BUT. There's always a but. The so-called DEX multi-tasking was a big disappointment. It doesn't work much better than the clunky split-screen mode on the S2. You can run two apps at once, but only if they are "compatible" with the Samsung OS, and only if you have enough memory. It is possible to take notes while listening to Spotify, but this is not a laptop and you cannot really use it like one. It is designed for consumption of content, not for production. While my bluetooth keyboard worked fine on it, it was fussy to set up and use. Typing on glass is a no-go. "Bixby," Samsung's answer to Siri and Alexa, is primitive. I wondered if I had made a mistake and if my portable needs had evolved more into production.
The answer came when the device locked up for no reason and became as responsive as a brick. Nothing could prod it to reanimation. Frustrated, I put the tablet aside and turned to other things. Next day it booted up fine and behaved normally. A one-off, I thought. But no. It happened again two days later and stayed brick-like for half an hour. Bummer. I'd have to send it back. Fortunately, with Amazon's generous return policy, I had no problem with that, but I decided not to replace it. The experience gave me an excuse to re-think my needs. Maybe I had outgrown the whole tablet thing.
After intensive research, I sprang for a Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (which is not the latest model, but the best value in that category). It operates as a tablet with a pen if need be, but it is also a full Windows 10 computer for the same price as the Galaxy S4. (Not counting the keyboard and pen, which, if you want them, are $250 more). So far, the Surface 6 meets my needs. The sound is not nearly as good as the Galaxy, but when traveling I generally need to use earphones anyway to be sociable. The high-priced Microsoft keyboard is fabulous. I miss the Galaxy's compact form factor. A 12" Surface screen is more practical for work than the tablet's 10" but less comfortable to hold in the hand. And there simply aren't as many apps for Windows as for Android. The Surface is way faster though, and you can type on it and have multiple windows open while you work on a couple of files, listen to music and look stuff up. It's a real computer. But if the Galaxy S4 had worked, I know I'd be happy with it for browsing, listening, watching, and goofing-off. Who wants to work all the time?
I have a feeling that small, light laptops like the Surface will soon supplant the tablet concept for consumers like me. Tablets will still have a place in service industries, POS, and other business apps, but as everyday computing becomes more affordable and portable, you won't need a tablet. Tablets are a terminal technology.
