As far as weight goes, it can be easily maneuvered around with the built in handles and wheels. It feels pretty solid in construction as well when doing this, not like it will fall apart on you every time you may need to move it somewhere.
When it came to the delivery, yes the box was slightly beat up, but otherwise the actual machine itself was fine. It's pretty well packaged with hard styrofoam, as well as 2 long wood pieces to hold everything in place. There was 1 piece that was damaged, which doesn't really make any difference, but was the small black piece on the side rail. Not really sure what it's even for so otherwise didn't affect how it runs at all.
The heart beat sensor doesn't seem to work the best as well. Every time I would put my thumb on it. it read between 70-74 from starting to workout, to finishing. Once again, not a really bid deal, at least for myself. Those seem to never really work anyways...
As stated in other reviews, it does come with some pretty large stickers applied to it which are not the easiest to remove. After finally doing it, there was a huge amount of sticky residue left to clean off. After using some WD-40 and another degreaser, along with some elbow grease for 15-20 minutes, it cleaned up fine and looks great!
The running belt does move from left to right as well when not tightened properly. After following the instructions, it is actually quite easy to center it and when done correctly, you shouldn't have to mess with this to frequently.
Overall, for 1st time treadmill owners, we are very pleased with the purchase and the wife loves it! It has a great very modern look to it and when it comes to space, can really be put anywhere for how compact it is. Since it also has a little shelf like thing for her to set her tablet on and watch Movies/Shows while she works out, it makes the time go by really fast!
It was very convenient that it didn't require assembly, but it's a bit difficult to get out of the package. I was able to do it myself, but you might want to make sure you have someone close by just in case.
My main complaint is that the instructions are not clear at all. There are several different packets in the box, which makes it difficult which thing to do first. The general instructions booklet was not ordered in the best way either, putting things like "how to exercise" before "how to set up the machine." It mentioned lubing up the belt, but the instructions for this were extremely difficult to follow. I ended up accidentally throwing the belt completely off in alignment. It took 30 minutes to get it back to staying centered. Since then, I've only had one small problem with it getting a bit off, and it was easily adjusted.
I bought it because of the stowing capabilities, but so far I have actually just left it out and folded it down when I didn't want to use it. It's quite difficult to move, especially in my smallish apartment.
Otherwise, this is perfect for walking--I bought it to get some extra activity in other than going to the gym while I'm just watching things on my iPad. I have used it several times to jog on the highest setting (6 mph). It was be loud and seems shaky, but it has been fine for the distances I've run so far (2.5 miles).
I would highly recommend if you can afford to splurge a bit more on a compact home treadmill.
1. A carrier called "Pilot" is the company that takes care of the shipment. They will call you to arrange a delivery time when the treadmill is in your area (this applies to Super Saver Shipping also, don't be fooled into paying shipping costs by the "choose standard shipping" notice.) Make sure you tell the delivery guys to be careful, because a lot of people mentioned about the casing of the treadmill being cracked. This is due to the way the treadmill is "protected" in it's box.. it's more protected on one side than the other.. so if it's banged into something on the wrong side, you may end up with a cracked casing, or even a broken deck if it's dropped.
2. It's a little hard to get out of the packaging if you're doing it on your own.. I'm about 5 foot 4, and my 5 year old son helped, by moving the box when I held one end of the treadmill up and then the other side.. it would have been easier if I had decided to destroy the packaging, but I never do that just in case I have to ship something back.
Setup.
1. It's not plug in and go. I suppose to Horizon plug in and go means "No assembly required" (lol). First you need to lubricate the belt, you have to loosen it and apply the included silicon lubricant (enough for 2 applications is provided) to the deck of the treadmill. Then you have to re-adjust the belt. I noticed many people had issues with this. There is a trick to recenter your belt properly, and it tells you in the manual how to do this. But, I suppose if you're frustrated, and tired of trying to get it centered, you can overlook it in the manual. To fine adjust the belt, turn the treadmill on and set it no higher than 1mph. (don't get on the treadmill) and watch the belt, if it moves to one side, adjust the roller on the same side of where the belt is moving.. so if it's shifting more to the left, adjust the left end of the roller.. no more than 1/4 turn at a time. It does say to let the belt go for one full cycle before you adjust again. It actually takes more than this.. I'd let it go for a good 5 to 10 minutes. So once you have your belt where it's not going off center, and it's properly tightened (no slippage when you walk), you also have to let the treadmill run without you walking on it for about an hour to recalibrate itself.
Things you're not told in the description.
