Purchased this unit from Amazon, just returned it.[UPDATE: Purchased Roland Octa-Capture, which is just about the only USB-based unit in this category and costs about $300 more. It works great out of the box with zero hassle and has a lot of nice features the FireStudio doesn't have - of course for almost twice the price it better have some extra features! Here's to hoping that our friends at PreSonus come out with some USB / Thunderbolt / PCI versions of their otherwise fine products.]I am running Win7x64, and I am a happy user of PreSonus' StudioOne V2 DAW, so what better to complement my setup?Unfortunately, this unit hammers home the fact that FireWire is a legacy and soon-to-be-orphaned technology.I am using all the appropriate interfaces and drivers on a computer that has full hardware compatibility according to PreSonus' specs, including my shiny new startech Firewire card as recommended.The unit plays normally for a while, and slowly starts developing harsh digital noise on playback. I have tried everything reasonable for debugging the problem (note that I have many years of computer / electronics experience as well as BS/MS/PhD in electrical and computer engineering).Upon going to PreSonus' online forum (as opposed to these amazon reviews) I quickly discovered that this issue is typical and common.Note that this may not really be the "fault" of Presonus other than the fact that they need to be more on the ball about ditching FireWire and adding more USB2.0/USB3 products to replace these - heck, even Apple is phasing out firewire. If you look at the comments on the forums and amazon product reviews for the equivalent FocusRite boxes, the complaints are basically the same or worse.I am going to probably get the Roland Octa-capture OCTA-CAPTURE - Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Audio Interface, which is USB-based, is more feature-rich, and gets positive feedback for reliability and performance both on Amazon and in online support forums. The downside is that the street price for that unit is about $250 higher than this presonus unit: however presuming that "it just works" then that's a bargain compared to futzing around with the FireStudio for a few weeks trying to get it to work, and then living in fear of ever being able to upgrade my hardware or OS again.Realistically, unless you've already got a RAID box and a high-speed network card running on your USB bus at a high traffic rate then USB 2.0 should not offer a practical disadvantage over firewire for audio signals up to about 96K/24bit rate: i.e. it would take 40 mono channels of full-blast I/O at that rate to consume half the bandwidth of a single USB bus.In conclusion, Firewire was only a good idea in the era of USB 1.0 / 1.1.

I bought this item for a co-worker. Everything came as advertised. One little problem i had was it came in three different packages at three different times which means i had to pay three different prices to get the items cleared which was a bit costly. If it wasn't for that it would have gotten the full five stars!!! But thanks for the service...

I took it out of the box and it was ready to go pretty much. The only problem but not really a problem i had to download new drivers from PreSonus website.

I strongly suggest against purchasing any PreSonus device. The technical support is non-existent. I sat on hold for an hour last week, and 4 hours yesterday, only interacting with the computer on the other end. After 11 days of attempting to contact their technical support, I posted on the technical support forums and one of their users was gracious enough to suggest that BOTH of my FireWire chipsets are incompatible, even though neither is listed on the compatibility chart accompanying the device's technical specifications.It was a pain to get it installed, a pain to find the upgraded drivers, and the technical support is non-responsive. Do not purchase a PreSonus device unless you enjoy being frustrated.At least they have a few users on their forums that are both helpful and informative. Cheers to the users keeping the company alive.

Purchased this about 4 months ago and I'm really happy with the results I'm getting...professional sound quality. Mine came with Presonus Studio One Artist which I upgraded to Studio One Pro with Melodyne and Guitar Rig 4. Studio One is really great...it's easy to use and navigate and has a project room where you can master your songs without 3rd party software. Melodyne is intergrated into the program. Hitting control+M brings up the software so you can easily correct pitch problems with guitar, bass, vocals..etc. The Firestudio Project has 8 xlr inputs with great(clean)sounding pre's and a stereo digital in. It also had 4 sets of outputs so you can send your mix to different monitors. It would take too long to get into all the options there are in Studio One Pro but I will tell you it seem endless...so far there has been no technical issues...no lock ups etc...and I record 8 drum tracks at the same time. Bottom line: real easy to use and lots of options.Always check out your other options but this is truly a great system.I run mine on a Alienware computer running windows 7 with 6MB or Ram.

