I have had a few AVCHD camcorders over the years and comparing them to this camera things have steadily been getting better. The camera that I had before this one was a Panasonic V700.The X920 is about 25% larger but this doesn't bother me as it seems to get me a better grip. The screen is higher resolution and looks good to me. Both cameras have a similar menu system on the touchscreen that isn't the easiest or most intuitive to use. Things like having to hold your finger on the screen to enable optical image stabilizer lock over a physical button that you could press seem to induce more shake because I have to mess with the screen to hit a button and hold my other hand up there. A momentary or switched physical button would have made more sense to me. The physical ring is nice and you get a physical button to change its function. You can press the camera function button to cycle through and pick what you want turning the ring to accomplish. You can zoom, focus, adjust white balance, shutter speeds, and iris adjustments.There is an on screen level that I find very useful for keeping the camera level while you are shooting. It shows horizontal and vertical tilt amounts and turn colors based on how severely off you are. I find myself looking at the guide a lot to keep things aligned properly.The camera seems to like to use up the battery fairly quickly. I stuck a 128GB SD card in my camera and had over 11 hours of available recording space if I remember correctly. So I think it is safe to say you are going to need a few extra batteries (or larger capacity batteries) depending on how long you want to record.The picture quality of the X920 is improved, especially in lower light. The V700 was pretty good in lower light in my opinion but the X920 is better with less noise, better colors, and more detail. The sound is also improved by recording 5.1 channel audio over the standard 2 channel. They also give you a shoe adapter and mic and headphone jacks for using an external stereo mic and monitor.I messed around with the time lapse function and found that to be easy to use. I made a nice time lapse video with the camera pointed at the hill out back before and during a recent snowfall. It produced a very nice video that was neat to watch.I have mixed feelings about the Wi-Fi functions of this camera. It wasn't hard to set up but in use the camera is very slow to connect to my router. I was able to stream to my PC but unable to directly access the files to copy them to my PC over the Wi-Fi which would have been nice. I was able to do a live stream on the Internet and it didn't look bad. Using my cell phone as a viewfinder and remote worked but the live video and controls seemed laggy to me. Overall the Wi-Fi functions feel slow and clumsy to me so I don't think I will be using them often. Hopefully on future models these functions will improve and become more responsive. I feel that they should have included a physical remote because their Wi-Fi features still have a ways to go before they are what I would consider mature and robust.I am a just pick it up and use it kind of guy when it comes to making home videos. I don't want to be screwing around with my camera endlessly. I just want to grab the camera on a whim and make some decent home videos to capture an event or outing and be able to share them with my kids when they get older or play back video for myself to bring back the memory of the recorded event. So it is important that the camera can just be turned on and record some quality video. Overall I think the camera does pretty well when left to its own devices in the iA mode. The video and audio quality are improved over my other cameras and impressive when played back on your PC or TV. Overall this is a camera that I enjoy using and would recommend.