1. You should have a dedicated circuit for your treadmill. A way to do this without calling your electrician and paying a load of money, is to isolate a circuit in your home or apartment. You can do this by plugging something into every outlet and turning it on. Then go to your breaker box and start by flipping the first breaker (you may only have to do this if everything is not clearly labelled).. whatever shuts off are the items that share that circuit. So move everything off that circuit, or at least unplug it, and then use your treadmill on that circuit. Saves you at least 300 to 500 dollars. ^_^
2. Cord length.. this is something I wondered and wondered about, is it long enough for where I need to put it? Well, it's approximately 170cm. This measurement is only taking the actual cord into account, not the actual plug that goes into the wall and the one that goes into the treadmill.
3. The handle bar, and stabilizer bars (for storing it in an upright position) take a bit of muscle to pull down.
4. Deck has no cushioning. For me, this is not a negative or plus, last time I went out walking on the pavement it didn't have cushioning either. Wear a good pair of athletic shoes, and you'll be just fine. Deck is also appears to be made from black melamine (or possibly MDF, but based on it's thickness, I would say it's melamine). So if your deck ever does crack or break, you can actually find the materials to replace your deck. However, you will need something to reduce friction, as you may not be able to find it pre-coated with Merillite (a vertical-grade laminate), you can use an iron-on powdered wax, such as what is used for skis (on the newly made deck, NOT on your current deck or on the treadmill belt!).
5. Weight limit is set at 250lbs. I wouldn't take this too seriously, because the treadmill only weighs about 99lbs (which means less and thinner materials used in its construction) and the deck is about 1.5cm thick (about 3/4ths of an inch). If you're more than 210lbs (and that's kind of pushing it) you may want to opt for a more expensive, heavier treadmill with a thicker deck.
6. Not for running. This is a walking treadmill, even at 5'4" and 118lbs (my height and weight), I would not run on this treadmill.
7. Carpeting. If you have a high pile carpet, get a treadmill mat! If you have commercial carpeting, like the type you find in an office, you won't need a mat.
General.
As the driver unloaded the box, I saw that it was very damaged. The legs of the treadmill had popped out through the cardboard, one bottom flap of the box hung open, and one corner of the box had been ripped open, exposing the Styrofoam and plastic sheeting. I seriously considered not accepting delivery because of the condition of the shipping box, but with Amazon's excellent customer service in mind, decided to accept it. I took pictures of the damaged box.
The delivery fellow moved the box into my vehicle (a Toyota Matrix hatchback) and noted the damage on my shipping receipt. Upon arriving home after work, I slid the box out of my car and "walked" it through my porch and into my house. I'm a woman in my early 60s but didn't find the 117-pound box all that difficult to maneuver on level ground and up one step. I have carpeting throughout my home, so I slid a couple of furniture sliders under the box and moved it into my den.
Given all the damage to the shipping box, it was easy to open. Just don't believe that silly "unpacking the Evolve treadmill" video, because there's a lot of protective shipping material that must be removed and carted away. I was happy to see not a scratch on the treadmill.
Now, I had read Samuel Chell's great review, as well as the others, and even downloaded the manual before delivery so I could study it before the treadmill arrived. I saw that little tag advising to run the treadmill for 60 minutes before using it. Since the inspection sheet that came with the treadmill gave it full approval for tension, centering, etc., I figured that's where I would start.
After unfolding it, plugging it in and attaching the safety key, I pressed the "start." Immediately the belt started making loud rubbing noises as it moved and upon inspection, I saw that the running belt was jammed into the left side of the treadmill. I also saw that the belt was humped up at the rear roller bar, and actually about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch off the end of the roller. I followed the instructions to move the belt to the right, but that takes several rotations, so the belt was being frayed.
After about an hour, I finally got the belt centered so it stayed in one place. I figured that hour counted, so I tried the treadmill. It slipped - contrary to the statement in the manual that "the running belt has been properly adjusted at the factory before it was shipped."
The next day, I did the adjustments to tension the belt. After walking on the treadmill, the belt no longer slipped - but it now moved to the right. I would walk for 15 minutes, then stop to center the belt (not wanting the right side to be frayed), and walk another 15 minutes. The belt still moved to the right.
As this was Friday evening and there was no customer support, I went to the Horizon website and filled out the tech support request form.
On Monday I had a message from tech support on my answering machine. I called and explained the issues, starting with the damaged shipping box. The fellow was very helpful and made a point to note the fraying of the belt on my warranty information.
During our discussion he told me to tighten the running belt so that it was tight enough so when I slipped my hand under it, I could only fit my fingers up to the knuckles. This should be done on both sides.
He also noted that it takes at least a minute of the belt running at 1 MPH to fully move to position during the centering adjustments.
Since I could slide my hand under the belt, I figured this would be a good time to lube it before tightening it down. The bottle of silicone did not spray as shown in the manual, so I would up cutting off the tip and applying it with my hand. There has to be a better method.
I then tightened the belt per the technician's instructions, made a couple of centering adjustments, and it's been stable since. It would have been nice to have these important details included in the manual.
