Looks: This thing is gorgeous. People who don't know much about TTs will walk by it and comment. Really nice finish and clean looks. The pictures don't do it justice.
Sound: I am pairing it with the music hall 15.2 amp. The difference between this and the TT I had is obvious. It took a while for the cart to break in but the sound is much more defined and musical. The instruments take more of a lively character. The separation of the instruments is much more apparent. You still do get the pops and clicks. I actually think this may be a little more sensitive to a slightly dusty record than my old TT. You should definitely have some mechanism of cleaning records with this TT. I use the spin doctor which works well for the price.
FYI this TT does have the fishing line anti-skating weight which seems a little cheap and I could easily see it breaking. So far it works well though.
A couple of things to keep in mind with this TT in terms of convenience. It is totally manual. This means you have to put the record on, turn on the table, bring the tone arm over, lower the tone arm with the lever with each play. At the end you need to turn off the motor, raise the tonearm etc. The motor doesn't start and stop with the moving of the tonearm and the tonearm doesn't return at the end of the record. I don't think this is uncommon with audiophile tables but just something to keep in mind.
It does come with a record clamp which is nice. It comes with a stupid felt mat which should be replaced and it collects static and anything else and transfers it to your records which is annoying. Also in terms of sound isolation it is not so good to prevent record skipping if you are dancing or something near the table....at least not how I have it set up.
It also includes a build in level and the three feet are adjustable which is really nice and easy to set up.
Overall I am incredibly happy and I'm sure you will be too!
The tracking force adjustment of the AT is straight forward, but on the MMF that adjustment is spongy and inexact and must be set by a tracking force gauge rather than the attached weight dial if it is to be accurate.
The gloss black finish of this MMF has buff marks and sleaks. There are also a couple small scratches on the plinth directly below the stylus when the tone arm is at rest, like the person mounting the cartridge didn't really care.
Finally, I must comment on the dust cover. It is a bit thinner than the AT's better molded dust cover, and the spring-loaded hinges of the AT are a much higher quality than these MMF friction hinges which appear to be added as an afterthought. Also, the dust cover of the AT didn't attract dust any more than any other item in the room, but the MMF's dust cover acts as a dust magnet, worse than anything I've seen! A dust mote can be seen floating by in the sunlight then it will turn 90 degrees to attach itself to the dust cover. I do notice a strong static charge pulling on my arm hairs when I'm near the MMF that never occurred with the AT. Since friction causes static electricity, I suspect the friction hinges of the MMF dust cover cause the static build-up, while the spring-loaded AT hinges do not.
I do wish I had purchased this earlier, when it was the MMF 5, and came with a genuine glass platen instead of aluminum and a more 'top of the line' cartridge with the highly acclaimed Gyger II stylus.
I had hoped that with the much higher cost of this turntable over the Audio Technica I would be able to give this Music Hall a review that placed it head and shoulders above the Audio Technica, but such is not the case.
NOTE: The instructions are for the '5' and have not been updated to the '5.1'. They state the cartridge is a Goldring with a Gyger II stylus with a recommended tracking force of 1.7g (or 1.75g, depending where you look in the instructions). Actually it is a Magic 3 cartridge with only a nude elliptical stylus and a recommended tracking force of 1.5g. (Why don't they include the cartridge spec sheet? I had to look elsewhere online to find the specs for this cartridge.) The nude elliptical stylus is a step down from the Gyger II stylus that was previously included. The anti-skate settings are glossed over so I had to refer to the online Pro-Ject Carbon instructions (they make the tonearm for Music Hall) to find what 'slot' the anti-skid weight should be attached to for cartridges of other tracking weights, and annotate it in the instructions.
ALSO: I went to the Ortofon website and found a link to enter this turntable to see what cartridges Ortofon recommends; Boy, was I surprised to see that Ortofon does not recommend ANY of their moving coil cartridges for this so-called audiophile grade turntable! Is this turntable not good enough for a moving coil cartridge?
A COUPLE WEEKS LATER: I just received an email from NeedleDoctor in response to my question about using a moving coil cartridge with the MMF 5.1. They said "Don't do it" because of the metal platen. The MMF 5 had a glass platen and a better cartridge and stylus, so I can only say that the '5' was better than this newer '5.1', which is in fact a downgrade!
Overall, it is a solid turntable. But for the price you pay, they should be checking and sending the item as "new" and not a "slightly used item".
