I don't want to repeat here what others have already written about this device. I concur with all the points mentioned in these posts, but I wish to mention the following: There are 2 hardware versions of this model TL-R470T+. They are hardware version 1.x, and hardware version 2.x, and I mention this because 2 of the features that I needed are available only on the more-recent hardware version 2.x devices. The hardware version number can be found on the sticker on the bottom of the unit, directly after the model number. The hardware version 2.x models have at least 2 additional capabilities that the older hardware version 1.x do not have. These are fail-over capability, which the router calls Link Backup, and port re-routing (if that's the correct term). With the Link Backup feature, instead of using the router for Load Balancing, you can instead set one WAN port as the primary WAN, and the other WAN port as the backup WAN. When the primary WAN goes down, the backup WAN is automatically used, until the primary WAN comes back connected again, at which time the router automatically switches back to the primary WAN. If you use more than 2 WANs, then you can program in various rules to handle your backup rules for all your WAN ports. The port re-routing setting allows you to have traffic that comes in on a certain port be routed to a different port internally. An example of this could be so that you can have RDP access to more than 1 PC internally, as follows (and yes, I know that opening ports for RDP is not very secure ;-):If RDP traffic comes in on port 3389, route it to port 3389 on internal computer # 1If RDP traffic comes in on port 3390, route it to port 3389 on internal computer # 2If RDP traffic comes in on port 3391, route it to port 3389 on internal computer # 3If RDP traffic comes in on port 3392, route it to port 3389 on internal computer # 4If RDP traffic comes in on port 3393, route it to port 3389 on internal computer # 5Again, both of these 2 additional capabilities, the Fail-Over (Link Backup) and Port Re-routing, are available only on the later hardware version 2.x models. I had initially purchased a TL-R470T+ from Amazon back in April 2012, and received a hardware version 1.2 at that time. But as I need both the Fail-Over and Port-rerouting capability, I took a chance and ordered another TL-R470T+ from Amazon last week, and I'm happy that the unit I received is hardware version 2.1About the only negative thing that I can say is, when you change the number of WAN/LAN ports, on at least the hardware version 1.x devices, you lose everything & need to set everything back up from scratch. I haven't tested that on my new hardware version 2.x device, but the settings screen does warn "Any change to the number of WAN ports may lead to a loss of current configurations. Please be sure to backup your configurations in advance."Overall I'm very happy with these devices, especially for the low price.EDIT:I initially had problems whereby the primary links would not switch back to normal after recovering from a downed Internet connection. This was something that I wished to test now, so as not to have a false sent of security thinking that everything would work as I wished whenever I lost my primary Internet connection .After extensive testing on a hardware version 2.x device with 2 Internet connections, I pass on the following to anyone wishing to use their TL-R470T+ in its fail-over (Link Backup) mode (as opposed to Load Balancing mode). The below settings will assume WAN1 to be Primary with a DSL modem connection using PPPoE, and WAN2 to be Backup with a Cable modem connection using PPPoE, but you can change yours if you wish, to suit your needs).1. Configure your router as you normally would. I won't list the steps here, as it's pretty straight-forward, but if needed you can click the Help button on each configuration page, or refer to the PDF manual on the included CD.Next, the following steps are not mentioned in the manual (as far as I know), so I'm including them here to save you days of frustration ;-).Ensure that you have set up both your WANs with your PPPoE information (Network \ WAN \ WAN1 and WAN2 tabs).Ensure that you have set up your Link Backup settings (Advanced \ Load Balance \ Link Backup tab).Next:2. On the menu on the left, select Advanced, then Load balance, and then select the Configuration tab at the top.3. Deselect both check boxes (for Enable Application Optimized Routing & Enable Bandwidth Based Balance Routing) and click Save.4. On the menu on the left, select Network, then WAN, then select the WAN1 tab at the top of the page.5. For Active Mode, select Always-on (for your Primary link), and remember to click Save.6. Select the WAN2 tab at the top of the page.7. For Active Mode, select Manual (for your Backup link), and remember to click Save. You can monitor your connections from the System Status page, by clicking Status from the menu on the left. I am an IT professional with a focus on data center operations and have previously worked in the SMB sector and I have worked with an uncountable number of different routers and this one isn't just the best one I've come across it is WAY in front of second place.First let's address performance. This router replaced a Cisco WRT54G because we got tired of going to the basement once a week and power cycle it. After the installation of this router I noticed that my download speeds went from around 900KBs to 1.8MBs sustained. I started multiple downloads to keep the connection pegged for a good 15 mins and it stayed right around that 1.8MBs mark. This leads me to the other really neat thing about this router.... from the router's website you can watch it's CPU utilization and also see which IP addresses are using the bandwidth. Even with this thing sustaining 1.8M speeds and multiple connections the CPU utilization never went over 20% as far as I saw.Now for configuration.... all I can say is wow! Don't let it scare you tho.... this thing is simple to set up and get running without using any of the advanced features but if you have a need for something it's more than likely there. This thing gives you many options for NAT, Virtual Servers, AIG, VLANs (per port on switch), session limiting, bandwidth limiting, traffic priorities, as well as various IP management options. Want to use it's DHCP server but need it to assign a different gateway, DNS, or other options? Not a problem. Need to look into ARP? It's got tools for that too. Do you want to keep an eye on what's going on via your syslog server? It'll do that too. It will also actively detect certain types of attacks (SYN FLOOD, FLOOD, WinNuke, Large Ping, etc) including IP blocking. It even has a basic URL filtering configuration. Oh, and it will actually load balance up to 4 different internet connections!Stability -- This device has been in operation for about a month now and we haven't had a single problem. It is serving 2 laptops, an iphone, 2 android devices, a file server, 2 different Roku devices, SIP phone, 2 printers, 2 desktops, 2 netgear APs (One 2.4 and the other 5), a media server, as well as a directTV box, bluRay, Wii, etc so there is no indication that you will overload it with too many devices :) We haven't noticed any issues with running different programs and services on our machines so it's obviously routing everything perfectly.Overall I really just can not recommend this router enough..... even if you are looking for a wireless router get this thing and an AP. Not only will you have the extra power for routing but when the wireless standards change (or someone figures out what the real N standard is) you don't have to change everything on your network. Trust me, it's well worth having the extra box!

