We purchased 7 of these switches. I have in the pass been very satisfied with Netgear products. So these problems has come to me as surprise.I want to point out that these switches are Version 4 and in the past I have never used anything newer than version 3.Within 2 weeks of configuring and putting these switches in with another 6 other switches from other venders we began to see problems. The newest firmware 5.4.x caused constant reboots. After two months of tech support going back and forth we were told to downgrade the firmware to 5.0.xNow we have constant issues with network ports becoming unusable over the time the longer the switches stay up. VLANs will stop being passed to some ports. The IP stack fails and you cannot manage the systems unless you reboot the switches.We have had RMA requests that have gone unheeded.At this point we have are going to ship all of these back to Amazon at a loss.I believe that there has been some changes in who Netgear has chosen to use for developing there systems for the SOHO switches. This is why the difference in reviews from 2008 to 2012. At that time (2008) I would have said great things about this switch model, being I have placed a number of them in production in many other companies and have always been very happy.

Received two of theses switches and both of them had issues out of the box:1) Random reboots several times daily2) If I would set the time on the box it wouldn't set as what I was putting in, it would be like 7 hours and 23 minutes off -- very weird.I finally found a reference on Netgear's Prosafe Forums about version 5.4.11 (or whatever the lastest) of the firmware causing some people issues. I dropped down to whatever the latest 5.0.2 firmware was and it seems to have stabilized the boxes.Edit: After using these boxes for a few days I have given up and returned them. The web admin would stop loading and I would have to reboot the boxes daily. They have been replaced with Cisco devices.

Let me re-cap my 3 minutes of experience with switch.I ordered one of these last week and attempted to install it today. I un-boxed it, admired it briefly, patted myself on the back for getting such a great deal, set it on my desk, and plugged it in. At that point, I was greeted by the roar of the twin fans on the side of the switch. This switch is every bit as loud as some of my full tower servers are upon start-up.While reading the instructions for configuring the switch I saw that you need to install some software on a PC. I rolled my eyes, and I got that started.After a couple minutes, the switch made a loud pop and went dead.The Good:Had it worked, it would have been a nice looking, inexpensive 48 port gigabit switch.There is no power brick. It takes a standard PC power cord.The Bad:This thing is absurdly loud. In fact one of the enclosed documents is a massive grid of the available Netgear switches and shows the decibel comparison for all of the models. This one was very high compared to those next to it. Had I not packed it up already I'd share that here. ...also worth mentioning was the mean time to failure numbers in that grid. If I recall correctly, the 24 port version next to it was rated at 400k hours whereas the 48 port version was 100k hours. That kind of jumped out at me.It doesn't appear that you can just configure it with a web browser out of the box and the configuration software takes 3.25Gb of disk space. That seems insane to me.Fortunately Amazon's return service is fantastic. The switch will be on its way back tomorrow, and I'll be ordering something else. It is entirely possible that I just had a lemon and if I had ordered another of these, the next one would have worked flawlessly. I chose not to because of the noise level (louder than my server room) and the configuration utility.

we were having some networking issues with a old cisco catalyst switch with our voip phones. after replacing everything i could think of i replaced the switch with this one and gained an extra 24 portssetup was super easythe only cons to think of are1) the menu system is sometimes wacky and you miss items becuase they are under sub sub menus2) to update the firmware you have to install on your local machine the netgear managment software that uses adobe flash and kinda sucks (im not sure why there isnt (like on all other routers) a menu to just upload the latest firmware3) you have to make an account to download the latest firmware ........why do i need to prove i own the router to download firmware? why want your firmware if i didnt have the switch?

I have always been a satisfied customer for Netgear products so I proceeded to order these switches when I needed POE for a VOIP upgrade we were doing in our network. Unfortunately, we appear to have received 2 faulty units. First unit had ports 1-12 die within 24 hours. They worked at first. We subsequently had a few other ports go inoperative over the next few days in the 13-17 range. Not sure what was going on.We then installed Switch #2 to replace it. It ran for a weekend and then found that some ports would not allow a booted PC to acquire an IP address with DHCP. We power cycled the switch and it NEVER rebooted properly. The power LED was on but no other indicators of proper activity.We have tried other power sources (we were in a UPS) but the switches still do not function.It's worth noting at this point that a replacement 48 port switch and two additional 24 port switches are functioning as expected in the same environment so that still seems to point to defective switches.DL

We has some problems from day one and Netgear would not replace it. It failed in six months and they replaced it. Not very happy with this switch or Netgear support proceedures.
