Excellent value for its seemingly high price.
This ssd from western digital is awesome! It doesn’t have the same issues with heating up like it’s cousin the passport pro hdd and has a faster boot up sequence to “boot” (LOL). While it is not a true NAS you could consider it a scaled down portable version of a true NAS. Because it has its own WiFi ssid you can take it anywhere, to the beach, camping, road trips because you can bring all your media with you! With an sd card slot and a USB port you can back up your pictures and videos from your camera or phone. The only negative I see here is the price. Starting at 200$ for the 250Gb model and increasing exponentially with the 500Gb, 1Tb and 2Tb models this is something you’re going to have to save up for. Did I mention the Plex media server? Yeah it’s got one making it a no brainer when it comes to choosing a wireless storage device.

Does fast transfers of SD card to SSD. Feels clunky. I'd love a revised version.
I bought this because I wanted a way to download footage from SD to SSD quickly. The built-in SD slot is fast (usb3 speeds). The USB port is USB2. Usability feels more 2015 than 2020. I'd love to see a revised version with an OLED screen or something. Literally all I want to do consolidate footage from multiple SD cards to an SSD, quickly. This product does exactly what I need, but feels dated. ~10 min to download 50-60 GB of GoPro footage from SanDisk U3 gold Micro SD card. Was able to fill up the 500gb drive with SD card downloads on one battery charge, with plenty of charge to spare.

Setup Process (WIFI)
I was about to post a relatively low rating for this product concerning its WIFI features which I was not able to set up after struggling for 2 days. Be sure to shut off any VPN or "Safe Browsing" feature you might have on you mobile phone before configuring the app. Obviously, devices will not be able to connect to your WIFI Network if you use a VPN to keep unauthorized devices out !!!
PS I used LookOut security app. Simply go to settings in the app and shut off "safe browsing" to use the device. When through, turn it back on again if you want.

It is unstable. The connection drops
I had to return it because it could not make a stable connection to my camera. I set up the FTP function on my Canon 5d Mark IV and when it did connect, it worked great. Without explanation, the lights would start blinking and the connection would drop and the unit would freeze. It was unstable and I sent it back.
It's too bad because if it worked as the features were represented, it would have been a valuable way to push photos out for sharing.

Complicated network setup
I'm sure this works fine in wireless mode, and, although the manual is well illustrated & organized, I didn't have the time/patience to go thru all the network setup details so I gave up during the complicated network setup + I don't need to share files across multiple devices nor plug it into my wireless home network & worry about security issues/passwords, etc., I just need a simple mechanism to transfer files to/from the SSD to my laptop (after the SD card is plugged into the SSD), so I'm just going to use the direct USB cable connection from the SSD to my laptop - that works fine.

No go for Windows 10
I wanted to like this but it won’t work wirelessly with Windows 10, a known security issue which WD could fix if they chose to. Also, I couldn’t turn Wi-Fi off which is a waste of battery when all I want to do is copy SD card data over. An SSD with an automatic card reader Is all this photographer needs. A great idea, with lackluster execution and poor WD support.

Great storage solution, less than clear instructions
I purchased this portable external drive for a month-long off-grid photographic journey, and am very pleased with its performance. I'm glad I read the reviews first, and studied the on-line instructions before I left home, because I would have been out of luck out in the field. Other than a quick start-up sheet, instructions are only available with an internet connection. However, I did study the file and was able to rely on the portable battery-powered drive to backup my SD cards in a difficult environment.

Good with Mac, garbarge with Windows 10
Good thing I own both a MAC and a PC. This device works GREAT with MAC, but is completely unusable with Windows 10. . . It is just completely useless. So, if you really want to use this drive, you better own a Mac.

Good concept and immature product
Pros:
- You can access any file wireless and from multiple devices at same time
- Option to store any new file directly to SSD instead of using device local storage
- WD my cloud is good app
Cons:
- Data migration is unreliable. I made numerous attempts to copy data from existing disk to this wireless SSD using USB and wireless methods and after about every 1.5 GB of data copy, It will give an error code -50
- While deleting files, It will give an error "files are locked and check your system settings". System settings doesn't have any locking on, re-try, files are now deleted without any change in system settings
- Quality of Data copied from any source is unreliable
- You must be connected to same wifi connection in order to access data.
Bottom line: My primary need to buy this product was to store my Data, which is historical and precious to me and this device didn't earn my confidence to handle my data well. I can't rely on it. Uses was cumbersome that to after paying a premium price.
Returning it to amazon.

