There are several great reviews already done for this AVR and I will not repeat the already discussed topics or arguments.
I agree with the positive feedback about the sound quality, the power of this unit is completely sufficient with my Wharfedale 5.1 system (quite old 6 ohm system with left and right speakers having 150W). The Dolby 5.1 signal is decoded properly from XBOX 360 and my two other satellite receivers.
What I don't like is a dramatically bad Internet radio feature. Comparing to the nice implementation known from Marantz MCR510, the Internet radio in NR1504 looks like a total disaster - when I browse stations saved on my favourite lists it takes 1 -2 seconds to switch from one station to another! Moreover, the front display is updated AFTER the successful buffering of the Internet radio station, so during a few seconds the display can stay frozen or empty! During this time the only up to date information can be seen on a TV screen, if switched on - not very likely situation because usually you will never turn your TV screen on just to see more options from Internet radio feature. It seems that the AVF front display doesn't have any cache to keep temporary information. FYI, another great Marantz device I have, MCR510 shows the selected title immediately and it also shows the % progress of buffering the content, even before the sound comes up. I don't expect the percentage status to be shown but at least the negative effect of freezing the front display could be fixed by Marantz engineers.
Some other problem is on HDMI output. I'm using a satellite receiver with HDD (Technistat Digicorder ISIO S) that is able to record the video material and browsing the list of recordings done with different screen resolutions, the screen on my Panasonic TV (TX-P42S10ES) is blinking. I'm unable to fix this behaviour by changing any Marantz, TV or my digital recorder settings.
Overall, the AVR is really nice but its software could be improved.

This stopped working about a month after I bought it and never connected to my TV or my android phone. Very disappointed in the quality and and the device.

Received the item and it worked for 2 days and then wouldn't power up. Now I have to pay for packing and shipping it back to Marantz.
Plus, the user manual comes as a CD-ROM, and the app to run on an ipad is wonky and cumbersome. Even if it worked it'd be disappointing.

This was my own error in not reading all the details, but although this unit is set up for Airplay etc. It requires either a wired network connection (i.e. Ethernet at the device's location) or the purchase of an additional device to pick up wifi.

I needed to upgrade my audio experience and the TIB I had was not doing it.I needed a reciever that was good looking and also delivered high quality sounds.Most avs are rather bulky and thus do not look so good. When marantz introduced their slim line style, I thought this was the right time to buy one. However I was put off by the lack of bluetooth connectivityand so I put off the purchase. When they announced that they had an accessory that could enable blue tooth connectivity,I took the plunge
and ordred the 1504 unit.My first impressions when connecting the speaker wires was that this part was not very user friendly but since you only do this once, I could overlook that. The rest of the set up was straight forward and when finished with the tweeking, I sat down to enjoy myself. It was great and I was hoping my neighbours could bear with me.I use my systems mostly for listening to music. I thus was listening to my music files on my phone using the bluetooth accessory. However after 10 minutes there was suddenly no sound. I dicovered that changing the sound mode from say music to movie that the sound came back.But this was briefly for a few seconds before that also went mute. Trying to adjust the settings (I tried plenty) did not improve the situation.I went to the reviews and I found that somebody else had pointed out this problem.As the other reviews were full of praise for this product, I thought maybe, it was my unit that was defective and if I got a replacement, this problem could not resurface. Amazon were great in response and today I got the replacement. I exchanged the two units and sat down to enjoy my music. After 3 hours of uninterrupted music, I thought my problems w ere over. Then suddenly the sound went mute.The same problem has resurfaced.As a consumer , I should not have to go through this and tomorrow I intend to call the Marantz guys and if they dont have a answer to why this is happening and a lasting solution, I guess I will have to return this product and look for another different brand,
Update: When I talked to the tech guys, they asked me whether I had connected the inputs for the reciever . As I had diconnected some of the inputs the tech guy told me to call back when I had connected them so that we could troubleshoot the problem.When reconnecting the inputs, I realized there was one input into the analog that ended in an audio jack that I had been using in my former system.I wondered whether maybe that was causing the muting effect.When I unplugged it, I decided to see wheter it had any effect. Apparently that was the problem for there no longer was the muting and I have now been using the reciever for 2 weeks without any problem.

