The Arctic Cooling Freezer i30 is an Intel-only CPU cooling system that has a massive profile, and promises enthusiast-level cooling at an affordable price. Arctic Cooling sent me a copy of this cooler in return for an honest review.CONTENTSIn the box is the cooler, motherboard plate and mounting brackets for the 1155, 1166 and 2011 architectures. Also included is a tube of their popular MX-4 thermal paste, and I was glad to see that this wasn't pre-applied. Also in the box are all the screws/fittings you will need, as well as an instruction manual.INSTALLATIONUnlike many coolers that I have tried, Arctic has included an adhesive-backed plate, that greatly reduces the strain and annoyance of installing the cooler. That said, this isn't the easiest install. There are tiny adhesive circles for the front spacers which easily get messed up during install. Overall, it's not the easiest cooler I have installed, but not the worst. You will need to remove your motherboard unless your case has an opening behind the CPU area.DESIGNWell, this is what I really want to spend some time on. The heatsink itself is massive, measuring in at 5.75"H x 5.25"W x 3.75"D (with the fan installed). It comes with AC's 120mm fan, white in color, mounted via an easily-removed plastic bracket. Overall, the CPU cooler has an impressive look to it without being too flashy. It uses an eight direct-contact copper heatpipe design, and the bottom is relatively well finished, although I suspect that some people will still want to lap. Of course, the fan is connected by a 4-pin PWM header, allowing for full control via BIOS/OS.Now, on to some cons of this monstrous design. Due to the sheer size of the heatsink and fan, this cooler will block the first RAM slot on MANY boards, both mATX and ATX. On both of my MSI boards, the first RAM slot was blocked and could only fit RAM with no heatsink. Even then, it was close. This is the sole reason for my four-star review. Marketed as an enthusiast-grade CPU cooler, Arctic should know that we like to max out our boards with sticks in all four RAM slots. With this cooler, you can still use two sticks in slots 2 and 4 for dual channel memory operation, but if you only have 4GB sticks of RAM, this really isn't going to cut it. Luckily I have 2x8GB sticks for my set up, but for many this will be a deal breaker. It's really a shame that this is the case, because other than that I find the overall look and design to be top-notch.NOISEMoving past the downside mentioned above, it's all good news from here. I am very pleased with the noise-level of this CPU cooler for the performance. Now many computer experts agree that getting a definitive noise level for CPU coolers is an approximate science at best - room shape, floor materials and of course what case you are using all come into play, so I didn't take any "measurements". That said, the CPU cooler is noticeably quieter than the stock Intel cooler, and despite having a "fan noise", it lacks any of the pitchy whines that many coolers have. Speaking of the fan, I just wanted to echo another reviewer's praise for the fan's ability to run even at very low RPMs. With such an efficient heatsink you don't need the fan to be running very fast to get acceptable cooling levels, so having a fan that is capable of running at low speeds is very important.PERFORMANCEI will be adding benchmarks in a day or two, but overall the cooler does its job rather well. At 100% stress, it FAR outperforms the stock cooler, and at this price point will beat many other aftermarket air coolers - and does so at near-silent noise levels, which for me honestly is more important than getting rock-bottom temps!OVERALLIf designed a little better to allow for all four RAM slots to be used with any memory, this would be a five-star product no questions asked. As it is, it combines excellent cooling and noise levels, with a design that is good, but will exclude some people depending on their motherboards. For forty dollars (at the time of this writing), you definitely won't regret your purchase - just look at the other reviews! Still, I can't recommend this without having some reservations, so I will say this; if you have no need for all four RAM slots, and want a quiet and efficient cooler, this is the one for you! If, however, you have taller RAM that you are invested in and you need all four slots, I recommend not stopping here as it will aggravate you.Overall, highly recommended for some, others may need to look elsewhere!

