Experiences with Audioengine HD6 (6 Months)
When researching speakers I could not find much information about the HD6 from websites other than professional reviewers or from the manufacturer so I suppose I'll write a review after having owned these speakers for over 6 months.
I am not an audiophile, but I do research audio equipment and make purchasing decisions as though I were one. Basically I am saying I don't have trained ears.Because of that I can't really make any definitive statements about the audio quality of these speakers. I can say that as a discerning layman I absolutely love the sound of these speakers. I am a proponent of getting your information from those qualified to dispense it so please take my comments as to the audio quality worth a grain of salt. In this review I mean to elaborate upon the hardware/setup and capabilities as I have experienced them.
I bought these to reduce clutter in my room. I had a receiver and it required remotes, shutting on an off every time I wanted to use it (They used too much power to leave on), extra space, a separate bluetooth receiver, and wires. It was basically a headache to use so I didn't use it much. These speakers eliminate the need for a receiver and thinking back to what I had before, I am very glad I made this purchase.
I have these speakers connected to my television via the Optical input for viewing television/movies. Please note that if you plan to do the same, these speakers only interpret a PCM signal. Dolby digital signals will not play through these speakers. With regular cable on a panasonic Viera television from 2012, most channels use a Dolby signal. Most modern televisions allow you to alter the audio output settings and will convert to one format or the other, but some older ones like mine did not. I've since bought a newer samsung television and it alowed me to change the signal to PCM so now all channels play through these speakers.
Even on the older television which did not convert to PCM, without altering any settings it played the audio of my playstation 4 just fine. The PS4 was connected via HDMI to the television, the television directed the audio to the Optical out. My newer television does the same. If after connecting the audio isn't playing, check your television's audio settings to be sure it is playing through the optical out and in PCM format. With automatic settings it will output the format it is given which may or may not be PCM.
I use the speakers in equal measure to listen to music. Audiophile communities typically dissuade people from transmitting audio via bluetooth so I was a little hesitant to use bluetooth to play my music on these speakers. I have found that I can't tell the difference and for the sheer convenience I listen to far more music than I used to. There is also an aux input which is the gold standard really, sometimes I use it when I don't want to use bluetooth.
The speakers must be on to establish a bluetooth connection (of course) and the speakers have their own remote which can put it into/out of sleep mode. I used a Kill-a-Watt meter to check the power consumption when in sleep and when on. I don't have my readings in front of me but the power usage difference amounted to only a few dollars every year, like 4 or 5 (cost was 7-11$ per year I think). So I choose to leave them on. This means I don't need to fish out a remote when I want to play music, I only need to select it from my list of bluetooth devices and can play music within seconds (without getting out of bed!). Volume is controlled via a knob on the speaker or by the remote. Your audio input device can control the volume up to the max output of what the speaker's volume is set at.
These speakers seem to have a priority list when receiving multiple audio signals. I have not tested every situation but I can say with certainty that Bluetooth signals are prioritized over optical. This means I can be watching television and when audio plays through my phone (or whatever is connected via bluetooth) it will mute the television audio and play the phone's audio. There is a very minimal delay when switching sources, probably a second before the phone's audio comes on. What I love is that I can have the phone connected by bluetooth and as long as the phone is not producing audio it will continue playing the other source (television), when I start a song on my phone it switches over. When I pause the song or turn the music off it will switch back to the optical (television's audio output) after a second or two. The transitions are virtually seamless.
For movies the speakers have a great low end, but nothing that will shake the house unless at very high volumes. Unless playing in a very large or crowded room I would not worry about these speakers not having adequate volume. If you plan to use them for parties I would do further research. I would venture to guess that they are loud enough for house parties.
For playing video games the high and mid ends are excellent. The low end is significantly better than anything that is not a subwoofer. I've no experience with computer subwoofers so whether these are better than small subs I cannot say. I did pair these with an SVS SB2000 subwoofer which is 12" and noted a significant improvement in wow-factor. I used the speakers for a month or two without the sub. When a grenade goes off in a videogame you feel a thud in your chest and sense of terror that was not present without the added subwoofer. Unless at higher volumes without a subwoofer you don't feel the music (as in literally being vibrated by the low end) and you won't really feel explosions in games/movies. I elaborate on this because it was a concern of mine before buying these. I can't say these fail by not having unrealistic, distortedly loud bass though, as speakers I don't believe they could be improved upon significantly. A subwoofer really can't be substituted for as it is simply something that requires a certain size. (More powerful smaller ones though can to some degree imitate a larger sub).
TLDR:
To replace a full sound system with a receiver, these are amazing. I can hardly imagine going back to my old clunky setup. The high, mid, and low ends were impressive to me but because I like feeling explosions I added a subwoofer to my setup. For music I really don't think I could ask for more. Playing music by bluetooth on these if very simple, as the power draw is low enough that you don't need to turn them on/off so you can connect at any moment.
If anybody who has read this has any questions or comments let me know! Thanks for reading.

