Update: have had the head for about a month. It seems to have developed some sort of what sounds like static sometimes. Sounds like a loose speaker wire crackle. But it makes the sound with zero volume so I guess it's the head itself. After having it on for a few minutes warming up it may pop and go away and it's dead silent like it should be even with volume cranked. I can live with it for now.
This by far is the best hands down for reproducing those signature tones at lesser volume with full head room.
And....., if that isn't enough, you can connect to your computer and internet and modify all the incredible amps to just exactly what you want.
For around 500.00 cab and head, you'll have nearly everything at your finger tips.
Did I forget to mention the JCM and other amps also as part of the selections.
Make no mistake, this is an actual driver tube amp with incredible voice modeling driven by an actual preamp tube.
The Buck Stops Here for the Money!
For the price of a high end stomp box you can have a great sounding tube amp that comes with a 5 year warranty. The USB editing option brings some serious versatility to this product. I have multiple cabinets so this head version is a perfect solution for me.
It's a very good value in guitar amplification.
I had to sell this amp and cabinet about 2 years ago, along with some of my other equipment 3 guitars, effects etc. , and have repurchased the amp, cabinet, American select strat mahogany HSS, BOSS ME-25, basically everything I had to sell, I now have again. So there was a time that I was not using this amp.
That said, when I was ready to buy another amp, I came upon a used Super Champ XD combo at a rather great price, so I picked it up thinking it would be the same as the updated X2 combo and/or Head. Being overzealous about the price, I realized later when I was home, that it did not have a USB port to use with fender fuse. I knew this was the older model of these amps, but thought they all came with a USB and fuse, l was able to return it thankfully. Long story short, I didn't like the XD, not just because of the lack of USB and fender fuse, to me, it just didn't sound as good. I know they're are a lot of XD users who prefer that model to the X2, but this of course is just my opinion.
The XD, as far as I remember, had more generic voices, Like blackface, tweed, hot rod, british etc. which seemed to be less concise IMO. On the X2 head(i haven't ever used the X2 combo) it has voices more tuned to specific models. Like super champ clean, 65 ' princeton, 65' Twin, 65' Deluxe, and Tweed Bassman, which to me is one of best voices on the X2, and one that I use quite often. But it's more of a specific tone, rather than just being based on certain models. Not that there's any problem with that, and I'm not even sure how close most of these voices are to original amps anyway, but I found it hard to get the tone I had been used to with my first X2. I messed around with the XD for a few days, I did feel like I tried to give it a chance, but it just seemed to be lacking in the tones and sound I was expecting. It might have just been that I was used to the X2 already and was expecting the same, and was just disappointed when it wasn't. I also didn't like the 10" open back speaker. I really noticed the difference with the 12" closed cabinet, and different speaker models as I understand. To my ears, I just feel the X2 head and cabinet sound much better than the XD combo. Add the Fender Fuse, and it offers so much more flexibility, that I just feel like the X2 has much more to offer. I also feel the X2 has better tones out of the gate then the XD, I could live happy without ever using the fuse program and still absolutely love the factory voices in this amp.
I'm using my Fender American select mahogany HSS, and an Ibanez AS53 semi hollow body, and both just sound absolutely awesome with this amp. Loads of natural sustain and tube tone, nice sparkly highs, and on the Bassman or 65' Deluxe setting, nice booming lows. The tones are so rich, and clear, like the Bassman for example, it can get boomy hand have lots of bass, but it's not muddy. It just sounds right, the best way I can explain it really. Even my girlfriend who doesn't know much about guitars or amps, has said a few times, wow that amp sounds great. It's just got that great Fender sound, and is so easy to customize. Tube amps are just so great sounding, it's why some 70 years later, it's still the go to amp type. Solid state amps, even with reverb, and gain etc. it can sound so dry, where the notes die as soon as you hit them, or when a SS amp tries mimicking the tube sound, it winds up more digital instead. This amp just sings, low gain, high gain, clean, dirty, it just sounds fantastic.
I will say, if you are looking for really shred like gain toes, i'm not sure this will be the best for you. I know there's a Vox and British type voice, but I'm not sure it nails it. I don't really use those tones, so I can't really say if they are good or not, but i'd say try it first if that's the tone you're after. I do know many users have said the Super sonic voice is very good, and quite customizable with Fuse and has the dual gain stages that make it more versatile. Fuse allows for some advanced amp settings too, like bias and SAG, so they're are quite a few options to get the sound you're after. It also allows you to use a certain amp, say a 65' twin with a different virtual cabinet, so it will sound like a twin played through a bassman cabinet. I'm going to include some screenshots of fuse to show it better.
You can save new voices, and configure the 16 voice knob to whatever new voices you want in what number. so if you like factory # 4 voice, and want a new voice at #5 so you just have to jump up one, it's easily done. The footswitch(not included) allows you to go between the channels. Channel one is clean, so you can hit the switch and jump to whatever voice you want to have ready, as well as turn the effects on and off. But it's all what you want out of it. For me, I play more on the cleaner side, but also with some more natural overdriven tube tone. which this amp just does fantastic with, as well as beautiful, beautiful cleans.
