I'll start with the games. The Wii has some gems, but most of these were released early in the system's lifespan and the sheer amount of junk overwhelms the great. When I go to Best Buy or any other game retailer, I'm overwhelmed by the amount of games clogging the shelves, and 99% of them are ones I'd never play. The actual Nintendo franchise games, which are the only ones I'm really interested in, are few and far between. The last one of those that I bought was Smash Brothers, and my friends and I lost interest in that in less than a month. Before that was Mario Kart Wii, and I have to say, that was a serious disappointment. It didn't add anything new like Double Dash did and it just wasn't very fun. Twilight Princess of course is a great game and Mario Galaxy is a triumph. Aside from Wii Sports (and a few of the games on Wii Play) these are about the only games I've continually enjoyed on the Wii. The games are mostly oriented toward casual gamers and kids.
The main hook for me on the system was the backwards compatibility and that's still what I enjoy most about it. I play Gamecube games on there more than I play Wii games (Ikaruga ftw!) As far as the Virtual Console goes, I've downloaded and enjoyed a few games and eventually wanted to own more, but I really started to feel like I was being ripped off after a while. The prices for these old games, some of them 25 years old, really are way too high and you don't get to download a trial of anything. Even a 64 game isn't worth ten dollars. And most of these are games that I already spent 50.00 on years and years ago. Should we be cut some slack? So I download these games, thinking that I'm going to have a blast like back in the day... it doesn't always work like that. Some games definitely stand the test of time, but some of them just aren't as fun the second time around and would've been better left happily in my memories. There is the Wiiware, but I haven't been interested in any of those games, and of course I can't test them to see if I'm speniding my money wisely. I'd rather spend the same prices on my XBOX 360 for a Live Arcade game that has entirely new content and I can actually play with friends online.
This brings me into my next topic which is multiplayer. This is one of my favorite aspects of gaming and I rarely buy a game that I can't play with friends. Now don't get me wrong, Wii has no shortage of multiplayer, but what it has is severely lacking. I've had 360 for almost a year now (this review isn't a 360 fanboy bash on Nintendo, I promise!) and the multiplayer experience is far better in every aspect than it is on the Wii. Sure with the Wii, you can get some friends and bundle up on the couch and have some laughs. But anything online is very indirect and impersonal. Like in Mario Kart or Smash Brothers for example, you have no idea who you're playing, you can't talk to them... you might as well not be playing online at all. With 360, you see when your friends are online, you see what they're playing, you can compare achievements to see what you've accomplished versus what they've accomplished, you can talk to them at any time, even while playing separate games... the list goes on. With 360 I feel connected to all of my friends whereas on Wii, unless they're in the room with me, I'm pretty much playing by myself.
Graphics... I know there are a lot of gamers who don't care about them and if a game is fun, I really don't either, but when I spend 50.00 on a next generation console game, I don't expect that the graphics will look as good (or in some cases much worse!) than it did on Gamecube. My wife bought Harvest Moon and it looks close to something you find on the Nintendo DS, just on a very enlarged screen. I have a high def TV and even the component cables for enhanced definition can't make some of these games look good.
Now of course there are some good things about the Wii. For one, since it's Nintendo hardware, you can expect it to be durable. I haven't personally tested the Wii's durability, but you know b
