It seems very rugged for it's price tag. If someone told me Nintendo built it and it was more expensive, I would have believed them.
The control sticks have a great feel to them, and although it has a wire, it is very long. It tends to twist up pretty easily, but the insulation still seems thick and durable.
But for people like me who don’t want to go through the hassle that comes with playing on an authentic GameCube controller (adapters, no home button or any of the other necessary buttons a switch controller would have) this is a must have. Mostly use it from Smash but i’ve also tested this out on other games like Rocket League and Super Mario Odyssey and it worked surprisingly well. Definitely wouldn’t play Breath of the Wild on this but still a pretty useful controller
I got this for my boyfriend for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, since he absolutely loves Melee. However while the controller works fine, we feel it could be better. After playing SSBU with this controller and an original Japanese GameCube controller with adapter, we found that the original GC controller could pick up smaller, finer movements unlike this one.
Again this controller is ok but if you're looking to be top of the game, I would recommend getting an original GC controller with an adapter over this.
Another thing the cable is pretty long so that's another good thing. Also I wished they would do more designs that's my only complaint.
The controller feels kind of cheap. It is very light and has a weird texture on the grips, almost like that of a nail file. The buttons and sticks are responsive and I don't see any input lag. The shoulder button functions are swapped for some reason so be aware of that before buying.
All in all, it's a pretty good controller for it's price, just be mindful of what you are getting and make sure it is what you are after.
So in conclusion,
The feel of the controller - 4/5
The functionality - 3/5
The price - 3/5
Overall - 3/5
There are a couple of things to note about the controller that aren't so much complaints, but things one should be aware of. The texture of the controller is a bit jarring at first and as others have pointed about, even rough. Personally, I got used to this and after about five minutes you don't even notice it. However, it isn't exactly pleasant upon the first grip. Another note is that because it's USB the Switch recognizes it as a Pro Controller. This is really odd in some cases because the shoulder buttons are flipped. To elaborate, looking at a GC controller from the face buttons, L & R are on the bottom with zL & zR on the top respectively. On a Switch Pro controller, it's the exact opposite. So games in which you use the bottom trigger buttons can feel really awkward. Depending on the game you can switch the control scheme to have inverted shoulder buttons which will solve that issue, particularly in Smash if you like having the top buttons grab as I do. However not every game will necessarily offer that option and it's important to keep that in mind. You're better off looking at a wired Pro Controller for larger more generalized use.
That being said, chances are you're looking at this for Smash or possibly Emulation (It does work on PC, tested Sonic Mania on Steam and with MAME). For that, it's perfectly fine and you even have the luxury of having the camera and home buttons, allowing easier navigation, unlike the regular GC controllers. Not to mention it's still wired, so no worrying about AA batteries like it's 2007.
To me, there are enough reasons to pick this up especially with how hard it is to get ahold of the official adapter and regular controllers. Unless you already have a number of GC controllers or really need four plugged in at once, then this is certainly a nice alternative to pick up.
*update*
New one works fantastic. 4 stats for failing expectations on the first one.
I primarily use this on pc to play some older games, works perfect. It is recognized in steam as a switch pro controller and fully allows configuration.
Taking it down a star becuase the problems with the control stick others had did arise, I got a replacement that did fix the problem, at least for now.
Update December 9 2018: I’ve noticed that there is quite a dead zone in the left joystick. It ignore the input if it tilts a little bit and also the bounce back is huge. If I flick the stick one way and let go, when the stick reaches center it’ll also go the other direction. I noticed while playing smash if I do a quick dash left my character will go right for a second. Not really a fan of this. Shame since I wouldn’t want any other controller since I hate the squishy triggers
My main complaint, however, comes from the faulty analog stick. It seems like it works fine at first, until you realize that if you are holding the stick in one direction and let go, occasionally it will register as an input in the opposite direction! This is incredibly important in games like Smash Bros, where if your character unexpectedly turns around, you might miss a grab or attack and leave yourself wide open.
It's really unfortunate that this controller is bad for the one game I really got it for, because the design is really nice. I might just return it and pick up one of the PowerA controllers instead, since I really do want a GC controller with all the extra buttons to make it a viable alternative to the pro controller.
