Not an alien/action movie
Great movie. I find people either love it or hate it. I think it suffered from poor marketing. It was marketed as an alien movie, which it is not. It's a philosophical movie that happens to have aliens in it. I compare it to Contact and Inception. It one of those movies that by the end has you wondering what you just saw. After the first time I watched it I thought I understood it but I wasn't positive. I had to see it again to be sure. Now I love sharing it with others and discussing it afterwards. If you want a movie you don't have to think about, this isn't for you. If you want fast paced actions and explosions this is not for you. If you like to discuss your movies afterwards, this is great. I would add that some of the scenes were rather dark and hard to see and I missed some of the dialogue during the helicopter scenes but overall the visuals were great and I'm not opposed to watching with closed captioning. The positives far outweigh the negatives with this film.

I have now watched this movie four times. I start to understand more and more each time.
I do my best to concentrate on each word. This movie is spooky amazing.
The short story by Ted Chiang (American) is one of 8 stories in his collection original called: "Stories of Your Life"
I am told that the short story will fill in a lot of the gaps in the story and will give you a better understanding.
I'm going to get my copy here at Amazon. I want to better understand the movie.
A very intellectual film. Not just an ordinary Sci-Fi movie. This film is a gift to movie lovers.

An imaginative and enjoyable hard sci fi moive
Excellent alien encounter movie, in the vein of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" but more imaginative and deep. The movie is based on a science fiction story by Ted Chiang, a well-known and awarded writer. The focus on communication difficulties with advanced and non-hostile aliens is appropriate given that alien species likely have very different reference points (natural, historical, cultural) for language and conversation. The time travel aspect is a key feature that explains the aliens' purpose although it evolves and becomes more clear as the story unfolds. Minds patient enough to pay attention and think will be amply rewarded. Unlike some of the recent science fiction films, the ending is uplifting. The actors do a great job of portraying the characters and the movie special effects are satisfying.

Wonderful!
Much like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Fountain, the back-and-forth flashbacks can be a bit confusing until the "big wrap-up', when everything is made clear.

I love the use of the 'non-linear time' concept, and I'm glad they didn't dwell to much on a "change the future" tangent (i.e. multiverse)- even if you know your child will die prematurely, there's not much you can do but endure. I absolutely LOVED the unification gala scene, but was a bit confused by the heptapod' flag- I half expected an alliance between humans & 'pod, but was pointing more towards a 'unifying' language maybe? The only thing I would've like to have seen is the fate of the 'pods- why did they dissolve/vanish? Was it self-destruct, or return to their own time 3,000 years [our past/future? their standard of time is the same as ours? ] to await the aid of humans? A sequel would be nice, but one's own imagination makes this film all the more enjoyable!

This is not an action movie; it is a movie for people who think outside of the box
The spacecraft are reminiscent of Magritte’s floating objects, setting a surrealistic spin on the story from almost the outset, but there are also shots that recall the obelisk in 2001 A Space Odyssey, and its journey through time.
I adore language because each one I learn gives me new ways of perceiving the world. I rejoice in surrealism because it, too, provides new ways of perceiving reality. I love time because, to me, it is simultaneously linear, cyclical, but also exists in frozen bubbles; if one uses the linear aspects of time to perceive the cyclical and bubbled time pockets, new methods of interpretation become possible.
This movie is like that; it doles out dribbles and dabs of information that explain how to understand and perceive what has come before and what is to come in new and enlightening ways. It’s a very recursive movie, defining itself in circular ways by the very shape of those concepts.
It’s brilliant, just brilliant.

Great sci-fi movie, heavy on the sap
I really liked the way this movie depicted aliens in the sense of being truly otherworldly creatures with advanced technology and inscrutable ways of thinking. It also VERY accurately depicted the realistic reaction of humans - so much so that we could probably use this as an excellent modern starting point for how to respond as a species.
OTOH, the emotional component was a bit overplayed. It doesn't have to go on and on and on....the audience gets it! The target audience for this movie is decidedly cerebral, so it's not really necessary to bang away on that angle.
Overall a good movie...and it could have been great with some editing. It would be interesting to see a prequel or a sequel to this...if that's even possible, considering the story.

