15max, Just what you would expect from IR

Other reviews seemed confusing or contradicting so I'll lay out the facts and what I observed with this gun (the 3/8 drive 15 max). First off yes, unfortunately the gun is made in China unlike most IR products, but the quality, construction and feel of the gun is comparable to my other USA made IR tools. The gun I received does not leak whatsoever, so if yours does just send it back to amazon and get a new one; it's defective.. For my test I use a 3/8" x 50' rubber airline with no leaks, and 1/4" NPT V-type air fittings. 3hp 30 gal compressor running 100 psi in the line. Oiled the gun with standard air tool oil as soon as I took it out of the box. I used a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts on my truck to see what the limit of breakaway torque this gun will make. The lug nuts are 9/16" -18 clean, rust free, dry threads and 3/4" hex nuts. Using a deep impact 3/8" drive 3/4" socket and no extension I found that the limit of this gun is between 154 and 158 ft lbs of breakaway torque on that specific size of lug nut. I tried multiple times and multiple nuts, and it consistently would not loosen bolts torqued to 160 lb ft and would always loosen torqued to 150 lb ft. 155 lb ft is 50/50. When tightening the lugs until the gun completely stopped turning the nuts came out to between 120-130 ft lbs tight. You might think that's not even close to the advertised torque, but the manufacturer torque ratings are always some made up number in a specific test to make the gun perform as best as possible, with no real standard. Either way, that's more than enough torque for most real world applications like brake, suspension and under the hood work. This should not be your main gun by any means, but it is a specialty tool for tight spaces and does exceptionally well at that. It's also very cheap for an IR tool... Only ~$30 more than the harbor freight earthquake? Maybe I'm biased to the brand, but it seems like a no brainier to me. Earthquake might last 10 years, IR will outlive you.

a real bolt breaker

so when I first got this I was pretty leery because it is so light and quite and at first I was not convinced straight out of the box but after a month it just seems to be getting stronger as it breaks in. I used it to take off 3/4 ton truck lug nuts just for giggles and it did it. On the highest setting it reefs it down hard and keeps twisting to the point that if you don't pay attention it will twist the head of a 3/8 bolt. I am pleased and will now buy the 1/2 as well. It's also small enough to get into tight places. Best impact I've used by a wide margin.

The last impact I'll ever have to buy!

When I took this tool out of the box I was immediately impressed with it's design and attention to detail. It's half the size and weight of my other two impact wrenches but I was more impressed with it's power to take off some very tight fasteners.

The wrench has full power counter clockwise for removing nuts and bolts and an adjustment for tightening. Powerful, lightweight, high quality, and easy to use, perfect for home or shop. It's not cheep but then again no quality tool is.

This impact wrench will replace my other two half inch impact wrenches.

450 ft-lb? Not even close...

I bought this for my shop for wheel installation and removal from my car. Even at the highest torque setting with 95psi continuous from my compressor it doesn't generate enough torque to tighten my lug-nuts even close to spec @ 105 ft-lb. I can literally hold the 17mm socket in my hand while it's spinning and it will just ineffectively go into impact mode without even twisting my grip. I haven't measured it, but I would be surprised if it's delivering even 45 ft-lb let alone 450.

Great impact gun, great for automotive shop use!

Great impact gun! Plenty of power and extremely reliable for everyday use. I use mine daily at the dealership everything from rotates to removing subframe and crank pulley bolts. There have been several bolts I have had to use my snap on impact however. This gun is a stubby and does have its limitations. However in the automotive world this thing will remove 95% of nuts and bolts on cars. I have had it for several months now, the grip is comfortable, it's extremely light compared to a full size 1/2in. It is moderately loud, not quiet by any means but it does make a good bit of noise I would rate the sound level a 7 out of 10 for impacts. Overall a great purchase I'm happy with. I also have owned the 3\8 for over a year now and am just as happy, it works great and has had daily use also.

Pretty strong for a compact gun. I had a Mac tools gun that I had to get rid of within a month because it wouldn’t remove most lug nuts. This thing zips off all lugnuts and brake caliper bolts with no problem. Even zipped off a staked axle nut. You will never be disappointed with IR. Amazon has the best pricing around

Tons of power compact package!! Keep in mind the dial for power is reversed when in reverse. So in reverse turn the dial to the left for more power and in forward to the right for more power. For those that said it was low on power probably did the same as me turned the dial to the right and it was w bit anemic. Then messing around found that the dial reverses made all the difference

Disappointing, given that it's Ingersoll Rand

I bought this to replace a 50-year-old but still very sound cast-iron NPK 3/8 pistol-grip tool that was stolen. This one is significantly heavier and bulkier, so much so that I think it's just a half-inch drive model with a 3/8 drive nose. The NPK was all metal, whereas this one has a LOT of plastic parts. I'm now 75 years old, and no longer working professionally, so I guess it'll last me out, but will it still be good 50 years from now? I doubt it. I can tell you that every time I pick it up I will curse the thief who took my NPK. As Stephen Jay Gould explained to us, evolution is NOT always progress.