I also just love the size of it, as well as the fact you can take the head with you, and play through another cabinet or system, and have all your tone right there with you. pretty awesome when you are just playing at an open mic or something.
Just wanted to update this review, to say that I still love this amp. After trying the XD and a few others, like the blackhart 5 watt tube head, and some others, which I did like, though none seemed to be even half as versatile at the X2. I think this should be on everyone's short list of 15 watt tube amps if that is what you're in the market for. You should at least try it out. It's a fantastic amp.

I'm a non pro/casual guitar player, been playing for almost 25 years. I play an American Select Mahogany HSS strat, and an Epiphone Flametop Dot through this amp. It's made in mexico which allows them to sell it at a rather stellar price, although I would have paid more for a US built amp. I couldn't find it in the store, so I ordered it from GC, and had assumed it was American made, so I was a little disappointed when it came and I found it wasn't.
I have yet to install or configure the Fuse program that allows you to tailor the sound of the effects and presets through the computer, which is a very cool feature to begin with. Since I've only played through the presets that come standard I can only comment on them.
I play alot of blues/rock/classic rock type music, besides my own. I am very happy with the sounds I get out of this amp. The tube tone is just great, and the effects and amp models are very good IMO. It's like having a few different amps to play with at your fingertips.
I will say I am not a tone snob, or someone who thinks you can only get a good sound through a hand wired, hand built, 15K boutique amp or effect.
It has 16 different amp models, most of the high gain models don't get used, and I find myself using the Tweed, Bassman, Twin, or Deluxe presets most of the time. I really love the reverb that comes with it as well, and can dial in as much or as little as I want. Because I tend to play a rather clean sound with little effects, this is where the tube tone really shines. Alot of solid state amps these days can mimic tube tone, but this starts with a great tube tone and builds from there. Being able to play clean, yet have alot of sustain and depth is what I was looking for in an amp, and this little guy does it well, add that to the fact that you can change models, and effects, and it makes it a very versatile little amp.
I also love the size of it, it's bigger than a combo with the cabinet, but not so big it becomes difficult to move, or take to practice, plus if you didn't mind playing through a different cabinet, or house system, the head is nice and small, and allows for you to take it with you so you always have your tube tone to go. The footswitch is a nice addition as well, although not included, allowing you to change channels, as well as turn the effects on and off.
The price can not be beat, less than 500, for the amp and cabinet, and IMO worth every penny. Try one out if you can, you'll probably love it as much as me. If you do order it, don't worry about the shipping, it was VERY well packed in very strong boxes that will make sure it gets to you in perfect condition.
***UPDATE***
I wanted to edit this review, as I have been spending some quality time with this amp lately.
I recently Started using the Fender Fuse program and I have to say it's very very cool. It doesn't really give any new sounds or amps per se, but allows you to configure the ones it has, any way you want. So if you like the Bassman amp, but want to tweak it with some compression, different distortion, or even a wah stomp box, you can do that, and you'll see the little virtual stomp box on the screen and then adjust the parameters of each effect, like it was sitting in your effect floor box. You can fix the chain of the effects in the order you like, and end with a post amp effect as well. When you click the adavanced amp button it brings you to the amp control, with all the buttons that the actual head is missing, so it really allows alot of user control. All of this is super easy to use, you basically point and click to build it the way you like, and it will adjust the sound you hear through the amp while you're doing it, and even has a tuner you can bring up on the screen and use.
There are some presets you can download and try out, then you can scroll through the list you downloaded and jump right to the next preset by clicking up or down on the arrows. You can save and post the presets you build and share them too, but I haven't built or saved any yet. It has a way to download back up tracks and play them while you practice, but I haven't done anything with that either. I am still finding new things to do with it, as well as try and find my "go to" sound for each guitar.
I have been playing my Epiphone Dot Flametop through this amp, on factory preset 4 which is the Bassman, with a little spring reverb, and all I can say is it's like molten lava! Great sustain, without overbearing harmonics or too much gain. Sounds awesome for the type of guitar I play, bluesy, laid back with alot of double string bends and slides and hand tremolo.
I am still working on getting that "perfect for me" or "go to" sound with my American Select Mahogony Strat. I tend to look for that more clean Fender sound with my Strat, and with my Strats S-1 switching and allowing the series or parallel wiring of the pick-ups, it gives me so many variations that I tend to get a little off course, but that's the fun of it.
The more I listen and play through this amp the more I LOVE IT! The Fuse is a really nice feature to have as well. I urge you to try it out or to just pull the trigger and buy one if you like Fender tube amps, cause this one is great IMHO.
UPDATE:
I found that this was such a perfect practice amp for me that I bought a second one to set-up a stereo pair. They are a permanent feature in my living room. I custom built two cabinets for use with them because I wanted the rigs to match. I got rid of the brownish-gold aged fender grille cloth and replaced it with the classic Fender silver cloth. Looks much better to me. As a stereo pair they are amazing. I am running two Celestion Vintage 30's in one of them and Celestion Greenbacks in the other. Best practice rig I have ever owned. This allows me to keep my expensive gear stored away until it's time to take it out to jam.