Cumbersome to use and heavy for travel.
I had planned to use this to backup photographs on an SD card while overseas, but found the wireless feature to be time-consuming and difficult to use so I eventually returned the item. You have to set up a wireless network with your phone or other device, and if you can't get the wireless to work, you can't use the drive. As others have mentioned it is heavy (about a pound) to travel with, and there is no safe eject of your memory card so there is always a risk it will be damaged. I also was concerned about compatibility when a new iPhone would be used. I am hoping in the future these issues will be solved with a more user-friendly version of this product.

Smart Card Slot Doesn't work on a MacBook Pro
Too difficult to setup, difficult to copy files to/from, and a smart card from my camera is never recognized by the drive, or by pushing the button that's supposed to copy a card automatically, etc.

The product seems glitchy. It has a hard time connecting to my iPhone. Sometimes it works fine, and others it refuses to connect. It has also corrupted some photo files during transfer. The battery life is awful...couple of hours during use. Using the auto backup on iPhone I have had 3 copies of the same files.

An absolute asset for traveling phototographers/videographers
Picked this up to help dump footage on a long road trip/ film trip for one of my clients, and was able to dump footage and photos nightly without issues, this thing is a beast! I do wish it was an SSD, or at least had a faster transfer speed within the app, but not bad overall!

Perfect SSD for Tesla
Was looking for a sentry drive for my Tesla model 3. This works perfectly, videos never fail to save to the drive and it’s easy to view from my phone since it has WiFi access. I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a nice SSD to put into your Tesla!

Reliable way to download camera memory while on location
Flawless design. The app software is a bit goofy when used with an Ipad. One can not do a bulk import in to lightroom mobile. The apple containers you are forced to go through is frustrating and pointless.

It does not work with AT&T Uverse
It looks good on paper. When I received the product, it is very bulky than other WD USD products. It doesn't work with AT&T Uverse. From google search of WD solution, I just found this is a known problem since 2018. I hope WD put a declaim to avoid unnecessary returns.

Not happy with it
It shut down by itself everytime i connected in my pc out of nowhere, i tried many times and same thing. I spoke with customer service and no solutions were provided and Couldn't return it!!

Great for backing up camera SD cards on the go
Works great even while using the wireless to access it. The SD auto backup feature works effortlessly, however I do wish there were more options on the folder structure it builds when backing up a card.

It has some draw backs but it is good for travel
I have taken the WD 500GB My Passport Wireless SSD External Portable Drive on a couple of trips. I use it to transfer files from my SD cards (that I use with my camera) to free up space. However, I actually view it as a safety drive to back-up my SD cards in case one of them gets lost or damaged.
Notes-
- Solid read and write speeds
- Not super light - I wish it was a little smaller
- Rubberized and durable -this thing looks like it could take a beating
- Not the most convenient thing to use - it took me a while to get the hang of transferring files
- I really like that it is a SSD drive, but it really is kind of pricey for what you are getting. This drive is easily several times more than other SSD drives. Of course, this one has the advantage that you can transfer files from the SD card directly to the drive without the need of a computer
Final verdict - Not a bad option if you need extra storage or if you want to take precautions in case you have an issue with a SD card... I just wish it was less expensive.

I like it
This has been a helpful drive for me. I had a previous version of this product (with a spinning HDD), which was okay. This one, with an SSD, is even faster. The price is a bit steep for the high capacity, but prices are dropping. I work as a professional photographer, so having a portable hard drive to back up photos on the go is a helpful thing to have for peace of mind and image file security. I don't use all of the features this thing has, but have played on occasion with the Wifi ability, phone charger as a backup battery, and a few other things. The card dump (not needing a full computer) is handy. I think this is likely one of the best devices of its type, given everything this can do, the large capacity, the rugged rubber cover, etc. I like it. If you can afford it, and it would be helpful, it's a decent choice.

great for travel
This is not as easy to use as a normal SSD style USB type portable drive, but once you take the time to read the directions on how to set it up (points at self) its a great way to have instant back-up for your photographs while traveling and without having to haul a laptop along for the ride. It's heavy.. if you are thinking of backpacking with it, but it is also robust and capable of taking some knocks.

Great connected, no so great Wifi
As a connected external hd, this is fantastic! It is rugged, VERY fast, and looks great. I use it as my daily Time Machine now, but when I was traveling it worked well. My only issue is how spotty and at many times non-responsive this can be when using the Wifi option. It just drops off the network for no reason. So for the price, it is expensive as a plug-in external hard drive, and there are less expensive options. But the value here was suppose to be wifi connection, and at least for me, that does not work often enough to have any value.
