I purchased the Trendnet 5 port gigabit switch and was going to buy another and noticed something odd. When I searched for gigabit switches and sorted by average customer reviews among the top reviewed were four Trendnet products - each has exactly 53 reviews and 3 products have exactly 131 reveiws. This is too unlikely to be coincidental.TRENDnet 5-Port GREENnet Switch (5 x 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX RJ-45 Ports) TE100-S50g (Black Metal)TRENDnet 16-Port GREENnet Ethernet Switch (16 x 10/100Mbps Auto-Negotiation RJ-45ports) TE100-S16EG (Black)TRENDnet 16-Port GREENnet Ethernet Switch (16 x 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX RJ-45 Ports) TE100-S16g (Black)TRENDnet 8-Port GREENnet Switch (8 x 10/100Mbps Auto-Negotiation RJ-45 ports) TE100-S80g (Black Metal)3 products have exactly 131 reviews:TRENDnet 5-Port Unmanaged Gigabit GREENnet Switch (5 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ethernet Ports) TEG-S50g (Black Metal)TRENDnet 5-Port Unmanaged Gigabit GREENnet Switch (5 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ethernet Ports) TEG-S5g (Black Plastic)Switch (5 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ethernet Ports) TEG-S5g (Black Plastic)Buy new: $56.00 $27.9955 new from $24.70 1 used from $17.50Get it by Tuesday, Feb 21 if you order in the next 6 hours and choose one-day shipping.(131)Eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping.Product Features - "... efficient Gigabit network in ... standard TRENDnet switches.) ..."14.Product DetailsTRENDnet 26-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch (24 x 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX Fast Ethernet ports and 2 Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ports) TEG-S224 (Black Metal)The first review in all of the products with 53 reviews is:27 of 27 people found the following review helpful:5.0 out of 5 stars A great switch - truely plug n play, but useless documentation, July 4, 2010ByJohn F. Huesman "QPhysics" (Osgood, Indiana, United States) - See all my reviews(REAL NAME)Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)This review is from: TRENDnet 8-Port GREENnet Switch (8 x 10/100Mbps Auto-Negotiation RJ-45 ports) TE100-S80g (Black Metal) (Personal Computers)This switch is great. I've been working with computers and networking since the early 90's (anyone else remember Mosaic?), and I've had to deal with a lot of switches that required manually setting every little thing in order to get it to work - and of course every type of router you were connecting the switch to required different settings. This switch is absolutely plug-n-play. If your broadband (cable, DSL) router is filled up and you need to add another network device, you cannot go wrong with this switch. The documentation is horrible, perhaps even a bit misleading. In the troubleshooting section, it says something about the switch not being designed to allow more than one computer to access the internet. Well, that's technically true...you can't just have a switch and really do anything with it...but if you have broadband access, you have a router (technically, that box on your desk is a router plus a 4-port switch) so that is already taken care of.So...here's the details on how to get all your computers, network printers, network storage, game consoles, blu-ray players, etc. to talk to each other and the internet. Be sure to follow these instructions exactly...1. Turn off all your computers, printers, etc., and the broadband router.2. Unplug something (anything, it doesn't matter what, but I usually use port 1) from the broadband router.3. Run a short ethernet cable between the port on the router you just freed up and ANY port on the switch.4. Plug the thing you just unplugged and everything new into the switch.5. Plug the switch AC adapter into the wall and the back of the switch.6. Turn everything back on.THAT'S IT! How could it get any easier than that?I think TRENDnet is really missing a selling point here by not stressing how easy this switch is to add to your existing network!I don't know, and honestly I'm not going to try and measure, how much energy is actually saved by the graduated power sent to the ports based on cable length, but I think it's a nice feature to shut down power to a port if the device is idle for long periods of time.So far, I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this switch. When I first pulled it out of the box, I thought it was a bit light (even though it is made out of metal and not cheap-o plastic) to stay on the desk when 8 cables are plugged into it...but then I noticed that they even included a square of velcro to attach to the desk and switch so it wouldn't move around.Summary: if you need to expand the number of ports in your network, buy this switch.I'm also emailing this to Amazon CS to look into

