Nokia was a good quality brand a few years back, but after changing hands so often, it has sadly just become a cheap Chinese smartphone with nowhere to go anymore, and Nokia needs to look at the market as they can make all there budget smartphones stand out from the crowd by adding in wireless charging and a much better camera lens without bumping up the price would give them a better marketing point when trying to sell their smartphones over some of the more prominent brands out there like Samsung and Apple
Daily usage from this smartphone is just average as I have noticed that the performance of this smartphone could have been better as I have found this to be slow when opening some apps and will lag when you have a few running in the background and hope this will get fixed with a few more software updates that come out soon and the battery life lasts all day but depends on what apps you have running as I use this smartphone with delivery apps that can kill even the best smartphones out there but for web browsing and checking emails will last a day or two if the screen is not on all the time
The screen on this smartphone is impressive for just being 720p but would have been better if they used a 1080p display as I can't see it costing much more than the one they are already using
The camera on this smartphone is a big let-down as it really struggles to take any decent photos in low light and is terrible at taking half-decent photos when using during the day compared to a smartphone from other brands that cost around the same price, so would not solely buy this smartphone to use as a cheap camera.
Unboxing experience - The phone is nicely presented in its slide open box with a google sticker pointing to the power button to get going. It comes with its black charging brick and usb c charging cable also. This is a slow charger at 5W so if you have a 10W or above charger lying around use that instead. No case or earphones included.
Specs : Screen - IPS LCD 400 nits
Size - 6.39 inches.
Resolution - 720 x 1560 pixels (269 ppi).
CPU & Chipset - Qualcomm Snapdragon 460, Octa-Core.
GPU - Adreno 610.
Camera - 13MP Wide, 5MP Ultrwide and 2MP depth.
Security - Facial scanner and rear mounted finger print reader.
Battery - 4,000 mAh.
Storage - 32GB with expandable micro usb.
Setup - The setup process was super simple, I just added my google account and all of my google settings synced across to the device. I then setup my fingerprint scanner and updated all of my apps to the latest versions. Setup was a breeze. If you are coming from iPhone there is also an option of transferring your data across using an app.
Software - It comes with Android One installed out of the box and this is a minimal Android stock experience. It’s clean, bloatware free and clean looking. I really enjoy the user experience. Android 11 will be available on this phone at some point also according to Nokia and the box that states its Android 11 ready, time will tell.
Daily usage/Performance - The phone performs average overall. There is a lot of noticeable stutters and lag when app switching and this is especially noticeable if you have a lot of apps running in the background. For the price point it is to be expected and it’s more than capable of browsing social media and watching content but not so much for gaming. The battery life lasts all day also which is fantastic. Another plus is the screen, for the price it really is a nice panel and because of it being LCD it saves a lot of battery. The auto brightness works fine.
Screen - this has a 720p HD+ panel that gets pretty bright and is perfectly usable for YouTube and media apps. The viewing angles can struggle at times if looking at it from an angle but from holding the phone normally straight on it’s a nice LCD panel that does the job just as expected.
Camera - this is a downfall of this device, it really struggles to take any decent images and it’s pretty much unusable for low light photos. Don’t buy this phone solely for the camera alone. It’ll take the odd snap ok but nothing crystal clear.
Summary - Overall this is a budget Android one device and it lacks a lot of the bells and whistles of the flagship devices out there but it isn’t meant to be a top of the line phone, it’s a budget phone and it definitely gets the job done for everyday users. The Android One experience is stock Android and this is a big plus point of this device and the fact that it’s guaranteed security updates for 3 years also makes it great value. You will not be disappointed in this device for the price point but just don’t expect great images and performance. It’s hard to put a star rating on this device but I am going with a very close 3 star. If the cameras improved slightly and the device didn’t struggle just as much with a lot of apps open then it would be a 4 star device but overall this will get the job done for those who just need a basic smartphone for browsing and consuming media.
The positives:
1- The exterior is pleasant to look at, and the textured finish at the back is a welcome throwback to a time when I could confidently grab my phone without it slipping out of my hands like an eel.
2- The screen is surprisingly good, it’s bright enough, colours are vibrant and it’s not as grainy as you may think when you read the 720x1560 pixels technical specifications.
3- The ‘swipe the fingerprint sensor down for notification’ is a handy little trick that I used to have on an old phone of mine (Honor 8).
4- Battery life is not bad, a day’s use on full charge.
5- NFC for Google Pay (But it’s not the only budget phone to have NFC).
This is as many ‘positives’ as I could think of when it comes to this phone, which is sad given the fact that I was looking forward to owning a ‘Nokia’.
The negatives:
1- Straight out of the box, the charger is a slow 10 W charger, even for a budget phone, it’s slow.
2- At first startup, the iconic Nokia startup tone is let down by the tinny, cheap, almost squeaky mono speaker at the bottom of the handset.
3- Believe it or not, but this phone does NOT support WiFi 5G (How much money did that save Nokia?).
