Would have preferred it to take larger AA batteries, because they provide power for a longer period than AAA batteries, but the two AAA batteries last a for a reasonable amount of shooting time.
Works effectively as a wireless trigger for other off-camera flashes.
The build quality seems a little flimsy, the diffuser direct/bounce slider switch especially so. The flash is turned on/off by rotating the unit upwards. This means that there is no flexibilty in turning the flash sideways or varying the angle of pitch, hence the 3 star rating.
After a few weeks with the flash have decided to upgrade to 4 stars. The flash works well with my Sony A7 and the bounce flash images are very pleasing.
I bought it to correct the shadow which the Sony Alpha SEL18200 E-mount 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens created when attached to my NEX-6 camera.
Previously ordered small flashes and tried with the Sony A7R:
Bower SFD450C Digital e-TTL II Dedicated Autofocus Illuminator for Canon XT/XS/30D/60D/T2i/T3/T5i/1D/5D Mark III/6D/7D/SL1 and Similar DSLRs (Black)
Sunpak RD2000C Camera Flash
I was looking for just a simple small flash to fit on the tiny A7R body and both the Bower and Sunpak delivered on the size but not the functionality. The Sony HVLF 20M lacks any sort of manual controls on the flash (what I really wanted) but is compatible with the new A7R's MI shoe and isn't overly bulky. I've used a Yongnuo 560 II flash and a true Canon 600 EX-RT and both work fine in the hot shoe - they're just as big as the Sony A7R camera is itself.
The HVLF 20M with the MI designation works in Sony's new Multi-Interface shoe which is on the A7R, and while limited in functions it at least provides a good compact flash solution. You can only use the flash in Direct or Bounce mode, which just tilts the flash head slightly upwards to not be quite as harsh. If the head swiveled this would be a perfect flash but alas you just have a slightly better than pop-up flash solution for over a hundred dollars... thanks Sony. The flash is not really that powerful at all, it only runs on 2x AAA batteries which saves the weight and size but sacrifices the power output to GN 20 (about half power of a full power flash like the Canon 600 EX-RT which most websites cite as GN 60 though this is a moving value based on flash zoom and bounce).
Overall happy to finally have some sort of flash for the A7R. Wish it had a rotating flash head for the price but it's better than nothing.
I can keep it on the camera (Sony A6000) in the zoom bag (with the zoom - 18-105 F4).
It's much stronger than the camera flash (obviously) good for group shots to about 25 feet. Downside is that it doesn't swivel and doesn't zoon, so it's quite restricted.
I gave it 4 stars because of the on off mechanism. I really would have preferred a normal switch. The thing turns on when you pivot the main part up. Although it seems like a cool idea, the thing I liked most about this unit was that it was compact and flat. But the OFF position requires that the hot shoe mount be 90 degrees from the main flash body. So to keep the thing off, you ruin it's beautiful compact flatness!!!
On the plus side, the few times the shoe pivoted in my pocket (thereby turning on), it didn't seem to drain the battery. Maybe keeping it flat (and permanently on) won't leave you flash less. I'm just guessing - will have to test this theory.
Small and perfect for fill flash - I'd buy another in a minute~ highly recommended.
(Has a bounce & direct flash mode with a switchable diffuser- very handy.)
Flash is poorly constructed, easy to break. The first flash I bought was damaged beyond repair while attached to camera due to slight bump. On the positive side it is small and light and perfect size for sony A 7. Next size up makes camera top heavy and adds to weight of camera. Pity Sony can devise a lightweight flash that is quick to fire and has some extended life. I would not recommend this.
The price is high for what it is / does. If it were priced below $100 I'd be tempted to rate it 5 stars for the value proposition. One other improvement I would have liked is to have the locking mechanism of the larger f60 flash - I've never been a fan of the wheel lock. I do appreciate the multi-interface shoe of this flash (as opposed to the f20AM - which has the older minolta iISO hot shoe). I can use this flash on the RX100 II, some of the newer NEX cameras and the new a7 / a7R bodies - finally one connector to rule them all (though it would be nice if Sony would use more metal and less plastic in the shoe connector of the accessories).