I have owned quite a few receivers through the years. In the past 10 years I have had a Denon, Onkyo, and lately a Yamaha. All of those were pretty good receivers but the Marantz just blows all of them out of the water. I love the low profile look and the inputs on the back are neatly placed and logical. It did not take long at all to hook it up to all my sources. One of the main gripes I have with the other receivers is that every time I used the included mic and setup routine I always had to do major changes to the settings after the fact. The center channel (or dialog) was always too low and the subwoofer was generally to low also. With the Marantz I use the included mic and go through the setup routine and it sounded good on the first try. I was amazed at how well my system sounded compared to my earlier receivers. I did make a couple of small setting changes after the fact but it was really just small personal preference changes and not major level changes like I always had to do with the others. I think the menu system works well. To me it is clear and easy to understand. I also like the built in web app for configuring the settings. My speakers are not particularly efficient but I found the 50 watts to be plenty. Especially when you compare it to a 100 watt receiver (like the others I have). Since 100 watts is only 3db louder than 50 watts there really is not that much of a difference sound wise (you need 10 times the power to be twice as loud, so it would take 500 watts to be twice as loud as 50 watts). Anyway I am totally pleased with the receiver and think it is a great value. The only con I have with it is the manual. It only comes with an electronic version (which is what almost all receivers do now days) but the manual is very light on explaining the receiver. I found it difficult to learn how to make changes to the "advanced features". I also found the internet radio and Airplay section confusing, almost like they meant to put in more explanation but never got to it. Anyway besides the manual it is a great receiver.

The Marantz 1504 is a very reasonably priced unit and one of the few to come in at such a a modest height (1050mm).A great bonus when space is an important factor. I have been looking for a replacement for an ageing Yamaha Dps -E800 processor , which has been running in tandem with a marantz integrated amplifier. The NR1504 fits in very nicely to the space left by my old yamaha and has a long list of improvements in both its connection facility and sound replay. I can honestly say that I'm picking up sounds that i had missed or been unaware of before. Theres plenty of power on tap and along list of tweaks that i am still trying to work out/and will keep me tinkering around with for weeks to come. This unit produces a very powerful surround sound field for only 50watts a channel. It looks good to !
So all perfect ? No! There are two issues that you should be aware of when you come to purchasing the marantz. Firstly the instructions come in the form of a cd rom, which is a bore to deal with, time consuming to go through and not particularly informative in how you can use the plethora of improvements that it has to offer( but then again i am replacing a very old bit of outdated kit) So maybe its me.
More importantly, to me anyway, the Marantz comes with a pre out for an external Amplifier, I now realise this is meant for a power amp and not an integrated one ! Although you are still able to use an integrated Amp, this then means that the volume control will be altered by the master volume control on the receiver, thereby altering the volume out put on the integrated amp. I hope that this makes sense. There are two ways to correct this , one is to add a 2 way speaker splitter, like a QED SS20 2 way speaker switch or the more low tec method of sticking a wad of white tack over the Infra Red Remote sensor on your integrated amp. I have decided on the more low tec method and find that this works fine. If you are using the NR1504 on its own then this isn't an issue of course but i do like keeping the stereo replay and home cinema watching as separate media. So 4 stars then and not 5 , but still a really great buy !

I have been using this almost everyday for the past four months and have to say it's great.
The Marantz has been hooked up to a Samsung smart TV (UE37D6530) and uses ARC (samsung calls this AnyNet+) to automatically switch on the amp and allows you to control the volume with the TV remote. I primarily use this as a stereo amp with two monitors and the ARC feature makes it very simple to use with one HDMI cable between the TV and the amp.
Positives:
* ARC allows the TV to switch on the amp and control the volume.
* Airplay for easily streaming high quality audio from iPhones, iPad and Macbooks
* Great sound and easy setup with the supplied microphone and Audyssey software.
Negatives (I wouldn't let these stop you buying the amp):
* The network media player and apps are shockingly poor quality (Spotify, last.fm, Flickr etc) and the marantz iPhone app is very poorly designed. Obviously the apps on your iPad/iPhone are miles better than using a TV remote to scroll around a slow and extremely poorly designed interface so forget Marantz even made an attempt to include these features and just use Airplay.
* Mine emitted and loud pop and died after 4 months but has been replaced by Amazon within 48 hours.
* There appears to be a bug in the automatic switch on over ARC and sometime turning the TV on doesn't power on the amp. You need to use the Marantz remote to turn on the amp but can continue to use the volume control on the TV remote after this. Annoying, but not a deal breaker, hopefully Marantz can fix this with a software update.