Solid sound and build quality
Sleek design and solid sound. Picks up a significant amount of low end, but it's not a subwoofer by any means. Great for listening around the house. It's also nice to have the variety of adapters in the back to integrate with whatever system you are using.
Excellent system
Originally bought the HD6 and the sub-woofer for my computer setup with the thought of having a system that could keep up with some fairly high volume guitar playing. But due to circumstances, it instead got deployed to the family room to drive the television, iPod, and other computers. While it isn't a 5.1 or 7.1 sound system, it is far better than simple TV speakers. I like how all the inputs are active at the same time (nothing to switch). I do wish there was a way to adjust the sub-woofer remotely. I often find myself tweaking it up or down between music and movies. Someday I'll get a new system for the family room, but until then the HD6 is great!
Outstanding!
If you are looking for premium sound. This is it. And no need for subwoofer. This thing is monsterous. It plays music with crisp detail and plays movies with the punch that feels similar to IMAX.
HD6
After an absence of 25 years, I felt technology had caught up to the point that I could afford, (both in money and space) to wade back into the Hi-Fi Stereo world again.
I researched from soup-to-nuts, decided to focus on powered speakers, then decided and purchased a pair of KEF X300A, they sounded great, but did not work properly, (hardware/software something) I returned them not wanting to try another pair. I was told to wait for the LS50 wireless, they were 3 times the cost and not due to release for months.
Longer story than this short, I decided to purchase the HD6s and I've been very pleased. They're mounted on 30 inch stands, I listen to a wide variety of music primarily in my living room but they're so easy to move I listen to them them outside as well. These little speakers just sound great, I want to say for what they are, but they really sound great regardless their size. They sound fantastic in near field listening and are still quite good in a in a more standard set-up - they do however have a small "sweet spot" both left/right and up/down. Don't get me wrong, they are not LS50s but they are still impressive.
Base is good - for what they are but I did just order an SVS SB-2000.

Wrong electrical cord and the remote was DOA
The speakers are Audioengine's top-of-the-line HD6 model sold through Amazon. The sound quality is slightly muddy compared with my older KEF 300A speakers, which failed after several years of service. Both are billed as being neutral, but the KEFs were cleaner sounding. The HD6's were connected to my PC using optical cable, the 300A's were connected using USB -- both using digital out to internal DACs in the speakers. Both were used at lower volume for PC listening.
I've decided to hang on the HD6s to give them time for break-in. I do like having the volume control on the front of the speakers, even when used with a PC. There is no USB input, so you have to buy the optical cable if you want digital to the internal DAC.
The HD6 speakers arrived on time but with a power cord that doesn't work in the USA. Also, the remote battery was DOA, even after replacing the battery at my expense. I had to buy an IEC-320 C7 power cord for U.S. power. Frustrating given Audioengine's chest-thumping about their plug and play speakers.

Great sound for the price!
I am a bit of an audiophile and have a $10000 tower speakers (MA 5g 300) for my home theater. But I am very impressed with these little speakers for my computer. They are extremely crisp, high and mids are very good for the price point, but the bass is a bit weak so a sub may be needed.
I would highly encourage you to buy the better cable for the RCA wires, and the blue jeans cables for the speaker cables. I tested stock vs these cables and the sound coming out of the speakers became another level.
Overal highly recommend and you will not regret getting these speakers.

Not so great Great PC speakers 🔈 👎 **READ EDIT**
I upgraded from those $100 Bose pc speakers. The sound really is great. I tried the Bluetooth and had no issue connecting to my pc. It sounds great too! I decided to try connecting to my JDS DAC and surprisingly I liked the Bluetooth DAC more. I then did a comparison between my Energy 5.1 home theater setup and it held up considerably well. My next purchase will be the S3 because I need more bass b/c I listen to EDM. Overall I’m much happier with my purchase.
*UPDATE* 7/9/20 I’ve only used Bluetooth but I get loud pop noises(usually 10-15 a day), audio will cut in and out, weird static sounds, and the volume knob will increase the volume when trying to decrease the volume. Same thing happens in reverse too. I contacted audio engine and they said to try RCA or optical to narrow down the problem. Next week I get my new dac/amp and I’ll pick up an optical cable from Best Buy. I’ll update once I troubleshoot the devices.

Best speakers but pricey
These are hands down the best speakers in the market. I have two computers a laptop for work and a desktop for gaming.
I needed speakers that would work with Bluetooth and wired. This one definitely fits the bill.
One suggestion is I would recommend the bass speaker as well I purchased the as8 bass. If you are listening to music while you are working you will need the bass.
Very easy to set up mostly plug and play. All the boxes took forever to break down but over all I would recommend these speakers.
Make sure to break in the speakers for 40 hours for best sound.

