Through Astronomers Without Borders we just installed East Africa's first dedicated astronomical observatory in rural Tanzania! The telescope is operated by a 12V car battery which is continuously charged by this unit. I spent days in research before heading to Tanzania, making certain I could find a unit that could receive 240V in and be connected to a battery while in operation. It worked flawlessly. We even mounted the charge on the wall so that the unit was out of the way, and less likely to get bumped when observing the night sky.

I've purchased 5 of the Optimate 5 charger/maintainer units. Sadly I've had to return 4 of them. The 1 unit that was not defective has maintained my car and motorcycle batteries for 4 flawless years. I don't know what has gone wrong with Tecmate's quality control, but it has been a huge pain for both me and Amazon's return department. I just purchased 2 of the chargers in mid March 2020 and both of them will not cycle into maintain mode. They are supposed to cycle every 30 minutes from test mode to maintain mode. The whole purpose of a charger is to be able to supply a float charge to the battery. I guess it's time to look for a more reliable charger.

Followed the directions to a T. This did nothing to tend a car battery in a car that was not driven and stayed in a garage for 2 months. It also did not recharge the almost drained battery in my car when I accidentally left an interior light on overnight. The console lights still flickered and the starter clicked when attempting to start the car, so the battery was not fully drained. So far this has been a useless product for us. Both of the batteries were still within their lifespan. Had to jump the battery on my car and replace the battery in the car that was not driven.

The OptiMate 5 is hands down the best battery maintainer money can buy. I have had this now for about 6 months and every time I want to ride my motorcycle, I CAN!
Gone are the days where I would go to start my bike and hear the ubiquitous clicking noise. I used to have the itch to go ride and then I'd have to charge up the battery and by then, I didn't want to ride anymore. This was the best purchase I have made in a while, as it has directly resulted in more riding time and absolutely ZERO hassle.
This maintainer DOES NOT CHARGE YOUR DEAD BATTERY! It was not intended to do that. It just cycles the battery and keeps it topped off. You must charge your battery prior to plugging this in.
I highly recommend you get multiple pigtails to hook up to all your outdoor toys/tools and you can then keep all of your items fully charged!
I have been very impressed with the way this works. It doesn't make any noise like other battery chargers I have used in the past, it won't cause thermal runaway and it has brought back several of my batteries from the dead after a short charge from my main battery charger. I have even refreshed a 12 year old Harley battery with this thing.
Imagine the money saved over the years, imagine riding your bike whenever you please.
Buy one of these and stop dreaming!

This the 3rd OptiMate I have purchased. I have an old OptiMate for my Motorcycle. I've that one for 10 years +. It has always performed well. I purchased my first OptiMate 5 for work to charge gel batteries on Electric Hydraulic Lift tables. The chargers that are attached to these will not charge the battery if the level gets too low. I am positive that these batteries were replaced prematurely in the past because of the lousy chargers.
The OptiMate 5 recovered them in less than 24 hours. I purchased the 2nd OptiMate 5 for my Mazda MX-5 Miata to keep the battery charge during the winter months.

This lil guy is great for medium/small battery charging and maintenance. I had a Paul C Buff Vagabond II battery pack system that sat around way too long...(my fault) and I tested the battery which barely registered a charge. This charger brought it back to almost full capacity! Takes awhile to cycle of course but safety comes to mind here.
Same thing with a tractor battery I thought was too far gone. Now I maintain those with the trickle charger.

After swapping out a 6-year-old battery in our car, I tried recovering the old one with a maintenance charger, to no avail. I then put the battery on this charger. After 24-hours the battery was back to its proper voltage and will be useful for the garden tractor, etc. Very happy with the performance of this device.

Really like this battery charger. Got it to replace my OptiMate 3+ battery charger after it couldn't charge the battery. I have used this charger on batteries that are 5+ years old and they are at 93% capacity. As batteries get older, you can't charge them as well, but with OptiMate chargers you can use them for a very long time. I have a couple of bikes and these chargers typically last 2-3 years.

I got the OptiMate 5 charger with the 15' extension and Weatherproof Permanent lead through Amazon about 1 1/2 months ago. I Had a smaller older one that worked very well so wanted a second better one with a couple more benefits. It brought back a weak battery at least for a little bit longer and keeps my other batters charged at all times. I use for Generator and a lift I have and electric golf kart. I'm a contractor so not messing with dead batteries all the time now. Not for jump starting and fast charging but great for maintaining and long term . You can just leave it hooked up and not worry about it, but your battery will always be charged. There is a connector where you can connect 5 batteries to one charger at the same time too.

After unsuccessfully trying to charge 5 different deep cycle and motorcycle batteries, I had to send the charger back to TecMate. They checked it out and because it was faulty, sent me a new one. I used it on several batteries and never was able to get one to charge. I checked and the batteries all had water in them . These same batteries were always charging with no problems with my Battery Tender, but that got left out in the rain one evening thus the new purchase. After talking to the customer service at TecMate again, I was told to return it to the place of purchase. Luckily, after a detailed explanation of my experience, Amazon accepted the return with no original packaging and after 6 months of the purchase date. I ended up buying another Battery Tender after going without a charger all Summer. I would not recommend this charger to anybody. I was hoping to get a better charger with the desulphating feature and weather proof, but I ended up with a more expensive lemon...Twice. I'll stick with my B.T. and keep it covered overnight.

I purchased this product on Aug 15, 2015. It has performed very will. It was able to desulfate a battery but, unfortunately, the battery was too far gone and several cells were shorted out. It also recovered my car battery with great success. The unit gets warm when charging a battery as would be expected but it does not get hot. For a very compact unit it does it's job very well.
I do not often do reviews but this unit deserves my praise.

Took several tries to recover my battery. I had to remove it from the generator so it would work on this neglected battery but it finally accepted a charge and is now maintaining. The battery cost more than the charger. Another save. With this charger red does not mean dead. Keep trying.

After reading up on battery chargers this one has what you need to keep your batteries in TIP TOP SHAPE. I have used this charger all winter and I can say that my betteries (all 5 of them) now hold a charge longer and require less frequent charging.It's simple to use and safe and a great way to increase your battery life.

Made in China which might explain why the instructions on the box are different from the instructions in the manual. I have this and many other chargers/maintainers such as Schumacher Pro Series, Optima, Sears, Black and Decker, Duracell, and Battery Minder. I prefer the Battery Minder over the Optimate 5 I purchased because it desulfates effectively, is much less expensive than this product, and you can clearly understand what is going on by looking at the screen on the unit. The Battery Minder is also half the size of the Optimate if storage is an issue for you.

you have to read the amperage and not what the unit will do - a low amperage charger will not recover most batteries but the more expensive ones with higher amps probably will. This unit is extremely light and I don't know what is in there but it is not medium or even light duty. This unit wouldn't even recover/DE phosphate my lawn mower battery. The book isn't very easy to understand and you would think the display would allow you to push buttons or select something - you hook up and it starts doing something and lighting up whatever it is doing?