If you have the room for it, which excludes a whole lot of cases, this will take you about as far as you can go on air cooling. It's nicely designed. It's massive. Massive heat spreader. Massive heat pipes: 4 U tubes approximately 5/16" diameter which are flattened to make contact with the heat spreader directly. AC has finally got the massive aluminum fins right too, finally. They're spaced widely enough to decrease the pointless static backpressure that arises with their AC's customary too-tight spacing. They're also neatly folded over at the sides so that the assembly is much easier to handle (they're stiff as a result of the folding) and you're far less likely to shed any blood during the installation process.Installation is more work than most of their other 1155-1156-2011 products which attach with cleverly designed pushpins from the top of the board. Due to the higher pressure on the processor case that occurs with this design, you have to mount a stiff plastic reinforcing bracket on the back of the motherboard. This has its positives though - the bracket has four threaded posts that stick through the four board mounting holes so the assembly mounts with screws, not pins. Once that's on, you mount two nickel plated steel brackets on spacers to the top side, attaching them loosely. Then, after applying thermal joint compound, you attach the HSF to the two brackets. Tighten the six screws down gradually so that everything can self-center, and that's it. Reattach the fan to the fin assembly and you're done.As air coolers go, this is about as good as it's going to get. Unfortunately, even THIS isn't enough to make up for the miserable internal heat sinking inside the current Ivy Bridge processors, but that's another story.I was pleasantly surprised to find that the fan tach remained operational to as low as 50 RPM. That's always been one of AC's weak spots -- lousy tach circuitry. But it looks like they've improved lately, or I just got lucky. I've seen AC fans where the tach dropped out at speeds as high as 800 RPM, which makes closed-loop fan control really difficult. Good thing that this works as low as it does, too, because you don't need much fan speed to get effective cooling from this. Naturally, this means that it's essentially silent during most normal usage. Fortunately, the fan remains silent (no groaning, whining, cogging, rattling) at all PWM-set speeds down to 150RPM.FWIW, the case I used this in measures 8" deep. The mobo mounting tray plus spacers puts the bottom of the motherboard roughly 3/4" from the side panel. With the thickness of the board plus the socket assembly, this means that the top of the HSF clears the top side panel by about a half-inch. You have been warned.Would I buy this again? Absolutely. Would I try to avoid needing this kind of cooling capacity in the future? Absolutely! Hopefully Intel will come to their senses and correct the Ivy Bridge TIM misadventure in future products, which ought to mitigate the need for anything this large, except in unusual situations like aggressive overclocking.Overall: RECOMMENDED, with caveats.

I bought this for an AMD PII x4 965 BE (3.4ghz) but the pins on it were bent, and am waiting for a replacement. However, the PII X3 720 BE (2.8ghz) it is replacing dropped an entire 17c using this cooler with basic "ceramique" thermal paste (which should be called thermal GLUE, and I do NOT recommend, but that's another review).I might be wrong, but I think this cooler might having a bigger temp diff with a more aggressive fan profile. The stock cooler ran about 57c under load, and I'm pretty sure the fan for this cooler only spins up if it goes over 40c.Mounting it isn't too bad, really. Some cons: as others may have pointed out, this cooler pretty massive, and on certain motherboards and in certain cases, you are going to have clearance issues! (it JUST BARELY clears my ram, and only because the ram heatsinks have "teeth" instead of flat raised tops) it also comes really close to the door of my case. Also beware chipset clearance. The instructions I got listed the airflow incorrectly, turning the fan the other way puts the label facing in, so I'm relatively certain this is an error. The heatpipes have large grooves in between, I knew this going in, but it still seems like the surface could be smoother, maybe I'm imagining it..For what it's worth, I got this used from amazon warehouse, in "like new" condition. it was really nice, and even had the tiny double sided adhesive sticker/washers for the stand-offs.I may update this review if and when I get the x4 965 working, maybe I'll even overclock it...

Recently installed the A30 on an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 mobo -w- an AMD FX 6200 processor. Very pleased with the performance over the stock heat-sink / fan that came with the AMD chip. Stock heat-sink was idling around 32c with the CPU over-clocked to 4.1 GHZ. The A30 now idles around 27c and whisper quiet. Running Prime 95 on the OC'd system my cpu temps never go above 55c and still very quiet with the fan running at around 1800 r.p.m.!!!Impressed that you can mount the heatsink in 4 different configurations. I had to mount mine in a pull config as opposed to the preferred push config. The push configuration would render at least 1 DIMM slot unusable.I'm sure that there are better air coolers out there but for the cost of the A30 it's very hard to beat.