Ok so for those of you out there that DON'T know much about these "Load Balancing" routers like me at first... They are usually in the $1000+ dollar range for good 4+ WAN (internet input) load balancing routers. This one is VERY inexpensive and seems to be working very well. As for the "Load Balancing" part. I thought that it actually combined all the incoming internet connections together to increase my speed... that it does NOT do. Instead what it DOES DO is it separated the load to your other connections. Someone wrote a review online somewhere that he took his two 10Mb internet connections (both with 20GB caps each) and combined them together and he was able to have a 40GB cap of usage without going over usage and 20Mb speeds. This is false and can not be achieved by use of this router or any other load balancing router. What it does is allow multiple connections to the intenet and as the load increases it essentially sends the load through the alternate connections. Your primary #1 connection is what it uses mainly and while you CAN configure the connection to cap usage of a single connection to a certain amount each month, it does not combine the bandwidth to increase your speed. If you have 4 3Mb Down 768Kb Up DSL connections going into it - your output is 3Mb Down and 768Kb Up. The advantage is that if before you could only run 3 connections through your one service before you now can multiply that by how many internet connections you connect to it (MAX 4 WITH THIS MODEL).Also, this router (I don't know if others do or don't but this one) doesn't combine all your connections into one single IP address so connecting a DVR camera system or something like that doesn't really work well with this router (the whole reason we bought this router). It still will only connect to one IP address at a time, even using DNYDNS. Haven't figured out a way to make that work yet.OVERALL: Very good, easy to use interface, connections and sleek small design. Works well and is very good for its price.Drawbacks: Unless you are familiar with the different protocols and settings that can be made with a load balancing router, there is not much help here with the user interface. So you kinda have to do some research on what each setting means if you are not experienced. There's no help option that explains what each setting does or is designed for.