Amazingly relevant
AWESOME movie. COMPLETELY relevant to our world today AND the horror man has created when it is run by those who seek to attack first and possibly question later. But understanding is the last thing that matters for many heartless, self-centered and cruel people these days, isn't it? It hits home on a central topic - if we could tell the future, would we be better people? Maybe we could ALL try to gain more understanding of those who are different from us, rather than assume that their intention is bad simply because it means we must all share this planet and its resources together.

Not what you may think...
I went into this knowing very little about what this movie was about (obviously aliens..duh). I think I only seen 1 trailer for it as well and I was pleasantly surprised at how well I liked it. Like others have stated, this is no Independence Day so don't go into it thinking that.
First, I have to say that I'm a big action, scifi and horror fan and absolutely loved...LOVED Aliens and the original Alien movie. They are some of my all time favorite movies. This movie, however, is nothing like them either... LOL but it is still a very good movie in it's own right. It kept me interested in it the whole time...which can be hard to do with some movies out there. Here's looking at you District 9. You have to go into it with an open mind and not try to think it's like those other movies with frickin' laser beams, destruction and "Welcome to earf" lines we all love! That was no typo, I said earf...lol
In closing, don't watch Alien:Covenant...watch this one instead and feel better about your life afterwards :)

Forced plot and tropes galore
Language, what it can do, and the power that it holds is the main theme in the movie. However, it fails to hold any other language other than the alien one to any respect. Many of the plotpoints are painstakingly twisted to fit their story. Like how there is not a single Mandarin speaker on an American military base that is communicating internationally other than the main character. Major bits of information are randomly dropped, never to be visited again. So much of it is very "trop-ey", the nice white woman who can do anything through compassion, and the with blatant sinophobic tropes peppered throughout. Worst of the latter was diminishing the culturally significant mahjjong game into a weapon, completely coping out of any Mandarin translations, even though the language plays a major part of two of the movies biggest turning points, and (most cringe-worthy of all) having the war-hungry (of course they made him war-hungry) Chinese military general refer to a mysterious and unnamed "superior". This is bad enough for any movie, but worse when it's one about valuing language and communication. The lack of self-awareness becomes downright laughable when a Colonel of the American Military compares the aliens (not once, but twice) to Western colonizers of the past. Even going as far as to use the term "more advanced race".
What you saw in the trailer about the aliens "getting the different countries to work together" never actually happens. All that happens is that one person, the main character, learns the language, and writes a book to teach others. Also, the aliens casually drop that they'll need the humans' help in 3 millennia, but that is never revisited again.
The cast is solid, and the plot twist is creative and had me on the edge of my seat, but everything else about this movie was at best disappointing, and at worst, downright cringe-y.

Solving an interstellar puzzle solves so much more, and brilliantly
A linguist is tasked with solving an interstellar puzzle. We are drawn to care for her immediately, because we see scenes of her daughter being born, living, and dying too soon as the mom (Amy Adams) narrates the introduction to the film – and then we see her alone, with no sign even of the child’s father – and then the aliens arrive, 12 huge ships scattered around the world, hovering just off the ground.
The story unfolds gently but relentlessly, with this viewer fully engaged. The linguist is recruited to try to communicate with the aliens, figure out what they’re saying and why they’re here – before people’s overwhelming anxiety and fear of the unknown bubbles over into violence.
This story of trying to unravel a puzzle and understand the alien has rarely been told so compellingly, with such a grand payoff. I think of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, of E.T. Good movie. Hard to watch, because it was too blurry, dark and bluish tint
While it was a good movie, it makes you think about how we perceive them and how an alien civilization would perceive us, are we warlike or peaceful, and are they here to wipe us out or help us . . . makes the premise of the movie very thought-provoking.
What I seriously disliked about the movie is that the entire movie seemed to be shot through some sort of low-light, blue-haze filter. It seemed out of focus and blurry and was very annoying.
I even stopped the movie ten minutes in and went to YouTube to see if it was my computer, but finally realized that the movie was deliberately shot in this way, and it really, really distracted from the experience of watching a good movie.

