I was inpressed by the speed and capacity, and it worked very well for 3 years. Turned it on at 6 or 7 AM and off at 9 or 10 PM for 3 years and 3 months in a stripe pair. Now it is getting reread flags so I tried to re task it but it crawls on restore and fails. So seperate low priority work drives it is. I have replaced it with a pair of Crucial SSD's speed and reliability restored. Lesson? don'd go skimping if you really want the best. Sorry WD but you don't make the reliability cut.

Firstly, I would never consider getting anything but the Raptor hard drive for any new computer I was going to be serious about(as in gaming and main rig) I usually prefer to pair it up and go "RAID 0" as it is a pretty solid drive and doesn't take damage so performance can be gained and you need not sacrifice it for "RAID 1" these things do not fail!(with proper front cooling). RAID 0/0 is good for picky games but also a distructive power to your pocket book I've not seen since owr booming days in 1999 economy! lol for it's capacity you can pair it up for good OS performence as that needs some serious acess and lots of time in the "dental chair" too(as in noise) get some other higher capacity HD of some quality and durablity like the WD SATA 2 1.5 TB with a decent cache to load all those huge games on run the acess and buffers off the Raptor(as it is loaded in your Docs for that purpose) same with movies. The price is killer in this config however so consider a single High performanc video card in place of PCIE x2/3! A "Falon NW" with this config and a cheaper(though decently not low end) vid/sound will run you on the high side of 3K+ maybe closer to 4K! self builds are cheaper but risky too. This is not cheap if you are into games(the new ones) they are performance hogs as is the OS required. If you are a "Data DaintY" or a casual user(as in storing info) this is also the way to go as it is durable and the acess time is always true! My mother would think it frivolous but if she had it "sneak loaded" on her PC(for Christmas) I think even she would find it a boon in her otherwise waistful load times of Windows and her files that always get dumped out because her old crud of a Hewlet Packard has such a droll HD that fails periodically requiring a reinstall by her "tech support" people. IF you are not a serious user consider a single raptor but also you must retain your slow moving but higher capacity HD(likely a Sata 2 by now!) IF you store critical data this is the way to go even if you don't use RAID 1 but if you do it is better still than the standard ones! aside the low capacity this is the SCSI of HD without being a Scuzz to your wallet/credit comprimise!

Why bother with configuring a SCSI or two drive in raid 0 when this is just as fast and it plug in play. I would use this drive on the OS and program install only and a 2 terabyte for saving content like video pics and docs. \As far as vs a Solid state drive yes the solid state book faster but who cares the important part is real world use like audio and video conversion real world transfer rates ect... and for that this drive is still faster than Solid state drives i feel solid state still needs improvements but are good for laptops as they boot faster, resume faster and use less energy and don't heat up as much.I had problems with earlier models that would make my system run hot from all the heat but this one has a nice dissipator the improves that drastically. I also had the problem that they where super noise but this model is extremely quiet. I must buy till the larger version of this drive comes out.

EXPENSIVE AND PRONE TO FAILURE. Known firmware problems result in drive failure in 49.7 days of usage. WD recommends a cold power down of the computers containing the drive every 30 to 45 days. The issue results from problems in the TLER and FIS firmware programing. The error occurs when someone is reading or writing to on the 49.7th day of operation. The result is all drives fail simultaneously during a data read or write resulting in total RAID failure and data corruption.Know bad VelociRaptor drives:WD3000BLFS-01YBU0WD1500BLFS-01YBU0WD740BLFS-01YBU0WD3000HLFS-01G6U0WD1500HLFS-01G6U0WD740HLFS-01G6U0WD has been very slow to replace these drives probably due to the overwhelming number of failures. We were back ordered on RMAs for weeks with downed servers. WD has been poor to recall known defective WD3000 drives and replace them. Also WD has not alerted Systems Integrators and VARs to the problem.

