This drive is great--and works with legacy systems like Windows 9x, but yet can handle the latest version of Debian (a Gnu/Linux OS) with swap space on. Read/write speed is fast, even on an older 450 MHz notebook where I installed it. No bad sectors where found on this drive, and the pins were rigidly intact--and IDE drives in this shape are getting harder to find. I've used Maxtor and Seagate drives in the past, and I've learned to trust them--most of the time, they work--although like with any product, there are exceptions. As long as it's installed properly, it should work for whatever you need to use it for--and I would recommend it for older computers that don't use the SATA interface.Edit: Be careful when relying on these drives, though. Within a few weeks, several files have not been readable because they've went corrupt. A quick disk check usually fixes the problem, but things don't always write to disk properly, or at least in the case of this drive, which is why it lost a star. I'd recommend backing up your data whenever possible and checking whatever filesystem is in use regularly.
The drive is quiet and seems fast enough on an old Dell XPS M140 2GHz Intel laptop. I have a personal rule to avoid putting money into old computers, but a friend recently gave me the laptop without a hard drive, and it seemed in excellent shape, so I decided to take the risk. Put the drive in, installed Linux Mint 13, and I am amazed by how well it all works. Having avoided Linux systems for the past few years, I am also amazed by how easy it is to use the new Linux Mint, but that's another story.I deducted one point because of the drive's age and my doubts about the warranty. While it had never been used (I checked the internal SMART data), the drive's Seagate Date Code (10045) shows that my drive was manufactured almost three years ago, on July 29, 2009. When I checked the drive serial number with Seagate for warranty coverage, I got the same message as another commenter here: it is an OEM drive, not covered directly by Seagate. If the drive fails I suppose I'll email the vendor, but I did not see any warranty information. Hope it doesn't fail.
Good and quiet drive that I used to upgrade an old HP laptop, I could not think of anything bad about this drive.
The product worked great. It was 30 GB larger than the old drive, faster and less expensive.Installation was easy.Instructions about how to transfer the OS and other programs and data were non existent. It took me 10 hours to find out how it get it done and do it.
I have been waiting to write this review because I wanted to give this drive some extended run time first. I purchased this drive six months ago to replace the original that failed in my Thinkpad T42 after seven years. This new drive has been running perfectly and it is very quite during startup, seeks and normal operation. Before installation I transfered some mechancial parts; guides, cover and screws from the old drive to this new one. So don't throw your old parts away too soon.
Laptop drive crashed. Installed this drive with laptop adapter from old drive, restored image back-up & was off & running.
Bought this for Gateway MS Vista laptop back in Nov 2012. Installed in old laptop with no issues. Still using this laptop today.
Had ordered the wrong part and the guys helped me return it and get the right part with no hassle. My computer is back to normal almost.
So far, so good. Installed easily and re-imaged it with no problems. Customer has not complained about any problems yet.
Drive arrived and works fine. I used it to upgrade from a 20 gig drive in an Dell laptop i picked up
Installed drive in my older R40 Thinkpad. This drive is very quiet and performance is much snappier than original Hitachi drive that came with this Thinkpad.
perfectly good drive, but for only about a month -- then died suddenly without warning, ouch. What's more, according to the Seagate site,"The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives."I contacted the seller and hopefully they'll come through -- will update this review as that happens, or doesn't.Regardless, I'm not generally a fan of Seagate drives, and wish I'd have paid a little more for a different one
Bringing new life to my old gear is VERY satisfying. Better than ... well, almost. My laptop is alive again. First I got some ram, but then I noticed I was waiting for the hdd a lot. No more waiting. Maybe a little. My laptop serves its purpose, & this hdd makes it possible to do what I want without wanting to bumpslapp the transistors out of it. Yeah, I probably could have bought a sata drive and an adapter card, but I just wanted my laptop up and running properly. Pata/IDE drives aren't bad if what you do is mostly web surf ... mostly. Especially at these rpm's & cache quantity. 2 megs of cache vs. 8 megs. Yup, you guessed it I'm a happy customer.
I found this hard drive very acceptable. I installed it in my Apple iBook G4 without a problem and proceeded to install Leopard on to it without any problem.
What's not to like !?? It's quiet, smooth, and it worked just fine as an upgrade for an old Toshiba laptop.
I purchased this drive to replace a 40gb drive which had fried in an 8-yr old IBM Thinkpad (now Lenovo) T42 laptop. Most replacement drives in the marketplace are now SATA drives; the older technology IDE drives are getting scarce. I was fortunate to find this one; it arrived on time, well-packaged, and in perfect condition. But note..there was no retail Seagate box; the drive was packaged in an anti-static envelope only (typical of bulk drive purchases by the vendor). Seems to be working like a charm, but I've only had it for a few weeks. If problems develop, this review will be edited.
This hard drive was shipped on time and is working great the price was killer too. I would purchase again from this vendor.
Arrived in proper packaging for a sensitive device ( a Harddisk ), and had notes and precautions to prevent loss due to bad handling on the part of the customer.
This hard drive has worked perfectly so far. I purchased this to replace a failing 2.5" IDE hard drive in my older laptop and have had no problems.
It arrived ahead of scheduled time and worked. How long it will work I'll never know as laptop already sold in which it was installed.
The drive was very easy to install in my Dell Latitude D600 and works very well. It was well packaged, but it did take a month to receive it after ordering.
This drive arrived a lot faster then I thought it would of came and it was well packed it fits my image storage device well but is a tad loud on data seeking but other then that it's a nice drive!
Hard drive came well sealed and was shipped fast. works great! Used as replacement for a older IBM t42, perfect fit.
Purchased this hard drive to replace the one that failed in my Toshiba laptop. So far so good. Again, it's a good brand and a good price, and it shipped and arrived a lot sooner than I thought. It's also quiet and has a good amount of memory. I've had it for a few weeks and so far I am satisfied.