Not the usual shoot 'em up Scifi schtick--thank the maker
In order to fully and deeply appreciate a work of art, philosophy, spirituality, I believe one must approach it without expectation so that there can be any possibility of letting it in, and which, if one does, one can experience the deliciously surprising gift of something quite unexpected, a revelation of sweetness that one can swim in and be infused by, so rich with meaning and possibilities; Mystic in nature...profound. When I saw the ads for this film, I thought "Oh, another us versus them story or they invade we fight them off to save the day"...Yawn. However, I read the synopsis and thought "This might be different, after all I cannot imagine Amy Adams acting like Sigourney Weaver in Alien". I am really glad I saw it. Thank you to the deep thinkers who made this; I was very moved. Non Linearity...coool.

liked the movie.. nuf said, service was prompt but the picture seems about 10 or 20% dull.
i checked and all dvd movies are 720p, as was this file under properties, or vlc: tools, codec, video resolution: 720p
the only guess i have is the original file copied from was dull. considering return: got youtube review to verify before hitting enter here, and checking other pitch example files, but see: (none are print screens, but snaps from files)
pic1 is youtube (very clear), pic2 is same pic in this dvd, pic3 easy shows bad view.

I'm not sure if I liked it or not
Movie concept is interesting, but something about it didn't resonate with me. I think it boils down to that I didn't connect with the storyline. I don't want to give anything away in this review so I can't expand too much on the backstory. I have relatives that love this movie and think it's profound and can watch it over and over again. The acting is strong and the movie is put together well as you would expect from a good Hollywood film. Unfortunately for me it didn't land as one of my most enjoyable films. I still recommend you see it and judge for yourself - i think it might be one of those "love it or hate it" type of films for a lot of people.

Outstanding performance by Amy Adams and skilful execution of a highly difficult story make this a must-see
Amy Adams give a truly stellar performance, as do supporting cast Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, in this thought-provoking and non-traditional story. Some who will give this film a bad review may be looking for a more formulaic sci-fi genre piece (if the absence of jumpscares will elicit a comment of "That sucked," for example), or a more complete resolution within the plot. But for those who enjoy pondering a nagging question or two after watching a movie, this will scratch that itch. The emotional pitch for one-world government is transparent but the story doesn't bend to make the point, but rather allows the unfolding of events to make a case. But the real delight for armchair producers is going to be watching how the concept of time is played with in a way that allows viewers to really step through into the mind of the main character and gain some better understanding of what's really going on on the story.

This is Amy Adams' film..and she is one of the best actresses working in the American film industry...Just check her body of work to date. Forrest Whitaker and Jeremy Renner complete the star power. But its the script that is the serious 'Star'...The premise is unique..the characters are extremely well developed..the cinematography and direction are first class all the way..Will make you think for days on end about its message..In light of the fine mess we've gotten ourselves into. Worth every penny of $3.99 for the Streamed SD version on Amazon.

A great movie. A great story line.
I have to say straight off that I was sold on this film before I ever saw it because it starred Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. You can't go wrong with a duo like that. Now about the film. It's one of those type that after you see it you immediately want to see it again to see if you hypothesis of the first viewing was correct. If your like me more than likely it wasn't. I finally came to the conclusion that trying to explain this movie to others is futile because most I talk to that have seen it have different opinion. If it sounds like I'm trying to confuse you, I'm really not. What I am saying is that different people will have different opinions on whats involved here. Putting it plain and simple: this is a thinking persons movie. A great movie with a great cast and, I might add, a great story line.

One of the best SciFi movies of All Time
Apparently this conclusion wasn't shared by others, so I felt the need to actually discuss these ideas rather than adding my voice to millions of others saying the same.
Arrival is not only the best SciFi movie of All Time, it may very well be one of the best Movies of All Time. This isn't hyperbole. The writing, acting, story, cinematography, and graphics are as good as it gets in movies these days. Yes, there is absolutely way too many opening logos. The "Newsposition" (exposition delivered by perfectly timed or layered news programs) was excessive. But this did not bring the plot to a halt or make it feel rushed. The pacing was flawless. The acting by all leads, primary supporting actors, and even the barely named background characters was extremely well done.
As for the story, I will do everything I can to avoid spoilers, because people deserve to experience this story themselves. What I loved: very natural and logical flow of events and reactions from the leads as they are introduced to the "Arrivals". Exceptional writing when it came to the military (both U.S. and most other countries). This wasn't a formulaic "Scientists GOOD, Military BAD" story. The military leaders were actually intelligent, spent time thinking thing through, and accepted logic! Name another SciFi movie where that happens. There are VERY few!
Most important of all - the Twist. It was jaw-dropping. It explained so much that was left uncertain, unclear, and downright mislead earlier in the film. The characters' reactions to it were completely rational. The portrayal of the Twist to the audience was flawless. It didn't drag. It didn't leave you wondering "Wait... What?!" It was dropped on us, explained, examples were given, and we were told flat-out what was going on. M. Night should watch this video to help him get back to his Sixth Sense chops.
Anyone who says this is bad SciFi isn't actually interested in SciFi. They're interested in Space Fantasy. Where everything is flashy, sexy, and nothing is explained because Look - A Distraction!! In the true sense of the intention behind Science Fiction, this movie stands orders of magnitude beyond so many others in recent years, or frankly across all movie history. If you like SciFi or love SciFi - Watch This Movie. I rented it when it first became available, because I was uncertain about it. Immediately after my first viewing, I bought it. That's how amazingly good this movie is.