Wow, this camera has a ton of features and the video it shoots is excellent quality. It is highly customizable from fully automatic to setting most things yourself. You will definitely need to read the expanded advanced manual to see everything that this camera can do. I’ve seen other reviewers throw out the term “Prosumer”. This is a perfect term for describing the type of user that this camera is perfect for. The user who is in between professional and consumer and really likes to dig into the camera settings and customize everything in order to get the best possible video. We haven’t found anything we wanted to be able to do that this camera doesn’t have. And the video still blows us away every time we watch it on our 55 inch high def TV.I recognized a lot of the settings and features when I saw them through the setup screens. Others I had to look up in the manual. I like the intelligent Auto setting a lot. I think I will use that one most of the time. Manual focus with the ring is going to be cool for creative videos.Notes:- There are two versions of the manual. The basic 36 page one, and the advanced 200 page one. I also recommend downloading the advanced one and reading it before you buy the camera. This will tell you everything.- This is the HC-X920. Then manual is also for the HC-X920M. The M version has built in memory one. This model does not. It will only work with and SD card (not included). Anything in the manual the refers to built-in memory does not apply to this model.- Viewfinder was blurry when I looked into it. There is a dial on the left of the extended viewfinder to focus it.- DNLA mode is really nice. Once you have Wi-Fi setup, you can put the camera in DNLA server mode. Then other devices can connect and play the videos stored on the camera. I was able to play them using media player on my Windows 7 PC. My Blu-ray player could connect, but didn’t recognize the video format. They must be able to play AVCHD 60fps files- Software installed easily. It said it was going to take 15 to 30 minutes but it only took a couple. It spend 2 minutes checking out my PC then installed really fast. It is easy to use and knows what videos have been transferred from the camera/SD Card. It works with camera hooked up, or just SD card inserted into a reader. It will catalog all your pictures and videos, not just the ones from this camera.- The power button is kind of in a weird position. It is under the flip out screen and way in the front and not that well marked. But the camera also turns on and off when you open and close the LCD Monitor, or extend and retract the viewfinder. So I stopped using the power button at all. I actually like the other methods a lot.- Creative Recording mode includes: Miniature Effect, 8mm movie, Silent Movie, and Time Lapse.- This camera supports connecting an external hard drive and dumping the videos to it. The hard drives that are supported are listed and there are not a lot. They must also be formatted just right. For me, it was so much easier to use the PC to transfer videos.- This unit has an excellent LCD touch screen monitor and a viewfinder. At first I didn't think I'd use the viewfinder but I find that I am.- I had not problems connecting to my Wi-Fi- Take still photos and has a built in flash. You can extract still photos from the videos as well.- There is a 3D add on lens you can buy.- This camera has a lot of settings that can be done manually. Focus and White Balance included. When set to Autofocus, you use the manual ring around the lens to focus.- As shipped, the battery charges inside the camera. You attached the power cord to the camera. An extra battery and stand-alone charger will probably be needed.- The Zoom button is also controls the volume for on camera playback.- Image stabilization is amazing.

My very first camcorder was a Panasonic, which included a miniDV tape many years back. I captured many good memories since my first child was born. I decided to choose that particular model based on my research at that time, and I was happy with it. Now many years have passed and the has technology evolved significantly. There are so many things I have to compare and research to get the right one. And this particular model surprisingly exceeded my needs and expectations.First, the image quality is simply fantastic. Whether shooting under the bright day light or dim night light, there are plenty of details in the vast dynamic ranges of colors. I was pleased with how sharp the images are and even at 12x optical zoom; the images were still very sharp. Because this newer model has slightly bigger sensor than the previous model, I assume, the result in the overall image quality is pleasingly good. Also, the optical stabilizer works really well even at 12x zoom; it makes me unafraid of shooting things from a distance. These key things in the camcorder are essential but often many consumer models don't perform well due to the sensor size and digital (not optical) image stabilization.The embedded WIFI feature is something trendy for any kind of device these days, but it might not be too easy to make it user friendly and actually work practically. The X920 offers one as well and also supports mobile device pairing. Initially the WIFI viewing and WIFI remote controlling worked fine. But repeatedly it lost signals, and I had to reconnect over and over. Once the connection was established, controlling and viewing were no problem, and it was quite convenient, yet, I have to say it was not the most user friendly and practical to pair and shoot. I have not tried broadcasting via Ustream because one, I had to go through creating a separate account at Panasonic along with the existing Ustream account. And, two, broadcasting via Ustream requires a faster uploading speed, and I did not think my 1mbp up was sufficient. But for those with higher internet connection and self broadcasting business, I am sure this would do the great job.There are also many things I liked about this camcorder. The buttons are conveniently positioned and well functioning. The touch screen is working well despite my concerns about lagging (there is a slight lag). Many ports including 3.5mm microphone and headphone, HDMI, and AV ports are very useful, and they all worked great.The OVF is the only thing I wasn't fond of from this camcorder. It does not look terrible, but it's not great either. Plus the non articulating viewfinder is slightly awkward to use. In my opinion Sony's OVF in their camera line is the best among cameras and camcorders.Overall, this is simply superb camcorder for prosumers and high end daddy shooters. If you don’t need some professional options like XLR and extra adjustment rings, but you want to have the superb image quality without spending over 1K+, this would do the great job. Nobody knows how soon the 4K camcorder market will be available for the majority of consumers at an affordable price range, so for now, this is probably the top choice for 1080 60P for the prosumers unless you go with the GH4. I thought the consumer camcorder market was dying since smart phones and tablets became widely available, but I slowly am realizing that my iPhone won't replace the camcorder after the many trial errors. Kids' school events, sporting events, friend's recital, and many other events in one's life require longer recording time, great zooming ability, and great image stabilization. And, most of all from what this camcorder has to offer, the unbeatable image quality in low light situations--weirdly many life events happen at low light situation--is the top reason to consider.

