I am writing in regards to what may be a faulty line of Mustek A3USB 1200 Pro scanners. I received this unit for review in early May 2011 and have determined that the focal distance of the employed photo detector to be too short, or excessively divergent. This results in an overly narrow distance for which images can be acquired without distortion or blurring. It is my opinion that this entire line of scanners be recalled; a software/firmware fix may not be sufficient. I believe the fault is the result of inappropriate component selection, particularly the photo emitter/detector.I have conducted the following tests:CPU scan testThe first image scanned was that of a typical socket 3, 486 CPU, top and bottom. The top face of the CPU scanned correctly since the surface is pressed completely flat against the glass, however the bottom of the CPU is blurred beyond recognition. The bottom surface of the CPU is raised approximately 6 mm above the glass (the height of the CPU pins). I have done the same CPU scan test with an ancient UMAX Astra 600S SCSI scanner (which is still working and in use), whereby the top and bottom were both perfectly in focus. The UMAX Astra 600S is a similarly priced entry-level scanner in its day, $179 USD in 1997.The difference with the UMAX technology is that the focal distance has a wider range. It is like taking a photograph with a camera at 30-50 feet, everything will be in-focus without adjustment of the lens.Maybe you don't care about scanning items 6 mm from the glass surface, so how about a typical text book or a map? See below.Textbook scan testI did another scan of an open-faced textbook, 2 pages in one scan. The textbook was pushed as flat as possible on the scanner's glass surface. The entire centre region where the book is bound cannot be read because of the focal distance problem. It is not like with a photocopier where you can sorta make out the text near the centre binding; this text is completely unrecognisable. Scanning a book is typical scanning scenario that maybe 50% of customers will likely be interested in.Don't want to scan textbooks? Ok, how about a map?Map scan testThe next scan test was that of a folded map which was pressed down onto the glass with the weight of the scanner lid. The scanned image is scattered with blurred and clear sections. The blurred sections are from areas of the scan where the map was just barely raised above the glass surface, maybe less than 1 mm. The text is not recognisable, again due to the focal issue of the employed optics. Even when pressing the map down with a heavy book, not all areas of the scan were focused (but more so).So what can you scan with the Mustek A3USB 600/1200 Pro scanner? No much. You are limited to a flat piece of paper which is pressed down firmly with a large flat object. If that is all you want to scan, you are better off saving space and getting a paper fed scanner.In conclusion, it would seem that the Mustek scanner has no focal adjustment, or that the fixed focal length is too narrow. This will become a major issue, not just now, but for the longevity of the scanner as slight movements in the components, i.e. via gravity or warping, will further alter this very sensitive focal length. If the problem is not firmware/software correctable, I would suggest that Mustek issue a hardware fix-it pack for which the customer could install a new emitter/detector, otherwise a full recall may be in order.This problem report has been sent to the project manager at Mustek in charge of this scanner line, however no comment has been received to date.

I need to buy a large format scanner soon, and read a lot of reviews regarding software problems on another listing of this scanner on Amazon. So I decided to try installing the software before buying it. Thought I would post this. Hope it helps...I have an iMac G5 (no intel) with 10.4.11, and this installed the Driver Software successfully...1. Updated Free Stuffit Expander Update on the Stuffit website.2. Went to the Driver Download page on the Mustek website... Mustek Support>Scanner>USB Port>A3 USB 1200Pro.3. Click 10.4 Install. (Did not work on Safari. Got a page of Code.)4. Opened Firefox.5. Went to the Driver Download page on the Mustek website... Mustek Support>Scanner>USB Port>A3 USB 1200Pro.6. Click 10.4 Install.7. Found Installer on Desktop, Double Clicked on it, followed instructions...8. Photoshop>File Menu>Import...9. Saw ScanExpress A3 USB 1200 Pro right there in the Menu. Woohoo!Without a Twain Plug In, it may not work with Graphic Converter. I may ask Thorsten in Germany after I buy the scanner.Now I just need to buy this scanner and see if it actually works!Since I will only be using this scanner for very large items, mostly 12"x12", the 1200x1200 resolution is absolutely fine. It's only when scanning small photographs and things that you may want to enlarge some day, that you need a better quality scanner with higher resolution, and with the price of good regular size scanners down, why not have two?? Yay!

You can't ignore the large tabloid format for under $200. This is one great feature especially if you need to scan in rare pieces of printed music. The tabloid size is great for music and will allow you to archive the sheet music electronically.Bad things:1. Poor packaging. My first shipment arrived in pieces. The scanner ships in a flimsey box that does not protect it very well. When I opened it up on arrival, the glass scanner bed was in pieces. It's very brittle and the glass breaks into powder so be careful.2. Poor quality Control. The second shipment from Amazon arrived in one piece, however the cable that drives the scanner head was popped off and the scanner didn't work.3. Poor customer service. I tried contacting customer support serval times but got no response. I ended up taking the thing apart and fixing it myself (and it worked!). That's the up side -- the scanner is so simple, that you can probably fix any problem with it yourself (except, of course, if it involved a blown circut board).4. El Crapamundo Software Interface. It really stinks and I mean REALLY stinks. Just like in the outhouse, if you stay in there long enough, you'll get used to the stench. That's the same thing with the software. If you get used to its weird behavior, you won't notice it so much. It has a nasty memory leak in it so after you scan in about 25 pages, you'll have to quit the software to realease the memory (the software will crap out on you and say that it can't save the file).The upside is that it has a "good enough" OCR software packaged with it. I used it once or twice on small stuff, but I wouldn't let a large project hinge upon the performance of this scanner.So if you need a big scanner once in a while, this is a great value (mine has already paid for itself several times over). If you are going to use it for an ongoing project or need the scanner (operable) in a short period of time, depending on your project, you might want to pay the extra $[...] to get a more versatile and reliable machine.

Now that this scanner is working, it works very nicely.Good: It can scan a large area and the twain interface works with my photoshop elements well. There are a lot of options on how to scan that are nice too. And it is cheap for a A3 size scanner.Bad: The installation and setup takes patience and lots of time. The written instructions and the instructions that pop up while installing software from cd, are not useable. Instructions would prompt me to add software not provided, and directions from manual would refer me to screens that never poped up. The mustek website is not completely clear or helpfull for support either. I eventually got the drivers off the website and it took 18 minutes to download on my hi speed connection. Once all drivers were installed correctly, the lamp on the scanner wouldn't scan. I unscrewed the 2 screws and it was easy to see a little connection undone. I plugged in the connection and it worked fine. Overall craftsmanship appeared flimsy and light in comparison to my older, and smaller Cannon scanner.Overall: The setup was 3 hours and a complete hassle, but I still give this product 3 stars because of the price and the quality of the scanned image. Buy if you have time, patience, and the computer know how to make it work. Avoid if you dont want the hassle.