Incredible sound
I bought these to go with my tv. I have audio engine a5+ on my other tv but the HD6 are absolutely a step up in quality with noticeable improvement in bass and imaging. The sound is crisp and powerful. I also have them connected with an Apple TV 4 and the HD6 sound great on movie night. My wife loves them since the voices and dialogue are clear. I bought the S8 subwoofer but honestly I’m not sure the setup needs it. The speakers alone have a lot of base and music is amazing. These are so good I’m thinking about grabbing a set of HD3’s for my desktop computer setup.
They sounded great right out of the box
I bought these speakers about a month and a half ago. They sounded great right out of the box, but as they broke in, i could actually hear a difference as time went on. I use them for my tv and with my turntable (pro-ject debut carbon dc) and occasionally via bluetooth and they work perfectly with any input. I plan on upgrading my turntable in the future and i have no doubt these speakers will sound even better with higher end equipment. Sound reproduction is excellent, the highs are crisp and any volume. If there are any shortcomings, it would be that very low frequency sounds are a bit weak, so those who listen to hip hop or rap, etc would likely want a subwoofer. the speakers themselves are constructed very nicely. The housings are very sturdy and seem to be made of high quality material. Definately would buy another audioengine product in the future!
Non audiophile review
These speakers are fine for me. They sound great to my untrained ear, look good, and I had no problems with getting them up and running. Easier to pair than I thought with stands. Was looking at a KEF that was almost double the cost, but these are fine for me.
amazing, the least i can say. absolutely. i
amazing, the least i can say. absolutely. such a great quality, that is i who why never write a review had too. Audioengine is so good with the packaging, only missing a battery, because i was so thrilled to hear it and then i had to go buy a battery. all the rest is just amazing
Eargasms
so these sound....uhhhhh..... amazing? yeah, lets go with that. They sound incredible and put out more bass than I typically expect from bookshelf speakers. I did still pair it with the S8 Sub because I like to feel the music or movie. Remote is made from solid aluminum so it's got some heft which is just lovely. face plates are magnetically mounted to the speakers and seem to automatically center themselves, so that's pretty sweet too. 100% worth the investment so far!
You have to break them in. Don't judge sound right out of the box
I'll be honest I was a little unimpressed with these at first. The bass seemed to overpower the other frequencies and it seemed a bit muddy. I looked in the manual to see if there was an eq setting that may have been causing this and what I discovered (as with all speakers) is that these have a recommended break in period of 40-50 hours of casual listening so I gave them some time. All I have to say is wow!!! I gave them about 6 hours and they sound phenomenal. They are pricey but worth every penny!
Speakers go Boom
I have the A5+ and upgraded to the HD6. Optical from my Mac Pro and no complaints while I do work. Highly recommended for those who need to work and listen to music at the same time.
Get the subwoofer. Not complete without it.

Initial reaction is that they are good for movies
Initial reaction is that they are good for movies, but not so great for music.
I streamed several high quality vinyl rips through VLC on my macbook. To get the sound right, I had to take off 3db 170hz-310hz, and add 3db at the top end 14khz-20khz. Do this and you get a great sound, but otherwise there's too much midbass, causing the muddy sound that others have commented on. I'm curious to see if anything changes after a break-in period.
For movies I would have liked some sort of dynamic range compression option for late-night viewing.

Poorly Supported Speakers
I bought these speakers thinking they were a quality product. The jacks did not seem to fit in the horizontal, and most obvious, holes on the bolt connectors, for when I presented them, they seemed too large for the holes and I didn't want to damage the jacks. I then presumed the logical method was to use the vertical holes in the bolt connectors (otherwise why have holes in the first place?). One jack fitted the other didn't! I learnt later that the jacks have to be pushed into the horizontal holes. The lack of customer support from the manufacturer in not giving clear instructions (a simple diagram would have made it so much easier) is not good. Also, the bolt holes being so illogically (to my mind) different in size suggests there could be other build problems. Also the manufacturer's product guarantee is USA only.
You receive what you're paying for
I'm going to get straight to the point. Aesthetic look and great sound quality.
Happy Customer
Easy set-up with my Samsung TV and painless BT connection to multiple devices. Paired with the S8 subwoofer these speakers are loud, clear, and substantial and get the job done when it's time to crank up some Slayer, Kendrick, or Star Wars . If you like to play your music/movies loud now and then and don't want the hassle of putting together an AV system, browse no further.
They are amazing!!!
Quality and ease of setup
Bass Muddy, Treble Over Emphasized.
Bluetooth worked great, but the base a bit distorted and treble over emphasized, drowning out mid-range. They do have more bass than the HD5, but physics limits what you can do with a speaker this size, and over driving it is not very clean. Actually gave me a headache and had to return. The HD5 would be better, as they stay within the limits of what can realistically be accomplished.
as much as i love them these are simply on another level entirely
I have the A2+ speakers, as much as i love them these are simply on another level entirely. Truely. The most important thing is to run them in for a couple of days as this really seems to improve the sound.
I like the quality of the sound
I like the quality of the sound. It is clean, tight, powerfull enough for my office. I would recommand it easily.
