iRobot Roomba 880?

We have hardwood throughout the house with one small area rug and the Roomba gets up on the rug with no issues. It senses the stairs and doesn't go over the edge.
The rubber rollers are key for all the fur and hair. I highly recommend this vacuum and have been telling everyone about it!

Maybe it’s the fact I haven’t had any of the problems with suction or navigation that other reviewers seem to; maybe it’s that I’ve got a genetic illness that effects my heart, autonomic nervous system, and joints that results in having vacuumed with my previously-beloved

Now I don't view the 880 as a "fire and forget" robot vacuum. Naturally you need to pick up any stray items on the floor (those generally being courtesy of my five year old daughter), as well as position "blockage" (via the included lighthouse/virtual wall units or makeshift items such as using my dog's bed to block a hallway). It can also get stuck under certain things - such as furniture where it goes underneath, turns, then it's top sensor gets stuck as on a lower part of the furniture as it tries to move out). But all in all, it's quite effective, particularly if you make sure you're there to watch potential pitfalls in its performance, and then put more blockers in place (I block off two undersides of furniture where I've seen it get stuck prior to using it now).
Another thing I've noticed is that it has completely bypassed the "virtual walls" at times, regardless of the "distance" setting (the virtual walls let you set short, medium, and long range). With the lighthouse mode (where it doesn't pass until it determines it has "cleaned a room") it's been more reliable, but still falters occasionally.
That said, it does an amazing job sucking up my dog's ENDLESS shedding (unless you own a long-haired retriever, you can't believe how much they can shed every day), and also makes me more productive following it up on the hardwood floors. There I use a Swiffer to mop after the 880 has done its job (as what I've ready of the robot mops hasn't convinced me to buy one yet).
In summary, the 880 has a few minor issues (all quickly surmountable), and I highly recommend it. The included picture is the primary reason I bought the 880, and even he doesn't mind it (he actually let it bump into him until I taught him to start getting out of its way).

I watched many videos on this product and one reviewer recommended moving things, example: putting your chairs up so it can easily get under the kitchen or dining room tables. I took all the advice from reviewers and each Saturday morning, I put everything up, chairs, dog crates, recycle bin etc. and let it do it's thing. I live in the south west and have saltillo tile in my living room, galley kitchen and kitchen table area. It is about 780 square feet. The Roomba 880 takes about 1 hour to complete the entire area. We used the vitual walls to block off the entrance ways going into the family room and another hallway on the other side of the house. We close any doors and lift the window curtains and shears so they are not touching the floor. One time it pulled down a window shear but stopped immediately. Now we just put the them up using the side curtain holders on the wall. I have to say, we have curtains that do rest on the floor, like they fan out at the bottom. It sounds like a lot of work, but now I have such a system that it is easy. I run it early morning. Let it recharge and run it again late morning. I mop and then put things back in place for the rest of the weekend and week.
I have two small dogs and honestly the majority of the items collected in the bin is dog fur. My floors look amazing and it is one of the things guests comment on when visiting our home on how beautiful the floors are.
I had initially thought I would run it every day, but I found that to run it on Saturday (twice) is perfect for our life style. I always want to be home when it is running. It one time got caught under the dishwasher edge and one time under by husband's recliner. Now I just open the recliner, so the foot rest is extended and it solved that problem. It has never again got caught under the dishwasher.
My husband and I are very frugal so it was hard to spend the money, but I have to say I am very happy with the roomba and my only regret is not buying it sooner. Highly recommend.

I also got the Braava mopping robot a few days ago... now THAT is a smart robot. Whoever designed and programmed the Braava should replace the Roomba team completely. It's quite amazing... simple, quiet, small and intelligent. I could leave that thing in a room and every inch of it would be spotless. Reminds me of a little scrubber robot from a 3d cartoon.

