Prior design was better
Every few years I need to clean the cartridge because of an accumulation of minerals. After the last cleaning, the water temperature was initially very hot, then by the end of the shower had diminished to lukewarm. So, I bought this replacement. It does maintain a fairly constant temperature, buy the flow rate is somewhat lower than the original. The original used metal screens for the water to enter the cartridge through while this replacement uses what looks to be a composite material with holes in them. It looks like the screens were capable of passing more water through. They probably changed the design to counteract the mineral accumulation issue.
The original was about 10 years old. I cleaned it by soaking in white vinegar for about a half hour.
As a side comment, after initially installing the fixture we found the flow rate to be somewhat less than desired so removed the flow restriction washer.

Hard water eventually ruined the original cartridge purchased sometime during 2003 or 2004 for a major remodeling project. Water flow had dropped and the cartridge could not hold a consistent temperature. The temperature would drop during your shower as if the hot water was running out.
Replacing the cartridge is a super easy repair, particularly if you've done any sort of valve stem replacement in the past. I used a little plumbing grease because I had it on hand, but I can see how people have had success without it.
The one problem I had was that the screw to hold the original "adapter for handle" part in place was not long enough. The cartridge was still usable, but the knob could be pulled off. After a week of trying to figure out how to either file a piece down, or otherwise drill out the middle of the adapter so that it would seat more deeply, I finally decided to order a replacement "adapter for handle" part. The part number is 97108000. It looks like it is available on Amazon, but the provider doesn't include a photo to verify that it's the right part. I bought it from another source for about the same amount of money.
My guess is that there was a relatively minor design change at some point that made my original adapter incompatible. If you're having a plumber replace an older cartridge, it's a no-brainer to buy a new adapter up-front. For $20 you might avoid a return trip charge. You can always return it if you don't need it.

Fit my Delta 17T series shower
This fit my Delta 17T series housing perfectly. Only thing I could find from Delta was the entire shower cartridge assembly for over $175, so I took a chance on this for under $50. Like one other reviewer said, the picture looked exactly like mine, except for some plastic instead of brass. Don’t be afraid of the brand name difference if all you need is the cartridge. Mine was clogged with mineral deposits and water pressure is now back to normal.
After removing the cartridge, I turned on the water and a few pieces of debris came out, which may have also been part of the problem.
The shower valve I have has a marking that says “17T / 18T Series” on the main cover, and the brand is Delta.

Solved My Problem of Poor Hot Water Control and Noisy Pipes
I normally don't write reviews, but I am so pleased with the results of the new unit I wanted to share what issues it solved for me.
I have had a Hansgrohe shower/bath for over ten years. I have very hard water in my area and used the unit for the first ~2 years before installing a properly functioning water softener. This may have contributed to the early demise of the original thermostatic unit. If you ever open up unit and find hard water deposits or residue from the pipes, this will definitely affect the temperature control and overall flow of the device. Once I had a good water softener in place, I never had to deal with mineral deposits in the thermostatic unit again.
With the old unit, the pipes were always very noisy on hot and I would continually struggle to get decent flow and a high enough temperature. I cleaned and readjusted the old unit many times with marginal results.
After replacing the thermostatic unit with the new one, the noise in the pipes went away and I have full temperature and flow back at all settings. I can go from full flow ice cold to very hot with precise control and everything is quiet.
If you have temperature control problems or noisy shower/bath and know the thermal unit isn't dirty or plugged up, I would recommend replacing this unit. Its the best money I have spend on a plumbing repair a very long time......
I would also caution anyone with un-treated very hard water to get a softener in place or it could affect the operation of this unit. The hard water problem will be even worse if you have a tankless water heater as all the mineral deposits have no where to go but down your pipes to your fixtures.

Fixed my problematic shower valve
I bought a house with a Hansgrohe shower valve that never worked quite right. The temperature could not be set as cool as I wanted and the handle would not stay in place, drifting to a hotter setting on its own. I had a professional try to adjust it, but it never worked correctly until I replaced the cartridge myself. It was easy to do since Hansgrohe has shutoff valves built right into the main unit. The only "special" tools I needed was a set of metric hex keys, an adjustable wrench, and a little silicone plumbers grease to lubricate the O-rings. The cartridge I received (sold by Amazon, not a third-party vendor) was an authentic made in Germany Hansgrohe part. The shower works perfectly now with a wide temp range of 60F-120F!

Easy replacement
I have a 15 year old shower panel, could not even figure out the model number, so had to do a bit of research on Hansgrohe website. It happened to be the right part. All I needed to do to install it is to take the trim off, and unscrew the old cartridge. Once installed - seems to work fine. I did not need an adapter for the trim, as others mentioned

Hansgrohe has the BEST customer service!
I wanted to replace my 10 year old shower cartridge and was advised by Hansgrohe customer service to get this. They are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. If I ever had to purchase bathroom fixtures again in the future I would definitely stick with Hansgrohe products!

Easy replacement
The hot water in my shower (Talis faucet) stopped working. The manual says to replace the cartridge. This was an easy replacement with two adjustable wrenches. Easy.

Control Worked
This temp contriller solved my problem. The part worked and was eay to put in so 5 stars. Hansgrohe is the BMW of water valves. Overly complicated, unreliable and VERY expensive.

A month to return... you have got ...
A month to return... you have got to be kidding me. Hansgrohe stuff is very difficult to fix and requires special expensive parts. I would not buy another item from them again after furnishing my entire house with their fixtures. Bought two of the same parts to make sure at least one worked and now I can't return it. 👎
