I would've preferred Samsung retain the gaudily flamboyant "glasstic" silver with the prismatic light show. Be that what it may, instead of either Red, Gold, Cobalt Blue, or Purple color I've seen earlier 📱, I went for Awesome White, (at least the metallic-looking color-coordinated bezel looks snazzy!)
I also dig that for the first time in this division, a modicum of dust & water protection up to IP67. In addition, despite my worst fears via reading other reviews, the A72 is merely slightly wider @ 6.7," nor @ 7.16oz(203 grams) not heavy at all and easy to grip despite having a claw-life left hand due to an injury.
Since this is an unlocked GSM handset from 🇲🇽, vs. a 🇺🇸 model, to get it to run from our cell towers in addition to activating a phone number, I had to download a file transfer app, then had to call my carrier's customer support, explaining my upgrade scenario requesting a separate Sim card, then input router style settings about the A72 as well as writing a listing of all the apps on the old phone to download from Google Play to reinstall once the new phone was fully operational on September 30th. Because my J7 2018 was roughly equal to today's Galaxy A02, I was as clueless as "Hogan's Heroes" "Sgt. Schultz" as to what was in store for me once I restarted as a fully operational handset!!
I was genuinely gobsmacked by the brightness, clarity & detail of the display & the potential power of the tetrahedral camera array totaling 121MP, with Dual OIS on both the primary & telephoto cameras, & the 32MP selfie rivals my 2017 Canon Elph 360 which my Facebook buddies took note when they saluted the portrait shot I took! The results were so dazzling that instead of immediately going to the Galaxy Store to download a theme or tmwo I decided to keep Android 11 until new Thanksgiving, Xmas & New Year 2022 show up to festoon on my display. The only thing that irked me on the display was that the screen blacked out in 10 minutes despite having a 5kmAh battery & I have the phone tethered to a Type C-A cable that connects to a PC hub!!
I didn't try the fingerprint display because the facial recognition component failed on the J7 leading me to rely on a number code to control both phones.
The performance of the Snapdragon 720G SoC was lively & assertive for what I do with this phone which is posting on Facebook friends, & stream TV as well as 🛰️ radio broad & YouTube Music via my JBL E35 headphones!
Even though I had desired the 8GB/256GB edition of the Samsung Galaxy A72, Amazon only had it in "Darth Vader" Black which I'm 🤮 of, quite frankly! & e-Bay only shipped to residences which promulgates & propagates the plague of porch piracy that's pinching peeps presents presently!!! therefore, the base 6/128 version will have to do. Because I have with this device, 3x the memory, 4x the space augmented with one of the fastest reading/writing sd cards with double the storage of the A72, tailor-made for a Go Pro Camera meaning I'm ready for ANYTHING LIFE HAPPENS TO THROW MY WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fact that Samsung states that will update the OS for three years, as well as security for four, are swell providing another 🏹 in the quiver.
As stated, what clinched the deal for me, in the end, was the Dual OIS camera on the primary & telephoto lenses, as well as the zoom capability that made me invest my moola in the A72 while every phone review & their relative was proclaiming the A52 as the ultimate deal!! Here's why I don't believe the hype about the A52:
Up until July 2017, when I scored the aforementioned Elph 360 which had both OIS & 1080p resolution, like the A72, I hadn't taken a successful picture due to meningitis I had as an infant causing my hands to shake excessively causing me ruined pictures via blurriness, which caused me to forsake picture taking from the 1983 St. Patrick's Day parade until July 2017.
I felt that it's better to have & not need, than need & not have!! If not for the lifelong struggles I would've gone for the A71 which is why knowing the significant financial risk I proclaimed A72 or bust!!!!!!!!!!! despite the unique hurdles I faced getting it, I'm grateful to finally have it!! for it gives me a real chance at a photo album of my friends that I never had before!
As for the 5kMAh battery, It does charges up significantly quicker & last longer, i.e.starting this review @ 15:30 on this Wednesday until 17:56 the battery only lost 10% from 100% to 90% while the J7 went from 85% down to 70% & need a couple of hours just to gain the 15% lost, which meant requiring an overnight charge JUST to go from Empty to Full!!
