(tldr; Not a grey market camera, it’s a real Hikvision US version. Hkvision does not give the end customer support, training, or warranty – that is only given to distributors. If you are comfortable with your own install skills, and getting warranty from the seller, then this is a great product. If not, contact a reputable security company who will install and warranty the product.)
Having purchased numerous Hikvision cameras I offer the following tips and info:
1. Understand that this is not a "plug and play" product. Do not expect to simply plug in an ethernet cable, install the software, click an icon and simply click "record". You may need to have a minimal understanding of configuring IP addresses and ports.
2. Computer - Understand that when you are recording HD video you need to have either a dedicated NVR or Computer with Decent Memory, fast hard drive (Surveillance Drives or SSDs), and a good video card.
3. The camera needs POWER - if you are planning on mounting be sure you know how you are going to get power to the camera. You can either power the camera with a power outlet (12v DC plug is usually NOT included) or PoE (Power over Ethernet). Virtually everyone uses PoE since you already have the ethernet cable going to the camera, you might as well send the power with it. DO NOT EXPECT MOST HOME ROUTERS AND SWITCHES TO BE ABLE TO SEND POWER TO THE CAMERA. You will probably need a PoE injector.
4. What's with the US Version - Warranty - Support - etc? What is a grey market camera?
This is where people get confused and tend to give Hikvision products bad reviews because they don't understand what they are buying.
All Hikvision products are made in China. The U.S. Version simply means that the menu, software, firmware, ROM files are all in English. It is the US date system, English words, English software, and if the backup ROM files ever get restored they will also be in English.
If it says US Version it is probably NOT a grey market camera. A grey market camera is a “real” Hikvision that was intended for a different market (Usually China). These enter the US market usually because a Chinese seller can easily obtain the Chinese market camera and then overwrite the firmware with an English version. The problem is that if the original “hard coded” firmware is restored, often by a firmware update that fails, the U.S. customer is left with a camera that has a Chinese menu system or Chinese language.
Tips to avoid a “grey market” camera – be cautious of a seller that ships from China. Beware of phrases such as “custom firmware” or “English Firmware” or “English Version”.
You can tell if you have a grey market camera by looking at the serial number. If the product was originally a non us version it will have “CH” in the serial number.
As for the warranty:
Hikvision products are supposed to be sold by the distributor to VARs (value added re-sellers) such as security companies and large clients. These are the companies that support the camera – not Hikvision. The products on Amazon are almost certainly all from general re-sellers who sell to the public. Which means the camera is a "real" US version Hikvision camera - but all your technical support (little to none) and warranty (probably 1 year) come from the seller - not the manufacturer. However, you are paying a LOT less than you would buy buying directly from a distributor. Even Amazon is not a distributor - they are a re-seller.
Hikvision will only give support and warranty to their "authorized distributors" and "direct purchasers" they do not give support to ANY end user. They don't sell to the public - to be a direct purchaser you need to buy in bulk / volume. The buyer is responsible for his own technical support and knowledge on how to install; THE WARRANTY IS FROM THE SELLER not the manufacturer. I have never seen an authorized distributor listed as a seller on Amazon.
If you are still uncomfortable with buying, installing, or the warranty. You do have other options. You can buy through a reputable VAR (such as a security company) who will install and warranty the product. You can also buy a rebranded camera - Hikvision is not just a brand, they are also the manufacturer and there are a lot of companies that sell the exact same camera under their own private label brand.

The problem is an over-zealous security feature to prevent unauthorized access. The camera basically "dies" after 5 or 6 unsuccesful login attempts. There is a convoluted process to reset the password, but requests are denied if the camera is not purchased from an approved distributor.
The problem with this system is that these "approved" cameras are prohibitively expensive, for the same camera available to the rest of the world at more reasonable prices. The camera quickly becomes useless for U.S. consumers who are shopping for competitive products.

No Thanks.

Beware that you as a consume cannot return a camera to Hikvision. Here is what their own web site says:
"RMA Inquiry: Prior to returning product(s), please reach out to your direct point of purchase for return options. Hikvision only accepts returns from direct purchasers and/or authorized distributors..."
I tried to return a camera to the seller on Amazon - SI Family Shop - and they directed me to the web site. Now they are non-responsive.
So.....buyer beware!

Before I spent even more money by purchasing an NVR, I decided to just get the cameras and run them POE into a switch and into the network. By doing so, I am able to test the cameras without the extra expense. Now that the cameras have been tested, I may get an NVR so I can run the cameras at their highest resolution for an even sharper image. Anyhow, the cameras work really well, and has a backend configuration that is quite extensive. The only downside is that the cameras are still set to use ActiveX for parts of the configuration. ActiveX is dead, Hikvision! It's time to do something about that, you think??

These cameras are not compatible with the foscam cloud service so I decided to try them with program on my Synology NAS (Surveillance Station) and after alot of trial and error and time reading forums everything is working great. Once the camera was setup with a static IP I didn't have to touch it again, all of the issues I ran into were configuration issues with the recording software.
The first image is the Foscam at 720, the second is Hikvision at 4MP

I picked Vigilant Depot as the vendor.
As for the camera itself, I prefer the Turret over the dome. They have much better night vision range, and you don’t have to clean them that often. Anytime it rains hard, the domes get water spots that cause fuzziness while in night mode. The Turret does not have that issue.

Note- it would be best if you order the flat or angle bases that fit these cameras.
Part# DS-1281ZJ-M ABM for angled
and Part# DS-1280ZJ-M CBM for the flat base
It allows you to tuck the wiring into the base and give a good water tight mount. It also allows for the camera to be spaced away from the surface where it is being mounted to, like Walls or Eaves where the light will reflect off and give a whiteout affect.
Buy more that what you need, you can always return unused unopened boxes, within the return time frame.
They are not easily stack-able. You will have to use self-tapping screw to screw the base to the bottom cover. There are no holes to line up, so just line up the edges and screw them to together. I also recommend using plumbers putty to fill the hole at the wire exit point of wall or eave to keep a tight seam from the environment and Bugs.
On another Note, don't put the bezels on to quickly. You will be adjusting these camera over the course a a day or two to get the best view.
Did I say these were wide wide WIDE angle.
This is not a paid review, But I do install camera system on the side.

Regarding the US/Chinese version ordeal.
I've been reluctant to try Hikvision because of the US/Chinese version deal. I bought mine from "Vigilant Depot" and everything is as described. Menus are in English, i haven't tried to update the firmware yet but all seems ok.