It does find the docking station after it figures out the room and all obstacles. The catch tray, because of its small size, needs to be emptied after every use but the red lighted indicator helps you remember. We have a dog that sheds constantly and this is why we decided on this model to help with the pet hair on the floors.
We will see if the programmed schedule works this week and update our review in a few weeks.

The Roomba handles the brunt of the cleaning quite impressively. It doesn't scrape/scrub muddy paw prints, but it does take out the gravel, grit, and most importantly, the fur. Some fur gets wrapped around the brush and rollers, but we also didn't sweep before we unleashed the machine so the conditions were much hairier than they will be going forward. Cleaning up the rollers and brushes takes 5 minutes if you stop and make coffee while doing it. We've been very impressed with it so far, and walking barefoot on the laminate we have both noticed it no longer feels gritty like after we sweep. Much cleaner feel. Also bravely marches into areas no vacuum has ever gone before, like under the couch. Manages to not chew up or snag any cables running around my living room. That's a much more impressive feat considering the state of my living room. Wires everywhere.
As for the cons:
-The dog also hates this vacuum. Hopefully he comes around and ignores it like he ignores us telling him to get out of the way. For the time being it's only scheduled to run while we are home so he doesn't try to protect the house by killing the thing.
-The cat watches it intently. I'm concerned that she is trying to incorporate the Roomba into her plans to kill us in our sleep and burn the house down. Hopefully the Roomba remains friendly and the cats efforts are in vain.
-It finds weird things under the couch. Why was a spoon under there in the first place?
-Corners. It's a round robot, and while the brushes on the side get pretty close, it can't get into a 90 degree corner perfectly so there's a little bit left there. Pretty minor issue to say 1% of the floor is still dirty after the other 99% gets cleaned though.
-Doesn't come with stick on googly eyes. It would be better if it had googly eyes.

-Does a great job on hardwood and carpets.
-If you value your time, this is for you.
-You can set it up to work when you're not at home. You can also just activate it whenever you leave the house.
-Surprisingly smart in going and cleaning around corners. Doesn't fall off stairs.
-I think it maps the area the first few times so it gets more efficient with time but haven't looked into it.
-Durable little bugger
Cons:
-It's almost as loud as a regular vacuum so plan accordingly. You can just run it when you're at work.
-You have to do a manual sweep your self before each cleaning to make sure there are no wires, clothing or small loose hard pieces that might jam it up and that the ground is not wet. You can easily block its path to wiring etc by the supplied towers or a physical object. I didn't test the towers extensively so not sure how effective they are.
-It will go back to its station if its container is full but that's only an issue if the place is very dirty. Not an issue if it's regularly cleaning.
-If the supplied GPS isn't up, it may run out of battery away from its charging station since it gets lost
-A bit finicky when trying to place it properly on the charging station so it starts charging
-You have to empty the container after 1-2 cleaning sessions -depending- but you can do this anytime before the next scheduled cleaning.
-if you have pets, hair does roll up around the axis of the wheels so every once in a while you have to pull it off and remove and clean the main roller wheels which is easy. It's still not bad at cleaning hair and fur etc.
-Does kinda bump into surface a bit hard for my taste but not enough to knock stuff down. I think it's just a mapping issue initially. I did notice it's more careful around that area the 2nd time.

In retrospect, I paid too much for many features I don't use or don't work.
So I recommend the Roomba, but a cheaper model would have been a better choice.

It does not replace regular cleaning because I do feel the slightest amount of grit on my feet now and then. If I really want the floor perfect, I have to either use the big vacuum or mop... which to be honest, lasts about as long as the next time I have to walk my dog. This just makes my floor more tolerable on a daily basis in my bare feet.
My unit cleans for an hour and then goes back for charging. It docks perfectly and I empty the canister each time. I did double side tape the dock to the floor, which is on the advice of my friend. I am not using the towers as the random pattern seems to work well enough.

(note: I have double sided tape preventing the base from moving when docking, since I don't have mine against a wall)

Expensive yes, but with allergies in the house, totally worth it.