I've worked in enterprise IT for more than a decade so I've had my fair share of Internet load balancers. Most of the home devices that supported redundant Internet connections were more for failover, that is, the secondary Internet connection was not used unless the primary one failed. To get full load balancing capabilities you had to use one of the enterprise products that could cost from $250 and up starting with just two fixed Internet ports. So when I came across this device I wasn't sure if it would really do what it said it would, even with all of the good reviews. Happy to say that it does exactly what it says, and does it well. Here are some of the things that I like about this device.> Surprisingly easy to set up out of the box. It comes pre-configured for two Internet ports, but you can have up to four. A wizard pops up on first connect and prompts you for information to set up your two WAN ports and that's it - you're connected. You will need to go to the WAN configuration to set up the bandwidth for each WAN to ensure proper load balancing, but if you have equal bandwidth on both links, that's not required.> Supports DynDNS and other dynamic DNS services and virtual servers. This is important for me as I have an internal server that I use to back up my websites every night.> Monitors the WAN links. Some devices look for the WAN link to fail, that is go offline, but this devices pings an IP from each link, so if the pings fail, it considers the link as failed and routes all connections on the other link.> Built-in firewall and URL filtering. Good for any home, although it would be nice to have time-specific URL filters instead of just time-specific firewall rules. I want to block sites like facebook during the day but leave access on at night (Facebook kills my productivity during the day!).> Nice metal case and sturdy feel. I know some of the lower cost enterprise load-balancers to be made of plastic, but this feels very rugged and not like a home device at all. I hope it means that the internal components are tough as well.Overall I am pleased with my purchase and would recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable load balancer for their home or home office. For the office you might look at the other load-balancers in the TP-Link series.

We have DSL here at work and I installed this router to provide us a fail-safe connection to another ISP in the event the DSL goes down. This router was very easy to configure for both the normal settings of any router as well as the fail-safe settings unique to this model. One small hiccup that I had to work around was the "rule" that the router follows to test whether your primary ISP is working. If you leave the rule set as "Auto" the TP-Link simply pings the Gateway address assigned to its WAN1 port. Since my TP-Link was a router behind another router the test always passed since the private Gateway address never failed to ping even if the Internet was down. I simply changed the setting to "Manual" and set a ping and DNS address that I knew would be a good server to check for Internet connectivity. After changing the "rule" everything worked like a charm! In addition to liking the fail-safe feature, this router never requires a reboot after any configuration changes, you just click "Save" and it's done. Anytime you are looking at a page that has dynamic data (like system status pages) the page continuously refreshes automatically. I also love that this router will pass private IP traffic through its WAN ports, allowing me to configure the DSL modem/router as if I was directly connected to it. A few of the terms the router uses were a little confusing at first (like port forwarding being called "Virtual Server" and the fail-safe settings being under the "Load Balance" tab) but after I familiarized myself with every page of the configuration screens it was very easy to follow. Best of all it was CHEAP!

Never knew my internet was being throttled by my last WAN router at 12Mbps till it finally started to die and I got this one to replace it. Same cable plan now gives me a reliable 20Mbps. The extra ports are not much use in my system since it is all 1GB and the ports max out at 100MB, so I only use one LAN port to connect into a GB switch to get WAN access onto the rest of my network.Four stars because of some of the "help" terminology. People who write this stuff need to realize that if there is a check-box for "Gryphensorph" (or whatever), I don't need to know that I check the box to enable "Gryphensorph" and that I need to uncheck the box to disable "Gryphensorph". What I need to know is WHAT IS GRYPHENSORPH?! If I already knew this, I probably would not need to be consulting the help files to learn how a check-box (or radio-button, or an edit-box, etc) works. There is a tendency lately to redefine words each time they are used. What we need is some straight talk, especially in help files.

i was skeptical on this device from the start... the $50 price tag, which is cheap and also of the name. ive used cisco and peplinks before but didnt want one due to the high cost.it took me about 5 minutes to completely do the initial install... 4 wan setup. it works flawlessly. it load balances between the 4 smoothly. it takes some tweeking to get the balance, traffic control, and bandwidth settings perfect... but thats just me though... im anal like that.the web interface is fast and has tons of options. it just works. im shocked and surprised. id buy this 100 times over again.for the price tag and for what i need it for... it runs great. also im a network admin, so this setup was easy for me, i can see how this can be a hard set up for a non tech person.ALSO... dont think you will get more download speed with more than 1 wan. its more for stability across the board. having several devices access the internet with out lag is the goal of this router. you can use a download manager and get more download speed, but in general, with one user, you will not an increase. with several/hundreds of users, you will not see a decrease either, just flat out stability.