Like other owners, I think the heart rate monitor stinks because it doesn't work. The tether line on the safety key is too short. I used it a couple of times, but if I moved slightly back, it pulled the key off and stopped the treadmill. I have no need to try the speakers since I have a stereo and t.v. in the same room. When I press the "stop" button, the LCD display states SLOP. At least it doesn't read "SLOB."
That said, I love being able to fold down the treadmill and its compactness. There's plenty of room for me (I'm 5'5") to walk on the belt. I haven't tried to stand it up yet, but have no problems moving it around.
I don't mind the small increments to increase the sp
I bought this treadmill on March 8, 2012, and since then I've used it every-other day for 20-50 minutes at a time. I stand by my initial reactions below but I should add that in the time since I've written them, the board beneath the belt has broken twice. The first time it broke was within the warranty period and I had it replaced for free. It broke again yesterday and I'm out for the value of the machine unless I can find a way to repair it myself. It's just a piece of that pressed particle board underneath the belt. The weight limit is advertised at 250lbs if I remember correctly. I've never approached that weight; it's simply an inferior material they've used to support the belt, and it doesn't stand up to repeated use. But, this machine is probably not intended for people who jog consistently several times a week, and if you don't do that, or if you just want it for walking, that probably won't be an issue for you.
*Edit 02/18/2015*
I just repaired this treadmill using a piece of 3/4 plywood sanded smooth. It's stronger than the original particle board thing, and took me about 2 hours total. While I was at it, I also removed the heart monitor, which consistently causes errors in the electronics (for me, and many other users) - just straight up cut the wires off and threw it away! No more erroneous data to override the other information. Much better now. :) All in all, the treadmill is working better today than when I bought it, but as you can see I've had to work to keep it running, even though I have never exceeded its weight limit or operating instructions. If I had the space, I would have bought a more serious dedicated treadmill by now. This treadmill is probably only practical for people who aren't intending to use it rigorously.
-----------------------
I read all the reviews before making this purchase and because of them I was hesitant to follow through, but I've been using the treadmill for a few weeks now, and I'm glad the other reviews didn't scare me off.
First, let me say this - I've never used another treadmill before. That may not be the case with other people who review this machine critically. I'm sure it doesn't measure up to the full-size gym equipment out there. But, neither do I need it to. About me: I'm 24, male, 5'10", and 195 pounds. When I graduated high school six years ago, I weighed 165 pounds, and while I was not overly athletic, I could run an 8 minute mile and keep that pace over 20 minutes. I simply haven't exercised since high school. Three weeks ago I couldn't run a mile at all, and I decided I don't want to continue gaining 5 pounds every year. I started looking for a treadmill. I just wanted something compact enough to store in my small apartment (no floor space to leave it set up all the time), that I could use to maintain a jogging pace (meaning one foot on the ground at a time).
Many people have reviewed that a male my size would not be able to maintain a jogging stride on this size belt. I've had no problem whatsoever doing so. I stay in one spot with room to spare. The machine goes up to 6 MPH (a 10 minute mile, by the way). For me, a speed of 4-4.5 MPH begins a jogging pace. The first day I used the machine, I jogged at 4.5 MPH for 15 minutes and nearly fell over dead when I was finished. As of today, I can jog 20 minutes on the treadmill alternating between 5 and 6 MPH and feel good when I finish. That's all I wanted from this machine. I'll be able to sustain a jogging pace for 20 minutes every day. I would like it if the treadmill was able to go faster, but right now, I wouldn't have much use for speeds over 6 MPH anyway. I look at it this way: If 6 MPH should become too slow to satisfy my exercise, that's a good problem to have.
Also, a lot of people complained that this thing is too heavy to move as seen in the advertisements. I find that untrue as well. It weighs a little under a hundred pounds. That may sound like a lot for some people to lift, but you're not really lifting a hundred pounds. You're only picking up one end of the thing and wheeling it around. The motor and most of the weight is on the wheeled end of the unit. If you're frail and are buying this machine only to walk on, then toting it around might be strenuous. Anyone else should be able to handle it. It's less work than carrying a chubby 8 year-old to bed.
What is true in the other critical reviews, and the reason I give four stars instead of five, is that the electronics on this thing are nonsensical. No, the heart rate monitor doesn't seem to work at all. That wouldn't bother me, except that 90% of the time, the machine is inexplicably stuck on heart rate and will not display the statistics I do want to see, such as time and distance. How it decides to display heart rate, I have no idea - I don't even touch the sensor. 165 seems to be its favorite number. When I press the "change displ
After 10 minutes, though, the running platform settles down and works beautifully. I have to keep holding down the reset button to get the lights to move away from the heart monitor. That also takes several tries to get it to move from one measure to the other.
The other one I had last 4 1/2 years of almost daily use, so I hope this one does as well. Worth the price but does take at least two if not three people to maneuver it down steps if you have to toss it.