Got this to replace an ancient DVD/VCR player in my motorhome. Form factor was really important as I don't have a lot of space to stack the receiver, DVD player, satellite receiver, disk drive for the satellite, etc. I've got internet wherever I go, so can connect this to the internet and listen to radio from virtually anywhere (like my daughters program from University of Michigan) to anywhere I am. It plugged into my speaker system with a little effort, but it discovered the center speaker and the woofer were incorrectly wired and dropped them in the setup until I have time to straighten them out. Sound is still great because it balanced everything perfectly anyway. Everything, DVD player, satellite receiver, set top box for cable and broadcast signal all plug in via one of the 6 HDMI ports, and then via one HDMI out port to the HDTV. We are 100 miles from the nearest town of any size, and with this system it's just like I'm in my media room back home!

I've had this 1504 Slim Line Marantz receiver now for several months and really enjoy the sound it puts out. It drives my two speakers and subwoofer with a well balanced sound that was easy to adjust. It looks great in my TV stand also!

I'm loving the compact design and features of this receiver. It's a little overkill for my set up but I wanted to be able to expand (currently: 2.1 speakers, Fios, Chromecast, streaming music from iPhone). I haven't explored the capabilities thoroughly but, as a home theater novice, was surprised how easy the set-up was. No sign of the problems other reviewers complain about. I'll update this review if that changes.

I am very happy with the Marantz NR1504. I found set-up to be easy for the most part. Connecting my speaker wires was a minor hassle since you have to unscrew the ports to attach the cables. Other receivers, such as the Denon E300 have little buttons that you simply push to install the speaker wires. I wish this receiver had that feature. Otherwise, set-up was a breeze. I connected the receive directly to my TV and ran the set-up process using the Audyssey microphone. This process went smoothly for me. Afterwards, I disconnected it from my TV and into my video processor. Note, if you have a separate video processor, you can't run the set up process for this receiver through it. The Marantz needs to be directly connect to the TV.
The sound quality of the Marantz is great. I like how it accurately separates different sounds between the speakers, so I get a "full room" sort of feel when playing games or watching movies. I would describe my speakers as average and I feel like the Marantz is able to make them sound better than I thought they could sound.
I also like the slim factor of this unit. It looks sleek on my shelf and looks better than most of my other equipment. The build quality also appears high.
I had the chance to try both this receiver and the Denon E300. Denon and Marantz are owned by the same parent company. This Marantz unit is very similar to the Denon E300. The Marantz has 5 more watts and one more output than the E300. The Marantz is also significantly slimmer than the E300. However, in terms of sound quality, I wasn't able to tell the difference between the two units. The Marantz is significantly more expensive than the E300 though. Perhaps with nicer speakers, I'd be able to tell the difference between the two units. For my purposes, both units are about equal.
Overall, I'm very happy with the Marantz NR1504 and would recommend it for anyone looking for a basic receiver that can make good use of average speakers.

The front panel USB input will accept MP3 players or flash-drive memory.
Stereo playback can be customized with selectable acoustic modes.
The FM tuner pulls in stations quite well, using the supplied wire-antennae.
Internet Radio (Pandora--Spotify)can also be used with Ethernet input.
This was to be strictly home-theater device but I often use it to listen to music.
The Marantz is mated to Energy Take Classic 5.1 speakers (outstanding synergy)

Received this for my birthday back in Oct 2013, use it regularly, connects to a 50 in Panasonic plasma. Feeds are cisco cable tv box, Panasonic blue ray player, windows 7 PC, Replay 5000 though the analogs. Speakers are 5.1 JVC's from a JVC home theater in a box I received as another BD present 8 years ago. I did buy banana plugs for the speaker hookups, made life a bit easier. Setup worked as does the speaker calibration, a rather neat feature considering I used to use an Avia and Radio shack sound meter. All in all very satisfied.Two additional things I did need to purchase were the banana plugs and an 8 port gigabit switch, everything is wired on the network. The receiver has updated 3 times since I turned it on which to me means they are still paying attention. After owning Sony and JVC I'll probably stick with Marantz for future upgrades.