Overall, the Panny HC-X920 is a solid modern camcorder that will provide years of delightful use and preserve your treasured moments well into the future. However, it's a pricey unit that doesn't deliver perfect ease of use and could use more features.First the plusses:The physical size is perfect - it's neither too large nor small. Designed to fit right-handers just fine with its attached grip. It feels natural to slide your hand right through. The unit does not utilize a traditional lens cap that almost always would get lost in the first few days - the lens cap is built-in and automated so you never worry of a dirting the lens. Unit quality is high as typical with higher end Panny electronic products.The flip out screen will rotate and is a touchscreen based. It's a slight bit awkward using as a touchscreen because you might end up moving the screen around with your finger's weight. Not a real big deal and the ability to touch things on the screen makes it easier to use. The response is good so no real lag to it.Good optics - takes clear shots and indoor scenes are pretty good with good light gathering qualities. Very high marks on this. Makes 1080p video scenes very defined and pro looking.Downsides :The features are a little puzzling to use because everything is done on the screen and not through traditional dial buttons on the unit. This means it's hard to take a fast glance at what mode you're in. Unlike a dial where you can memorize what position it's at in a glance, on screen means you need to know what the little icon represents. There's a "help" function to identify what the icon is but it's awkward to use and slow in response. What this means is that you'll often be puzzled as to what shooting mode you're in and how to move around. Could use a good amount of revision to make this unit more user friendly.Does not have a 24p mode to create cool motion picture-like scenes. I find no way to do it at all. Puzzling, since even my phone video recorder has a mode for this !Not possible to add any external lenses, typical with other consumer camcorders though.No hot-shoe clip for an external mic setup, which is vitally needed to create pro quality scenes.No internal memory OR a second SD slot. Some internal memory would be nice as it would ensure you can record something if you forget to take your card out of your reader on your computer. OR better yet, why not a 2nd SD slot? Seriously, how much extra money would it cost for the manufacturer to do this? Two dollars?Could offer higher quality captures - 1080p is a bit dated these days. Future proofing would've been nice.Aside from that, there is a wifi capability mode that I had no interest in. Transfering videos would just be too slow. So much easier to just pop the card out and read it on a USB3 reader. We're talking about gigabytes of data here folks.. There's a function to turn the camera into a network security-camera like. It worked very slowly and clunky such that I found little use for it. So much easier to just my Dlink indoor IP cam.There's also a still shot mode. I tried it and it produces okay quality pics. Way better than any cell phone camera, even those new high end Galaxy phones, but lacks behind the quality of a DSLR or even a mirrorless camera design.Overall, I'd say the unit is pretty good but doesn't quite jump out at me screaming "this is the a solid deal". Your typical DSLR today (very cheap now) can do videos just as good. I sometimes think camcorder designers forget this to be true these days. For that reason, I'm just giving three stars as the price here is pretty steep. If this offered an easier interface and an option to recorder higher than 1080p, I'd raise that to 5 stars.

