Lost a lot of data with this one. Worked well for about a year as my primary boot drive. Upon post, BIOS started registering SMART errors, which indicated the drive was failing. The MBR became corrupt and after much effort was unable to recover the master boot record. Once I submitted for RMA, the replacement device arrived quickly and promptly. What's more the replacement was 500 Gigs larger! A 2TB drive, new and sealed. Sounds great. Using a SSD as my primary system disk, I allocated the 2 TB drive replacement as a backup drive. Lasted two weeks under minimal usage. Again a SMART bootup post error. Sounds like an abundantly common problem. It's a vicious circle and it's costing me hours and hours of my time so the aggravation factor is nothing short of redline.I work in I.T. and 90% plus of our harddisk failures are Western Digital Scorpio Blacks. This 1.5 TB drive, I believe, has a four year warranty. I'll be surprised if WD isn't bankrupt, first.

I bought three of these drives for my NAS system in the house. After about two years of being on - my NAS notified me that one of the drives is failing. It happens to any brand/model so i took it out and went to western digital website to see how i get a new one. (these have 5 year warranty). This is where good and bad companies separate - warranty. The WD website had me punch in the serial number of the drive and told me that my warranty was good to go - i described the problem and told them i needed a replacement drive. I was given two choices. 1. I send them the bad drive - they send me a new drive. 2. They send me a new drive, i put the old drive in that box and send it to them (you leave a credit card on file to make sure you ship the drive back or they will charge you for a purchase :). I chose the cross ship option (2). They sent me a new drive in a few days. I placed the old drive back in the box and dropped it off at USPS to be shipped back. It was that easy. I placed the new drive into the NAS - it spent an hour or so copying things to the drive and I've had a healthy nas for 6 months or so since that incident.Summary: These drives are fast! They do run a little warm. They have a great warranty. Would buy again!

Drive shows up to BIOS and to Windows 2003 R2 SP2 on a PowerEdge SC440. Capacity is correct. Spindle is spinning.Attempts to put a partition on the drive fail with "Internal error". Tried three SATA-II ports on 2 different controllers. Tried Acronis (silently fails) and Windows' "Disk Managmenet".If I Plug this into a Linux system, I can partition it, but I can't format it. Take it back to Windows and try to format it, and it tells me "The Format Did Not Complete Successfully". If I remove the partition, it shows removed, but if I exit Disk Manager, then come back, the partition is back.If I assign a drive letter to the partition, it goes away as soon as I exit Disk Manager. If I assign a drive letter during partition create, it fails because the partition wasn't actually removed during "Delete Partition".I've found lately that not all drives are engineered the same. Barracuda 5900, Constellation 7200, and WD Enterprise FBY* drives seem to be happy and stable in all systems. WD Caviar of any type, and Barracuda 7200 seem to be unstable or fail quickly. This is just my experiences. I haven't set up labs to test everything, but I shouldn't have to. There was a time that you bought a drive, plugged it in, and it just worked. *sigh*

Western Digital has drives set up in 3 different colors. The Green Series, The Blue Series, and the Black Series and also they have the Velociraptor High Performance 10,000RPM Drives. The Green is the most power friendly, usually slowest spinning drive, slower spin usually equates to slower access times and they are used mostly in home servers/Tivo/DVR any many other scenarios where low power consumption/low noise is important. The Blue series is a step up from the Green, usually offers a 16MB buffer, drive then is overall faster as more data can be stored in the drive's local memory. This unit of course has 64MB of memory, so it is great for access times on files that your system uses a lot. Dual Processors offload some of the processing from the CPU. The Black Series drive has 5 year warranty which for a drive this big and the usage you will be getting out of it, is a long time as in 5 years people will probably be buying 5-10 Terabyte hard drives as the norm, probably even larger drives as the new 3D Data storage technology is introduced and of course able to be utilized by the masses. In my opinion, for the people looking for a fast affordable drive, the Black Series are the best there is. If you are looking for anything faster, you will be considering Velociraptors or even the more expensive SSD's out there. For the best balance for price/performance/storage space, the black series is the way to go. I have 2 of the 1.5TB, 2 of the 2TB, and an SSD in my windows Home Server and love the Black Series of the WD Caviar drives. Can't wait for the Sata III's to become mainstream and cheaper so I can upgrade.

This is provisional so others can have the information. I did just order 2 of these for myself for a RAID server, but people should be aware these are not listed as a true product on Western Digital's website. They actually are a real WD product but are an OEM model that apparently is not available in retail boxen. (I'm really curious to see what arrives from this Gold Box deal - maybe it is the FAEX in which case this is a really great deal but that is speculation and I don't even hope for that since the FASS is discussed elsewhere on the web and is a valid model number.)But the 1.5 TB FASS isn't listed on Western Digital's web site. The suspicion is that these are really 2.0 TB FASS drives that had one side of one platter fail the QC check and so were simply forced to be 1.5 TB units. The only difference I can find between the FASS and FAEX drives is that the FASS are 3 Gb/s interface units and the FAEX can go to 6 Gb/s. The FAEX are also correspondingly more expensive.Other than that, with the 1.5 and 2.0 TB WD Caviar Blacks, you get dual processors and a 64 MB cache. But if you buy these, keep the receipt. I found one report of the drive not fully formatting. This is still a great deal but until I get mine and get them formatted, I am staying ready to return them. On the other hand, I have *never* had problems with a WD drive with one exception. I had a 60 GB drive start making noises and WD replaced it. All the rest have been pulled while working perfectly to be replaced with larger drives or simply decommissioned.

Let me start by saying that I bought this drive about a month a go. The moment I connected it and booted the OS I got error messages that the drive is failing. I checked the SMART status, and there it was, a huge bold FAIL warning on a red background. I thought oopps, I should replace the drive. The reason I'm writing this review now, after a month is that I thought "stuff happens, drives fail, this is probably not the first and definitely not the last".It's been 3 weeks now, of going back and forth with the WD RMA department. I'm still unable to replace the drive.I'm not in the US, so returning to Amazon was not really an option.I'm still trying to understand why WD do not want (they say they can't) to replace the drive. It has a valid "global" warranty, yet still I'm stuck with this imminent-fail piece of gadget.Needles to say that It will be a long time before I even think of buying anything WD offers.

I put this drive into service about six months before posting this review. Before using the drive, I ran it through my own standard torture suite which includes a multipass surface test. The drive passed without difficulty: SMART tests indicated it was still comfortably within thermal tolerance--even after more than a day of full-time activity. After half a year of serving as my main system drive (Mac Pro), I can report that it's been dependable with quite acceptable performance. I've always bought WD drives with confidence.

Got the hard drive very fast, so fast that i wasn't even ready to hook it up on my system. There were no cluster errors or any sorts when I installed it and its been running smooth. Can't beat the price for a 7200 rpm h/d for that cheap, even with tax and shipping added.

This is a surprisingly-quiet, very cool-running - always under 60 deg C. It's a winner for the price. I've used it to replace the OE, 320GB, WD HD in a 7,1 iMac. Considering that the original WD hard drive had simply died, for no apparent reason, I felt that I was taking a chance by replacing it with another WD drive. But, the Amazon price in proportion to the storage capacity was so low that I went with it. So far, so good! But, of course, you never know. It took four years for the previous drive to go.

I just received this today. I don't think you could find a better price for a WD black. I have this drive hooked up to my Directv HR21-100 as a DVR expander. The drive is working great and is very quiet. I'm hoping it will stand up to the test of time. I now have 1.5TB instead of 320gb for dvr recording and couldn't be happier.
