months, but it was in use for some time before I arrived at my company. I like the machine a lot and have considered calling my co-workers at my former place of business to recommend it.Last week, the machine started jamming and was feeding documents in crooked. I later saw what I believed to be a strip of paper dangling out of the output tray and yanked it out. It was a long white strip of tape. After its removal, image quality dropped to the point of uselessness. I decided to try using Bic White Out Correction tape over the space where the adhesive strip had previously been and the image quality returned.I have called Xerox to reorder this missing "part" and have been told that there is no replacement part because the machine is assembled overseas. Can you imagine that a $700 machine can be disabled over a three cent strip of tape? I will continue using the machine and reapply the white out if it removes itself with use. OfficeMax sells the starter package for $2.29 and two-pak replacement tapes for $3.99.Four stars for product use, 1 star for Xerox product support.

When I purchased this scanner the provider was out of stock of the simplex model so we settled on a deal for the duplex version. It is providing me with excellent service and I have no complaints. I particularly recommend the duplex version which scans both sides of the document in a single pass as the pages zip through one after the other.

Our office uses the Documate to scan patient's charts, explanations of benefits & other misc. paper communications. We successfully scan over 800 pcs daily w/out any problems.The Documate is fast, reliable and priced @ a good value.

The scanner exceeded my expectations and support is fantastic.I am using the scanner in an insurance office. The scanner can be set up to scan to multiple locations (employee's files) with the selection of 9 customizable presets and simply pressing simplex or duplex. Very fast. Really does scan about 25 pages per minute at 200 dpi (8 1/2 x 11) and 50 pages in duplex mode. Easy to set up. If you purchase it download the update to the Omni Page scanning software. This will enable you to scan to different locations as i specified.I owned many other Visioneer scanners at home and at the office. They have always held up well.

Having just read the other reviews, one of which complained about paper jams, I want to affirm that this really is a remarkable scanner, faster and more efficient by far than any other I've owned. Like the other reviewer who was satisfied with its performance, I would honestly say that it has changed my life too, making me much readier to contemplate converting vast heaps of paper files into digital format. Sure, jamming occurs occasionally, but how could it not? The reviewer who was critical of this aspect of the device isn't being realistic about the challenge of fast sheet feeding. I would say the autofeed function works 95% of the time, and at an astonishingly quick rate. Highly recommended.

Bought this for a research project. Broke down after scanning just under 4,000 pages (it's supposed to scan 2,500 per day). No longer under warranty (2 mos. past), so Xerox refused to send another one. Xerox does not service it's own products or sell replacement parts. I've talked to a number of repair centers who say the documate is junk. So stay away from this product.

I tried to use this scanner in a archiving records application. When it works, it great. The problem is if the paper jams, then you have to turn off the scanner to clear the jam and you lose you whole scanning job! To make it worse, it's concept of paperjams is a page that is wrinkled or has been folded in the past. This just doesn't work when you are scanning old files to digitize them.Nice try but the flaw makes it a no for use in the real world of document archiving.I asked Xerox and they said this same problem exists in the 262 also.

This product fairly reeks of the "rush to release" syndrome. The instruction manual comes with several separate "Errata" sheets attached, correcting misinformation inadvertently printed in the manual. If you use this scanner, you can't have any drivers for any other Visioneer scanners on your computer, which is frankly ridiculous -- for a scanner that costs $1000, you'd think the software engineers could devise a driver that doesn't cause such problems, especially since many people own more than one scanner. What's worse, they're not kidding -- I uninstalled the Documate driver and returned the scanner for a refund, but I still can't get my other scanners to work, because the Documate software screwed them up. This scanner is way too much trouble for the money. I wish I'd never heard of it.Update -- 4/2005 -- if you're looking for a duplex scanner, you're better off with the Fujitsu FI-4120C2. I found it, and it's excellent.

I have to scan medical documents, sometimes 4 or 5 at a time, to .pdf. Interfacing with Acrobat 6 was a problem at first, but Acrobat 6 Prof and Standard have an update, 6.0.2, and after that, I had no problems. This machine is FAST. Zip, zip, zip! Done! The software interface is simple and unobtrusive. I use a program, MacroExpress, to facilitate the process,and this is the only software I've used (two others so far) that adapts almost pefectly. The warmup time was a problem for me in the past. I dictate reports, then attach other documents to the finished products. If one inserts the sone-to-be scanned documents in the scanner as one is nearing completion, it warms up, and by the time I'm ready to scan, it's over in a matter of seconds. I spent a significant amount of time searching for the best if not perfect scanner. This is it.The product support was friendly and good, and I didn't have to wait too long to talk with someone when I was having trouble with the Acrobat 6 interface. Coming from a flatbed scanner without auto document feeding, I feel like the ape in the beginning of 2001 Space Oddessy, my leg bone just morphed into a space station.

For the past several years I have used Epson flatbed scanners for both personal and business use. My Epson scanners provided a very good scan quality, and at a decent scan speed. The Epson software interface was ok, but not the greatest. Last week I decided to take a chance on this Xerox Documate 250, and I'm really glad I did. This thing rocks! I am amazed at how fast it scans stuff. And the scan quality is great. The software that comes with the scanner is really good, too. Much more user-friendly than the Epson software. Another neat feature is that this scanner will scan directly to PDF format. So no more cumbersome file conversion from JPEG's, BMP's, etc. I am seriously considering buying another Xerox Documate 250 (or another Xerox Documate model) for home and/or business use. I'm that impressed. I don't write many product reviews, so that should tell you something about this product.
