I bought this drive new sometime in 2005, to replace an ailing Maxtor drive (by the way, I've sworn off Maxtor/Seagate after having several drives suffer problems, then reading up on how this brand has the most complaints of popular hard drive makers). This drive worked fine in my old Dell XPS Pentium III computer running Windows XP for a couple of years when mysteriously the NTLDR file went missing. I didn't abnormally shut down, which shouldn't cause this kind of problem anyway. Well, I was able to repair the Windows XP installation and everything was fine--no data lost at all. I won't attribute that fault to the drive, but will attest that the data held its integrity despite it.The drive runs quietly and the 8Mb cache in tandem with 7200rpm seems adequate enough for most read/write purposes. If your computer has USB 3.0 or an inherently fast data architecture, this drive will keep up.I would never buy a used hard drive, unless it was on serious discount and I wasn't worried about losing data on it (like on a secondary computer). Unless you have the option to return the drive, it'll be anyone's guess as to how much mileage the drive has had on it. Internally, the drive will keep track of hours active and number of times started from OFF. With the right software (like HD Sentinel), you can introspect the drive and find out this information. In any case, your data is the most valuable part of your computer. It is the most difficult thing to replace if you don't have a reliable backup. So, never skimp on the reliability of data storage.
Worked right out of the box. Just like it supposed to.I wasnt sure at first with the EIDE title, until I did some research on Google. Thanks Google and Thanks Amazon.Always satisfide with your help,
I purchased this drive on August 4, 2012 and installed about 8 days later. I use it as a backup drive with a program called Smartsync. All was fine until Friday, September 21, 2012 when it started failing with write failures. Then soon after (hours) it was 'Device not Responding'. Now the description did say it was used and most of the reviews for used drives were not high I bought anyway. I guess I should have heeded the reviews. I took a chance and lost.
I have needed more storage space for some time. I looked around and found this Hard Drive at a very reasonable price. It is very quiet, fast and simple to install. For those of you who need an EIDE Hard Drive, this one is more than up to the task.Pros: Western Digital! Ease of installation, fast, quiet.Cons: None.Definitely recommend this to anyone with an older PC not set up for SATA.
Required reformatting. This would have taken forever if I hadn't had another puter to connect via USB. Othewise perfect. Flawless. I'd buy more. Wait... I have bought more already. Good drive. Go for it.
Purchased this drive to replace a smaller 13GB slave unit (also a WD drive that had worked flawlessly for over 8 years but was unable to keep up with the storage demands of our new 7MP digital camera). The package contained only the bare bones drive unit itself, no documentation, no software, nothing else. That was fine for my case but could cause concern for some first-timers. I first just set the jumper on the new unit to the slave position, changed out the drives and restarted the system (Window XP Home). The new hardware detection ran OK and the new device showed up as operating correctly in Device Manager, but it was not visible in My Computer because it was not yet partitioned & formatted. After downloading the "Data Lifeguard Tools" program from the Western Digital support web site, and running the program to modify the registry for high-capacity drives, restart and partition/format process, all was well.
I have been working with computers for over 20 years on the home PC side. I have used Western Digital exclusively since buying my last 170 meg Hayes in 1993. I have always been happy with Western Digital's ease of installation and great technical support. There was no question when I purchased this drive as to which manufacturer I would support. Unfortunately, all the confidence that I had built up over the years was lost in one product.I will tell you that as a primary drive, this hard drive is very difficult to install. The directions that the manufacturer provides are great for installing it as a secondary drive, but they provide no information for installing it as a primary, which is important as there is a 130 meg barrier in Windows XP. Furthermore, when I was finally able to set aside time to contact tech support, they said that my drive, which I purchased 4 days ago, was three days out of its one year warranty! I had to photoshop together a receipt from screen caps (because I purchased the hard drive online.) to prove the date of purchase. They now require three days to verify the receipt. Unfortunately, because of this incident, I will never buy another Western Digital harddrive and would discourage you from doing the same.
I bought this drive to replace a smaller drive that was starting to make scary noises. The formatting, partitioning, and disk copy software worked as advertised, but the system didn't initially recognize it when I configured it as the master drive. I had to fiddle with the jumpers, but once I got that figured out it was fine.
After 6 months of happiness my drive is having lots of problems. I'm getting lots of blue screens and auto disks scans. I'm gonna go buy a different one.
I just bought these and also an external enclosure to use it as an external hard drive, so far i have tried it on linux (ubuntu), osX, and windows XP and it seems to work just fine
The description for this product says "Full kit includes drive cables, installation and management software, and illustrated instructions". All I got was an OEM drive... just the drive with no cable, rails, software, instructions or anything else. I don't know if an underpaid stockboy just screwed up or what, but everyone should be aware.I'm keeping it because I just wanted the bare drive anyway, but I wanted to warn others who might be counting on the additional items.