.Nice switch. Prices are bouncy and coming down. See Pricing below.Green circuitry shaves $9 to $29 off your electric bill over 5 years. (see Note 1). - - - Intro for Novices - -This is like a power strip for your network cabling. Turns one feed into many. "Unmanaged" means it's dead simple. No configuration, software, or settings. It does not substitute for a router. If your router does not have enough cable ports, this is your answer right here. If you have a network cable running to your TV, but your TiVo, Blu-Ray, Roku, X-box, etc. also want network access, this is the ticket. Or the 5-port version, which turns one feed into 4. - - -PROs and CONs - - -PROs: * Green circuitry saves $ * Nice price (at low tide) * 3-year warranty - Transformer plug does not block other outlets - Slots on bottom for secure mounting (wall, shelf, or bottom-of-shelf)OKs: - Fit and finish are good - Packaging is green and hassle freeCONs: - None yet- - - Compared to TP-Link Models - - -As of April, 2013, TP-Link and TRENDnet seem to be the two leaders in value-priced green switches.I don't think TP-Link has a 100 Megabit green model, but if you're going Gigabit, check TP-Link for better pricing.Slight advantages of TRENDnet over TP-Link: - 3-year warranty vs 2-year - Lower energy cost ???? (was not able to do apples-to-apples comparison. See Note 2) - It's tiny (5.38" x 2.79" x 1") vs small (6.5" x 4.25" x 1.18") - Metal housing- - - Alternatives - - -A 5-port model is about $7 less, on average. A Gigabit green model (TRENDnet) is on average about $7 to $12 more than this 100-Megabit green model. Helpful if you're moving very large files between local machines. - 5 port...100M-bit...TRENDnet Green - 5-port Gigabit TP-Link Green - 8-port Gigabit TP-Link Green - 5 port...Gigabit...TRENDnet Green - 8 port...Gigabit...TRENDnet Green- - - Pricing - - -Prices are very bouncy for these switches here on amazon. There's an "Online Price Alert" that will email you whenever this or any amazon product dips below your target price. Google it. It's nicely done. Or try camelcamelcamel, which also shows price history.- - - Tips - - -Blinking lights - If they annoy, cover them with masking or electrical tape.- - - Notes - - -Note 1: Each watt is 8.76 kWh per year (24x365). That's $ .96 to $2.89 per year (@ $ .11 to $ .33 per kWh). I used a Belkin F7C005 Energy Monitor to check each switch. Green circuitry saves about 2 watts, 24 hours per day.0 ports active:0.5 watts TRENDnet TE100-S80g (Green)1.0 watts TP-Link TL-SG1008D (Green)2.6 watts Linksys EZXS55W3 ports active:1.4 watts TRENDnet TE100-S80g (Green)1.9 watts TP-Link TL-SG1008D (Green)3.45 watts Linksys EZXS55W5-ports active:2.1 watts TRENDnet TE100-S80g (Green)2.32 watts TP-Link TL-SG1008D (Green)Note 2: Energy comparison was between the 100 Megabit TRENDnet model and the Gigabit TP-Link model. There was almost no data traffic, but the apples-to-oranges comparison might be unfair. If anybody has the 8 port Gigabit Trend-Net Green model and a meter, please measure and comment.~~~ Comments & questions welcome ~~~

Summary - Solid performance and Reliability. Great cost. The problem - for Home Video files a large amount of bandwidth is necessary to support the transfer of data. This was congesting the wireless network. I also had three devices to connect: a Bluray player; a Apple TV, and a Roku. The solution - the use of this switch in conjunction with an Apple Airport Router Airport Extreme 802.11N (5TH GEN)and a Slingbox SlingLink Slinglink Turbo 1PORT Enet Connection Bridge (SL 150-100).The implementation - Since the Airport has limited wired router ports, and they were all used, I utilized one switch to unload the router and the second switch to distribution the data from the slinglink.Complications - I only had one issue. Since I have Directv, the Directv everywhere protocol did NOT like the fact that it was hooked to a switch and not the router. This caused the the Directv to tell me on my iPad that my Directv was on a different network. The solution was to plug the Directv Ethernet connection directly into the Airport. After that, no issues.Notes - I did read where some people have tired to use a switch in front of their router and after their cable modem. Since most data providers prevent this in their modem software, this is typically not possible. This is no fault of the switch.Performance - I was streaming on to my iPad through wireless (SD), streaming on the Apple TV (HD), on the Roku (SD), and the Bluray (HD). There was no desegregation of image quality. Although I was switching between streams on my LG, I saw no dropouts. I continued to watch a movie from Apple to the end and saw no video artifacts, tiling, etc.Reliability - These last two join a switch I have wired in the basement for the kids set-up in the play area (XBox, Wii, Bluray). I have had this one for eight months or so now. It has performed flawlessly, so my current expectation is for the same level of quality.Recommendation - I always look at the one star reviews to contrast the five stars. Having read them all, I can honestly say that I am not having any of those issues. I would recommend this product and, as this last purchase bears out, would buy it again.

I've only had this running for a few days, but so far it's all going well. My setup is Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem -> Netgear WNR3500L-100NAS Router -> TRENDnet switch. I have a cable of about 100 ft running between the router and the switch, and it appears to be a rock-solid connection.I have two main areas in my home that I use connections heavily: in the first area I have my OBi100 VoIP and main computer (all connected to the Netgear), and in the second area I have XBOX, PS3, Zotac ZBOX and SmartTV (connected to this switch).Since I really only use one device connected to this switch at a time, and rarely transfer large data files, the 100Mbps speeds are plenty adequate (Netflix streaming works great). I did transfer some large files just to try it out, though, and was pleased enough with the performance. So far, as price-to-performance ratio goes, I am happy with the product.

The price was the motivator for me the buy this switch. Some of the reviews indicate that its "staying power" may be an issue but I am really hoping I do not experience breakdown issues. The switch is perfect for my home theater setup and installation was really easy. I replaced a four line switch with this unit as my need for additional ports had expanded with just about every device now connecting to the internet. I am streaming video (movies) through my receiver, blu ray player, tv, roku device and PS3 and all of them are fed through this switch with a single line connecting to a neatly tucked away router in a closet across the room.Works like a charm as a low cost solution. I may buy a couple more just to have around in case the switch fails down the road. The cost is so low I can get that kind of backup insurance at a very low price.

I had a Linksys 8 port Ethernet switch before I bought the TRENDnet switch. I was having all sorts of problems with my network of 3 Macs, laser printer and a single PC. I bought the TRENTnet switch figuring I would replace hardware pieces until I found the problem, and as soon as I plugged it in, all my network problems disappeared. My network is now stable, no machines are thrown off the network, and installation couldn't have been easier. Just turn off all your machines, plug them into the switch, and turn them all back on again. It's the best $35 I've spent in a long time.
