Pros: The Plustek OpticBook A300 scanner, like the Plustek OpticBook 3600 Plus I owned before it, functioned for 13 months, just long enough for the one-year warranty to expire. Then the CIS Module (i.e., the light source) failed.Cons: I had heard Plustek's customer service is poor and my experience confirmed this. First, a Plustek representative attempted to charge me $400 to replace the scanner light source, a component that costs less than $200. When I requested the name of the third-party manufacturer of the scanner light source so I could order the part directly, the Plustek representative refused to share this information. When I asked to speak with a supervisor, the Plustek representative informed me that the Plustek General Manager was too busy to speak with me. So I threw the Plustek OpticBook A300 in the garbage and opted for a much smarter and affordable book scanning solution.I advise everyone reading this review not to make my mistake: do not waste your time or money on this or other overpriced, unreliable Plustek scanners.I have since assembled a DIY book scanner based on Daniel Reetz's Open Hardware specifications. The DIY book scanner far, far outperforms the Plustek Opticbook A300 and does so for a small fraction of A300's price. Google it!

I work in a office that has four of these, two are 3600s and the others are the Plus. I have used the original 3600 for seven years and it has worked flawlessly. I urge people to read the manual if they complain about slow scanning. I cannot turn pages fast enough and the one I use has scanned ten thousand pages in seven years. In our office, we scan each page as graphic file then use Acrobat to assemble as a PDF. The OCR program is crippleware, but you cannot expect full OCR for $250.00! Read the manual, customize the buttons on the scanner and set your preferences for b&W, greyscale and color scanning and you can scan all day as fast as you can turn pages. You can set it to auto descreen, auto rotate and auto OCR. Because of our experience with the 3600 and the 3600 Plus, our organization has purchased several more of these.

Ужасно

Strictly speaking, as a scanner it is working just fine. As a "Book Scanner" [the novel feature it is marketed for], this thing is lacking. It does not actually scan up to the edge, as advertised. Hence, I am finding that I can have the book spine right where it is supposed to be, yet I am having my paragraphs truncated by about five or six characters. The software alignment has proven worthless, here, and I can find no place to adjust it on the physical scanner body [not that I was ever expecting to, or to have to].Short story, I bought this about three years ago [if that]. Seemed to work fine, though [like an idiot] I failed to do any extensive testing, and I needed to put it away, essentially into safe storage most of this time. I just got it back out tonight, set it up with a new machine, and with some of my books it is not doing what it is supposed to be doing. It's not doing what I bought it for, and what it is advertised to do. This weird, serious problem was not mentioned, when I payed out the cash [a rather substantial amount, for a scanner], and I feel cheated. I was going to start scanning my library of books, and was kind of excited to get started. This is a letdown. It looks like I got suckered into buying an over priced scanner, under the pretext that it would fulfill a unique need [which my other three scanners cant do].

I liked this scanner so much that I bought a second one. (Note: I did not buy the "Plus" version, which only adds the ability to save directly to PDF. I bought my scanners before the Plus version became available. The software that came with my scanners does create PDFs as well, but not "directly." I'm not sure if the direct-to-PDF feature is worth the extra $30 or $40; it may be if it generates higher quality PDFs with smaller file sizes.) I've had both for more than three years. I've installed them on both Windows XP and Windows 2000 (English and Japanese versions). I have never had a scanner install and work so flawlessly. Despite what some of the other reviews say, I have found the software to be stable and totally crash-free. Previously I have used Epson and HP scanners, and in my opinion the OpticBook 3600 offers comparable scan quality with software that is more innovative and less intrusive, if primitive looking in spots. The software does what it's supposed to. Most notably, it allows you to scan each page of a book with just a touch of a button on the scanner, automatically rotating every other scan if you so specify in the settings. My scanners came with a light version of Abbyy's FineReader OCR software. I purchased an upgrade to the professional version for $100 or $150 (a free trial is available on Abbyy's web site), and I have found it to be excellent (well worth the price of the upgrade). I chose Abbyy over OmniPage because the latter doesn't provide a trial version (to my knowledge) and its activation policy struck me as too intrusive. One issue that I've had is that occasionally the scanner lamp inexplicably fails to turn on after the warm-up. This usually happens when I haven't used the scanner in a while, and the lamp always comes on after a reboot (once it took a couple of reboots). Scary the first time it happened, just a minor annoyance thereafter.Overall, a very well designed product. If you have any need to scan books, I think you will be impressed with the innovation that went into this scanner and its software. There's nothing comparable available that I've been able to find. One word of warning. After I bought these scanners I bought an HP Photosmart all-in-one color printer/scanner/copier. When I installed the HP, I found that the OpticBook no longer worked. I eventually figured out that I could use the OpticBook again if I disabled the HP under Imaging Devices in Device Manager. However, even when enabled under Device Manager the HP will not work as a scanner with the OpticBook installed (it only works as a printer). I really only needed a printer anyway, and I've found the HP software to be so intrusive, bloated and annoying that I've vowed to avoid all-in-ones from now on. As soon as I get a chance, I'm going back to my trusty HP LaserJet, which has the added advantage of not prompting me to buy color ink cartridges every time I blink. Finally, if you don't like this scanner, you might have to spring for one by a company called Kirtas. Watch this demo - it's a little scary:[...]