original, ethereal sci-fi story
At first, I thought I was just watching a re-hashed combo of "Indepedence Day" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"...but this movie is different and stands on it's own.
I was completely entertained throughout the movie. I didn't understand every detail while was I was watching it...but, the more I thought about it afterward, all the pieces came together.
Most people that gave this a low rating, apparently didn't understand the story...and probably didn't get their fix of guns, explosions and action. This is a classic case of a movie not needing any of that to shine.
The story may not be perfect, but it's very good and the atmosphere is fantastic.

The Pace Is Amazed Wonder ... Intelligent & Beautiful Movie
There are so many reviews here, no one is ever going to read mine, yet I feel compelled to write it anyway. First off, I am NOT a sci-fi fan, but after talking to friends who are, I am inclined to think that is part of the reason I liked this movie. While they thought it was "slow" because they have encountered all kinds of aliens and time warps and weirdnesses in their past viewing and reading, I found the pace just right to process the astonishment of what was unfolding. The characters were me/us/now -- if this was happening in our world, this is how we would be feeling and reacting. We share Louise's (Amy Adams) wide-eyed wonder and appreciate Ian's (Jeremy Renner) amazed, sardonic "Yeah, that just happened." The viewer may feel a bit of uneasy confusion about the seemingly random switching of scenes -- flashbacks? visions? planted memories? -- but all is explained by the end, very simply and without rapid dialogs or long, involved explanations. You might just think, as I did, "Oh, of course. Brilliant."

This movie haunts me. Sometime you watch a movie that makes you feel strong emotions like happiness or anger but not this one. This movie is a drama with an interesting twist at the end. I'll admit it kept me confused, which is what it was meant to do, until towards the end. It moved slow and I kept feeling like I was missing something, just like the main character. Then, when it all came together, I just "got" it, the same way the character did. We think we regard the main character from the outside but in reality we are experiencing the movie through her perceptions. If we remain open, not seeking to interpret the movie, we begin to understand and feel what she feels. This isn't as much about the aliens arriving as it is about a choice. That choice is what haunts me. It makes me question what would I have done with this knowledge? How would I choose? I recommend this movie but when it comes to the message you need to be patient and wait for it.