This thing is huge, but it does the job. Assembly is straight forward but you will need access to the back side of the motherboard. The cooler can be positioned to face in any of 4 directions which worked for me because only one worked for me without hitting something. I'm using a mid-tower case. My i7-2600K reached 82C during benchmark testing on 3DMark-Vantage with the stock Intel cpu cooler but with the Arctic i30 the max temp was 53C. That's a huge difference, and it's also makes less noise! Highly recommend this cooler.

Here are some points i want to shareInstallation was relatively fast and simple for me. I am comfortable installing computer hardware.2. Very quiet cooler in my opinion. 3. After installing this cooler, normal temperatures went down from 55? C. to an average of 43? C. This is a huge difference!! 4. Here comes the impressive part. Under processor stress, this cooler won't let the temperatures rise above 69? C. No matter what programs I run and how long I run them for. I have been monitoring processor temperatures for the past month with this cooler. I have run several HD video processing jobs. All of them took over 5 hours to complete with processor load at 100%. CPU temperatures have remained steady below 70? C. Very impressive.

Cool quite operation. Bring the temperature down to 30 deg centigrade. But be ready to sacrifice the memory slots. Two if you are using duel in line memoryIt needs to be trimmed by about 5 mm so as to save the memory slot

Besides the wiggle if you try to move it...This thing keeps my I7 3930k MONSTER cool as heck running at 4.5 GHZ in its sleep. RAM is overclocked at 2133 and 12 cores running at 4.5GHZ and everything stays perfectly cool even under stress testing. SUPER SUPER GOOD PRODUCT!!!

Provides much better than stock cooling and at a afforable price. You do have to remove the motherboard to install the back plate but with a new build or upgrade you're going to anyway. The instructions are a straightfoward you can easily figure out how to install it. The retention bracket does allow for some movement even when tightened down all the way but after installation it still dropped my idle temps from 39c to 28c and 100% load temps from 56c to 48c. However, it is not allowed to attach another fan to it.Overall pretty nice piece but it is also VERY LARGE. Get exact measurements before purchase or you will be sorry.

I have a BIOSTAR x79 TPOWER mobo. And this device worked great with it. It also worked good with the ASROCK mobos I tried it on. I'm using my Intel i7 3820It's pretty big, but it looks pretty cool. It's completely silent, and works well to keep things cool. I wouldn't overclock ever with a fan based cooler, but that's my opinion. I mostly wanted this to keep my regular clocked system to stay really cool.I like the layout, it's A LOT easier to install than other ones, doesn't have stupid snap in screws etc. Everything is of high quality.Overall I would highly recommend this device to gamers that want to spice up their computer. Looks awesome with my Antec 600T White Graphite version.

Phenom II 6 core CPU. The AMD was loud and did not cool nearly as good. It is large, though this adds to its cooling capability. Very easy install, however, make the silver thermal paste line thinner than shown in directions.

Fits in my computer case just fine and the multiple ways to install it make it work for pretty much any setup. My computer was hitting 72C with the stock fan. Now it doesn't go higher than 48C no matter what I am doing.

This cooler is part of a complete system I put together for a home music studio. Unfortunately, though quiet, it turns out to be the loudest component of my otherwise virtually silent system. FYI, I selected a Seasonic power supply with a fan that only comes on under heavy load, and an Antec P280 acoustically padded case, both of which are pleasantly hushed. Fortunately, the Arctic Cooling Freezer appears to allow for the fan to be exchanged, so I plan to find a quieter 120mm fan and do so.As I was mounting the cooler I was impressed by the quality of materials, and for most purposes I would recommend this cooler. If you want to go silent, however, you might try a different cooler, or plan to replace the fan.