Best Shop Impacts

I love Ingersoll's impacts. I have a range of sizes from 1" to 1/4" and use all of them daily. The 1/2" I've had the longest for 5 years, and have yet to see or feel any performance issues. As with the 1/2", with the 3/8", I have yet to hear the impact working because they are so quiet!

Of course I'm exaggerating, you can hear them working, it's just at 84 DB, these are waaaay more quiet than all of the other brand impacts. I have been able to hear and keep conversations while in use, and they have the same breaking torque as other comparable impacts! With a quality impact that performs the same and is quieter, you won't catch me with any other brand. You also won't catch me saying "huh?" A lot either as my hearing won't be as bad as with the daily use with other loud brands. 5/5 Ingersoll fanboy for life.

Strong and super quiet

IR always makes the best impacts we have IR impacts in the shop that are 10 years old and are still going strong, i made this review to show you the quality of this impacts this is the 3/8 15QMAX it took out the lug nuts of this honda like if it was nothing WARNING (i would NOT recommend the 3/8 to do heavy work or to take out tires because its not meant for that and it would not work for some applications every mechanic knows that, i strongly recommend to use the 1/2 impacts or the right tool for heavier work or to take tires off the video is to show you the quality and the power of IR). Did i mention that this impact is super quiet i was impressed of how quiet it is, im definitely going to get the 1/2 they are worth every penny.

Super light and compact but not ideal for your only 1/2” gun

This is a nice tool I’m happy with the purchase. It’s super light and still has pretty good power. It’s louder than I expected for its size. It will take lug bolts out that are tightened to 133ft lbs with no issue. About the only thing I don’t like about it is I don’t feel the trigger is very sensitive, it seems to be either on or off. I’ve never been much of a fan of the Ingersol Rand triggers (both my other guns are snap-on). I don’t think I would recommend this as your only 1/2” impact but it perfectly compliments my other big heavy tank that has the big power but also weighs over 8 lbs.

15Qmax... I was hoping for more power. Its definitely not the 475 advertised.

I got the 15Qmax for work because I primarily use a m12 Stubby for 3/8s but want an air replacement to take my Stubby home to work on my own small projects. I know it's not meant to take lugs off but I tried to take one off right after getting it and it didn't even budge the lug. My m12 stubby takes lugs off no problem. I said whatever and tried taking off a caliper bolt and it didn't take that off either. Brakes are something that this thing was supposed to be used primarily for so it's a little disappointing. With like 475 lbs breakaway it should be able to do these 2 things no problem. One thing it is good at is being quiet. Almost sounds electric. But I still have to find something that it can be used for before I could ever say I like it. I have the 2235 Qmax and absolutely love it. I wanted to get the 1/2 stubby (36Qmax I believe) but am worried it wont really be good at anything either. It's supposed to have around 600 lbs breakaway but with the severe lack of power in the 3/8 after advertising over 400 lbs breakaway Im hesitant. I don't know if my unit is defective because there are some mixed reviews. Some saying its great and others saying it lacks power.

Nice...when it works

When this tool works it’s great. Super light weight and seems strong. With that being said it’s 50/50 whether it will actually function when the trigger is pulled. I’m running this off a 10hp 80gal compressor with pressure regulated down to 95psi (which is what it’s speced at). Tried contacting IR and after being passed around 4 times via email I was told to just blindly send it in at my own cost with no RMA or other authorization to help track the item. Stay away from this impact. The cheap AirCat impact I bought 4 years ago is still working strong and is what I would recommend to people at this point.

Spend your money on something else

Beware of the reviews on this item. Read the review and ask yourself if it sounds like a user wrote it or a person paid to review it wrote the review...
My experience has been very lack luster. Bought the 3/8 version of this for a project where I knew space was going to be tight. It was absolutely gutless. My impact driver for screws did a better job than this tool. Thinking it was a defective item, I sent it back and received another new impact wrench. Same problem. IR tools used to be the best and now they sold out and are producing garbage. Save yourself the heart ache and go with a different impact wrench. The tool is light and small, so if it just had the hammer to break loose nuts, it would be a good product. The tool is ergonomic as well so that just adds to the frustration of it not working because it has the potential to be good. Value for money is very poor. You can buy a cheap tool from harbor freight or home depot and get the job done 10 times over. It's junk.