A deeply moving, thought provoking film set to a science fiction premise--with no ray guns.
This is a divisive film. You will love it or hate it, but you will have an opinion. Why are there such strong feelings? I think it results from the way the film was marketed. Critics came out raving about a new Sci-Fi film and called it wildly unpredictable. The public's interest was piqued. After all, it stars Jeremy Renner so it must be a Sci-Fi action movie, right? Maybe it's like a good Independence Day. Wrong! There is only one explosion in this film and I don't think there was a single gun fired. Whoa! What a letdown, right? No.
This is not a Sci-Fi action film. This is Sci-Fi in the same vein as Contact, Solaris, and 2001. Actually, it is very similar to 2001 in many ways and themes. If you thought 2001 was boring, you will hate this film. This is not a film about aliens. This is a film about how we react to adversity and uncertainty. You may have heard that this is a film about time travel. It's not. No one "travels" through time. This film is about supposing that time is relative (which we know it is) and perhaps even malleable if you understand it well enough. The key to understanding time in this film is language. One aspect I think the film got wrong is contrasting science and language. Science is a language. Science is a way to explain the phenomena around you in formulas that can be shared and duplicated with others i.e., a language. They are not adversarial, but the same.
One thing that surprised me greatly was the portrayal of the military. I think this is probably the truest representation of how military personnel would react. These aren't mindless soldiers. They are thinking human beings with human emotions thrust into a situation of unbelievable significance. Some handle it with fear and trepidation while others approach it with care and concern. If we are ever visited by an alien race, the event will transcend the military. It will transcend the government and even nations. The government does not own or have a right to police our access to foreign visitors. This film portrays very well the moral dilemmas between duty and human emotion.
Are there some problems with the film? Undoubtedly it could have added more steps of suspense along the way--just a few morsels to keep the suspense building even more. I think that would have eliminated some of the "boring" complaints. I also think Jeremy Renner did not belong in the film. He is an excellent actor and it's not like he doesn't act his role well, it's just that he brings too much "Jeremy Renner" baggage to the role for me to accept him completely. Amy Adams was perfect for this role, however.
You absolutely should watch this film if you like thinking about it afterwards. Nothing is spoon-fed to you in this film and you will NOT receive all the answers. Much is left open to your interpretation. It will leave you guessing to the very end. What would you do in the same situation?
If you thought 2001 was a masterpiece (it was) then you will love this film in much the same way. If you thought Independence Day was a masterpiece, don't waste your time watching this.
**Blu-ray note** Having purchase the Blu-ray, I can now speak to it separately from the film. The picture is stunning and one of the best films I have seen. The colors are slightly muted, but I'm sure it's intentional. I just don't remember it being overly dark in the theater.
There are over 80 minutes of extras, although I am slightly apprehensive about watching them. They basically explain the whole point of the film which I feel is better left to your own interpretation. Those who don't like the film won't ever get a chance to see what it was about since they surely won't buy this, but the answers are there if you want them.

If you want to die of boredom, watch this movie. 😒
This movie was SOOOO bad! If good means making your eyes dry out for what seems like infinity years, then it’s good. So first, this big pebble shaped like a beauty blender appears out of nowhere and for some reason, they decide to GO TO IT. And then,these big fat angry squids that looked like blobs of black Jell-O with legs and feet popped out of it and decided to terrorize the Earth for NO APPARENT REASON AT ALL. And it turns out, they were actually giving someone a present which makes absolutely no sense at all. And then there was a really lazy physicist that would absolutely REFUSE to do any ACTUAL physics. And then this lady randomly saw and to the future and decided to call her boss and tell him something in Mandarin for some reason so she was about to get shot for having a cell phone, which makes NO SENSE. And then, it turned out that the mutant squids with giant chicken feet talked in a circle language,which is completely and utterly WEIRD. And then, this lady saw into the future and saw that she had a baby with a rare disease, and her husband randomly said:”Let’s make a baby.” Which is probably the weirdest and most random sentence I’ve heard in my entire lifetime, and then the started kissing, right then, right there. SPOILER ALERT: You would probably rather watch paint dry than watch this movie. Also, don’t blame me because you can never get the two hours of your life back that you wasted watching this movie.
CONCLUSION: So, when you watch a movie like this, you probabably expect you to be scared and for your adrenaline to get pumping and for it to be actually WORTH YOUR TIME to watch, and for there to be a really boring part at the end. But no, this movie was ALL boring. The only reason I didn’t fall asleep watching this movie is because I wasn’t really paying attention. Don’t be fooled by the awesome cover and awesome title, this movie is NOT exiting at any degree. If you don’t believe me, watch the movie. THEN you will. (P.S. The only reason that I gave this movie a star is because the cover and the title. The music is SUPER boring.)

One word to sum it up, stupid.
This was a stupid movie from start to finish. Enlightened reviewers may say "you just don't get it"... To that I say that I "got it" perfectly, it's just that "it" is a rediculous, stupid, boring waste of time. It is a movie that tries to twist your mind- reminds me of interstellar, which I actually didn't "get" at all, but at least stuff happened in that one. To make it worse the video was horrible... We exited the movie and tried other streams just to make sure there was nothing wrong with our tv/streaming. There was not. The video was fuzzy throughout, apparently intentionally, and only made worse by the entire thing being gloomy and dark. I am angry that I gave part of my life to this- stay away.
