Grohe is supposedly a high end company for faucets, handles, and all plumbing trims. And their stuff is beautiful, which is why I bought tons of it for our new home.
But the rough in valve, along with many of the items we ordered, came defective. And to replace a rough in valve requires ripping out the wall and tiles. Do NOT Buy.

MAKE SURE THE PIPING BETWEEN THE valve and the tub spout beneath is copper, or galvanized, NOT pex. Pex has a smaller diameter, and not enough flow to pass water through it. This means the water will overflow out your shower head. I made the same mistake. You can use pex for the left, right, and even top connection, but not hte bottom one. The instructions don't emphasize this enough. the instructions call for galvanized or copper to the top and bottom.

Update: i bought 4 of these for (4) bathroom remodels. The one that went in to service first failed already. The pressure balance cartridge had to be replaced, the handle would just spin and not shut the water off. (make sure you know where you main shut off is). I hope my other 3 showers won't fail.
update 2: the above was user error, however 1 of 4 valves did fail at the ball valve (screw driver actuated) part.

This is a universal mixer valve that is designed for use with a tub and shower or with a tub alone (comes with brass disc to block flow to shower head in bathtub only installation). I had it sweat soldered to copper pipe as I live in the country where there is a healthy rodent population and did not want them nibbling on PEX.

A word of caution. With my 2x4 wall framing the distance between the valve body and the Grohe tub spout was very short and needed a 1-1/8 or shorter brass nipple. My plumber had run out of 1" brass nipples which are only available at true plumbing supply houses. Forget about finding them at a local hardware or big box store. The plumber used a 1-1/2" brass nipple and it was almost good enough but I ended up buying a 1-1/8 nipple on Amazon and replacing the longer one myself.

We bought this for the brand and reputation. Unfortunately we've noticed that once you move the lever to a specific temperature - very little variation is offered if you want to raise or lower it. In most cases - I've just gotten to the point of turning it off and then adjusting it from the off position - especially if the shower is too hot. - which is a pain. I doubt if I would by this particular valve again ( every fixture in my house is Grohe).