Lightening fast shipping!

Reviewed many other makes and models before making this purchase. Some having a much higher torque claims I have been unable to find proof of and I confirmed some are not as bulky. I chose I R because I have owned many of their air tools in the past and have been completely satisfied. Unlike many other brands, this tool has a grease fitting and I R offers the greasing kit as an option. Just like any other air tool the fatter the hose the better it will perform. ALWAYS ALWAYS oil your tool and use a good compressed air filter dryer like an Interstate. Contamination in your air supply can destroy any air tool in a mater of months. I ordered this tool late in the evening and it arrived the next afternoon. Don't know how they are able to do that.

Its good for anything not seized up.

I like it, it's pretty powerful for being a stubby impact, obviously it's not as powerful as my full size cornwell 1/2" impact, even after years of use, and I didn't expect it to be. It's good for doing brake jobs and removing steering linkage nuts/bolts and other random nuts and bolts in tight places on heavy duty trucks. The only thing I have noticed is that the power level 1-3 doesn't seem to do anything from what I can tell, it seems to be on full blast all the time. Also it's like twice as loud as my cornwell impact that's like twice as strong. Maybe I'll get another one and compare the two. I'd recommend it though. The stubby socket set is good, but it skips a few sizes which is a slight annoyance. Husky does the same thing with there wrench sets and skips 18mm as well and I don't understand why. It's not like they sell these sockets individually for me to buy an 18mm, but oh well hah

Everything you need and more!

Let me start off by saying I put my other ingersoll 1/2 away. i love this gun. It is powerful enough to do everything from lug nuts to crank bolts to suspension work etc. I am a professional technician that works for a Hyundai dealership. I haven’t had any problems with it. It’s very compact, extremely LIGHT! And even though It’s not a quiet gun, I gave it 5 stars, I am pretty sure you can put a piece of foam in it to make it quieter. The forward and reverse button have a very satisfying effect when you press them ( i know this sounds weird , but those who have this gun can relate to what I’m saying) 5 starts!

Great gun but loud

This impact is a work horse, I use it all day long everyday in my shop. At first the power was inconsistent, sometimes strong other times felt weak but I kept using it and it seemed to level out. It handles 95% of what I throw at it and only occasionally do I have to get the big one out. My only complaint is that it's loud, like really loud, and I can't use it without muffs, ever. Other than that I love it.

Save the Wrists

This gun has saved my wrists! I bought this because I stated getting pain in my wrists (and loosing my hearing) from my 50lbs, 9k lbs torque, 900 decibels Snap-On gun. I've always liked IR, and my last one lasted 10 years. So I got this with hight hopes. And I have to say I love this gun. I use it all day on everything! I've even started using my signal digit 1/2 impacts, and my 3/8 is gathering dust! The guys at work can't believe how well it does because of its size.

Love it so far. At first I thought it was a little loud but after everyone working on the shop it pretty much have the same decibels as every other impact gun. It's extremely light compare to the 231c I'm used to using and still does the same job. It does have less torque but for what we do it's just enough. Will update if anything changes.

380 ft lbs of torque? More like in lbs

Short version: the gun has no balls

Long version: Purchased this gun for the stubby feature and to use with my swivel socket set and was excited until I actually put the gun to the test. Boy was i extremely disappointed. The gun couldn't break loose any of the bolts on a brake job. And it occasionally would just die out as if it were an electrical impact. I'm not expecting it to be useful in any department witch such low performance. I was expecting a lot more from ingersoll. Could be that I got a defective product but I'd that's the case then their quality has surely dropped significantly.

Powerful little tool.

It is awesome. Who would think that such a little thing could be so powerful. Even with the leak at the connection to the hose ( not the tool fault) i took the stubborn nuts like a joke. One note - the sockets are a bit hard to put on when new. I think it will get easier with time.

Don’t waste your money on this impact.

Absolute junk. Needed another 3/8 while my Milwaukee is out being rebuilt, coworker has the standard 3/8 (not the compact version) and it’s a beast. Found this one, which was rated at higher tq, and a bit cheaper than the standard version. Got it, greased it, oiled it, plugged it in and even with the first pull of the trigger was disappointed just in how it felt. Compared side by side with my coworkers impact this thing is absolutely gutless. Couldn’t even touch lug nuts or caliper bolts that his took out with no issue. Might be okay for small engine repair, but if you wrench on cars for a living don’t waste your money on this.