About 3 months ago I purchased Firestudio to anticipate building a recording studio. My aim was primarily vocal. So, simplicity was my target. Unfortunately, once I set up the Firestudio device I began to experience difficulty. Although I had read the warnings about using it with Windows 7 and the difficulty I would have with downloading the latest drivers, I never imagined that it would necessitate becoming a technician.The instructional booklet that came with the device was not easy to read. Even after many careful readings I found that the instructions left out a great deal of detail to get it working. In addition to that downloading the required software was a challenge in itself. Presonus does feature a forum in which one can gripe and get responses. But it took me a long time to master the very basics of recording.Phase 2 began with the firewire. I experience extensive mic crackle and static. It took a long time to resolve this, requiring me to purchase an additional firewire cord. (Had to go with a 6 pin to 9 pin without an adapter) Luckily for me, there was such a thing. I had taken the advice of technical garus who insisted that Apple was the way to go. So, I invested another $900 on an Apple. Now the system works more or less the way I want it to. But I can tell you that it took a lot of toil.Should you buy it? That depends on your degree of expertise and willingness to do research. I can honestly say that once you get everything working the right way, the sound is awesome.

This company has to have the WORST support ever. Barely better than NONE.I have been in contact with them both by e-mail and through the support forum for over 3 MONTHS and still cannot get anything to play back through this junk.Here's how it's been:1)You open a support ticket and WAIT. They claim a maximum response time of 48 hours. My first response from them was 3 weeks later, and only after daily e-mails to them.2) They gave there first response - typical lame suggestions (is it plugged in, did you load the drivers, check firmware version, is the volume control turned up (Really?), etc.3) I responded that I checked all that and so what should I do next?4) About 4 days later, I was asked to check some more stuff (some of which they told me to check the first time. No response for about a week. Bumped the response a few times - no reply5) Opened another support ticket - was told that having more than one ticket open can SLOW THINGS DOWN! You mean they could get SLOWER?? WOW!!6) Just to make sure it wasn't an incompatibility with my computer, I uninstalled the software, and then installed it on 2 other machines, each with a different version of WIndows (Vista, Xp). Same results. Told tech support this and received no response.\7) So we went back and forth since then, with typically 3-7 days wait for each response (of which none helped)8) They have not answered my repeated requests since 3 weeks ago - apparently they have NO IDEA how to get this thing to work.So to date, I'm stuck with a $500.00 paperweight, with little or no hope of ever getting it to work.If you need further convincing - check their Tech Support Forums.

If you're reading this, chances are you have done your homework as I did in searching for a preamplifier/interface for your DAW recording rig. I'm not going to go through all the feature of this Presonus, but just mention a couple:-If you are only going to be recording 1 or 2 mics at a time, get another interface. There's LOTS of great 1 and 2 input preamps out there.I got this because I needed 8 mics on my drum kit, or thought I might try recording my band live.-This has eight inputs on the front with the first two capable of accepting mic or 1/4 inch plugs from a guitar, bass, or keyboard. I use that first input a LOT! I use the other 7 only when recording the drums.- This PreSonus is VERY clean sounding, imparting NO sound of its own. This is both a good and bad aspect of the unit. Many engineers want a color, a particular sound imparted to their recording that some preamps give. Other engineers want NO color, but will try and add it later. I'm quite happy with no sound coloring.I have had my Firestudio for almost a year with NO problems once I got the drivers installed and the kinks worked out in the first couple days of its arrival. Only one call to PreSonus did the trick. I can't say they were all that nice to me, but they did their job and helped. I think PreSonus gets a bad rap from many reviewers and writers on audio forums simply because it's the UNhappy buyers that do the writing. Happy buyers don't write. MOST of the bad reviews I've read regarding this unit have been from folks that simply have not taken the time to make sure their computer is a good match with this unit. Period!Do your homework before buying. I did and haven't looked back.