There is no other speed improvement investment you can make on your computer that will have a more significant effect on speed than a fast hard drive. Faster video card? Nope. More memory? Nope. Faster CPU? Nope. I have done them all.For home use, us hacks are forced to use mainstream parts because of costs. SCSI is the fastest alternative to SATA and EIDE drives. But, an Adaptec SCSI card costs about $300+ and the hard drive can cost $300 to $500 depending on size. SCSI hard drives for that reason are always smaller in capacity and most are under 100GB. I'm in engineering and my work computers have always been SCSI. But, you can make any dog computer rock by upgrading to SCSI if you have a big wallet. This WD Velociraptor hard drive is the in between choice. It is not as fast as SCSI but close, and it is much faster than the standard hard drives. Compared to the 120GB SATA hard drive I replaced, I can notice a huge improvement for programs to load. If I had to guess I would say the speed is about double or a little more. Based on the specs for a 12msec standard hard drive, these are in the 5 to 6 msec range. Not bad for a $200 300GB hard drive. Some have complained about the cost per GB being high, but if you look at the cost per GB per second of the Velociraptor, it is the cheapest available on the planet. And remember, speed upgrades are not linear relative to costs. To get this close to SCSI speeds for this size hard drive I could spend $1000 in the SCSI world. I am impressed with this hard drive. For those out there who might be hesitant because of the difficulty factor on how to transfer your current data onto the new hard drive, WD has created software which will do this whole change process for you with about 3 clicks of the mouse. The software called Data Lifeguard Tools comes on a CD with every retail version. This version sold here is the OEM version and has no software. But, you can download the tools for free from the WD website. All I had to do was add the new hard drive to my system and the software recognized it even though it was not partitioned or formated. It asked if you want to transfer everything from your boot drive to the new drive and that was it. After it finishes which takes several hours, you shutdown and take the old one out and you're done. Very easy process.

First off, this is not listed as an OEM product, but it is in fact OEM. That means that it does not come with any supporting documentation, SATA cables, power cables, or retail packaging. Its very frustrating that Amazon has neglected to list this as "OEM." I don't have a problem buying OEM, I do it all the time as I've got a large supply of left over computer parts and always have things like SATA cables lying around. However, for the 'average joe,' expecting a retail package, the way this item is listed could be very misleading. Usually OEM parts are listed that way in their title. This one isn't.Evaluating a hard drive is fairly easy; does it do what it is supposed to do? Is it reliable? In this case, the answer is yes, and maybe. The drive works fine, is lightning fast, and performs as expected. My Vista boot time dropped about 20 seconds when booting from this drive, which is pretty impressive. However, when cloning my current Seagate 500gb drive to this one, I found very many bad sectors on the drive. I've uploaded a photo to support this. There were so many that I was ultimately forced to do a 'ignore all' just to get the cloning finished. That many bad sectors on a brand new drive is really annoying and simply not acceptable. I'll be returning the drive for a replacement, and will update this review once it's been received. In concussion, this is a fast drive. It is OEM and not listed as such. I experienced a whole lot of bad sectors when cloning from my old drive. I have no choice but to leave this a drive a pretty poor review. Your mileage may vary, and if you get one of these with no bad sectors, you will likely love this drive.

First, there seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding this drive. Regarding the position of the SATA connectors; this is a 2.5" form factor drive in a 3.5" aluminum cooling bezel for convenient use in most desktop computers. Look at the product picture and you can see this. If you need to use a drive in a docking situation where location matters, don't buy this drive. This is the OEM version of the drive. The retail box version sells at significantly higher price. This means a warehouse worker will re-package the drive from a bulk shipping container into an anti-static bag. Mistakes can happen and it's also not really the proper way to ship hard drives, so if you want the retail box version pay the extra $50 and get it. If you roll the dice and take a chance to save the $50 then suck it up if you have to return a DOA drive once in a while. This drive is fast and performance costs money. It is also very energy efficient and quiet when compared to the fastest 3.5" drives. I have owned every one of the WD Raptor series starting with the original 35GB and most recently the 150GB and every one of them carried a stiff price premium. All have served well in my high utilization business environment. This latest revision is the best of the bunch by a significant margin. The combination of access time, transfer rate, (finally) NCQ, and low heat and noise dissipation make this drive a very reasonable bargain for those that actually need it. It's not designed to win the $/GB prize. Write times actually beat Intel's X-25 SSD (solid state drive). If you need the performance, this is the drive.

I'm a loyal Western Digital fan. So when my C:\ drive started making noises and locking up windows (an old WD 320GB Caviar) it was time to upgrade.First off, this drive is incredibly fast. It fits in the 3.5inch bay on my Dell Inspiron 530 perfectly. Booting up windows (didn't time it) was noticeably faster. Usually when I log into windows I have to wait 1-2 minutes for everything to load. Now, with the VelociRaptor I can open programs instantly after logging into Windows. Now for some official numbers: Malwarebytes quick scan. On my old 7200RPM 320GB - a scan would take 3.1 minutes. With the Velociraptor the scan takes one minute and 56 seconds. As far as noise - it seems a tad bit louder than my 320GB Caviar when seeking for data but not noticeably louder when idling. However the noise is not noticeable when the computer is under the desk as mine is.I didn't think that going from 7200RPM to 10,000RPM would be that much of an upgrade but it is amazing how much faster everything is. Windows boots faster, Windows logs in 2x as fast, programs open up faster, World of Warcraft loads a ton faster, and backups in Acronis are 2x as fast.Definitely recommend this drive! Beware it is OEM so you need your own SATA cables and screws. I was replacing a drive so that was ok. I also bought this from Amazon (at the time Amazon was selling) - not a third party.