This gives decent sound in my TV room. I'm using it with the KEF 5005.2 speaker package in a mildly acoustically treated room (Primacoustics London 12).
I like the compact size and number of HDMI inputs.
The detachable power cable gives you the opportunity to upgrade this if you believe it'll make a difference or just to customise the length.
The speaker binding posts accept banana plugs.
There is even a remote in/out connection in case you have an IR receiver elsewhere in your set up and need to keep this receiver out of line-of-sight.
There are lots of configuration options to satisfy all but the most demanding users - just have a look at the user manual (available on the Marantz site).
The iPhone app works pretty well too. I use it to navigate the Spotify functionality as well as to adjust surround modes (until I get them added to my universal remote).
The auto setup (Audessy) does a pretty good job of measuring the room acoustics. Advanced users can use the built in Equaliser manually too if they prefer.
You can charge phones and tablets using the front USB.
Lack of Wifi doesn't bother me because I have a hub in my TV console connected to powerline ethernet.
The only negative I can think of at this price...

I bought this to replace my old pioneer vsx300 & wish I had before. The sound is excellent & much more detailed particularly from the rear speakers. The auto speaker set up using supplied microphone is spot on. There are enough hdmi connections for most users, plus audio return channel for TV.
Also the picture quality is slightly better, so not much loss as it passes through amp. There is also an on screen set up guide when you first use it which is very helpful. Don't use internet features much but internet radio is good. I use this with a set of Wharfedale DX1 speakers which work very well. This unit also runs much cooler than my last amp. It looks great and well made.

I was looking for a slim receiver, as the shelf I have doesn't have a lot of vertical room. Wanted AirPlay and HDMI switching. This is the only system I found that met those needs (shorter receivers seem to be hard to find). Works well. I find that sending YouTube videos to the unit from my iPad isn't as seemless as it could be but it's not a problem. It works, just takes a lot longer than I would expect. Sometimes I have to send it twice. If that's your main goal then an AppleTV handles that a lot better. Mine was the whole package so the fact that this is less than perfect isn't a big deal. It works so I deal with the extra few seconds it takes over other devices.

If you are familiar with receivers, then you'll have no problem integrating this into your home theatre system. On the other hand, if you need instructions, it might be a little more difficult. The guides are in large PDFs contained on a CD that is accessed from a silly, clunky menu. Go into the CD files and drag out the PDFs ending in "ENG" (if you want English) and load them onto your iPad if you want to have the manuals accessible.

I have been really blown away by this small receiver. I replaced an older Onkyo 7.1 and didn't expect it to outperform the larger receiver but it did. The first thing I noticed was the Marantz drove my Polk Audio's with authority. Not only that but it is so slim. It looks like a Blu Ray player and is quite light compared to older home stereo receiver's I've owned.
Setup was quite simple thanks to the well laid out instructions. Color coding all of the connections for speaker wire and including a bunch of labels to put on the wires made it easy to replace my old receiver. I did try the Audessy mic and settings but found that the sound was not very good after using it and set the receiver back to it's default. This is the second time I have found this particular option to not work all that well. My old Yamaha from 12 years ago had this down to a science.
The number of HDMI ports was impressive. I had plenty of free slots and a few left over.
I have always wanted to try a Marantz receiver and this one lives up to the companies reputation. The only negative is that the Marantz has a bit of a cheap feel to it. When I see Marantz I think big equipment with minimalist fronts. This is a much smaller and cheaper receiver so it's really hard to knock it. Besides, it's got what counts and that is terrific sound.

This AV receiver hit the sweet spot for me. It has ample HDMI connections to make it future proof. It also has a few component video connections for those older devices but not too many. And the slim profile is a nice bonus.
I was concerned that the 25 W/channel might not be enough but so far it seems to be just fine for my modest system. I haven't even noticed it so that concern is no longer an issue for me.
The other concern I had after I got the receiver was power usage in standby mode. I hooked up my kill-a-watt to the receiver to see how much power it uses both on and off. When it's on it uses about 25-30W for my current configuration (3.1 because my rear speakers aren't connected). That's great. However, when it was off it was using about 4 watts. That may not seem like much but over the course of a month that could add up to about 3 kWh of energy which is about 25% of my daily usage. Fortunately there is a solution to this problem. If you search the manual for "standby power" there are 3 things that consume power during standby that can be disabled. Turning these things off dropped the power consumption below 1 Watt. Here are the things that you can disable:
* HDMI pass-through (Setup->Video->HDMI Setup->HDMI Pass Through)
* HDMI control (Setup->Video->HDMI Setup->HDMI Control)
* Network always on (Setup->Network->IP Control)

I have recently changed from a Yamaha amp to this Marantz amp and I am more than pleased with it. It looks and sounds great with plenty of features. I am using it with a Bose set of speakers and results are first class. I would definitely recommend it.