[EDIT] Upon double checking that I wasn’t misinputting or anything, I went ahead and checked the calibration on the control sticks. It’s heinous. Moving in a careful, small circle is impossible due to how it’s set up, only straight up/down/left/right work properly. On both the C-Stick and Analog Stick, that problem and the above mentioned problem of incorrect inputs are a serious issue. I attached a video showcasing both calibrations. You can see it jump to the opposite input every so often. Even for a third party controller, quality should never be this low. Also, still can’t get the ‘hold shoulder buttons while plugging in’ to work. That’s a bad design decision, and it also isn’t even really mentioned anywhere! I had to find some random reviewer on YouTube to mention this, since they chose to swap the trigger locations for some reason and instead of just having a switch or something.
With that being said, its still a pretty good controller. Excellent for smash.
Speaking of, when trying to configure this controller with your copy of smash bros, the game will treat this as a "pro controller" since it has an additional button.
Edit: A couple more things to note is that the R/ZR buttons are swapped, which creates some confusion when playing. To fix this you simply hold the 4 shoulder buttons and it should swap them back to normal.
Also this does work for PC, I recently played DragonBall FighterZ using this controller. Its no too bad once you map the controls to your liking.
In regards to usage, its managed to hold up even with rigorous smash bros play.
There also might be another nice surprise. When I plugged it into my PC, Windows and Xpadder SEEM to show it supports Xinput. I have no Xinput-only games to properly test it with, but if it actually does, then that might be a very nice positive point to many.
EDIT: I checked the user manual online, and it actually does detail "PC usage" of the controller, even going so far as to call L/R LT/RT. I don't know of the other two do this too, but this could mean a lot for some PC users.
I love that I can use the controller for anything that doesn't use motion controls. Highly, highly recommend it.
As the headline says, it's a decent controller -- it truly is. I had a friend recommend it to me to buy so I did because I was getting into Smash and I felt that using joycons weren't going to cut it if I wanted to up my game as a Link main (LINKS RISE UP).
When I first got this controller, it was pretty amazing. The controller was pretty responsive and I liked the feel of of it. The body of the controller is fully made of plastic. The back of the controller has grip, which I liked, but that too was also plastic. The controller had good snapback and most of all buttons were functional. The controller actually kind of simulated a gamecube styled controller very well regardless. The durability of the controller, however, is a different story.
This is where I feel that I need to let you future purchasers know before making this purchase.
Over the span of a few month with rigorous use of the controller for Smash, the direction stick began to drift. At first, I didn't mind it since I was used to drifting joycons. Overtime, that got worse. The drift on this controller could put Tokyo Drift to shame. I couldn't do diagonal inputs anymore and I would do misinputs frankly because of the direction stick not inputting what I want it to do. This made doing tech kind of hard to do and it would frustrate me because what I expect to happen just did not happen at all.
I don't know if it was just my controller, but the c-stick is kind of dysfunctional. I use my c-stick for tilts in Smash and frankly, I would run up to someone and flick my c-stick and NO INPUT WOULD REGISTER. No matter how hard I flicked or multiple times I flicked the c-stick, the tilt attack would not come out. The times when it does, it'll be very late like two to three seconds afterwards. I felt it was kind of unreliable to use the c-stick.
Fast forward to 9 months in where the drifting got so bad that I had no control over it and it took banging my controller on a surface to get it to stop, the impossible happen. I MANAGED TO FRY MY ZR BUTTON. It was due to a little static I had on my finger, and when I picked up my controller, my ZR button got the brunt of it. It was that day forth that I knew the buttons were DIGITAL inputs instead of ANALOG inputs. My ZR button was my grabbing button and I had reprogram myself to use the grab button with ZL.
This was also the time I've learned about the turbo feature.
Not only did I play Smash, but I also play Asphalt 9, a racing game that uses ZR to accelerate. I was very conflicted when I found out that my ZR button just gave out due to a little static, but it was enough to fry the input of it. I used the turbo button for it until I learned that Asphalt had an auto-accelerate feature. Turbo mode had like three modes before toggling off, so I would adjust accordingly.
