Очень плохая модель
- - Из трёх литровых канистр с маслом,одно оказалось с большим,просроченным сроком годности.И это за такие огромные деньги.Я что то не понял.где указанно что отзыв нужно оставлять только о товаре,а не о недобросовестных продавцах на яндекс маркете?

Superbly written and a really enjoyable read... but no pictures
This book is really the story of General Motors... and the author tells a great story. But the Kindle version that I read has no pictures of the cars that Harley Earl designed, so you'll need to keep a smartphone or internet-enabled tablet handy so that you can look up the models referred to. Earl's greatest invention was lowering the passenger compartment so that it sat between the two axles, instead of top of it. This made cars appear closer to the ground and sleeker to look at... but whether his over-the-top 1940s and 1950s styling has stood the test of time is another matter.

Have always liked American car designs and of course Harley Earl was the best designer by far....disappointed that there are so few photos of his masterpiece

When dealing with designers and cars, one would expect more pictures ... but, that some times requires licensing fees to who owns the pictures and such, adds expense. Still, us car guys, we want to see our kinetic art. That said, is a good read. Learn a bit about his early days, who influenced him, how some luck helped. If you are a history buff and not a car guy, you will enjoy the writing. If you are a car guy and not a history buff, still worth a read. Me, I am both. I have been lucky enough to have met many of my childhood and adult heros and, been able to sit one on one and visit with many and, become friends with some. Reading books, written, like this one, make me feel, that I wish I had been able to meet and talk with Harly Earl, one on one, not just about what made him famous but, about things friends talk about. Maybe, like my tea with more sugar, no mustard on my burger. Watch him work and yet, not be talking about work.

This is a well written and fast moving, professionally produced assessment of the 1950;s car era and Harley Earl's ability to dictate the major trends. Ultimately it led to excess and disaster in the form of the rapid growth of European sales in the US as a result of cars simply getting too big for many city dwellers.
The rapport between Earl and Alfred P Sloan is rather surprising given their personalities but explains Earl's rise to power within GM which he could not have sustained without Sloan. That might not have been a bad thing given modern styling but the thing was Earl was a product of his era.
The author does not duck the sometimes negative results from the Earl era while remainging respectful and admiring of his greatest successes. The essence was that Earl was a stylist rather than an engineer and there was a price to pay because of it eventually.
HIghly recommended even for the general reader and a must for the car buff

I really would like to give 5 stars to this very good book. The story is great and the author has good writing and make you go through the time with great fluidity. However, two things bored me (1) it’s a book about auto and design without a single photo. I had to keep Google open most of the time to picture the models and styles mentioned in the book. (2) and this was the most annoying part: the author has a political agenda that he pushes almost the entire book, insisting in judge the 30s, 40s behavior through the lens of 2020.
Anyhow, it is a very good book, that tells a great and important story of our age.

What a good book! He really did his research! I'm just not sure why in the world he, or the publisher didn't invest in more images of the fantastic cars he was describing. His writing was great in trying desperately to describe the cars, and features he wrote of, but you really need to "SEE" the stuff! There is another great book on Harley Earl: Harley Earl by Stephen Bayley. An older study, but includes many more pictures. These two books should be read consecutively if you want a real thorough feel of this great, and interesting subject.
Mr. Knoedelseder did a fantastic job of describing the evolution of style in cars; a great history of the American industry; and many, almost sub-biographies, of the other stars of Detroit. But why, why so much work, and so few pictures??? Great job Bill! I look forward to reading some of your other efforts. Thanks so much for your research! Dave (in Colorado)

Harley Earl grew to be a legend within General Motors as the head of the styling department. He ruled his designers whimsically and ruthlessly -- even though he himself couldn't draw! But he had his finger on the pulse of the American car-buying public and he gave them what they wanted, including iconic fins on the Cadillac. Thus the title of the book.
It is very well written and illustrated with black and white photos. It's a picture of a bygone era and the men and women who peopled it.

I'm a car guy, and thought I knew a lot about Harley Earl. "Fins" was a "reset" on what I thought I knew, rich with detail about Earl's family history, upbringing and start in the industry before GM. This is an engaging read that will keep the attention of anyone who enjoys history, but particularly those who love cars, for whom its a "must read".

Captivating from page one. The author chronicles the improbable rise of Harley Earl from humble beginnings through the birth of the movie culture in Hollywood to the pinnacle of success in America's biggest company. There are hundreds of stories about the temperamental Earl and his marketing genius. This volume sorts them out in an engaging way.

Harley Earl was the father of automobile design and styling and responsible for many automotive classics. This book was a through history of his entire life from the early days in Hollywood to establishing the styling studios for GM. A very good read for anyone interested in classic cars or product design in general.

Harley Earl retired just as I hired in to Chevrolet engineering. During my career with GM I worked very closely on many projects with the Chevrolet studios. It is interesting that the next in line to head Styling, Bill Mitchell, was in many ways similar to Mr. Earl. Only half way thru the book but enjoying the history of GM.

Lots of great insights into Harley Earl and GM, but also the auto industry in general. As a Michigan native who grew up in the shadow of Willie Run airport I really enjoyed the historical viewpoint. I remember seeing the GM card in the Windows at the Willie Run plant as a kid.

The book is a masterful blend of automotive and social history. GM for a long time was the engine for profound change in America. From the defining 1940-1945 period through the turbulent 1960s, GM Styling guided the aesthetics of American modernism.

This was a better book, with a broader point of view, than I was expecting. It had new insights for me on everybody at the top of the Big 3, but also many people I hadn't heard of. It's an easy read, too. I highly recommend it.

I am a GM Retiree, so curious about Earl. He was largely regarded as a jerk, so it was no surprise that the book confirms that. Some of his successors were even worse, insisting on parking their Ferraris in the company garage. At least Earl had his own exotic cars built by GM.

A personal and business "map" of Harley's life as well as a historic story of the birth, growth and maturing of the auto industry including the social environment of the various periods.
Well written, flowing layout and easy reading.
A surprise! You will not be disappointed.
More pictures would have added to the enjoyment.