This is certainly one of the fastest drives available to consumers. Look at the specs, SATA II 3Gbps, 4.2 ms read seek time, 300GB 2.5" 10,000 RPM drive in a 3.5" casing on 4 heads and 2 platters. This is also faster than previous Raptors which were only 1.5Gbps products. The old Raptors had 4.6ms read seek times and 5.2ms write seek times versus 4.2ms rst and 4.7ms wst. Although this is not the fastest drive available (That title belongs to the Intel X25-E SSDs and the X25-M drives), it is the best value among the performance leaders. I had the opportunity to purchase the Intel X25-M 80GB drive in an EPP for $399 (MSRP is $600+)! This 300GB drive costs less than $200 after rebate. While Intel's SSDs are faster at most applications, the Velociraptor is competitive. For instance, Spore load times on the Intel X25-M were 16 seconds while the VRaptor was 17. Oblivion was 37.9 seconds for Intel and 46.7 for WD VR. Crysis GPU bench was 48.2 FPS avg for Intel and 46.8 avg FPS for the WD VR. Other benchmarks were similar but the VR beat Intel on a few of the benchmarks like multitasking and Sysmark video creation. If you have to get the fastest drives, go with Intel SSDs or SCSI 15,000 RPM drives, but you will pay a lot more for a little bit of extra performance in most cases. I'll stick with the Velociraptor until SSD prices are comparable.

I can't say allot on HDD, its fast and doing the job.Take in consideration these important factors:1- it's not exactly 3.5" HDD size, it's non standard HDD size almost 2.5" however it's thicker fitted in heat sink to make it almost 3.5", however it's slightly bigger and can be a problem in installing it, depends on your PC case. I had to do some serious modifications to fit it in my HTPC2- packaging is extremely bad, no cables, no connectors, no catalogues. Just a nylon cover, I wonder why they have invested in this cover?Price: overpriced, do not expect 10x difference speed, speed difference comparing to the price difference it are extremely high.Unless you are in audio / video processing this is not your baby, it's just waste of money. For gaming and video playing, it perform exactly the same as my 1TB 7200 RPM 32mb, price of the 1tb is US$120Windows Vista booting is improved for few seconds.

Downside - It took 6 drives to get 4 that worked. I haven't checked for any bad sectors yet but expect to find some.Upside - They are lightning fast, much quieter and cooler when compared to the previous 150/160 GB versions. The 150/160GB versions sounded like a machine gun during heavy duty operation and ran hot. Mine are set up in 2 2 disk Raid 0 arrays, one array for the OS and Apps, the other for data. 5 year warranty will cover any hardware failure. I had a 150GB drive fail. WD replaced it without a problem.Recommendation(s) - If you need the speed (flight simulation, video editing, etc.), do it. I use nightly automatic backup anyway because of the Raid 0 configuration. Given the reliability issues I would back up nightly in any configuration, including Raid 5. Turn off prefetch/Superfetch and indexing unless you really need it. Make sure you have adequate cooling. Keep an eye on the SMART info that is available through Speedfan or similar hardware monitoring programs. I received plenty of warning my 150 GB was failing. I'd be amazed if you don't see a significant difference in heavy duty data access applications.

The Western Digital 10KRPM Velociraptor hard drive series is the fastest non-solid state drives out there. There are no funky drivers or software or connectors or cables or anything: the drive plugged in just like a standard SATA drive, bolted to my PC's chassis just like any hard drive, and was whizzing away at 10,000 revolutions per minute as soon as I hit the power switch.I wish I had benchmarked my system before and after to compare the true impact of the drive: I do notice an improvement while playing games and working in MS Office, but the change isn't Earth-shattering.The fact that Amazon sells the OEM version but advertises it without letting on is a little devious - luckily the price difference between Amazon and the other guys makes it worth it: just be sure you have the SATA cables and mounting hardware before you buy! And don't expect a manual or CD of software or, well, anything other than an awesome harddrive and plastic packaging.

