First experience with a phono box and I couldn't be more pleased!
I would love to upgrade to a tube phono box at some point, but it will be tough to do being as I can't imagine a much better sound!

Simple to use and the sound is good. Low noise, low distortion. No grounding issues. I don't think you could do better without spend 2 or 3 times as much. I'd definitely recommend this to friends because it is good and reasonably priced. Unless you are using the highest quality stereo system in a finely tuned listening room, this is plenty good for your use case.

Ridiculously loud buzzing sound that only decreases slightly with the ground lead connected. Don't buy this.

This pro-ject phono box is amazing.I needed a phono stage to go between my Dual 505-4 turntable and denon hifi. It works perfectly and packs a punch. Its very easy to set up and is small so able to sit at the back of my turntable. Very fast delivery and reasonable price.

Not adjustable... amplifies a turntable input... doesn't seem to add any noise. Does what it's supposed to do. Also, it's very small, so doesn't take up shelf space

I don't want to be too harsh because it may be a very good value addition for an all digital mid-priced setup. [That's why 4 stars].
I was impressed with the name, the pricepoint and the reviews here. My primary reason for buying this was to eliminate the hum I was getting in the system.
I tested it thoroughly and found it unsuitable for my setup (Project Debut Carbon TT, Pioneer AV receiver VSX-AX4ASi and bi-amped PMC floor standers).
My observations were as follows:
1. It had a very negligible impact on the hum. [Yes, I did connect the earhing terminals].
[Later I was able to eliminate the hum completely by putting the SKY box power lead on a different power point which obviously was creating the earthing differential in the set up.]
2. It had a slighly positive impact on the soundstage (in that it was bringing it marginally forward).
3. It had a very negative impact on the resolution of sound. It was muddling up the sounds as it was increasing the loudness. The separation between the various sounds (of musical instruments) was getting lost at the cost of slight increase in loudness.
So I had to return it.

I have severe doubts about the build quality of this product. It sounded fine, except for the fact that the left hand channel developed a huge amount of distortion and I had to return it.

I bought this to connect my turntable to my little valve amp which has no phono stage. I was impressed with the build quality as soon as I opened the box. It's actually more weighty than I expected which to me is a good thing. Sound is beautifully clear and precise. Cannot fault it.

Purchased after some research as I needed to connect some old technology (my dual record deck) with some new technology ( B &W A7 amp) allowing me to resurrect my old vinyl records. The Project Phono Box MM works well with the proviso that it does pick up a little hum from the deck if placed too close, this was rectified with some experimentation. I have had great fun listening to my old record collection brought to life with this bit of kit.

Perfect for hooking up an old technics turntable to a stereo. Could be a bit lower cost but still affordable. Highly recommend.

Left channel stopped working after one week. I can't even get it replaced.
Bought a second one, same problem. works for a weak, and then the left channel dies, as soon as I plug in a different (cheaper) preamp, both channels start working again.
Complete garbage.

I base my comments on an unusual combination of my old Rega Planar 2 deck with an Ortofon VMS 20E cartridge feeding a Yamaha YSP-2200 sound projector... So HiFi purists may disagree!
Used in this system this inexpensive box has has produced results well beyond my expectations with a smooth, balanced audio performance including a sharp bass. Excellent value for money.
There's no on/off switch though, which means I end up leaving ot on all the time. Pity.
Highly Recommended.

Up and running this is a good product. However, if you are buying beware that it comes with a U.S. Style plug so you will need to order an adapter at the same time.

I just hooked it up (really easy to do) and noticed an immediate difference in noise. The background was clear and quiet. The only thing to note is check your plug adapter for the hz your unit runs at, as the pulley you use on the table is determined by that number. I had it on the wrong one at first and it hummed like a un-grounded unit, as soon as I made the switch the noise was gone. I have no idea why it makes a difference, but it does.
You literally take the power adapter from you turntable off, plug the box output into that input on your turntable, and then plug the box into the wall. The ability to switch speeds and not screw around with the platter and pulley is worth the box alone, but the better sound...total bonus, didn't believe it would make one until I heard it!
The ONLY negative is the cord from the box to your TT is really short.

I used this phono box with a Project Elemental turntable and a Denon amplifier. The box is very small, but well constructed. However, I experienced what I felt to be poor signal to noise ratio with this box. As a result it was necessary to increase the volume on my Denon amplifier in order to play the music at a satisfactory level (volume number 33 for vinyl compared to 26 with cd on the same amp)This increased the hum which is common in phono stages. I added an additional earth cable to a grounding point (radiator) as there was clearly a ground loop issue, but was never satisfied with the reduction in noise/hum, finding this intrusive on quieter passages of music.

This is an OK phono stage if you have a small budget (sub-$200). But I can't help thinking it's still overpriced by about half. I wanted to like it too, since I thoroughly dig my Pro-Ject RPM 1.3 turntable. I also dig the Pro-Ject Speedbox I bought for that turntable. But the Phono Box sounds bloodless and limp. Everything is clear and clean but pale and washed out with no "oomph" in the bass. After a month, I gave my Phono Box to a friend (he loves it) and got a Vincent PHO-8. Yeah, I paid twice as much for the Vincent but it absolutely SLAYS the Phono Box in my system. Live and learn.

I originally purchased the economical Pyle PP999 Phono Turntable Pre-amplifier from Amazon which sounded quite nice with my Pro-ject Essential II turntable when plugged into my Yamaha receiver with output through my Klipsch speakers. I wanted to see if there appeared to be any difference in sound quality using the Pro-ject Phono Box preamplifier. I could not set this test up as a double blind sort of study, but the Pro-ject preamp did seem to make the sound a bit crisper than with the cheaper pre-amp. Thus, I would recommend the Pro-ject preamp, especially if it ever goes on sale again for $80 as it did when I bought it from Amazon. On the other hand, many of you would still probably be satisfied with the $12 Pyle pre-amp as being able to do a decent job for a much cheaper price.

I was using a cheap battery operated pre amp before buying the Project. The main problem on the battery powered one was that the treble was a bit harsh and sibilant. I connected the project Preamp to my Project record deck, attached the ground lead and tried it out. Excellent sound. Rich bass, good midrange, and good treble. No sibilance at all. Also no hum, as I see other people have experienced. Well worth the cost compared to my previous pre amp. You get what you pay for, I guess.

The amp stopped working after about 3 weeks. As I'm an electrical engineer by trade, I busted out my oscilloscope to try and debug the issue. Turns out the power supply was bad, and since it uses a proprietary connector (or at least one I'd never seen before) I couldn't replace it myself. I tried to file a warranty claim, and the manufacturer told me to contact Amazon. Amazon handled the situation about as terribly as possible and charged me a 20% restocking fee (so $20 for what is likely a $5 broken part that was under warranty). This product is ok, but beware that the warranty is completely useless (if purchased from Amazon) and, as I've proved, these _can_ break.
UPDATE: After fighting for a full refund, I bought another one of these, as I still believe this is the best option at this price point. It seems they have changed the power connector to a standard "barrel type". Your millage may vary, but if the power supply goes bad on my new unit, it is nice to know that I can easily replace it myself.

The phono box solved the problem of low volume using the gold ring lenco turntable with Bose wave system.