We own both the V720 and this camera, the X920. The X920 is a wonderful high-end camera. The operation of both cameras is highly customizable from fully automatic (iA) mode to fully manual mode (including focus, shutter speed, and white balance). There is an in-between mode that let’s you adjust things like white balance and color as well. The V720 is a very nice compact camera that will likely meet the needs of most consumers. The X920 is definitely a step up, however, and will give you more creative possibilities in the long run IF you intend to spend time fine tuning your photographic and videography skills. What is a novelty on the V720 becomes a true prosumer feature on the X920. The lens is a better system and does a much nicer job overall with clarity and color, and does a more sophisticated job in low-light conditions. The X920 also features a threaded lens cap area that accommodates the included lens hood (for keeping extraneous light out of your lens), and will also take a set of filters sold by Panasonic (and others). The built-in microphone is an improvement over the V720 as well. The surround sound produces decent results, and the wind screen works well. The camera also has a hot shoe for an external mic. Another feature is the ability to take good quality stills while filming. I haven't quite mastered this yet, so whenever I take a still the camera moves just a bit when I hit the shutter release button. Because of this I still prefer to extract stills from my video during processing. The X920 has the usual array of creative options (8mm, miniature, night time mode, fireworks, portrait, face recognition, smile trigger, color saturation., landscape, etc.) All are easily accessible by first pressing the iA button on the camera and then navigating the touch screen (which is very responsive, and has intuitive menu navigation). The larger LCD screen is a nice feature, and I especially like the viewfinder, which activates the camera when you pull it out.The X920 is about 25% heavier and bigger than the V720. It doesn't quite fit in my pocket like the V720 does, so it's not as easy to simply pick up and run out the door. I usually pair the X920 with my Nikon DSLR camera setup, and pair the V720 with my point and shoot camera.The quality of the video images taken with the X920 is very good. If you know how to use the feature set on the camera, the video quality could just about pass for a more expensive professional camera if you use the right filters and microphone setup.My only gripe so far with the camera is setting up the WiFi. The direct connection between my iPhone and the camera will not stick. The connection is dropped within a few seconds of connecting. I have not found a resolution for this yet. You do have the option to wirelessly pair the camera to your home network, but rather than enter the router's password, you need to find where on the router to enter the camera's special passcode. I haven't figured this out yet either but will update this post with a comment once I do.I would recommend that you download the User's Manual from Panasonic to make sure this camera is right for you. Does the extra bulk and decreased portability make sense for how you plan on using it? There is no doubt that this is a great camera that will serve the low-end prosumer well. It's quite a step up form the V720, but the V720 will be good for most people. The X920 is worth the extra money if you are more adventurous and want to invest in equipment as opposed to investing in a more casual video camera.

I've had the camera for nearly 2 weeks now. I purchased the HDC-TM300 way back in Feb 2010, and used it frequently; so, this was a significant upgrade for me. The performance of the camera is exceptional for a prosumer camcorder. I am an avid videographer who probably spends most of the time taking family videos, but also for anything that I might want to do that's more on the amatuer side of filmmaking such as thunderstorm lightning videography, nature, short guerilla documentaries, etc.I also purchased the following, which arrived with the camera:1)Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack) and Charger for Panasonic VW-VBN260 and Panasonic HC-X800, HC-X900, HC-X900M, HC-X910, HC-X920, HC-X920M, HDC-HS900, HDC-SD800, HDC-SD900, HDC-TM900 (2800mAh)2)SanDisk Extreme 64 GB SDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Flash Memory Card 45MB/s SDSDX-064G-X46You'll want the extra batteries, as well as an independent charger so that you don't have to charge on the camera. One thing nice about the Wasabi charger, is that it comes with both your standard AC outlet plug as well as a DC car charger connection.PROS:1. Incredible video! In normal light, this thing is simply amazing for the price. I paid less for this with the accessories above than I did for the TM300.2. 1080 60p - this combined with the video performance is why someone would upgrade from a TM300. It's just simply amazing the detail you'll see when replaying the video versus what you see while recording, such as a fly taking off or just cleaning itself. There's really no reason that I can find why I'd ever take it out of this setting.3. Low Light - much, much better than the TM300! If you're doing something like lightning videography, you'll want to use the autofocus, zoom in on a distance object using x12 or x40 and then set the camera to manual focus.4. Can be recording within about 3 seconds of flipping open the viewfinder5. Better camera-to-pc transfer software.6. Manual controls. Sure, they are slightly different, but you can easily access them by just hitting the small physical "Camera Function" button on the side near the lens as seen in the pic, versus