I have too many HD's. Their sizes are getting bigger and bigger, quieter and quieter but similar price and same speed. SO this is what I have been looking for, >=300GB, significantly faster than what I have, but not too expensive, for my daily usage.I did hesitate because bad sectors and crash issues reported. But at this price plus $30 rebate, it is also very tempting. Here is my feedback.1. Its OEM package but very secure.2. It was formatted regularly(not quick format) in my PC for initial testing. No problem.(1 hr)3. Ran WD data lifeguard extended test for 3 times. No problem reported(40 mins for each test)4. Cloned my old hd to it and ran 3dDMARK for a few times. No problem.5. Ran some games. No problem.I think WD may found and fix the reliability problem. But they have to reduce the price low enough to make it up. I will post more, should it fail on me. Good luck.

I purchased a case of 40 of these drives for 20 servers (RAID 1) in my datacenter. I had 6 fail within the first 3 months of operation. The drives are great when they work. Do not expect any technical support at all from WD as they will not support these drives in RAID configurations. They do RMA drives quickly, although I received the wrong drive twice in return. It took about a month each to get those drives replaced. I would highly not recommend this drive for any type of mission critical business operation, even if you are running these drives in a RAID 1 array.

I was eager because spending as much money, or more, for a 32GB SSD drive is dumb. (And people complain about the Velociraptor being pricey!) And I like performance; every review I read said this thing flies like a budgie on amphetamines. And, yes, it runs relentlessly fast. STABLE too. Vista loads in half the time and EVERYTHING is far more responsive.I was hesitant because others reported the unit dying after x number of days. On my system, the drive was instantly found, cloning software worked without a hitch, and a full chkdsk scan revealed 0 sector failures. Time will tell and I might post a follow-up review. Others have mentioned bad sectors or the drive dying after x number of days/weeks. Mine was manufactured on June 8 2008, if that date helps anybody.I was also eager to spend, because I don't want to go through the hassle of making a RAID 0 array; knowing if one drive fails I lose the whole array. Most reviews show this drive, on average, on par with RAID 0 if not better. Rather less time consuming to put in too...Also, why only 16MB of cache for this puppy? I can think of reasons for and against keeping only 16MB, so I won't complain too much... :)

The infamous VelociRaptor - wow...what a drive. It is fast...it works as advertised.Very easy to install.... I will give updates to this review in the future to update you on status, speed, use, etc.UPDATE:Dont buy this for a MAC Pro - the heatsink makes it impossible to add to a mac. You have to buy an adapter kit and it destroys the warranty... The adapter kit is sold at some website.....they charge $48 for one adapter which includes a make shift heatsink. THE DRIVE IS GREAT...but not for a mac pro.UPDATE 01/26/09I purchased this for my MAC Pro and bought the extra adapter...thereby voiding my warranty etc.. However, for me it was a great decision. This makes my mac pro SCREAM....it is a super product with great speed. Seek times have improved by as much as 20% and my boot times have gone from about 2 minutes (total from power on to ready state) to about 55 seconds. Now I know that we can all wait 2 minutes for boot up..but when you get a drive like this and the immediate changes are apparent...you know that everything you do on your pc/mac will be faster.Great Drive.

When I received the Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10,000 RPM SATA Bulk/OEM Hard Drive WD3000GLFS, it was double boxed; a smaller box in a larger box. The hard drive itself was secured very well in the smaller box, in molded plastic. But the smaller box was just placed in a larger box with no additional packing which allowed the inner box, with the hard drive, to just jostle about during shipping & handling. Knowing a little bit about how hard drives are built, I sure hope the poor packaging does affect it's performance in the future. Right now the hard drive is working flawlessly...so far.

I just upgraded from the older 150GB 3.5" version of the Raptor. It seems noticeably faster. Not only is it faster, but the capacity is double and it runs quieter and cooler. The only reason I am giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the premium price. I think it is a little "too premium". Would be 5 stars if this drive was $200. Even at $200, it would be much more expensive on a per gigabyte basis than a typical 7200 RPM drive. Because of what I think is an excessive price premium I can only give it 4 stars.Example: 1TB for $150 (which you can get now) is 15 cents per GB. This drive is 97 cents per GB. That's 547% MORE per GB. That's quite a hefty premium so make sure it's worth it for you. If you paid that much for a 1TB drive (at 97 cents/GB), then it would cost about $970 instead of $150!

I finally made the plunge into 10000rpm drives, when WD offered a decent memory size. The hard drive runs quiet and stays pretty cool.I use this for my operating system and to game. Stick with 7200rpm drives for storage...at least until the price/gb drops on 10000rpm drives.