There's also some red/orange turbo mode feature as well? The manual tells us about it, but I really never cared for turbo that much. I saw it as a useless option unless this whole ordeal kind of went down.
Now since I had the turbo feature set to my ZR button (which somehow worked just for the turbo feature), sometimes in Smash, mashing out of grabs could enable the turbo feature if you're not careful. This lead to me grabbing, spotdodging, AND rolling repeatedly in battle (honestly I had one fight with a quickplay Luigi and that Luigi player waited so patiently for me to stop rolling and grabbing. I wish they knew what was happening. I have a video of it as well I believe.). Whenever I start doing that, I have to look at my controller to see if I accidentally triggered turbo mode somehow and have to stop it as quickly as possible. To me, the turbo feature was both a blessing and a curse. You could do without it, to be quite honest.
ON THE PC
The controller works very well for PC. You might have to remap your buttons, but it works nicely! It kind of registers as an XBOX controller for some reason. If your controller drifts, then expect to see some drifting on your PC as well. The control pad ( the + looking pad with the arrows) was something I used for TEKKEN 7. I honestly did not have much of a problem with it. I did not reliably trust using the direction stick; I felt more control in the control pad. Sometimes if I mash too much to tech off the ground in TEKKEN, the turbo button might trigger and release my rage art (because of course, it's tied to my ZR button), so I have to look down at my controller and stop turbo mode from turboing it up.
Oh, and the rubber on my controller is wearing out immensely. You might want to invest in getting rubber caps and good maintenance of the controller itself if you plan to have it for more than a year. I kind of rode this controller until the brakes fell off.
I feel that I covered everything I wanted, but I'll edit this if I forgot something vital to tell. I've debated giving this controller a 3 star due to some of the complications I have, but HORI is a pretty nice company and this is also my first controller for the Switch/PC. I'm currently using a new controller by PDP, which has analog inputs and generally more smooth and snappier, but I'll miss the feel that was my first controller.
TL;DR: Controller is nice, but the lifespan could be short depending how you use it. Plastic feel. It has digital inputs -- beware of static. Drifting may occur after heavy use. It's compatible with PC usage and games. It has a turbo feature, but very niche applications. Link is pretty cool. :)
The triggers on the back are really nice, specially if you are used to using the Pro Controller, the cable is long enough to play from quite far and the L and C sticks don't feel cheap at all.
My only issue so far is that the A button feels clicky and sometimes I miss some Jab 1 and Jab 2 combos while using Ken in Smash Ultimate. Feels like the A button gets stuck for a little bit or button press is not being registered properly. I'm not entirely sure if this is due to a defect or caused by sweating.
I've tried some of my friends original GameCube controllers and this doesn't happen at all, the A buttons feel smoother and more responsive.
The analogs feel excellent. They also click in as well, so you have extra inputs there are well. This controller has every single button that a regular Gamecube AND Switch Pro controller has, at a fraction of the price.
It has a mega-sized d-pad which is lightly better for retro games, but let's be honest, you didn't buy this to play retro games. It plugs into the Nintendo Switch dock via USB, so there is ZERO need for an adapter, which also means there is next to NO input lag and for a game as precise as Super Smash Brothers, this is a God tier move. You can also flip the ZL and ZR buttons using the buttons on the controller since L/R and XL/XR are NOT in the same place as an official Nintendo Switch Pro controller.
Also, the shoulder buttons click down right away unlike the analog buttons of the original Gamecube controller. I prefer this, no Nintendo Switch games really use analog buttons.
The back is also textured for a better grip. Not sure how many people will like this, but I liked this. And speaking of your hand, the shape is just like the original Gamecube controller.
But the best part is that these work for the Dolphin emulator to play Gamecube games on your PC/laptop. Just plug it in, go to your input settings and you should be good to go.
My only con with this controller is that is it really light. And therefore feels a little cheap as a result.
Overall, this controller is 6 stars and beyond and HORI continues to show up and show out with these amazing controller for Nintendo consoles. No issues at all, and I will be buying for my PC gaming friends and Switch owners.
This controller earn an extremely high recommendation from me! :D