using the touchscreen for everything.CONS:Viewfinder and LCD don't work at the same time. My kids love looking at themselves in the LCD while recording. On the TM300, I could use both the viewfinder and LCD screen at the same time. Apparently, that option is not available in the x920. I would just use the viewfinder to keep them in frame so as not to have to look in front of the camera and potentially get into the shot.I've messed with most other settings on this camera; especially, in manual.Haven't used:-WI-FIGeneral Review:For those complaining about the manual controls or autocontrols, it's more important to know when and how to use them then to throw up a bunch of videos that show the camera not being used correctly, and then expecting some miraculous behavior from auto-settings.Both manual and auto controls work very well. It's like any other camera outside of the $200 range; If you want to learn to really take advantage of the full capabilities, you'll need to mess around with the settings and actually practice using them in the right scenarios.I often use manual white balance controls instead of the auto, because it's so quick that it will adjust to lighting in a room if I go from panning at something with light in the room, past a window, to a different light source in a different room.I was initially contemplating the idea of getting a GH3, but the ol budget wouldn't allow for it at this time. I hadn't even looked into this camera until about 2 weeks before purchasing. I'm really glad I purchased this camera.UPDATE: 5/22/14 - Use this camera regularly. Have not ran into any significant problems. I still mostly run and gun in full auto for family vids. I always keep one battery on the charger and one on the camera. Battery life is between 1.5-2 hours still. I've since picked up two of the Dolica ST-500 68-Inch Lightweight Tripods that you can find on amazon at $24.99. I keep one in the house and one in the car. I would still highly recommend this camera for anyone upgrading from something like a TM300. Great upgrade. The detail in the video is quite amazing. Stability is much better than TM300.

This is by far the best camcorder that I have ever owned or manipulated. The video quality is broadcast quality, at least to my eyes. Something that impressed me the must is the quality of the video under very low light conditions. I have used this camcorder a lot during these last holidays indoors, and the color reproduction and video detail is superb. Other reviewers had complained about the LCD screen not showing the controls when flipped towards the target. This should not be an issue if you don't do a lot of talking head selfies. The location of the USB and HDMI ports on the left side of camera body is not inconvenient considering that during video playing or transfer is not an inconvenience to have the LCD screen open 90deg. On the negative side I do have to mention that the wireless features do not work that great, at least with my Motorola HD MAXX Android phone. The live video feature + control and home surveillance app do not work well, with no real-time video, and video frozen up constantly. The wireless (WIFI) video play back does work good and I'm able to play videos from the camera on my Android phone over WIFI. The DLNA feature also works good with my LG SmartTV. Overall I'll give this camera a 5/5 score if not for some glitches with some of the WIFI apps that it has.Pros:- It has a viewfinder which is very useful for sunny day recordings.- Video quality is superb! (Even with the 'low quality' or lower Mbps recording settings)- Low light video recording is excellent at least for my non-professional videographer standards.- Camera construction (case) feels well made with fine plastics. The camera feels/looks expensive to both sight and touch.- The camera has a built in flash for taking pictures.- Camera setup screens and features are easy enough to navigate and figure out thanks to a built-in help feature.- Camera menus have big fonts, making them very easy to read.- Camera stabilization feature does wonders when filming while walking or zooming in.- Camera level indicator and correction also is a great feature helping to keep the horizon "Horizontal".- It has an automatic lens cover shutter.- Adjustment ring around the lens is awesome for manual focus, zoom and iris control.- Editing software is easy to use, but is has a negative (read cons).- Videos can be transferred to a USB external HDD without a PC in-line.- At $738.00 it feels like a good value over quality ratio. True that you will find cheaper HD cameras out there, but this one is loaded with every bell and whistle features, plus superb video quality. At least I don't feel buyer's remorse.Cons:- Wireless (WIFI) feature for home surveillance and real-time video feedback and camera control does not work well with Android phone. ( no opinion on how it may work with Apple phones). App on the phone when it 'works" only shows sporadic video frames and the camera controls really are unresponsive.- No IR remote control. The smartphone remote control app doesn't work as it should. You will end up sitting on the floor next to your entertainment center while playing the videos directly from the camera to your audience.- Included Windows software even though it is easy to use it doesn't allow you to transcode the video. I ended up having to use Pinnacle Studio 14 editing software in order to convert my edited videos to MP4. (MP4 format plays better on my TV set over WIFI DLNA.)- The camera doesn't record natively in MP4. it does have the capability of transcoding to MP4 from the unit itself without a PC though. It does record natively in iframe format for MAC users.