I only have about 5 hours of playback on the cartridge(25 to 50 hours is recommended for break in period) but so far the sound from the Magic 3 cartridge(by Ortofon) which is valued at $350 is great and should only get better with time! Would highly recommend this turntable as it plays my new and old LP's perfectly with very low surface noise from the vinyl and no feedback at all. A very solid table, but just remember to place this table on a sturdy cabinet or shelf as it is a non-suspended turntable and heavy footfalls or soft floors may cause needle to mistrack. Counter weight calibration marks are just about perfect after measuring with digital scale set at 1.75 grams tracking force. A very heavy base helps avoid any type of feedback, a very nice design.
So far the Music Hall MMF 5.1 has exceeded my expectations and I wonder what more upscale TT's could offer down the road! We'll see!
Continuing on my Turntable journey, I've bought my third 'Audiophile' turntable in 4 years, and I must say, not only have I been severely Blessed with being able to be so indulgent, but I think I'm in Heaven on Earth X3!!
My first indulgence was the Audio Technica ATLP120, which I bought to replace my older Pioneer PL-550, which was no slouch, but I had to but to get into get into Paramount 78 rpm discs and also wanted to upgrade to some newer gear, and the AT turned out to be a great table. But after I pretty much went through my 78 phase, I wanted to see what the 'High End' had to offer. But let me re-phrase that, High End meaning for me something around $500, which is still a butt-load of mulah! So I initially bought the MMF 2.2LE, which is the younger brother to this Bad Boy! And what a great Turntable that one is, and the Ferrari Red color just was jaw dropping. But this past Christmas an on line dealer put the 5.1 on sale for $300 less than it's normal selling price and I just had to bight the bullet and get it, as there is no way I could afford the $875 regular price. But listen here, look at what I said: I liked the 2.2LE so much that I bought a Second Music Hall Turntable!! That's about as good a recommendation you could ask for!! The Upgrade in Tonearm and Motor is real both in Sound Quality and robustness. The sound on this turntable is more 'honey-thick' than the 2.2LE. By that I mean that listening to an old dance 12" of the band Kix doing 'Body Talk' I heard a clarity in the sound that had authority, and that's almost stupid sounding because I can't really put clarity to what I mean except to say that it was the audio difference between drinking a Budweiser beer and a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Both are great tasting beers, but they have different bodies and taste to them, and that's about as close as I can come to describing the MMF 5.1 against the 2.2LE, I'm satisfied with both, but you DO get a bit of a better build as far as motor and tonearm go-and they DO give an Upgrade to the sound of my vinyl. So there, I'm crazy and I know it! But if your looking for a more 'defined' turntable than the ATLP-120, that I reviewed a few years ago, there are a bunch of great turntables out there in this price range: Rega/Pro-Ject and so on. The Rega's I don't care for their Look on the more up-scale models, they just look wrong to me, whereas the Music Hall Tables look absolutely sexy-beautiful and their very 'clean' looking also, they don't look outlandish or gimmicky, they just look very Nice. So, that's it for now. The New Vinyl Journey Keeps going. I'm enjoying my new baby like a new Bride.
Happy New Year!

set the tonearm according to manual, but for some reason the body of the shell sometimes slightly touching the LP- i have to fix it, but for now don't know how.
Setup is a bit involved if this is your first audiophile table. However, Music Hall does take a lot of the worry out by pre-installing and calibrating the cartridge and tone arm. The most confusing aspect to me was zeroing-out and then setting the counterweight, but I got the hang of it after a few minutes. Likewise, the anti-skating weight is a little tricky at first. Once in place, though, all is good and the rest is easy.
Granted, I have only had it for a short time, but I can already say I am a fan of Music Hall. The step up in quality of construction and results over the mass-market consumer turntables out there is simply astounding, and it is clear this device is meant to last for many years with its solid construction.
MusicHall makes absolutely great products for the price.
Absolutely Beautiful......
Put an Audio Technica AT120-E cartridge on it and you have......
Analog Heaven!!!
I Need Not Say More....
It's worth the money if you know what your doing.

It is not an automatic turntable, (You have to play one LP at a time) which may bother some listeners. However, this is a high quality turntable with a good cartridge at a very reasonable price. In addition, I couldn't see myself spend over $300 for a 40 year old Thorens on Ebay. This is one of the finest turntables I've ever owned.