I have a small publishing operation (Norton Creek Press) that brings great-but-forgotten books back into print. Sometimes this involves scanning in rare or collectible books that would be damaged if I opened them all the way to make them lie flat on an ordinary scanner. The Plustek Opticbook 3600 lets me scan such books without damaging them.I've used it hard for a couple of weeks, and I've been very happy with it. The Abbyy software that comes with the scanner is much better than the stuff I used to use (scanning in grayscale also seems to help), and upgrading to FineReader 9.0 makes it even better. The Digibook software is sort of lame, sometimes hanging after scanning 100 pages or so, but I haven't had any trouble when scanning directly into the Abbyy software. Even when Digibook hangs, nothing is lost, because it saves every scan as a separate bitmap image anyway, even if you tell it not to. Select 'em all and suck 'em into the Abbyy OCR software. No problemo.I find it useful to be able to scan by pushing a button on the scanner, rather than reaching across to the mouse. I can hold the book in position with both hands and hit the button with my thumb. All in all, this scanner would be a bargain for my specialized needs at twice the price, and I'm very glad I bought it.

A nice fast scanner, it can scan a page in under 10 seconds. I was able to scan a 400 page book in just over an hour. Not bad!BUT... and this is the killer for me... paperback ("mass market edition") books don't scan very well because the print normally goes all the way to the spine. If you don't mind destroying your book (cracking the spine) then you might be able to do it but I like to keep my books in good condition. This made the scanner useless for my needs. The "edge" of this "edge scanner" scanning plate isn't quite at the edge of the machine; there's a good lip, which also prevents close scanning of paperback text close to the spine. The OCR software is relatively accurate; it gets confused by large fonts (eg what you sometimes see at the beginning of a chapter) and by fancy headers/footers, but overall not bad.

After reading the other reviews, I thought I would give my 2 cents.I could not use the software on my Windows 2003 server, so use it on another computer a Windows XP Pro that I dedicated just for the scanner.I scan large books about 500 pages on average, but I use the quick scan mode and save directly to tif, then edit, crop etc in another photo software and then make into pdf. I have never experienced an error while scanning but; I noticed that I need to reboot before starting each scan session after the software has been idle for a real long period of time. This is a FAST scanner from comparing it to others. As long as the book is in the perfect condition for scanning (not falling apart or binding too tight with text close to the spine) I can scan it in about an hour. Smaller size books, about 6x8 I can scan in about 20 minutes for a couple hundred pages because you can remove it from the glass as it passes the book. I am MORE then happy with the speed.I was going to buy one of these for a gift, but I know he uses Windows Vista and have decided to look elsewhere for him after reading these reviews.Too bad though, because this is a GREAT fast scanner! If it worked well with other operating systems, I can think of at least 3 or 4 people I would buy one for.Great with XP though ---

If you read other reviews saying the software is unstable, DO BELIEVE THEM. I took my chances and bought it anyway. I found out they were right. You can (and should) consider purchasing some other software and just leaving the CDs in the box (except the driver). I have a lot of thick books to scan (500-2000 pages each) and I'd say the software crashes at least 3 to 5 times per book (and that was AFTER installing the patch from the web site - it was much worse with the version in the box). About once every thousand pages, the software crashes and gets corrupted to the point where you have to completely uninstall it and the reinstall it. Sometimes, even that doesn't do the trick and you have to know how to clean it out of the registry (NOT for the novice Windows user). The company does offer a clean-up utility to get it out of the registry but I found I still had to do it manually a few times. This is NOT acceptable and very discouraging. Find some other software and factor its price into the cost of this scanner when making your decision to buy. Now, as for the scanner itself... decent considering the cost (not a lot of other book scanners in this price range). Don't expect every page to be perfectly straight the first time (I learned to live with it) but the clarity is good. The file sizes will add up, especially when you convert to a PDF. The PDF stores each page as a graphic (picture) and you cannot select and copy text as you might expect. I tried using the OCR feature that comes with it but found it did not do a perfect job of interpreting the graphic into text. What's more, if you try to use OCR your PDF won't look like the book. Overall, buy it if you intend to use 3rd party software.

I purchased a Opticbook 3600 plus. Works "ok" with XP, but the drivers will not initialize on my Vista laptop. I even took the scanner and laptop into a computer shop and they tried to get it to run on a newly installed Vista system with ZERO success. Calls to the service center go unreturned, and email is not answered. I find it hard to believe Plustek cannot get their scanner to work on Vista, or find a service center in the US that knows the meaning of SERVICE !!

For books, this scanner is awesome - faster than my Epson and my Canon all-in-one. On the other hand, the Epson works much better on photos, and the Canon is best for quick scan to email or to make copies. Mine came with Vista drivers, no problem there. The software, however, is another story. "It sucks" is being kind. One of the programs wouldn't even install (I tried on both my XP and Vista machines)and another crashes every hundred pages or so - no help on the website for the software either. Figure on purchasing some OCR software (Abbyy Finereader $400 or Omnipage $450) to get full use of the scanner.

I was a big fan of this scanner until recently.Opticbook scans books fast without damaging spines.I used it very carefully.I used another scanner of mine for non-book materials, because I didn't want to waste the lamp life. The result? The lamp died after around 200 scans!I used it intermittently, so I was out of warranty when the lamp died.I've used scanners of several manufacturers, and this is the first time that a scanner lamp died on me.In sum, $300 for 200 scans is not recommendable at all.Added: I got another reason to hate this scanner. Service of the company is horrible. I sent several emails about my problem, but never got answers.

The scanner is good the service s.........s The Plustek company doesn't understand that good scanner + bad service = bad scanner.I can only imagin what will be my fate if the scanner will for some reason- stop working. In this case my friend turn your plustek 3600 plus into a nice cofee table... I am looking for another scanner....
