I have raised my rating from 1 star to 2 stars because I can actually fly the thing for minutes at a time. It is still almost worthless inside, which is what it is sold for.
After a few days of using it outside, it is easier to fly now, but there are still major issues.
1. The photos are blurry - even with taking 60 photos, you will be lucky to find a single one that is not blurry.
2. The video rarely work the way you want them to. If you go too long, you end up with a large file that Windows doesn't recognize. I assume the video was not encoded correctly before it was finished.
3. If it gets more than about 15 feet away from you, it loses signal and dies...you may or may not be able to increase the throttle and save it from crashing.
On a positive note: I have crashed it countless times and it has not broken yet.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I try to be fair in my reviews, but this Air Hogs Video Drone is just a complete waste of money. The description says you need 6 AA batteries, but actually you need 3 AAA batteries. Once you charge the helicopter up using the USB cable (it uses the same microusb as most phones, so you may be able to use your phone charger if it's not apple), it is ready to go. This thing is supposed to be indoor only, but unless you have a mansion, you will have one heck of a time getting it flying properly within your confined space. I had it hovering for about 30 seconds at the most inside, and took some photos and video. The photos are either dark or blurry and the videos didn't even finish recording enough to be able to play on my laptop. I did take it outside and it was a little easier to fly (there was no wind) but I was constantly having to let it down due to trees, my roof, etc... If you have a massive yard with no trees you may have better luck. I tried the pictures and video again, with the same issues.
Basically this is advertised as a video drone, but you will be lucky to have it flying period and super lucky if you can control it longer than a minute (even outside), and whatever video or photos you do take will either be completely unreadable or blurry or dark. I seriously doubt the photos on the box were taken with this unit.
The product does nothing it advertises even remotely close to decent, and I am sure after a frustrating 30 minutes having to fool with it, your kids will be disappointed and so will you.
I suggest spending more money on a different type of "video drone" and maybe you will have better luck.

Given the fact that the price has gone down, but no complaints about the toy in flight have been given, this aerial toy may do more than it is truly capable of doing, but the durability is still in question--even though my great-nephew is careful with his toys. Now that the price has been slashed, there is room for more experimentation.

The video isn't great. Maybe if we were better at hovering very still, we may get a better picture, but ours were blurry or dark. All of them. We are still learning though and maybe with practice and learning which lighting works best we can improve. I do like that it came with extra propellers since we do crash a lot. We haven't needed them yet, though...this thing has taken a beating. I took two stars for the camera not working as well as I hoped, but left 3 because the helicopter does work.

That said, it is fun to fly the helicopter around a room and get videos of surprised/scared family members, friends, and pets. But the videos are really not that good. But you aren't exactly going to use this thing for aerial reconnaissance missions. The camera is more a fun novelty rather than something you will actually get a lot of use out of. I can't imagine anyone spending much time with these videos
There are some reviews saying that it is impossible to fly. This is not true. It flies just as well as any comparable RC helicopter that I have bought. It does take some practice and is an art based on fine movements. If the helicopter gets out of control it will crash. That's how these work. That brings us to the final point, they say that this is a helicopter that you can crash. And so far, we have not been able to break it.

'drone'. I found it really hard to get the hang of but my
brother was able to fly it without plummeting or crashing
with ease. It's pretty tough and survives indoor
crashes with aplomb. My only complaint is that
I haven't been very successful flying it personally. I
suppose it's a matter of where one's interests and
aptitudes are.

After dozens of crashes the copter is a bit fitful in
responding to the remote signal. It sometimes goes
and sometimes it hesitates. Once the rotor starts it
usually keeps going, but I still haven't come close to
learning how to make it hover at a generally fixed
altitude. It shoots straight skyward and when I try to
back it off a bit it usually falls out of the air. I'm concerned
that by the time I figure out how to fly it without crashing
all the time it won't work anymore. Time and practice
will tell I suppose.
Considering the price it's pretty fun to hand it around
in the family. It's very light and this factor doubtless
prevents damage in the frequent wipeouts one can
expect.

However, it was a disappointment on the design of this copter. It is very difficult to control and cannot maintain stable hovering in flights. It can also only operates indoor. For some reason, as soon as I take it outdoor just a few feet away from the entrance, the copter would not respond to the controls. The internal memory is about 118 Mbytes which could hardly store any meaningful video clips.
As much as I like its appearance, I could not recommend this copter.

First off, the instructions are horrible. But, it's easy enough to figure out by looking at the pictures.
Charged the helicopter up and installed fresh new AAA batteries in the remote. Instructions say that the light will be a solid red when charging. This one is a blinking red light when charging, light is off when charged. It does come with a charging cable that you connect to the computer.
Worked on and off in the house. Sometimes it would fly and sometimes it would just sit there like it's not getting the signal.
Went outside and would do the same. Sometimes it would fly and sometimes just sit there. Then, when we did get it up and flying outside, could only go up a short distance and lose the signal and fall down. Tried to just hover it and fly it around but just keeps losing the signal and dropping.
We were able to hurry and try the video and camera while inside the house. Just bad resolution and dark.
The helicopter itself seems durable. Crashed it a lot and it held up well.
Maybe we got a faulty one? If this worked well and we were able to fly it outside in the yard more than 2 feet, the price would be about right. But, as it is, I wouldn't waste my money on it.

Put your 45 bucks (or more) towards a Soma or other unit with better camera and longer lasting batteries and larger memory card.

what does work? the form factor is nice. the controller is solid. The recharging cable is easy to connect and there are lights that show it's charging and when it finally does charge. It seems pretty durable, kids crashed it into the walls and ceiling several times. Kids friends at a sleepover added it to their santa list.
what doesn't work?
air hogs is notorious to providing a few spare parts, but then you can't easily order more. So this, as many other of their products, is somewhat disposable. The power switch has 3 positions. Off, on, charge. At least 2 of those could be consolidated. My kids had it on the charger all night and it was not charging.

It seems to be overpriced. I wouldn't expect it to be priced over $25. All in all, seems to be okay, but if I had paid for it rather than receiving it for review purposes, I wouldn't be too happy with it. It is rather amusing to use, but I don't think it would last very long in the hands of an 8-12 year old. Shop around to see if you can't find something a bit sturdier and less expensive.

Also, note that this will probably have to be licensee under new laws

I have to say I haven't tested the actual video feature yet, so as I get used to it and get more involved with the product I will update my review if needed. Mine was provided courtesy of the Amazon Vine Program, as of right now I have no complaints with it.