What prompted this upgrade
In retrospect, had I not heeded the push notifications Samsung was nagging me about "getting a slice of pie!" enticing me to upgrade to Android 9, The J7 was still doing pretty good with the only issue being the lack of OIS on the camera. I've always had an inquisitive spirit since my microdot years ergo I couldn't wait to install it on the old 📱 which I did last March 8th via a unique Hotspot on-demand deal Xfinity had, That was the beginning of the end for the smartphone for apparently, with a mere 2 GB of RAM, "Sweet Potato Pie" was in effect, Sweet Potato Cheesecake, that's how slow the "Phablet" ran & it didn't help that I became addicted to weather apps which slowed the poor 📳 to the point that I had to choose between posting, on Pinterest/Facebook, listen to either radio or TV because either one would cause the radio to stop working & a reset & purge only brought a couple of months of surcease before the dropouts resumed, that was the last straw & with the powerful camera array being too potent to resist with the features too captivatingly compelling NOT TO MASTER & one of the brothers demanding I live as austere as they do so I finally took the plunge and finally got it & so far everything's breaking my way the investment is well worth it for me
What irked me
1. That my carrier while coming up with a free Sim card, prefer to offer modern up-to-date Samsung handsets that are entry-level or State-of-the-art flagships that are beyond my paygrade with nothing to upgrade to except obsolete flagship devices with archaic EVERYTHING!!!!!! Forcing one to look for an unlocked, "gray" international phone that may not work
2. For some inscrutable reason, even though we in America undoubtedly are one of the top markets to ply cell phones, Samsung refuses to offer a US version of either an A72 or A72-5g to run on our carriers, preferring to foist on us The S20\21 FE, Well, with the utmost respect to whoever is the marketing swamis, NOT EVERYONE has the bread to invest in a straitened, S series, nor if it were found to be devoid of unique features, such as a charger, expandable memory cards or a headphone jack for regular headphones, they would think it isn't worth it. I have Bluetooth buds; they are NO PANACEA, my JBL Endurance Peak buds, even when fully charged, could only play 4 hours, then go dead; storage via the cloud is much like cryptocurrency, an overrated hype with both your data & money going right into the ether, void, oblivion!, which is why I have a pair of JBL E-35 old-school headphones!! Which sounds very good as the buds without the diva-type issues the buds seem to have!
I also don't think it's too cool to offer 🇲🇽 phablets THAT CAN'T BE REGISTERED IN🇺🇸!
In conclusion, I'm grateful this wasn't my 1st cell phone; I had a steep learning curve which an 🗽accultured J7 Facebook Interest Group would've mitigated, as it was mastering that one was so tricky that I bricked the 1st one but fortunately, I could exchange it, with this A72 the stakes are much higher being it would be next to impossible to return it, I'm glad, with the help of the carrier, everything is OK This A-72 is worth the money I INVESTED IN IT!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, Amazon & Consumer Cellular, for making it possible to own a beautiful, well-endowed handset at a reasonable price!!
Update: A warning to any American owners of this handset A month after this review, I received a couple of letters from Consumer Cellular warning me about the shut off of the 3g section of cell towers by January 31st or earlier. & the only symptom I got from this phone was an inability to download apps from Google Play Store! Because of deceptive advertising from Amazon stating that it was a 4g phone, I disregarded it until a receptionist @ CC gave me this phone's 💀☠⚰ knell into electronic 👿! I blew $535 for the phone plus another small fortune for the customizing "bling" I feel that from this day forward, Amazon should recall these devices to either repair by upgrading them to 4g & return them to owners(which I prefer) produce them for a refund or exchange them for a phone that's comparable to the A72 that can run on 🗽🇺🇸 4g towers, take them off US Amazon! This is my sole phone! & I can't afford to get another one because I have other issues I have to deal with @ the moment! Subsequent US buyers,
An answer in the Q&A section on this page clearly states this phone can handle 2 SIMS and an SD card at the same time and it cannot. So the Q&A section is misleading. I took off one star because Samsung saw fit to remove the dedicated micro sd card slot from this mid-tier line. Their A70, which I was using previously, had both the 2 SIM slots and a dedicated micro sd card slot. If Samsung does not put this configuration back in their mid-tier line, I am done with them. After returning the A72, I purchased the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro which I am very happy with. It has both the 2 SIM slots + the dedicated micro sd card slot. And it was over $100 less expensive!
I am not sure why people are complaining about where the phone was made. MOST ALL PHONES are made in China or Vietnam. They ALL START at this version - international, then the American phone companies add in all their crappy bloatware and lock them to their networks. It's a scam and, I believe, we are the only country that does that.
You set the phone up the same way. It has loads of languages to select. And, you're done. Nothing but a nice, clean phone. It doesn't have 5G, it's still an LTE phone (4G). Not a lot of phones currently work on the 5G network so this phone should be good for some time. Just because phone companies advertise their 5G networks on TV, doesn't mean you phone is compatible. Currently, there are a handful of phones that are 5G and not every "5G city" actually has "good" 5G service.
It comes with a charging brick in the box. So, mid-tier phone has brick, high end version? NO. It actually kinds looks like the newer Samsung S21 from the camera hump. It's a lot prettier in person than the picture.
Overall, this is a great phone for a great price. You are getting a Samsung phone that is large, has all the features you want and none of the phone company excess weighted garbage installed. If you want a newer phone, don't need or want the high end specs, or high end price, I would recommend this phone to you. It looks good, it sounds good, and it comes at a reasonable price.