First, I must admit that I didn't purchase my X920 from Amazon, due to the sales tax being applied to the final cost. I'm a long time purchaser from Amazon and a longtime Amazon Prime Member. I purchased from another business, without sales tax, and it included free shipping.Now on to my review:Although I've only had my X920 for a few weeks, I'm very pleased with its performance! This camcorder is replacing a years old Cannon HF100 consumer camcorder.So far I shot a few youth basketball games in a well lit gym, and a couple of church services, and I was very satisfied. I adjusted a few settings for color/saturation, exposure. I used the onboard mic set at 5.1, and I was pleased with the results. I shot a few outside scenes and again, pleased with the results. Although with the sun shining brightly, it was near impossible for me to see and use the LCD. Maybe it was due to my own eyesight. LOL. Thankfully, the X920 has a view finder! Image stabilization is very good! Also, very pleased with the lowlight performance just goofing around in my home. Much better than my old HF100.The zoom capability isn't as long as other camcorders, but I'm fine with the zoom capabilities of my X920 none the less. I found the wireless function easy to setup and use for remote control use via my iPhone. I've no idea if I'll be using that functionality much, but its good to have if I need it.I already have a Panasonic AC-90 camcorder, which I will do a few two-camera tests along with the X920. I know that I'll have to do a few tweaks to matchup these two cameras.Be sure to purchase more batteries along with a stand-alone AC battery charger. The X920 does not come with a stand-alone AC battery charger. Although you can charge the battery while it's docked on the X920 by the AC power cord charger which comes with the X920, and it comes with a car charger. But Panasonic, why not include an AC stand-alone battery charger??? I also purchased an OEM Panasonic VW-VBN260 2500mAh extended battery, and two knockoff extended batteries which came with an AC battery charger from Amazon. The cheap batts work just fine so far, as does the AC battery charger, which can also charge the OEM batteries for the X920. Although I'm sure the cheapo batts will gradually lose their power of longevity use over time. By the way, the extended batteries, both the OEM and cheap batteries, take at least 4 hours to fully charge. Possibly longer.All in all, very satisfied my X920, although the price was more than I wanted to spend. But I wanted good performance, especially in low light. And if you want good performance from a camcorder, most times you have to pay a higher price. A few items I bought besides the extra batteries, were some more 64GB & 32GB SDHC/SDXC cards, a UV lens for the protection of the X920's lens, a lens hood (Mennon 16:9 Screw Mount Rectangular Wide Angle Lens), and a wide angle lens (Digital King DSW Pro 0.7x AF Wide Angle Conversion Lens). I'm looking at buying another external boom mic, possibly the Rode VideoMic Pro and/or the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro. I also just purchased from Amazon the Mantis Folding Rig by Fotodiox. All in all, I'm very pleased with the purchase of my HC-X920!