I had a denon receiver that was hit by lightning and the hdmi out stopped working. I got the marantz nr 1504 as a replacement and I chose Marantz especially due to its slim size factor (am running out of room in my cabinet). The problems I faced have all been around the audyssey auto calibration feature. I keep getting the message that "Microphone or speaker is none". But I can hear the sound of the test tones being sent through the speakers and I know that the mic is fine, as I tried using the old Denon mic that I had too (which used to work perfectly fine with my old Denon). I spoke to Marantz support who said I might have a faulty unit and asked me to return it. I returned my first unit and got a replacement unit from amazon. This one too has the same problem.
I tried and retried several times to get the calibration to work. I took off all the banana plugs from my speaker cables and plugged in the bare ends directly to the speaker connections. Still no luck. I will have to end up returning the second unit too. Overall, a very frustrating experience. It was the first time that I tried a Marantz product and it will most probably be my last one.

Bought on the strength of Amazon reviews, as I wanted to cut the amount of HDMI connections to the back of my TV but found that the sound options were very limited, TV stereo only!!! via optical connection, also picture quality was compromised.
Went back to my trusty old Pioneer until I find somthing more suitable. Thanks goes to Richer Sounds, no issues when returned.

A few times already, (after 1 month), I've had to unplug/replug to get the unit to turn on by any means... What truly crap software that can allow a consumer unit to fail to respond to a user action on the power button. It seems that our previously simple lives with audio and video cables are now so complicated by digital connections that even the hardware manufacturers no longer know what they're doing. I also get stutters every so often with video, but can't pin it down to one device or another.

I'm very happy with this receiver. Unlike my previous receiver which was also full of bells and whistles, this one really delivers. The internet radio and home-networking just work. My previous piece of equipment would constantly skip or drop a song or it would take forever to switch from one song to another. No problems with this one. The sound quality is great, but it does not go all that loud (not a problem if you live in apartment like me). Of course the small form factor is one of the more attractive features of this receiver.
It also comes with Android and iPhone Apps so you can control the receiver from your phone. At first I thought that this would be a silly gimmick of a feature, but it isn't. No more searching for the remote! If you have your phone in your pocket, then you have your TV remote too! And it provides an easier interface to search for and play music than the receiver itself.
One slightly annoying thing: I'm still using an older DVD player which uses the older RGB connections rather than HDMI. This receiver does not have the older connections, so we had to hook up the DVD player directly to the TV instead. If you get a newer DVD player, you shouldn't have this issue.

having owned Marantz hifi before I know how good they are and with this receiver I was not disappointed it is a perfect match for my Marantz cd player, turntable and tannoy speakers. they all produce a real hifi sound. the service from the suppliers were very good.

This is a compact AV receiver with many HDMI connections and features that well outlined in the description. Plenty of amplifier power for all except some inefficient speakers. The Iphone app performed well and gave nice control over the receiver. The reason for 4 stars was that it does not have full analog to HDMI conversion. It is included in the next model of this receiver. For most this is not an issue but who have some devices like some Nintendo gaming machines - it will require you to run a separate wire from this receiver to your HD TV. THe one wire solution is preferable.

The airplay compatibility on this is nothing short of amazing! I love being able to stream music from my ios device to my living room speakers from anywhere.
Pros:

IOS app is excellent, I hardly use the remote.
Airply is amazing and elegant.
IOS device control - you can hook up your ios device and control it from the remote (basic music controls only)

I've got another Marantz and it sounds great. Some of the on-screen controls aren't as user friendly as other brands, but for the price you can't beat the sound.

This is a really great reciever, and i looks really great too. Everything just works as it should, although most of the built in apps are kind of useles, but I was expecting as much.
Airplay works really great, it even powers on the reciever and controls the recievers volume.
The remote App works, but could have been done better.