4- The ‘pure’ Android 10 launcher, it’s rubbish. (You can not remove the ‘search’ widget, or even relocate it, I downloaded Microsoft Launcher from Play Store, much better).
5- I did not enable the location on my device, yet the lock screen shows weather information, it’s a mystery as to how to correct/disable that.
6-The 3 GB RAM struggles, try to watch a video and the phone will stutter, and the 32 GB ROM is mostly used by the operating system, you only have 16 GB left (That’s before installing any applications).
7- The camera, like many have mentioned, it crashed immediately, but then the app updated and I could finally use it, but really, I can’t say I ever well, it does not matter what the light conditions are, it’s just mediocre at its best, let down is an understatement, even at this price point.
8- This is the worst bit: Android One is supposed to be a gateway to quick OS/security updates, whilst I did manage to update download and successfully install a software update, the security update is now at December 2020, the Google Play System Update is on October 2020, it does say that there’s a Goole Play System Update available, downloads it, restarts, but it’s stuck on October 2020 (My 3 years old OnePlus 6, 1 year old realme 6 Pro, and 1 year old realme X50 5G are all on January 2021, none of these handsets are Android One, yet they’re more secure that this one, enough said).
I think this phone is a real let down and a complete waste of money, even for a ‘cheap’ phone, it’s just not good at all.
For those who are looking for something in a similar budget, I’d try the
-The packaging is alright, it isnt the best appealing packages I have seen but still gives good vibes from the phone. The box has a picture of the phone appreance and has the specification on the back which is good for more information. Inside the box, I got an adaptor, USB-C cable for faster charging, a manual guide, SIM tray tool and as well as the phone itself. So the packaging is decent and does the job.
-Design:
-I really love the design straight on. It has this nice reflection of light blue to dark blue, and this reminds me of the aurora feeling that happens in the Atlantic in which there is a colour shift from one to the other. It does have a plastic back which is very sensitive to quick damages. But, this almost feels as if this doesn't feel cheap and can probably stand a few falls but would recommend a case and a screen protector; it is good in terms of gripping the phone since it isn't a glass back too and doesn't contract any fingerprints on the back. So, I like the design but not the name of the design.
-Display:
-The display offers a HD+ resolution which is quite alright because the phone display is quite bright and the pixel resolution on the phone is alright at this price point. The display is also nice and big with the screen size being 6.39. So, the screen ratio is also good and I don't have any problems with the punch hole cutout in the screen as it is common to be seen around and doesn't interfere too much with the screen. So at this price point, the screen resolution is good as well as the screen size.
-camera:
-The camera quality is medicore at this price point. It gives sharp images when there's light but when it is dark, the images come out really hard to read and recognize. The focus on this is not bad and this does recognise when someone is there or not thanks to the AI Nokia has Implement on this phone. The 13MP camera isn't bad at all on the back. But on the front, there's a lot of light exposure and the focus is really hard.
-Battery:
-Battery life/charging speed:
-I am quite dissapointed with the charging speed. It charges up to 10W which at this day and age is slow. The OnePlus N100 offers a better deal and provides 18W which is quite better then this and I'd say that this phone is a competitor to the OnePlus N100 due to the specs and price; the OnePlus is a bit more expensive but worth the shot. In terms of battery life, again 4000mAp is very good and long lasting and have no issues with that. I was able to last almost a day with good amount of use otherwise it might've lasted longer. So still a great battery at this price point. Yet, the OnePlus for extra £20 offers a bigger battery at 5000mAp and more RAM which is basically the difference and is better with these two things; so it is quite tough.
-chispet:
-The Snapdragon 460 is a great chipset to have at this budget cost. It is 60% faster then its last generation and I have tested this out on a few games such as Subway surfers which works totally great as well as some 3D games with low frame rate at 16fps and this tends to heat my phone up but not a lot. So with 3D games, it is better to avoid playing at high frame rates with these sort of games but other apps work and this totally depends on the app itself. But the chipset is alright but with games it could've been a lot better.
-OS version:
-The OS version on this is android 10 which It comes with but can be upgraded to android 11 as well. This OS looks really clean and I have been a fan of the overall look of the OS version on this. It is very easy to surf through the settings and apps and has become a lot more easier to understand like the iPhone. The notification bar is more accessible now with more options added like 'nearby share' which is like an airdrop which the iPhone has and everything in this OS has become easy overall. However, I can still feel lags here and there but very less rarely in the OS on this phone and this is probably due to the RAM on the phone. Yet, still a very good looking OS Android software.
Overall, this Nokia 3.4 is a very good upgrade then it's last predessesor, it gave a better performing chipset, more RAM, an a small upgrade to the camera quality, better fingerprint response and facial ID and better operating system. However, the let down on this phone was the charging speed, display quality, no wireless charging, no waterproof rating and so this phone has some drawbacks as well. Yet a very good phone. An alternative would be the OnePlus N100 with a few better spec but a bit more expensive.
4/5 (at this price point)