Connected to two DSL modems using PPPoE. After obtaining the connection info from the ISP setup was VERY fast. Installed live during business hours with minimal downtime. Also when one of the modems failed the office was able to continue without any interruption.I was signed on to maintain a small business network. The previous system consisted of two DSL modems that feed a single network and each computer had a gateway manually set in an attempt to divide up internet load. Modem crashes would cause some office computers to cut out, and during server backups other computers would slow to a crawl. The setup added needless complexity and often resulted in maxing out one connection while leaving the other untapped. This device managed to simplify the network and help almost completely eliminate internet downtime.

I don't post a lot of reviews, but this was one I really wanted to write. At first I was very skeptical given the cost of this unit compared to the big name competitors such as Cisco, Netgear, and Linksys. All in all, a fantastic product, especially for the money.Use case: I need to have serious uptime at a home office that had started to have sporadic outages with Time Warner Cable (no surprises there). I also have a lower bandwidth (but more reliable) Frontier/Verizon DSL line that I wanted to use as a backup in a dual WAN setup. Not only does this router do dual WAN, it can do up to four WAN connections. Needless to say, I just needed two WAN connections and the others I configured as LAN ports that connected to other switches in the environment.Setup was a breeze. Logged into the router, setup which ports you want as WAN and you are off and running. The Cable WAN found a public IP address to bind to 98.x.x.x, and the DSL found an internal private IP 192.168.254.x. The TP-Link used 192.168.0.x so there were no conflicts.I also run a Polycom 501 SIP phone for work and it has been notorious for not working with some routers that don't allow you to enable/diable SIP ALG. The SIP phone booted up and was able to TFTP boot instantly, and login to the SIP server.Very very satisfied. Hope this helps.

Ужасно

Most routers have a setup procedure within the router or on a CD. What you get with this is a bunch of PDF files on a CD. Once you find the PDF for this model (good luck) you will see pages of pages of instructions which are difficult to decipher. The actual router settings must be painstakingly entered through the browser. No help there.I have set up routers for 15 years and I assume the technology used in this one pre-dates that. After working at this for a couple of hours I gave up, went out and bought a modern router and had it set up in twenty minutes. Yes, this thing is cheap for what it supposedly can do, but YOUR time is worth something and there is no excuse for such sloppy setup in the 21st Century.

I bought this after reading all the positive reviews. My experience with it has been pretty fantastic for a piece of networking hardware. This came pre-installed with the latest firmware, and the web administration panel is quite user friendly, but keep in mind there are so many options, it can be intimidating. If you're not a power user, buy the Apple Airport Extreme. After reading the manual and learning about networking a bit online, the power of this router really starts to come to light. It's quite amazing for a $55 device. The only caveat being, this is only 100mbit, it's not 1000mbit (gigabit). And of course there is no wireless, but you probably already know that. Overall I am quite happy, but as soon as you get an internet connection over 100mbit, this becomes obsolete.

It is a great value for the price.

I have two DSL connections I wanted to bond together for faster throughput (not really higher speed; think of it like more lanes on the freeway rather than a faster speed limit)I have two DSL Modems and I configured the TPLink to have two WAN ports. I made sure their IP addresses where different from the TPLink's IP (no conlficts) I simply plugged in the two DSL Modems, and then plugged another wireless router into one of the LAN ports of the TPLink. The wireless router gets the benefit of BOTH DSL lines. I also have a 10 port switch connected to another one of the LAN ports, for local LAN devices. So far everything works, but I still need to fine tune the whole network. Eventually what I will do is use the TPLink for the main DHCP server and turn DHCP off everywhere else. The problem is I have limited hours when the network isn't being used so I can take it down to rework everything.I really see a difference speed-wise. If I do a single download, the speed is the same, however if I use a download manager (which downloads from several servers at once - many connections) I see huge speed increase. For the price, this router can't be beat.

Huge bang for the buck.It took about 10 minutes to configure my two static WAN connections from my two different ISP's. It took me another 10-15 minutes to configure my excisting Asus Wireless Router as a primary WiFi access point.I live out in the country and I only have two choices available for internet. Neither provider was good for internet gaming. So, after a little reseach & reading about load-balancing with two connections; I figured I give it a shot. The TP-Link Router was the solution to my problem. Internet ms is a third of what it was with only one connection & download speeds have almost doubled. Gaming lag is almost un-noticeable.This was a good choice for me to test. I am looking to get a more expensive unit with more bells & whistles once I learn how to tweak this unit to its full potential.I would definitely recommend this product for those who want a load balanced Internet connection in their home with little to no out-of-the-box problems.
